An implementable digital adaptive flight controller designed using stabilized single stage algorithms

Simple mechanical linkages have not solved the many control problems associated with high performance aircraft maneuvering throughout a wide flight envelope. One procedure for retaining uniform handling qualities over such an envelope is to implement a digital adaptive controller. Towards such an implementation an explicit adaptive controller which makes direct use of on-line parameter identification, has been developed and applied to both linearized and nonlinear equations of motion for a typical fighter aircraft. This controller is composed of an on-line weighted least squares parameter identifier, a Kalman state filter, and a model following control law designed using single stage performance indices. Simulation experiments with realistic measurement noise indicate that the proposed adaptive system has the potential for on-board implementation.

Laser-zone growth in a Ribbon-To-Ribbon, RTR, process silicon sheet growth development for the large area silicon sheet task of the low cost silicon solar array project

A ribbon-to-ribbon process was used for routine growth of samples for analysis and fabrication into solar cells. One lot of solar cells was completely evaluated: ribbon solar cell efficiencies averaged 9.23% with a highest efficiency of 11.7%. Spherical reflectors have demonstrated significant improvements in laser silicon coupling efficiencies. Material analyses were performed including silicon photovoltage and open circuit photovoltage diffusion length measurements, crystal morphology studies, modulus of rupture measurements, and annealing/gettering studies. An initial economic analysis was performed indicating that ribbon-to-ribbon add-on costs of $.10/watt might be expected in the early 1980's.

Design, fabrication and testing of a CFA for use in the solar power satellite

A crossed field amplifier was designed to meet the performance objectives of high signal to noise ratio, an efficiency of 85%, a CW microwave power output of 5-8 kW, and a frequency of 2450 MHz. The signal to noise ratio achieved was better than 69 db/MHz in a 2000 MHz band centered on the carrier. High circuit efficiency of 97% and a sharp knee on voltage current characteristic were achieved. The basic problem of maintaining good transfer of heat to the external radiator while providing for adequate connections to input and output was solved. Maximum efficiency achieved was 70.5% and gain and power level were below objectives. An investigation of causes of reduced performance indicated the poor field pattern in the cathode anode interaction area of the tube was a major cause.

An implementable digital adaptive flight controller designed using stabilized single-stage algorithms

An explicit adaptive controller, which makes direct use of on-line parameter identification, has been developed and applied to both the linearized and nonlinear equations of motion for the F-8 aircraft. This controller is composed of an on-line weighted least squares parameter identifier, a Kalman state filter, and a real model following control law designed using single-stage performance indices. The corresponding control gains are readily adjustable in accordance with parameter changes to ensure asymptotic stability if the conditions of perfect model following are satisfied, and stability in the sense of boundedness otherwise. Simulation experiments with realistic measurement noise indicate that the controller was effective in compensating for parameter variations and capable of rapid recovery from a set of erroneous initial parameter estimates which defined a set of destabilizing gains.

Computation of output feedback gains for linear stochastic systems using the Zangwill-Powell method

Because conventional optimal linear regulator theory results in a controller which requires the capability of measuring and/or estimating the entire state vector, it is of interest to consider procedures for computing controls which are restricted to be linear feedback functions of a lower dimensional output vector and which take into account the presence of measurement noise and process uncertainty. To this effect a stochastic linear model has been developed that accounts for process parameter and initial uncertainty, measurement noise, and a restricted number of measurable outputs. Optimization with respect to the corresponding output feedback gains was then performed for both finite and infinite time performance indices without gradient computation by using Zangwill's modification of a procedure originally proposed by Powell.

Design study of a 15 kW free-piston Stirling engine-linear alternator for dispersed solar electric power systems

A conceptual design of a free piston solar Stirling engine-linear alternator which can be designed and developed to meet the requirements of a near-term solar test bed engine with minimum risks was developed. The conceptual design was calculated to have an overall system efficiency of 38% and provide 15kW electric output. The free piston engine design incorporates features such as gas bearings, close clearance seals, and gas springs. This design is hermetically sealed to provide long life, reliability, and maintenance free operation. An implementation assessment study performed indicates that the free piston solar Stirling engine-linear alternator can be manufactured at a reasonable price cost (direct labor plus material) of $2,500 per engine in production quantities of 25,000 units per year. Opportunity for significant reduction of cost was also identified.

The use of total simulator training in transitioning air-carrier pilots: A field evaluation

A field study was conducted in which the performance of air carrier transitioning pilots who had landing training in a landing maneuver approved simulator was compared with the performance of pilots who had landing training in the aircraft. Forty-eight trainees transitioning to the B-727 aircraft and eighty-seven trainees transitioning to the DC-10 were included in the study. The study results in terms of both objectively measured performance indicants and observer and check-pilot ratings did not demonstrate a clear distinction between the two training groups. The results suggest that, for these highly skilled transitioning pilots, a separate training module in the aircraft may be of dubious value.

