Nickelate Superconductivity without Rare‐Earth Magnetism: (La,Sr)NiO 2

Abstract The occurrence of unconventional superconductivity in cuprates has long motivated the search for manifestations in other layered transition metal oxides. Recently, superconductivity is found in infinite‐layer nickelate (Nd,Sr)NiO 2 and (Pr,Sr)NiO 2 thin films, formed by topotactic reduction from the perovskite precursor phase. A topic of much current interest is whether rare‐earth moments are essential for superconductivity in this system. In this study, it is found that with significant materials optimization, substantial portions of the La 1− x Sr x NiO 2 phase diagram can enter the regime of coherent low‐temperature transport ( x = 0.14 ‐ 0.20), with subsequent superconducting transitions and a maximum onset of ≈9 K at x = 0.20. Additionally, the unexpected indication of a superconducting ground state in undoped LaNiO 2 is observed, which likely reflects the self‐doped nature of the electronic structure. Combining the results of (La/Pr/Nd) 1− x Sr x NiO 2 reveals a generalized superconducting dome, characterized by systematic shifts in the unit cell volume and in the relative electron‐hole populations across the lanthanides.

High-precision measurements of half-lives for 69 Ge, 73 Se, 83 Sr, 85 mSr, and 63 Zn radionuclides relevant to the astrophysical p-process via photoactivation at the Madison Accelerator Laboratory

The ground state half-lives of 69 Ge, 73 Se, 83 Sr, 63 Zn, and the half-life of the 1/2 - isomer in 85 Sr have been measured with high precision using the photoactivation technique at an unconventional bremsstrahlung facility that features a repurposed medical electron linear accelerator. The γ -ray activity was counted over about 6 half-lives with a high-purity germanium detector, enclosed into an ultra low-background lead shield. The measured half-lives are: T 1/2 ( 69 Ge) = 38.82 ± 0.07 (stat) ± 0.06 (sys) h; T 1/2 ( 73 Se) = 7.18 ± 0.02 (stat) ± 0.004 (sys) h; T 1/2 ( 83 Sr) = 31.87 ± 1.16 (stat) ± 0.42 (sys) h; T 1/2 ( 85m Sr) = 68.24 ± 0.84 (stat) ± 0.11 (sys) min; T 1/2 ( 63 Zn) = 38.71 ± 0.25 (stat) ± 0.10 (sys) min. These high-precision half-life measurements will contribute to a more accurate determination of corresponding ground-state photoneutron reaction rates, which are part of a broader effort of constraining statistical nuclear models needed to calculate stellar nuclear reaction rates relevant for the astrophysical p -process nucleosynthesis.

Inorganic resins enable the increased purification efficiency of 82 Sr from rubidium targets for use in PET imaging isotope production

The 82 Sr/ 82 Rb generator system has found use in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of myocardial perfusion. 82 Sr is produced by proton irradiation of Rb metal/RbCl salt followed by chemical separation. Inorganic ion-exchangers were synthesized by hydrothermal methods and evaluated for the purification of accelerator-produced 82Sr from a RbCl target and co-produced impurities like 75 Se, Fe, Cr, and Ni. A process consisting of removal of bulk RbCl using sodium nonatitanate (SNT), then removal of remaining tracers of Rb and Se using poorly crystalline silicotitanate (pCST) is suitable for 82 Sr separation and achieves higher purity of 82 Sr vs. commonly used organic resins.

Super Resolution Digital Image Correlation (SR-DIC): an Alternative to Image Stitching at High Magnifications

Abstract Background High-resolution Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measurements have previously been produced by stitching of neighboring images, which often requires short working distances. Separately, the image processing community has developed super resolution (SR) imaging techniques, which improve resolution by combining multiple overlapping images. Objective This work investigates the novel pairing of super resolution with digital image correlation, as an alternative method to produce high-resolution full-field strain measurements. Methods First, an image reconstruction test is performed, comparing the ability of three previously published SR algorithms to replicate a high-resolution image. Second, an applied translation is compared against DIC measurement using both low- and super-resolution images. Third, a ring sample is mechanically deformed and DIC strain measurements from low- and super-resolution images are compared. Results SR measurements show improvements compared to low-resolution images, although they do not perfectly replicate the high-resolution image. SR-DIC demonstrates reduced error and improved confidence in measuring rigid body translation when compared to low resolution alternatives, and it also shows improvement in spatial resolution for strain measurements of ring deformation. Conclusions Super resolution imaging can be effectively paired with Digital Image Correlation, offering improved spatial resolution, reduced error, and increased measurement confidence.

