Evaluating the Hybrid Modelling Competition: A Step Towards Developing Good Modelling Practice

Hybrid modelling, a combination of mechanistic and data-driven modelling, is a promis¬ing approach to advance current mathematical models towards improved deci¬sion support tools for today's water-related challenges. Researchers have been develop¬ing guidelines or references for good modelling practices in the water field for mecha¬nistic (Rieger et al., 2012) and data-driven (Zhu et al., 2023) modelling, respectively. However, good modelling practices for hybrid modelling are currently missing (Schneider et al., 2022). Therefore, the International Water Association’s (IWA) hybrid modelling working group initiated the first competition on a data science competition platform (i.e. Kaggle) for water resource recovery modelling at the Watermatex con¬ference in September 2023 in Quebec. The main objective of this competition was to gain insights and experience to create good modelling practices. Further goals were to motivate students, researchers, and practitioners model, foster a vibrant and engaged community, and evaluate the efficacy of com¬petitions in solving modelling challenges within the water domain. Our next goal is that facilities will measure and gather relevant data for future competitions to solve their challenges from a modeller’s perspective.

Full-Scale Development and Piloting of a Hybrid Digital Twin for Wastewater Operations Optimization

This full-scale pilot of a machine learning based nutrient controller/digital twin is being done as part of The Water Research Foundation (WRF) project 5121: Development of Innovative Predictive Control Strategies for Nutrient Removal. The overall goal of this project is to develop and full-scale test a hybrid (machine learning + mechanistic model) nutrient management controller at four different water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). The controller demonstrates both short-term optimization functions and predictive capabilities. This project includes the design of the controller, its performance at the WRRFs, and a description of the future improvements.

Mapping Rare Earths and Toxics in E-Waste via Hyperspectral Imaging and Machine Learning

Electronic waste (e-waste) presents a mounting challenge to environmental sustainability due to its complex composition, which includes high-value rare earth elements, hazardous organic compounds, and non-recyclable plastics. Accurate and scalable material classification is essential for enabling efficient resource recovery and safe recycling practices. This study introduces a confidence-aware classification pipeline that combines mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging (HSI), spectral angle mapping (SAM), and iterative machine learning to perform pixel-level material identification across e-waste devices. A curated spectral library encompassing artificial materials (e.g., plastic iron oxide, galvanized metals), minerals (e.g., allanite, hematite), and organic compounds (e.g., benzanthracene, toluene) was used to generate pseudo-labels, each assigned a confidence score based on SAM-derived spectral similarity. High-confidence samples from seven consumer electronics—digital cameras, keyboards, laptop fans, modems, motherboards, TV remotes, and speakers—were iteratively expanded and classified using models such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Classifier, Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLSDA) and Logistic Regression. The best-performing classifiers achieved macro F1 scores approaching 1.0. Results revealed widespread plastic content (dominated by plastic iron oxide), the presence of rare earth-bearing minerals like cerium-containing allanite, and pervasive detection of hazardous organics such as benzanthracene. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) visualizations and confusion matrices confirmed high separability and robust classification performance. This methodology enables precise, non-destructive, and scalable classification of heterogeneous e-waste streams. It supports automated, hazard-aware sorting in recycling workflows, facilitating selective recovery of critical materials and compliance with circular economy goals. The confidence-aware framework provides a foundation for real-time deployment in industrial settings, offering significant implications for smart e-recycling infrastructure and policy-driven material stewardship.

Thermomechanical Separation of Biogenic and Non-biogenic Carbon from Non-Recyclable MSW

The effective separation of biogenic and non-biogenic carbon from non-recyclable municipal solid waste (n-MSW) presents a significant challenge in the United States. Currently, there are no efficient methods available to address this issue, hindering the potential for maximizing waste utilization and reducing landfilling rates. This project aims to develop and implement a combine thermomechanical separation techniques to separate biogenic and non-biogenic carbon within n-MSW, ultimately facilitating greater resource recovery and enhancing the efficiency and environmental impact of waste management practices.

Analysis of Space Shuttle Ground Support System Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery Processes and Resources

As part of the FDIR (Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery) Project for the Constellation Program, a task was designed within the context of the Constellation Program FDIR project called the Legacy Benchmarking Task to document as accurately as possible the FDIR processes and resources that were used by the Space Shuttle ground support equipment (GSE) during the Shuttle flight program. These results served as a comparison with results obtained from the new FDIR capability. The task team assessed Shuttle and EELV (Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle) historical data for GSE-related launch delays to identify expected benefits and impact. This analysis included a study of complex fault isolation situations that required a lengthy troubleshooting process. Specifically, four elements of that system were considered: LH2 (liquid hydrogen), LO2 (liquid oxygen), hydraulic test, and ground special power.