A definition of the degree of disturbance rejection

The problem of rejecting disturbances that are known a priori to reside in a particular function class is treated. Two scalar measures, the degree of disturbance rejection (DODR) and the degree of disturbability (DOD) are defined and shown to be useful in rating a candidate controller's ability to counter the expected disturbances. The measures can thus be used as criteria for controller design and actuator placement. It is shown that the DODR can guarantee that constraints on the control action will not be violated. The DOD assumes a closed-loop controller realization, and this gives a simplified formulation in terms of one state space region instead of two. With the DOD, a variety of performance indices can be considered, together with a spectrum of possible controller implementations.

Experimental measurement of passive material and structural damping for flexible space structures

Among the design objectives for large space structures are the maintenance of tight dimensional tolerance and the reduction of settling time after disturbance input. Two options are under consideration for the design of flexible structures to meet these objectives, including an active control option and a passive control option. In connection with both options, it is necessary to include material and structural damping in the design. A description is presented of the results of an experimental investigation of the damping of metallic and fibrous composite materials, taking into account also the analytical modeling and experimental verification of frictional damping schemes. To demonstrate how material and frictional damping can be combined, a simple structural optimization is performed, indicating the potential for significant savings in mass by the addition of frictional dampers.

Remote sensing of stratospheric and mesospheric winds by gas correlation electrooptic phase-modulation spectroscopy

A method is developed for directly measuring atmospheric winds in the 20-120 km altitude interval from a spacecraft. The wind sensor measures the Doppler shift between the spectral absorption lines of a gas in a cell within the instrument and the thermal emission lines of the same gas in the atmosphere. The wind measurements are performed using a spacecraft-borne gas correlation spectrometer viewing the limb of the atmosphere. The wind-induced Doppler shift between the two spectra, and thus the magnitude of the wind itself, is obtained by phase modulating the incoming thermal radiation (equivalent to frequency modulation) by means of an electrooptically active crystal to determine the frequency shift required to reestablish exact correlation between the lines in the cell and the lines from the atmosphere. Results of numerical simulations of the wind-sensor performance indicate that the noise-equivalent-wind is between 1-5 m/s over most of the stratosphere and mesosphere.

Evaluation of Gas-Cooled Pressurized Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells for Electric Utility Power Generation

Gas cooling is a more reliable, less expensive and a more simple alternative to conventional liquid cooling for heat removal from the phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC). The feasibility of gas-cooling was already demonstrated in atmospheric pressure stacks. Theoretical and experimental investigations of gas-cooling for pressurized PAFC are presented. Two approaches to gas cooling, Distributed Gas-Cooling (DIGAS) and Separated Gas-Cooling (SGC) were considered, and a theoretical comparison on the basis of cell performance indicated SGC to be superior to DIGAS. The feasibility of SGC was experimentally demonstrated by operating a 45-cell stack for 700 hours at pressure, and determining thermal response and the effect of other related parameters.

The effects of lithium counterdoping on radiation damage and annealing in n(+)p silicon solar cells

Boron-doped silicon n(+)p solar cells were counterdoped with lithium by ion implantation and the resultant n(+)p cells irradiated by 1 MeV electrons. Performance parameters were determined as a function of fluence and a deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) study was conducted. The lithium counterdoped cells exhibited significantly increased radiation resistance when compared to boron doped control cells. Isochronal annealing studies of cell performance indicate that significant annealing occurs at 100 C. Isochronal annealing of the deep level defects showed a correlation between a single defect at E sub v + 0.43 eV and the annealing behavior of short circuit current in the counterdoped cells. The annealing behavior was controlled by dissociation and recombination of this defect. The DLTS studies showed that counterdoping with lithium eliminated three deep level defects and resulted in three new defects. The increased radiation resistance of the counterdoped cells is due to the interaction of lithium with oxygen, single vacancies and divacancies. The lithium-oxygen interaction is the most effective in contributing to the increased radiation resistance.

Research on output feedback control of systems with ill-conditioned dynamics

The accuracy of a two time scale approach to the output feedback regulator design problem is examined. An approximate quadratic performance index which reflects a two time scale decomposition of the system dynamics is developed. A sequential numerical algorithm is defined which obtains output feedback gains minimizing a broad class of performance indices, including the standard LQ case. A procedure for optimally zeroing selected gain elements in an output feedback gain matrix is developed and demonstrated. A summary of conference and journal publications from this research is also provided.