Evidence of redox cycling as a sub-mechanism in hydrogen production during ethanol steam reforming over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x perovskite oxide catalysts

Ethanol steam reforming (ESR) is of societal interest. Here, in this work, experiments were conducted to ascertain if some of the H 2 is produced by a redox cycle involving H 2 O filling oxygen vacancies over reducible oxide catalysts. Redox cycling experiments were performed over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x (100) in ultra-high vacuum. It was found that H 2 was produced from redox cycling with alternating ethanol and water exposures over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x (100), with both half-cycles occurring at temperatures ≤800 K. In the first half-cycle, ethanol ‘directly’ reduced the surface to create oxygen vacancies (not by a CO intermediate), and in the second half-cycle water filled oxygen vacancies to make H 2 . The H 2 production during the water exposure has a half-cycle turnover frequency of >3.2 × 10 -2 molecules site -1 s -1 in the temperature range of 700–800 K, which is fast enough to be part of the ESR full catalytic cycle. Flowing both reactant gases together, ethanol and water, over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x (100) and La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x powders significantly increases hydrogen production compared to pure ethanol. The results suggest that steady state ESR includes a sub-mechanism of ethanol ‘directly’ reducing the surface to create oxygen vacancy, and water filling oxygen vacancy to make some of the H 2 by a Mars van Krevelen type mechanism.

Structure and magnetism across the Sr 2- x Ba x NiOsO 6 phase diagram: Understanding magnetic superexchange between first and third row transition metal ions

The crystal chemistry and magnetism of compositions in the Sr 2-x Ba x NiOsO 6 phase diagram have been investigated to better understand the superexchange interactions between 3d and 5d transition metal ions. Compositions with x < 1.35 crystallize with the double perovskite structure, while those with x > 1.83 crystallize in a trigonal structure that is a cation ordered variant of the 6H hexagonal perovskite structure. The Sr-rich double perovskites undergo a cubic to tetragonal distortion upon cooling that is driven by out-of-phase octahedral tilting. The tetragonal distortion occurs upon cooling below 650 K in Sr 2 NiOsO 6 . The temperature of this transition decreases as the barium content increases and is completely suppressed for x ≥ 1.2. All compositions in the double perovskite region become spin glasses below T g ≈ 40 K, due to the competition between ferromagnetic Ni–Os and antiferromagnetic Ni–Ni and Os–Os superexchange interactions. The double perovskite compositions that are rich in barium, like Sr 0.8 Ba 1.2 NiOsO 6 show some signs of magnetic ordering in small clusters, but the presence of Ba/Sr disorder inhibits long-range magnetic order. Trigonal Ba 2 NiOsO 6 orders ferrimagnetically below T C = 108 K. In conclusion, the magnetic structure of this compound contains ferromagnetic ~180° Ni–O–Os interactions and antiferromagnetic ~90° Ni–O–Os interactions, both in agreement with the Goodenough-Kanamori rules.

Opposing Effects of Impurity Ion Sr 2+ on the Heterogeneous Nucleation and Growth of Barite (BaSO 4 )

Nucleation of barite (BaSO 4 ) has broad implications in geological, environmental, and materials sciences. While impurity metals are common, our understanding of how they impact nucleation remains dim. In this work, we used classical optical microscopy compared to fast X-ray nanotomography (XnT) to investigate heterogeneous nucleation of barite on silica in situ with Sr 2+ as an impurity ion. The observed barite nucleation rates were consistent with classical nucleation theory (CNT), where barite crystals displayed a nonuniform size distribution, exhibiting distinct morphologies and incubation periods in Sr-free solutions. While undetectable with optical microscopy, nanotomography revealed that addition of Sr2+ enhances nucleation rates driven by the pre-factor in CNT, likely because both adsorbed Ba 2+ and Sr 2+ act as precursor sites on which nucleation occurs. Sr 2+ simultaneously inhibits growth, however, leading to a homogeneous distribution of smaller crystals. This finding will enable an improved predictive understanding of nucleation in natural and synthetic environments.

