Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity Oscillations in Relation to the Putative Kitaev Spin Liquid Phase of α-RuCl 3

In the presence of an external magnetic field, the Kitaev model could host either gapped topological anyons or gapless Majorana fermions. In α-RuCl 3 , the gapped and gapless cases are only separated by a 30° rotation of the in-plane magnetic field vector. The presence or absence of the spectral gap is key for understanding the thermal transport behavior in α-RuCl 3 . Here, we study the anisotropy of the oscillatory features of thermal conductivity in α-RuCl 3 . We examine the oscillatory features of thermal conductivities (κ / / a, κ / / b) with fixed external fields and find distinct behavior for the gapped (B / / a) and gapless (B / / b) scenarios. Furthermore, we track the evolution of thermal resistivity (λ α ) and its oscillatory features with the rotation of in-plane magnetic fields from B / / b to B / / a. The thermal resistivity λ(B, φ) displays distinct rotational symmetries before and after the emergence of the field-induced Kitaev spin liquid phase. These results suggest that oscillatory features of thermal conductivity in α-RuCl 3 are closely linked to the putative Kitaev spin liquid phase and its excitations.

Spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice

We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg model with spin-1 local degree of freedom on a honeycomb lattice numerically by the infinite density matrix renormalization group method on a cylinder geometry. By tuning the relative value of the Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange couplings, we obtain the phase diagram with two spin liquid phases and four symmetry-broken phases. Here, we identify that the spin liquid phases are gapless by calculating the central charge at the pure Kitaev points without the Heisenberg interactions. Comparing to its spin-1/2 counterpart, the position and number of gapless modes of the spin-1 case are quite different. Due to the approximate Z 2 local conservations, the expectation value of the Wilson loop operator measuring the flux of each plaquette stays near to 1, and the static spin-spin correlations remain short range in the entire spin liquid phases.

Analytic calculation of the vison gap in the Kitaev spin liquid

Although the ground-state energy of the Kitaev spin liquid can be calculated exactly, the associated vison gap energy has to date only been calculated numerically from finite size diagonalization. Here we show that the phase shift for scattering Majorana fermions off a single bond-flip can be calculated analytically, leading to a closed-form expression for the vison gap energy Δ = 0.2633 J . Generalizations of our approach can be applied to Kitaev spin liquids on more complex lattices such as the three dimensional hyper-octagonal lattice.

Beyond magnons in Nd 2 ScNbO 7 : An Ising pyrochlore antiferromagnet with all-in–all-out order and random fields

We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Nd 3+ pyrochlore Nd 2 ScNbO 7 . Susceptibility and magnetization show an easy-axis moment, and heat capacity reveals a phase transition to long-range order at T N =371(2) mK with a fully recovered ΔS=Rln(2), 53% of it recovered for T>T N . Elastic neutron scattering shows a long-range all-in all-out magnetic order with low-Q diffuse elastic scattering. Inelastic neutron scattering shows a low-energy flat band, indicating a magnetic Hamiltonian similar to Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Nuclear hyperfine excitations measured by ultra-high-resolution neutron backscattering indicate a distribution of static electronic moments below T N , which may be due to B-site disorder influencing Nd crystal electric fields. Analysis of heat-capacity data shows an unexpected T-linear or T 3/2 term which is inconsistent with conventional magnon quasiparticles, but is consistent with fractionalized spinons or gapless local spin excitations. We use legacy data to show similar behavior in Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Comparing local static moments also reveals a suppression of the nuclear Schottky anomaly in temperature, evidencing a fraction of Nd sites with nearly zero static moment, consistent with exchange-disorder-induced random singlet formation. Finally, taken together, these measurements suggest an unusual fluctuating magnetic ground state which mimics a spin liquid, but may not actually be one.

Fragility of the nematic spin liquid induced by diagonal couplings in the square-lattice SU(3) model

Here, we present a large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of the spin-1 SU(3) bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice, which was suggested to host a nematic spin liquid state in recent DMRG calculations. We report that this spin liquid appears to strongly compete with a three-sublattice magnetic order. To further study the competition between the two states, and the reason of the emergent nematic spin liquid, we included an additional next-nearest-neighbor SU(3) symmetric interactions along one of the two plaquette diagonal directions. This allows to tune the square-lattice model to the triangular-lattice model. By computing spin correlation functions and various order parameters, we find that the three-sublattice order may develop at infinitesimal additional new coupling, at least within the precision of our study. Compared with the previous findings that the nematic spin liquid is stable in extended parameter regions with additional couplings that respect the lattice symmetries of the square lattice, we argue that here the diagonal couplings, which frustrate the bipartite-lattice structure, rapidly suppress the two-sublattice fluctuations and the three-sublattice order thus wins. This numerical result is consistent with the conjecture that the nematic spin liquid emerges from the competition between two- and three-sublattice fluctuations.

