Orbital Maintenance for the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope: The Effects of Solar Radiation Pressure and Navigation Accuracies on Station Keeping

The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), a NASA observatory designed to investigate dark energy and astrophysics, is planned for a launch in 2025 to orbit the Sun-Earth L2 (SEL2) Libration Point. Due to the instability of the SEL2 environment, WFIRST must perform maneuvers to remain in its mission orbit. This paper investigates how different error sources affect the resulting stationkeeping delta v for WFIRST. We study how Solar Radiation Pressure (SRP) modeling affects WFIRST's orbital motion and stability, and how SRP combined with Orbit Determination (OD) errors drive the stationkeeping maneuver magnitudes. Our goal is to determine the best way to model WFIRST's SRP so that we minimize its impact on total stationkeeping delta v required over the mission lifetime.

Orbital Maintenance for the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope: Effects of Solar Radiation Pressure and Navigation Accuracies on Station Keeping.

The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) is a NASA observatorydesigned to answer questions about dark energy and astrophysics, planned for alaunch in 2025 to orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 (SEL2) Libration Point. Due tothe instability of the SEL2 vicinity, WFIRST must perform station keeping maneuversto remain in orbit. This paper reviews different navigation solutions and SRP modelingtechniques that are being considered when planning these maneuvers. In this paper,we will describe station keeping strategy, we will explore the possibility of using an on-boardnavigation system and finally study how Solar Radiation Pressure (SRP) affectsits orbital motion and controllability.

Solar activity influences on atmospheric electricity and on some structures in the middle atmosphere

Only processes in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere are reviewed. General aspects of global atmospheric electricity are summarized in Chapter 3 of NCR (1986); Volland (1984) has outlined the overall problems of atmospheric electrodynamics; and Roble and Hays (1982) published a summary of solar effects on the global circuit. The solar variability and its atmospheric effects (overview by Donelly et al, 1987) and the solar-planetary relationships (survey by James et al. 1983) are so extremely complex that only particular results and selected papers of direct relevance or historical importance are compiled herein.

The linear Fresnel lens solar concentrator: Transverse tracking error effects

The solar concentration performance of a line focusing, flat base Fresnel lens in the presence of small transverse tracking errors was analyzed. Solar transmittance of the lens and focal plane imaging characteristics were evaluated. Transmission losses by reflectance and material absorption were also studied.

Photon-degradation effects in terrestrial silicon solar cells

The effect of instability in terrestrial solar cells and identification of mechanisms involved are presented. The effect is similar to photon-induced degradation in radiation-damaged space solar cells, with reduction in cell output in n(+)/p cells upon exposure to illumination or upon the application of a sufficiently high forward bias. It was found that the photon-degradation effect is caused by a recombination center identified as a complex of a lattice defect and a silver atom or cluster of atoms. The center is electrically inactive in its ground state but can be activated by raising the minority-carrier quasi-Fermi level to coincide with the position of the latent-center level in the band gap, or by direct excitation of electrons from the valence band to the latent-center level. Photon degradation can be prevented by avoiding the introduction of silver through the use of a clean diffusion system and clean initial material, or by eliminating lattice damage by sufficient surface material removal prior to diffusion and restricting diffusion temperatures to 875 C or below.

Long-term temperature effects on GaAs solar cells

The thermal degradation of AlGaAs solar cells resulting from a long-term operation in a space environment is investigated. The solar cell degradation effects caused by zinc and aluminum diffusion as well as deterioration by arsenic evaporation are presented. Also, the results are presented of experimental testing and measurements of various GaAs solar cell properties while the solar cell was operating in the temperature range of 27 C to 350 C. In particular, the properties of light current voltage curves, dark current voltage curves, and spectral response characteristics are given. Finally, some theoretical models for the annealing of radiation damage over various times and temperatures are included.