Hydroxylation and Cation Segregation in (La 0.5 Sr 0.5 )FeO 3-$δ$ Electrodes

Simultaneously achieving high activity and stability is the primary challenge when engineering (electro)catalysts. Transition metal perovskite oxides are employed as air electrodes for solid-oxide fuel cells and electrolyzers. However, degradation of oxygen exchange kinetics at the solid–gas interface, often linked to alkaline-earth cation segregation and precipitation, limits widespread commercialization. Here, we systematically investigated the surface degradation mechanism induced by gas-phase impurities in La 0.5 Sr 0.5 )FeO 3-$δ$ (LSF55) thin-film electrodes by varying the concentration of H 2 O, SO 2 , and CO 2 . Degradation of the area-specific resistance in ambient and humidified synthetic air is significantly greater than in dry ambient and dry synthetic air, pointing to the importance of water vapor. Time-resolved, in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy performed in O 2 showed that nonbulk Sr is present on the surface before the exposure to water vapor. Upon introduction of water vapor, neither additional Sr segregation nor precipitation driven by water vapor is a necessary condition for degradation. Rather, hydroxylation of the surface induces irreversible and significant degradation. At the same time, we show that Sr migration driven by water vapor is partially reversible. These fundamental insights can be used for the rational design of electrodes with improved catalytic stability.

Study of Polycrystalline Bulk Sr 3 OsO 6 Double-Perovskite Insulator: Comparison with 1000 K Ferromagnetic Epitaxial Films

Polycrystalline Sr 3 OsO 6 , which is an ordered double-perovskite insulator, is synthesized via solid-state reaction under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions of 1200 ° C and 6 GPa. The synthesis enables us to conduct a comparative study of the bulk form of Sr3OsO6 toward revealing the driving mechanism of 1000 K ferromagnetism, which has recently been discovered for epitaxially grown Sr 3 OsO 6 films. Unlike the film, the bulk is dominated by antiferromagnetism rather than ferromagnetism. Thus, robust ferromagnetic order appears only when Sr 3 OsO 6 is under the influence of interfaces. A specific heat capacity of 39.6(9) X 10 -3 J mol -1 K -2 is found at low temperatures (<17 K). This value is remarkably high, suggesting the presence of possible Fermionic-like excitations at the magnetic ground state. While the bulk and film forms of Sr 3 OsO 6 share the same lattice basis and electrically insulating state, the magnetism is entirely different between them.

Interplay of Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Eu 5.08-x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 Solid Solution

Zintl phases containing rare-earth metals have gained attention due to their magnetic, electronic, and thermoelectric properties. Eu 5.08 Al 3 Sb 6 is a new structure type (monoclinic space group C2/m) that can be described as a pseudorock-salt EuSb motif with the Eu-centered Sb octahedra at the origin of the unit cell, and on the C-face center, containing either Eu (8%) or an Al 4 tetrahedron modeled as a dual tetrahedron (37.5%). The complete solid solution of Eu 5.08–x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 can be prepared; however, the cation totals vacillate from 5 to 5.24 depending on the Al content. Al K-edge XANES shows a shift to higher energy relative to the Al metal but at slightly lower energy relative to AlSb, indicating an intermediate oxidation state closer to +3 than 0. The lack of an Al K-edge shift with the incorporation of Sr suggests that changes in Sr content do not have a meaningful impact on the electronics of the Al tetrahedra. Investigation of the solid solution structures provides evidence for classifying this structure type as a polar intermetallic phase with variable composition. Magnetization measurements were collected for the solid solution and show complex magnetic ordering with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions as the Sr content increases.

Exotic Long-Range Surface Reconstruction on La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Thin Films

Due to an extremely diverse phase space, La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 , as with other manganites, offers a wide range of tunability and applications including colossal magnetoresistance and use as spin-polarized electrodes. Here, we study an unprecedented, exotic surface reconstruction (6 × 6) in La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (x = 0.3) observed via low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) shows the surface is relatively flat, with unit-cell step heights, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals a strong degree of Sr segregation at the surface. By combining electron diffraction and first-principles computations, we propose that the long-range surface reconstruction consists of a Sr-segregated surface with La (6 × 6) ordering. This study expands our understanding of manganite systems and underscores their ability to form interesting surface reconstructions, driven largely by cation segregation that can potentially be controlled for tuning surface ordering.

