Survey of adaptive image coding techniques

The general problem of image data compression is discussed briefly with attention given to the use of Karhunen-Loeve transforms, suboptimal systems, and block quantization. A survey is then conducted encompassing the four categories of adaptive systems: (1) adaptive transform coding (adaptive sampling, adaptive quantization, etc.), (2) adaptive predictive coding (adaptive delta modulation, adaptive DPCM encoding, etc.), (3) adaptive cluster coding (blob algorithms and the multispectral cluster coding technique), and (4) adaptive entropy coding.

An approach to eliminate roundoff errors in digital filters

'Second-order quantizers' are introduced which can be used for implementing recursive digital filters with practically no roundoff errors or limit-cycle oscillations. Based on the idea of changing the transfer function used to compute roundoff errors, these quantizers save the low-order bits to correct the product at future iterations. For several pole locations, this can be done with a minimal amount of extra hardware.

Issues in the digital implementation of control compensators

Techniques developed for the finite-precision implementation of digital filters were used, adapted, and extended for digital feedback compensators, with particular emphasis on steady state, linear-quadratic-Gaussian compensators. Topics covered include: (1) the linear-quadratic-Gaussian problem; (2) compensator structures; (3) architectural issues: serialism, parallelism, and pipelining; (4) finite wordlength effects: quantization noise, quantizing the coefficients, and limit cycles; and (5) the optimization of structures.

Block adaptive rate controlled image data compression

A block adaptive rate controlled (BARC) image data compression algorithm is described. It is noted that in the algorithm's principal rate controlled mode, image lines can be coded at selected rates by combining practical universal noiseless coding techniques with block adaptive adjustments in linear quantization. Compression of any source data at chosen rates of 3.0 bits/sample and above can be expected to yield visual image quality with imperceptible degradation. Exact reconstruction will be obtained if the one-dimensional difference entropy is below the selected compression rate. It is noted that the compressor can also be operated as a floating rate noiseless coder by simply not altering the input data quantization. Here, the universal noiseless coder ensures that the code rate is always close to the entropy. Application of BARC image data compression to the Galileo orbiter mission of Jupiter is considered.

Artifacts in digital images

Three kinds of artifacts unique to digital images are illustrated, namely aliasing caused by undersampling, interference phenomena caused by improper display of images, and harmonic overtones caused by quantization of amplitudes. Special attention is given to undersampling when the sample size and interval are the same. It is noted that this situation is important because it is typical of solid-state cameras. Quantization of image data of necessity introduces energy at harmonic overtones of the image spectrum. This energy is aliased if the frequency of the overtones is greater than 0.5 cycle/pixel. It cannot be selectively removed from the image through filtering, and the best way to suppress it is to maximize the amplification of the sensor before digital encoding.

Study of communications data compression methods

A simple monochrome conditional replenishment system was extended to higher compression and to higher motion levels, by incorporating spatially adaptive quantizers and field repeating. Conditional replenishment combines intraframe and interframe compression, and both areas are investigated. The gain of conditional replenishment depends on the fraction of the image changing, since only changed parts of the image need to be transmitted. If the transmission rate is set so that only one fourth of the image can be transmitted in each field, greater change fractions will overload the system. A computer simulation was prepared which incorporated (1) field repeat of changes, (2) a variable change threshold, (3) frame repeat for high change, and (4) two mode, variable rate Hadamard intraframe quantizers. The field repeat gives 2:1 compression in moving areas without noticeable degradation. Variable change threshold allows some flexibility in dealing with varying change rates, but the threshold variation must be limited for acceptable performance.

Information density and efficiency of two-dimensional /2-D/ sampled imagery

Information density and efficiency (i.e., the ratio of information density to data density) are used as criteria for assessing the quality of 2-D sampled and quantized imagery as a function of the statistical properties of random radiance fields, the spatial response (PSF or MTF) and sensitivity of imaging systems, and the sampling and quantization intervals. Computational results are intuitively satisfying: they are consistent with experimental and theoretical results obtained by earlier investigators concerned with the performance of TV cameras, and they provide useful guidelines for optimizing the design of line-scan and sensor-array imaging systems, especially if these systems use a digital communication link for transmitting data.