Electronic spectra with paramagnon fractionalization in the single-band Hubbard model

We examine spectral properties of a recently proposed theory of the intermediate temperature pseudogap metal phase of the cuprates. We show that this theory can be obtained from the familiar paramagnon theory of nearly antiferromagnetic metals by fractionalizing the paramagnon into two “hidden” layers of S = 1 / 2 spins. The first hidden layer of spins hybridizes with the electrons as in a Kondo lattice heavy Fermi liquid, whereas the second hidden layer of spins forms a spin liquid with fractionalized spinon excitations. Here, we compute the imaginary part of the electronic self-energy induced by the spinon excitations.

Breakdown of order fractionalization in the CPT model

Here, we present an analysis of the half-filled CPT model, an analytically tractable Kondo lattice model with Yao-Lee spin-spin interactions on a 3D hyperoctagon lattice, proposed by Coleman, Panigrahi, and Tsvelik. Previous studies have established that the CPT model exhibits odd-frequency triplet superconductivity and order fractionalization. Through asymptotic analyses in the small- and large- Kondo coupling limits, we identify a quantum critical point at , marking a transition from a superconductor to a Kondo insulator. By estimating the vison gap energy to account for thermal gauge fluctuations, we determine the energy scales governing the thermal breakdown of order fractionalization. Moreover, at large the Kondo insulator undergoes orbital decoupling, leading to the formation of a decoupled Kitaev orbital liquid. These findings and analogies with the -gauged model lead us to propose a tentative phase diagram for the CPT model at half-filling.

Mott insulators in moiré transition metal dichalcogenides at fractional fillings: Slave-rotor mean-field theory

In this study, we study a slave-rotor mean-field theory of an extended Hubbard model, applicable to transition metal dichalcogenide moiré systems, that captures both the formation of Wigner crystals as well as exotic spin states on top of these charge backgrounds. Phase diagrams are mapped out for different choices of long-range Coulomb repulsion strength, reproducing several experimentally found Wigner crystal states. Assuming unbroken time-reversal symmetry, we find several spin-liquid states as well as dimer states at fractional fillings. While spin dimer states are always found to have the lowest mean-field energy, several spin-liquid states are energetically competitive and may be stabilized by including gauge fluctuations or further interaction terms. We further discuss possible experimental signatures of these states pertinent to two-dimensional moiré heterostructures.

Four-Spin Terms and the Origin of the Chiral Spin Liquid in Mott Insulators on the Triangular Lattice

At strong repulsion, the triangular-lattice Hubbard model is described by s=1/2 spins with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions and exhibits conventional 120° order. Using the infinite density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization, we study the effect of the additional four-spin interactions naturally generated from the underlying Mott-insulator physics of electrons as the repulsion decreases. Although these interactions have historically been connected with a gapless ground state with emergent spinon Fermi surface, we find that, at physically relevant parameters, they stabilize a chiral spin liquid (CSL) of Kalmeyer-Laughlin (KL) type, clarifying observations in recent studies of the Hubbard model. Finally, we present a self-consistent solution based on a mean-field rewriting of the interaction to obtain a Hamiltonian with similarities to the parent Hamiltonian of the KL state, providing a physical understanding for the origin of the CSL.

Low-energy edge signatures of the Kitaev spin liquid

Recent experimental work indicates that the Kitaev spin liquid may be realizable close to zero magnetic field in exfoliated 𝛼−RuCl 3 flakes, thus providing a more versatile setting for studying non-Abelian anyons. Here, we propose a robust nanoscale signature of the Kitaev spin liquid that results from its edge states and manifests in the low-energy spin dynamics. In particular, we highlight a singular peak in the dynamical spin structure factor of a zigzag edge whose energy scales linearly with only one component of the magnetic field. This sharp feature in the local spin dynamics directly reflects the bond-directional Kitaev spin interactions and, more generally, the projective symmetries of the Kitaev spin liquid. In conclusion, we demonstrate that our proposed signature survives in the presence of edge disorder as well as non-Kitaev interactions, and provide detailed guidelines for experimentally observing it using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and color-center relaxometry.

Unconventional room-temperature carriers in the triangular-lattice Mott insulator TbInO3

Abstract The strong correlations between electrons in Mott insulator materials may produce highly entangled many-body states with unconventional emergent excitations. The signatures of such excitations, if any, are commonly believed to be observable only at low temperatures. Here, we challenge this common belief and show using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy that exotic carriers exist even at room temperature in TbInO 3 , a candidate material for realizing a low-temperature quantum spin-liquid phase. In particular, over the entire temperature range of 1.5–300 K, we observe a quadratic frequency dependence in the real part of the in-plane optical conductivity as well as Fano asymmetry of an optical phonon mode strongly interacting with the excitation continuum. These features are robust even under external magnetic fields of up to 7 T. Our data confirm the presence of emergent charge carriers within the Mott charge gap of TbInO 3 , suggesting that it is possible to probe and manipulate highly entangled quantum many-body states at room temperature.