Nanometer-Thick Sr 2 IrO 4 Freestanding Films for Flexible Electronics

In this article, we report the structural and optical properties of nanoscale Sr 2 IrO 4 freestanding thin-films fabricated using a water-soluble Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 layer. The coherent lattice structure, phonon modes, two-magnon Raman scattering, and optical absorption spectra of the Sr 2 IrO 4 nanomembrane are analogous to those of the layered iridate epitaxial thin-films and single crystals. Remarkably, the formation of 3-unit-cell-thick SrIrO 3 and interfacial composite layers alleviates the antiphase boundaries at the Sr 2 IrO 4 /Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 interface, resulting in structurally-robust nanomembranes. Our experimental results show that this freestanding thin-film approach of layered oxides can provide techniques for tuning or realizing unprecedented states beyond conventional thin-film methods, suggesting a pathway in achieving flexible layered-oxide electronics.

Electronic nature of the pseudogap in electron-doped Sr 2 IrO 4

In high-temperature ($T_c$) cuprate superconductors, many exotic phenomena are rooted in the enigmatic pseudogap state, which has been interpreted as consisting of preformed Cooper pairs or competing orders or a combination thereof. Observation of pseudogap phenomenologically in electron-doped Sr 2 IrO 4 —the 5d electron counterpart of the cuprates, has spurred intense interest in the strontium iridates as a testbed for exploring the exotic physics of the cuprates. Here, we examine the pseudogap state of electron-doped Sr 2 IrO 4 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and parallel theoretical modeling. Our analysis demonstrates that the pseudogap state of Sr 2 IrO 4 appears without breaking the particle–hole symmetry or inducing spectral broadening which are telltale signatures of competing orders in the cuprates. We find quasiparticle dispersion and its temperature dependence in the pseudogap state of Sr 2 IrO 4 to point to an electronic order with a zero scattering wave vector and limited correlation length. Particle–hole symmetric preformed Cooper pairs are discussed as a viable mechanism for such an electronic order. The potential roles of incommensurate density waves are also discussed.

Advanced oxygen-electrode-supported solid oxide electrochemical cells with Sr(Ti,Fe)O 3–δ -based fuel electrodes for electricity generation and hydrogen production

Sr(Ti 0.3 Fe 0.7 )O 3–δ (STF) and the associated exsolution electrodes Sr 0.95 (Ti 0.3 Fe 0.63 Ru 0.07 )O 3–δ (STFR), or Sr 0.95 (Ti 0.3 Fe 0.63 Ni 0.07 )O 3–δ (STFN) are alternatives to Ni-based cermet fuel electrodes for solid oxide electrochemical cells (SOCs). They can provide improved tolerance to redox cycling and fuel impurities, and may allow direct operation with hydrocarbon fuels. However, such perovskite-oxide-based electrodes present processing challenges for co-sintering with thin electrolytes to make fuel electrode supported SOCs. Thus, they have been mostly limited to electrolyte-supported SOCs. Here, we report the first example of the application of perovskite oxide fuel electrodes in novel oxygen electrode supported SOCs (OESCs) with thin YSZ electrolytes, and demonstrate their excellent performance. The OESCs have La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3–δ –Zr 0.92 Y 0.16 O 2–δ (LSM–YSZ) oxygen electrode-supports that are enhanced via infiltration of SrTi 0.3 Fe 0.6 Co 0.1 O 3–δ , while the fuel electrodes are either Ni-YSZ, STF, STFN, or STFR. Fuel cell power density as high as 1.12 W cm –2 is obtained at 0.7 V and 800 °C in humidified hydrogen and air with the STFR electrode, 60% higher than the same cell made with a Ni-YSZ electrode. Electrolysis current density as high as –1.72 A cm –2 is obtained at 1.3 V and 800 °C in 50% H 2 O to 50% H 2 mode; the STFR cell yields a value 72% higher than the same cell made with a Ni-YSZ electrode, and competitive with the widely used conventional Ni-YSZ-supported cells. The high performance is due in part to the low resistance of the thin YSZ electrolyte, and also to the low fuel electrode polarization resistance, which decreases with fuel electrode in the order: Ni-YSZ > STF > STFN > STFR. The high performance of the latter two electrodes is due to exsolution of catalytic metal nanoparticles; the results are discussed in terms of the microstructure and properties of each electrode material, and surface oxygen exchange resistance values are obtained over a range of conditions for STF, STFN, and STFN. Furthermore, the STF fuel electrodes also provide good stability during redox cycling.