High-speed Digital Baseband Mixer

The feasibility of designing a digital, complex, baseband mixer with a 50 MHz sampling rate is explored. The baseband filter must provide passbands with linear phase response to minimize intersymbol interference. The effects of signal quantization, filter coefficient quantization, dynamic range, filter response characteristics, and the performance of the mixer when used for cross correlation and autocorrelation pulse detection techniques are discussed. This filter was designed for use in the high speed data acquisition system (HSDAS), an advanced experimental system in the Deep Space Network.

Permutation codes for the Laplacian source

Permutation codes for the Laplacian source are developed. The performance of these codes is evaluated and compared with other quantizers and the rate-distortion function. It is shown that there is a bit-rate region in which the permutation codes outperform certain single-sample quantizers.

Effect of Landsat Thematic Mapper sensor parameters on land cover classification

Selected sensor parameter differences between TM and MSS were assessed through classification performance of a suburban/regional test site. Overall classification accuracy of a seven-band Landsat TM scene in comparison to MSS yielded an improvement in accuracy from 74.8 percent to 83.2 percent. To study the possible causes for the difference in classification performance, key sensor parameter differences between MSS and TM, including: (1) spatial resolution (30 m for TM versus 80 m for MSS), (2) quantization level (256 levels for TM versus 64 for MSS), and (3) spectral regions (seven bands in four major spectral regions for TM versus four bands in two regions for MSS), were evaluated. Landsat TM data were processed to stimulate all possible combinations of these MSS and TM parameters, yielding a three-factor design with two levels per factor. The results indicated that the added spectral regions (TM 1, TM 5, and TM 7) and to a lesser degree the increase in quantization level to eight bits produced the improved TM classification accuracy. However, in this study, the higher 30 m spatial resolution of TM contributed to a reduced classification accuracy from increased within-field variability or class heterogeneity.

Structure variation of the index of refraction of GaAs-AlAs superlattices and multiple quantum wells

A detailed calculation of the index refraction of various GaAs-AlAs superlattices is presented for the first time. The calculation is performed by using a hybrid approach which combines the k-p method with the pseudopotential technique. Appropriate quantization conditions account for the influence of the superstructures on the electronic properties of the systems. The results of the model are in very good agreement with the experimental data. In comparison with the index of refraction of the corresponding AlGaAs alloy, characterized by the same average mole fraction of Al, the results indicate that the superlattice index of refraction values attain maxima at the various quantized transition energies. For certain structures the difference can be as large as 2 percent. These results suggest that the waveguiding and dispersion relation properties of optoelectronic devices can be tailored to design for specific optical application by an appropriate choice of the superlattice structure parameters.

Method and apparatus for contour mapping using synthetic aperture radar

By using two SAR antennas spaced a known distance, B, and oriented at substantially the same look angle to illuminate the same target area, pixel data from the two antennas may be compared in phase to determine a difference delta phi from which a slant angle theta is determined for each pixel point from an equation Delta phi = (2 pi B/lambda)sin(theta - alpha), where lambda is the radar wavelength and alpha is the roll angle of the aircraft. The height, h, of each pixel point from the aircraft is determined from the equation h = R cos theta, and from the known altitude, a, of the aircraft above sea level, the altitude (elevation), a', of each point is determined from the difference a - h. This elevation data may be displayed with the SAR image by, for example, quantizing the elevation at increments of 100 feet starting at sea level, and color coding pixels of the same quantized elevation. The distance, d, of each pixel from the ground track of the aircraft used for the display may be determined more accurately from the equation d = R sin theta.