Possible Superconductivity with a Bogoliubov Fermi Surface in a Lightly Doped Kagome U(1) Spin Liquid

Whether the doped t-J model on the Kagome lattice supports exotic superconductivity has not been decisively answered. In this paper, we propose a new class of variational states for this model and perform large-scale variational Monte Carlo simulation on it. The proposed variational states are parameterized by the SU(2)-gauge-rotation angles, as the SU(2)-gauge structure hidden in the Gutzwiller-projected mean-field ansatz for the undoped model is broken upon doping. These variational doped states smoothly connect to the previously studied U(1) π-flux or 0-flux states, and energy minimization among them yields a chiral noncentrosymmetric nematic superconducting state with 2 × 2-enlarged unit cell. Moreover, this pair density wave state possesses a finite Fermi surface for the Bogoliubov quasi particles. We further study experimentally relevant properties of this intriguing pairing state.

Phase diagram of the anisotropic triangular lattice Hubbard model

In a recent study [Phys. Rev. X 10, 021042 (2020)], we showed using large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations on infinite cylinders that the triangular lattice Hubbard model has a chiral spin liquid phase. In this work, we introduce hopping anisotropy in the model, making one of the three distinct bonds on the lattice stronger or weaker compared with the other two. We implement the anisotropy in two inequivalent ways, one which respects the mirror symmetry of the cylinder and one which breaks this symmetry. In the full range of anisotropy, from the square lattice to weakly coupled one-dimensional chains, we find a variety of phases. Near the isotropic limit we find the three phases identified in our previous work: metal, chiral spin liquid, and 120$^\circ$ spiral order; we note that a recent paper suggests the apparently metallic phase may actually be a Luther-Emery liquid, which would also be in agreement with our results. Furthermore, when one bond is weakened by a relatively small amount, the ground state quickly becomes the square lattice N\'{e}el order. When one bond is strengthened, the story is much less clear, with the phases that we find depending on the orientation of the anisotropy and on the cylinder circumference. While our work is to our knowledge the first DMRG study of the anisotropic triangular lattice Hubbard model, the overall phase diagram we find is broadly consistent with that found previously using other methods, such as variational Monte Carlo and dynamical mean field theory.

Topological Superconductivity in the Doped Chiral Spin Liquid on the Triangular Lattice

It has been established that the undoped, i.e., δ = 0 , system has a CSL ground state in the parameter region 0.32 ≤ J χ / J ≤ 0.56 . Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with a Luther-Emery liquid with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations but short-range spin-spin correlations. In particular, the superconducting correlations, whose pairing symmetry is consistent with d ± i d wave, are dominant at all hole doping concentrations. Overall, our results provide direct evidences that doping the CSL on the triangular lattice can naturally give rise to topological superconductivity.

Footprints of Kitaev spin liquid in the Fano lineshape of Raman-active optical phonons

We develop a theoretical description of the Raman spectroscopy in the spin-phonon-coupled Kitaev system and show that it can provide observable signatures of fractionalized excitations characteristic of the underlying spin-liquid phase. In particular, we obtain the explicit form of the phonon modes and construct the coupling Hamiltonian based on the D 3d symmetry. We then systematically compute the Raman intensity and show that the spin-phonon coupling renormalizes phonon propagators and generates the salient Fano lineshape. We find that the temperature evolution of the Fano lineshape displays two crossovers, and the low-temperature crossover shows pronounced magnetic-field dependence. We thus identify the observable effect of the Majorana fermions and the Z2 gauge fluxes encoded in the Fano lineshape. Our results are consistent with the phonon Raman scattering experiments in the candidate material α-RuCl 3 .

Pairing tendencies in the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model

Here, we study the impact of hole doping on the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. We investigate the pairing tendencies and correlation functions in the framework of a t - J - K model using density matrix renormalization group calculations on three-leg cylinders. In the case of the pure Kitaev model, which realizes a quantum spin-liquid phase at half-filling, we find that binding of two holes only occurs at low values of the hopping, where the holes are slow. We have theoretically verified that pair formation occurs in the limit of immobile holes, where the pure Kitaev model remains exactly solvable. When we instead fix the hopping at an intermediate, more realistic, value, and vary the Heisenberg and Kitaev interaction strengths, we find pairing tendencies only in the Néel phase. This is in contrast to prior mean-field calculations, highlighting the importance of accounting for the kinetic energy of dopants in generalized Kitaev models. Interestingly, we also find signatures of pair-density wave formation over the studied range of model parameters, namely, a periodic modulation of the charge density as well as the spin-spin and pair-pair correlations in real space. Moreover, we present a comparative study of the different correlations as a function of doping. We finally discuss the potential for experimentally observing the studied physics in quantum materials and heterostructures.
