Readout system for radiation detector

Improved electrical circuit determines the amount of light detected by a photomultiplier tube when its output signal is in the dark-current range of the tube. The low-intensity light to which the tube responds arises from a thermo-luminescent ionized dosimeter.

Literal readout of identification signals in Morse code

Instrument, designed for mounting in aircraft instrument panels, decodes identification signals received in Morse from VOR or ILS transmitters as they are received and displays the literal equivalent. Without elaboration it cannot decode numbers.

Pulse-height analyzer with digital readout

Feedback-controlled pulse-amplitude integrator and amplifier is used as an analog-to-digital converter that converts event-liberated charges, emanating from a nuclear-particle detector, directly to numbers rather than to analog-dependent voltages.

Dual current readout for precision plating

Bistable amplifier prevents damage in the low range circuitry of a dual scale ammeter. It senses the current and switches automatically to the high range circuitry as the current rises above a preset level.

ERTS direct readout ground station study

A system configuration which provides for a wide variety of user requirements is described. Two distinct user types are considered and optimized configurations are provided. Independent satellite transmission systems allow simultaneous signal transmission to Regional Collection Centers via a high data rate channel and to local users who require near real time consumption of lower rate data. In order to maximize the ultimate utility of this study effort, a parametric system description is given such that in essence a shopping list is provided. To achieve these results, it was necessary to consider all technical disciplines associated with high resolution satellite imaging systems including signal processing, modulation and coding, recording, and display techniques. A total systems study was performed.

Working model of the London moment readout system

The operating characteristics of a porous plug which has liquid helium on one side and which is pumped on under vacuum on the other side are discussed. The system investigated consists of a container of liquid helium which is well isolated, and the only means for mass flow out of the container is through a plug mode of porous material. The plug was assumed to have liquid helium on the container side while the other side of the plug is evacuated. Three cases were considered: (1) perfect evacuation with zero pressure, (2) evacuation through a chocked orifice, and (3) evacuation through a long, small diameter pipe with heating. Mass flow rates were determined along with mass flow at temperature above the lambda point temperature. Solutions were obtained for normal and superfluid velocity.

A SQUID readout system for a superconducting gyroscope

A design of a read out system for a superconducting gyroscope to be used in an orbiting gyroscope relativity experiment is discussed. The 'London Moment' of the superconducting rotor, which lies along the spin axis of the rotor, will be measured with a SQUID-type magnetometer. The SQUID will be built around the gyro rotor, with a very close spacing to give an inductance between 10 millionths and 1 millionth Hy. A SQUID of this design should resolve 2.07 times 10 to the minus 19th weber. The angular resolution of the gyroscope will then be 0.0035 arc-second, which is sufficient for the intended experiment.

Portable high-resolution laser monochromator-interferometer with multichannel electronic readout

A high-resolution 0.4-m monochromator is described for use in wavelength diagnosis of tunable pulsed and CW laser sources in the 3000-10,000-A region. The f/20 design uses an echelle grating in an over-and-under Ebert configuration with a scanned photodiode array to provide a real-time multichannel display of spectral output. Absolute wavelength may be determined to 0.1 A with the monochromator, and a Fabry-Perot interferometer attachment extends linewidth measurement capability to 0.01 A or better. Spectra are displayed on a storage oscilloscope, and calculation of laser parameters is explained. The instrument measures 70 cm long x 15 cm wide x 20 cm high.

Development of a London moment readout for a superconducting gyroscope

A gyroscope for verifying certain predictions of General Relativity is under development at Stanford. A method of measuring the gyroscope orientation based on the use of the London moment and a SQUID magnetometer is described. It is estimated that the required sensitivity of 1 milliarc-sec can be achieved in a bandwidth of 2.5 times 10 to the -6th Hz.

Circular-scan streak tube with solid-state readout

A circular-scan streak tube designed for use in a laser ranging system is described. Electrostatic focusing is used between the photocathode and a microchannel plate, and electrons from the microchannel plate are proximity focused onto an output phosphor screen. Electron beam deflection is achieved by driving two orthogonal sets of deflection plate assemblies in phase quadrature at a frequency of 200 MHz. The light intensity in the output beam trace is measured by using a circular Reticon array of 720 photodiodes, which is fiber-optically coupled to the output phosphor screen of the tube. Sample measurements of frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser-pulse waveforms are given. Also the output beamwidth has been measured at the 200-MHz deflection frequency. The results suggest a limiting resolution of 33 psec for the circular-scan streak tube used for these tests.

Evaluation of a Si:Ga direct readout array

Preliminary results from the Hughes 58 x 62 gallium-doped silicon infrared array are presented. The device functioned predictably and repeatedly at the low temperatures for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). Power dissipation was reduced to acceptable levels while still maintaining the device speed. The infrared response was excellent and the degree of anomalous effects was compatible to conventional photoconductors.