Molecular beam epitaxy of phase-pure antiperovskite Sr 3 SnO thin films

The antiperovskite oxide Sr 3 SnO has attracted substantial interest due to its topologically non-trivial band structure. Sr-deficient Sr3-xSnO can become superconducting, making it a candidate intrinsic topological superconductor. Here, we show that epitaxial, phase-pure Sr 3-x SnO films can be synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using solid Sr and SnO 2 sources. Here, we show that Sn-rich growth conditions result in a large amount of a Sn-rich impurity phase, which is challenging to detect in x-ray diffraction. Carrier densities and the amount of the impurity phase change systematically with the growth conditions, indicating that MBE provides excellent control over the films' stoichiometry. We discuss the electrical properties, including quantum interference phenomena, which support the topological nature of the films.

Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3-δ as facile and tunable oxygen sorbents for chemical looping air separation

Abstract Chemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a promising technology for oxygen generation with high efficiency. The key challenge for CLAS is to design robust oxygen sorbents with suitable redox properties and fast redox kinetics. In this work, perovskite-structured Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3 oxygen sorbents were investigated and demonstrated for oxygen production with tunable redox properties, high redox rate, and excellent thermal/steam stability. Cobalt doping at B site was found to be highly effective, 33% improvement in oxygen productivity was observed at 500 °C. Moreover, it stabilizes the perovskite structure and prevents phase segregation under pressure swing conditions in the presence of steam. Scalable synthesis of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 oxygen sorbents was carried out through solid state reaction, co-precipitation, and sol-gel methods. Both co-precipitation and sol-gel methods are capable of producing Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 sorbents with satisfactory phase purity, high oxygen capacity, and fast redox kinetics. Large scale evaluation of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 , using an automated CLAS testbed with over 300 g sorbent loading, further demonstrated the effectiveness of the oxygen sorbent to produce 95% pure O 2 with a satisfactory productivity of 0.04 g O2 g sorbent −1 h −1 at 600 °C.

Magnetism in EuAlSi and the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution solid solution

The magnetic properties of EuAlSi, a compound comprising a honeycomb lattice of Al/Si atoms and a triangular lattice of Eu atoms, are presented. By means of single-crystal x-ray diffraction, we find that EuAlSi crystallizes in an AlB 2 -type structure with space group 𝑃⁢6/mmm and unit cell parameters 𝑎 = 4.2229⁢ (10) ⁢Å and 𝑐 = 4.5268 ⁢(12)⁢ Å. Our magnetic measurements indicate that EuAlSi is a soft ferromagnetic material with 𝑇 Curie = 25.8 K. The susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, which allowed us to determine the paramagnetic Curie temperature 𝜃 𝑃 = 36.2 ⁢(1) ⁢K and an effective magnetic moment 𝜇 eff = 8.07 ⁢(1)⁢ µ 𝐵 /Eu. This value is in agreement with the theoretical value of 7.9 µ 𝐵 for Eu 2+ free ion. Moreover, we have prepared the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution, where the atoms in the triangular lattice were systematically exchanged, in order to study the evolution of the collective quantum properties from the ferromagnetic EuAlSi toward the superconducting SrAlSi. Across the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 AlSi solid solution, the unit cell parameters change linearly, following Vegard’s law, and making the system reliable for studying composition dependence of the interplay between the crystal structure and physical properties. As the Sr content increases, i.e., 𝑥 increases, we note a consistent reduction of 𝜇 eff and 𝑇 Curie . Long-range magnetic order in Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi persists up to 𝑥 = 0.95, whereas superconductivity is only observed for samples with 𝑥 > 0.97.