Optical constants of GaAs-AlGaAs superlattices and multiple quantum wells

The optical properties of GaAs-Al sub x Ga sub 1-xAs superlattices are calculated as a function of the frequency and superlattice structure. The comutations are performed using a partition method which combines the vectors k.p method with the pseudopotential technique. The influence of the super-structure on the electronic properties of the systems is accounted for by appropriate quantization conditions. The anisotropy and structure dependence of the dielectric constant result mainly from the contribution of the gamma region while the contributions of the other regions of the Brillouin zone are rather insensitive to the superlattice structure. The superlattice index of refraction values are shown to attain maxima at the various quantized transition energies, where for certain structures, the difference between the refractive indices of the superlattices and its corresponding Al sub x Ga sub 1-xAs alloy can be as large as 2%. In general results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Antenna arraying of Voyager telemetry signals by symbol stream combining

Telemetry signals received from the Voyager 2 spacecraft at Deep Space Stations at Parkes and Canberra, Australia, on February 6, 1986, were combined by the method of symbol stream combining. This second demonstration of symbol stream combining followed the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) demonstration at Giacobini-Zinner encounter in September 1985. The Voyager demonstration was at a symbol rate of 43.2 ksymb/s, compared to 2 ksymb/s for ICE. Recording, playback, and combining at this higher rate were demonstrated. The average symbol signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the combined data was 2.84 dB, or 0.23 dB less than the sum of the SNRs of the two imput symbol streams. This 0.23 loss from ideal combining was due to use of 4-bit quantization of the input symbol stream and imperfect scaling. A practical implementation with 8-bit quantization could achieve combining losses of under 0.05 dB over a wide dynamic range of input signal levels.

Origin of gauge invariance in string theory

A first quantization of the space-time embedding Chi exp mu and the world-sheet metric rho of the open bosonic string. The world-sheet metric rho decouples from S-matrix elements in 26 dimensions. This formulation of the theory naturally includes 26-dimensional gauge transformations. The gauge invariance of S-matrix elements is a direct consequence of the decoupling of rho. Second quantization leads to a string field Phi(Chi exp mu, rho) with a gauge-covariant equation of motion.

A high quality image compression scheme for real-time applications

Many image compression or coding techniques have been developed to reduce the amount of bits of information needed to represent digital images. Among these, Vector Quantization (VQ) seems to have the edge; its theoretical distortion is lower than that of other block coding techniques at comparable bit rates. However, the application of Vector Quantization remains limited due to its high computational complexity. Presently, it is limited to low to medium quality image compression. In this paper it is shown that VQ can be mapped onto VLSI implementation via systolic type architecture, making real time application possible. In addition, it is shown that using multistage or cascade VQ high quality images can be obtained at very low bit rates for real time applications while using smaller codebooks than is necessary in single stage VQ. Examples of processed images are presented.

Nonlinear Dynamic Compensation For Feedback Control

Nonlinear dynamic compensation scheme enhances stability of feedback control system in which feedback signal includes quantization noise. Compensator slows response of control system at low error signals to diminish effect of quantization noise but provides faster response at large error signals to speed correction of large errors.

A very high speed lossless compression/decompression chip set

A chip is described that will perform lossless compression and decompression using the Rice Algorithm. The chip set is designed to compress and decompress source data in real time for many applications. The encoder is designed to code at 20 M samples/second at MIL specifications. That corresponds to 280 Mbits/second at maximum quantization or approximately 500 Mbits/second under nominal conditions. The decoder is designed to decode at 10 M samples/second at industrial specifications. A wide range of quantization levels is allowed (4...14 bits) and both nearest neighbor prediction and external prediction are supported. When the pre and post processors are bypassed, the chip set performs high speed entropy coding and decoding. This frees the chip set from being tied to one modeling technique or specific application. Both the encoder and decoder are being fabricated in a 1.0 micron CMOS process that has been tested to survive 1 megarad of total radiation dosage. The CMOS chips are small, only 5 mm on a side, and both are estimated to consume less than 1/4 of a Watt of power while operating at maximum frequency.
