Conference Support for 2024 MagNetUS Meeting

The 4th annual MagNetUS meeting was held from April 14-18, 2024 in Los Angeles, California at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center. The goal of the meeting was to continue the successful template of a mix of invited talks, contributed talks, posters, and discussion sessions established by the first three MagNetUS meetings, in order to 1) communicate physics advances relevant for basic magnetized plasma research which can be performed at small and mid-size experimental facilities; 2) allow collaborator facilities to connect and interact with existing users and potential new users; and 3) grow the community of potential users of collaborator facilities, as well as scientists who focus on theory/modeling and spacecraft observations. The meeting was attended by 77 participants (71 in person) from 23 unique institutions and included 14 invited talks, 19 contributed talks, 22 posters, and six discussion sessions. Topics covered by the meeting included fusion research, space and astrophysical systems (including laboratory analogs), magnetic reconnection, plasma thrusters, turbulence, waves, dusty plasmas, laser plasmas, plasma vortices, plasma sources, and software ecosystems. Discussion sessions included discussions on science communication, with NSF and DOE program managers, on the MagNetUS application process for new users, on experimental facility capabilities, and as a tie-in to the Solar Wind Machine meeting.

Large-Scale CO2 Storage and Reservoir Management Strategies: Case Studies

This poster describes large-scale CO2 storage and reservoir management case studies for presentation at the AGU2024 conference. The analysis in this study provides a wealth of details on the designs and strategies that can lead to an optimal solution for pressure and CO2 plume management under critical constraints. These findings not only promise a reduction in the CO2 storage footprint but also hold the potential to create a more environmentally friendly ecosystem. Furthermore, this research offers valuable insights into the decision-making process when considering multi-project deployment in a shared basin for large-scale and gigatons of CO2 storage, paving the way for a more sustainable future. Poster presented (virtual) at the 2024 AGU Conference, December 9-13, 2024, Washington, D.C.

Modeling the Cost of CO2 Saline Storage on a Regional and National Level

This poster presents the results of using the FECM/NETL CO2 Saline Storage Cost Model (CO2_S_COM) to evaluate the cost of saline storage in potential storage formations in the lower 48 U.S. states. Costs were calculated for 314 saline storage formations in the CO2_S_COM geologic property database. These results were used to generate national and regional cost-supply curves. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed that quantified how modifying several input variables in CO2_S_COM affected the costs. Poster presented (virtual) at the 2024 AGU Conference, December 9-13, 2024, Washington, D.C.

Subsurface Halogenation of Fracturing Fluid Additives

This poster was presented by Ollie Donald (ORISE) at the Goldschmidt conference, Aug 18-23, 2024. The poster describes our work related to extracting and characterizing organic compounds in produced water from the Marcellus shale region. A new subsurface transformation product, a chlorinated linear alkyl ethoxylate, was identified, indicating that surfactants commonly used in hydraulic fracturing can react to form potentially hazardous pollutants. This work is intended to enable improved decision-making regarding produced water treatment and reuse.

Isolated porosity: A Signature of Submarine Volcanism?

In this conference poster, we show that pumice clasts from submarine volcanoes contain more isolated pores than those from volcanoes that erupt on land. Isolated pores are void spaces that are disconnected from the clast's exterior and are unexpected because most pores coalesce in high total porosity pumice. We specifically, explore the presence of isolated pores in clasts from a 2019 eruption of Volcano F, Tonga and suggest that whole-clast cooling in water may help prevent bubble coalesce and preserve isolated pores. Poster presented at the 2025 International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of Earth's Interior Meeting (IAVCEI).
