A Review of Sensing Technologies for New, Low Global Warming Potential (GWP), Flammable Refrigerants

Commercial refrigeration systems currently utilize refrigerants with global warming potential (GWP) values ranging from 1250 to 4000. The advent of low GWP alternatives (GWP <150) is expected to significantly curtail direct emissions from this segment and greatly influence the ongoing electrification and decarbonization efforts. Most of the low GWP alternatives exhibit flammability risk and hence require robust sensing solutions for a reliable and safe operation of the equipment. This review article aims to provide an overview of different sensing mechanisms suitable for potential applications in systems employing flammable refrigerants, particularly those designated as A2L class. A summary of different A2L refrigerants and their properties is provided followed by a broad review of different classes of sensors, their working principle, transduction method, features, advantages, and limitations. Additionally, key performance characteristics of accuracy, selectivity, sensitivity, dynamic characteristic, and durability among other properties are discussed. Finally, areas of improvement and corresponding approaches are suggested for potential sensors in the successful adoption of A2L class refrigerants.

A Vector Sensor-Based Acoustic Characterization System for Marine Renewable Energy

NoiseSpotter is a passive acoustic monitoring system that characterizes, classifies, and geo-locates anthropogenic and natural sounds in near real time. It was developed with the primary goal of supporting the evaluation of potential acoustic effects of offshore renewable energy projects. The system consists of a compact array of three acoustic vector sensors, which measures acoustic pressure and the three-dimensional particle velocity vector associated with the propagation of an acoustic wave, thereby inherently providing bearing information to an underwater source of sound. By utilizing an array of three vector sensors, the application of beamforming techniques can provide sound source localization, allowing for characterization of the acoustic signature of specific underwater acoustic sources. Here, performance characteristics of the system are presented, using data from controlled acoustic transmissions in a quiet environment and ambient noise measurements in an energetic tidal channel in the presence of non-acoustic flow noise. Data quality is demonstrated by the ability to reduce non-acoustic flow noise contamination, while system utility is shown by the ability to characterize and localize sources of sound in the underwater environment.

Numerical Analysis of Radiation Effects on Fiber Optic Sensors

Optical fiber sensors (OFS) are a potential candidate for monitoring physical parameters in nuclear environments. However, under an irradiation field the optical response of the OFS is modified via three primary mechanisms: (i) radiation-induced attenuation (RIA), (ii) radiation-induced emission (RIE), and (iii) radiation-induced compaction (RIC). For resonance-based sensors, RIC plays a significant role in modifying their performance characteristics. In this paper, we numerically investigate independently the effects of RIC and RIA on three types of OFS widely considered for radiation environments: fiber Bragg grating (FBG), long-period grating (LPG), and Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensors. In our RIC modeling, experimentally calculated refractive index (RI) changes due to low-dose radiation are extrapolated using a power law to calculate density changes at high doses. The changes in RI and length are subsequently calculated using the Lorentz–Lorenz relation and an established empirical equation, respectively. The effects of both the change in the RI and length contraction on OFS are modeled for both low and high doses using FIMMWAVE, a commercially available vectorial mode solver. An in-depth understanding of how radiation affects OFS may reveal various potential OFS applications in several types of radiation environments, such as nuclear reactors or in space.

MONTE CARLO CROSS SECTION LOOKUP KERNEL FOR THE CEREBRAS WSE-2 IN CSL

This is a small kernel that was used to collect data for an upcoming paper. We would like to have the code be open source so that the reviewers (and then readers) of the paper can see the whole code, and can reproduce/verify our results. This is not a fully featured application, it cannot produce any useful simulation results, it just executes a small abstracted kernel using synthetic data. The purpose of the kernel is to understand the basic performance characteristics of an HPC kernel on novel AI accelerator architectures. The main kernel is written in the CSL coding language for use with the Cerebras WSE-2 AI accelerator. The kernel represented is the Monte Carlo cross section lookup kernel, which is a small kernel used by the Monte Carlo neutral particle transport algorithm. There is also a baseline kernel written in CUDA that we will include in the repository to form a basis for comparing the WSE-2 to GPU.

The Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder Array: System Functions and Basic Performance Analysis

The Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder is a radio interferometer array designed to test techniques for 21 cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization Universe, with the ultimate aim of mapping the large scale structure of the Universe and measuring cosmological parameters such as the dark energy equation of state. Each of its three parallel cylinder reflectors are oriented in the north-south direction, and the array has a large field of view. As the Earth rotates, the northern sky is observed by drift scanning. The array is located in Hongliuxia, a radio quiet site in Xinjiang, and saw its first light in September 2016. In this first paper on the data analysis of the Tianlai cylinder array, we describe the system functions of the array, the commissioning observations during 2016- 2018, and present its basic performance characteristics. We show examples of the interferometric visibility data, then using the observational data, we derive the actual beam profile in the east-west direction, the bandpass response, and calibrate the complex gains for the array elements either with a strong astronomical point source, or with an artificial calibrator source. Based on the preliminary analysis of the data, we derive the system temperature and sensitivity of the array.

Final Report for Grant

This is the final report for this project. The major objectives were to develop full models and standard cells of CMOS silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) for neutron detection applications. Specifically, the research seeks to replace photomultiplier tubes, used in neutron detection applications, with SiPMs containing integrated readout electronics fabricated in standard CMOS processes. The detectors improve on the detection efficiency, readout speed, resolution (sensitivity), and spatial resolution of current systems. In particular, this work involved collaboration with the instrument and detector group at ORNL who build detectors based on discrete commercially available PMTs and SiPMs. The SiPM detectors developed in this work are based on Perimeter Gated Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (PGSPAD). These devices have tunable breakdown voltage which affects other performance characteristics of the detectors. The ability of the detectors to have integrated readout and tune the noise floor and dynamic range in addition to offering a method for non-uniformity compensation in a compact form significantly impacts the imaging research field and includes the nuclear sciences field, circuits and systems field in addition to varied fields such as geography and biology/medicine.

AMR Magnetic Sensors in Flux Expulsion Studies

Magnetic flux expulsion properties of the superconducting material such as bulk niobium, widely used for the radio-frequency cavity fabrication, substantially affect the performance characteristics of the cavities. The quality factor of the SRF resonators can be significantly compromised due to the presence of the trapped flux vortices causing additional RF energy losses in the material. Large number of experiments have been carried out by different research groups to establish the correlation of the flux trapping in niobium cavities with the presence of impurities in niobium as well as various surface treatment methods. Majority of these experiments utilize commercially available cryogenic fluxgate magnetic sensors to measure the field before and after the niobium transition to the superconducting state to quantify the amount of flux trapped. One disadvantage of the typically used fluxgates is the size of the sensing volume. As an example, the Barting-ton F and G type cryogenic fluxgates have a sensing core length of about 30mm, which is comparable to the curvature radius of the cavity walls and hence the magnetic field lines curvature radius after the expulsion. Thus, the measured field value needs to be corrected to account for the sensor effective averaging over the sensing volume. In case of the sharper geometries, for instance if the flux expulsion to be measured on the edge of the rectangular niobium flat sheet with a thickness of ~5mm, the use of the fluxgate would be impractical.

Organic photovoltaic cells and non-fullerene acceptors thereof

Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) and their compositions are described herein. In one or more embodiments, the acceptor with an active layer of an OPV includes is a non-fullerene acceptor. Such non-fullerene acceptors may provide improved OPV performance characteristics such as improved power conversion efficiency, open circuit voltage, fill factor, short circuit current, and/or external quantum efficiency. One example of a non-fullerene acceptor is (4,4,10,10-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-5,11-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-4,10-dihydro-dithienyl[1,2-b:4,5b′] benzodi-thiophene-2,8-diyl) bis(2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-5,6-dichloro-1-ylidene) malononitrile.

A preconceptual design of an inverted Stable-Salt Reactor

This paper presents a preconceptual design of an inverted stable-salt reactor (SSR), with the unique feature that the static fuel salt is accommodated in one single bulk fuel container, while the coolant salt is circulating through the core via flow tubes penetrating the fuel container. The inverted SSR is expected to substantially decrease the capital cost compared to the state-of-the-art SSR such as the SSR-W designed by Moltex Energy, because one single gas vent at the top of the fuel container is required in the inverted SSR to prevent the leakage of the radioactive fission product gases instead of one gas vent in each of the hundreds of thousands of fuel tubes in SSR-W. In addition, the operation of the inverted SSR is largely simplified. However, numerous challenges associated with the design of the inverted SSR still remain to be overcome. Preliminary neutronics and thermal-hydraulics performance characteristics of the inverted SSR are assessed in this study. A viable core configuration of the inverted SSR is identified, and the superior characteristics of the inverted SSR, including a better neutron economy and a lower maximum fuel temperature, are demonstrated in this paper.
