ForceFinder

SAND2025-11750O ForceFinder extends the Structural Dynamics Python Libraries (SDynPy) with comprehensive tools for inverse source estimation (ISE) tasks via frequency response function (FRF) matrix inversion. The software is designed for transfer path analysis and multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) vibration control problems. It allows users to estimate sources through various algorithms, from the basic Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse to statistical learning methods such as Tikhonov regularization via an L-curve and elastic net regularization via an information criterion. ForceFinder uses an object-oriented framework, where all components of the ISE problem—such as FRFs, responses, and transformations—are stored in a "SourcePathReceiver" object. This software can be applied to any noise and vibration problem. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Sierra/SD – Verification Test Manual – 5.22

Verification and validation (V&V) of scientific computing programs are important at Sandia National Labs due to the expanding role of computational simulation in managing the United States nuclear stockpile. The complexities of structural response calculations used to analyze physical problems, the varieties of codes applied to the calculations, and the importance of accurate predictions when assessing field conditions demand confidence in the consistency and accuracy of computer codes. Confidence in the accuracy of the predictions arising from computer simulations must ultimately be gained through verification and validation. The Sierra salinas structural dynamics analysis code, Sierra/SD, is used at the DOE Laboratories, and in several DOD projects. The roles of Sierra/SD in the qualification of weapon systems and components for normal and hostile environments throughout the Stockpile-to-Target Sequence include to, • Redesign weapon components. • Certify weapon components and systems for target environments such as hypersonic vehicles. • Certify that components will survive the thermal mechanical shock loads associated with hostile environments. • Evaluate current stockpile issues, including issues associated with uncertainty quantification. • Address many other problems that are encountered in stockpile management. The Sierra/SD verification plan is described, and an evolving set of key verification tests are described in detail. The verification tests ensure the correctness of the mathematics and numerical algorithms associated with functionality describing engineering phenomena. Development is in accordance with a set of tailored Software Quality Engineering (SQE) practices. SQE practices guide the overall verification and validation effort.

Extracted Radar Columns and In Situ Sensors (RadCLss) Value-Added Product Report

In order to validate precipitation, in 2010 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility procured 3- and 5-cm wavelength radars for documenting the macrophysical, microphysical, and dynamical structure of precipitating systems. To maximize the scientific impact, ARM supported the development of an application chain to correct for various phenomena in order to retrieve the “point” values of moments of the radar spectrum and polarimetric measurements. In estimation from ARM radars, a workflow was created to directly compare radar “point” values with various in situ observations at the surface.

Colorado State University (CSU) X-Band Precipitation Radar Plan Position Indicator Data Processed with Corrected Moments in Antenna Coordinates (CMAC) Value-Added Product Report

In 2010 the U.S. We have now used the lessons learned from the processing of the 3- and 5-cm wavelength radars obtained by ARM to help process X-band radar data from the Surface Atmospheric Integrated Field Laboratory (SAIL) field campaign. This report details the motivation, science, and progress to date as well as charting a path forward.

Reconciling Heliostat and Solar Panel Wind Loads To Develop a Reduced-Order Model for Heliostat Wind Loads

This work has been carried out as part of the HelioCon Field Deployment subtask, with the aim to distill published literature in papers and standards on heliostat and solar panel wind loads to develop a reduced order model for heliostat wind loads. It is intended to be understood and applied by structural engineers and heliostat designers as inputs to determine wind loads on heliostats due to the underlying derivations and factors that influence the complex structural dynamics and wind-induced behavior of heliostats.

ARM FY2026 Radar Plan

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility maintains a suite of advanced atmospheric radar systems that serve as critical tools in ARM’s mission to provide continuous, high-quality observations for advancing the understanding and modeling of atmospheric processes. These radar systems enable detailed characterization of clouds, precipitation, and dynamic structures in the atmosphere, supporting a broad range of scientific applications. The number of deployed systems exceeds what current staffing levels can fully support for continuous 24/7/365 operation. As such, it is essential to have a clearly defined and community-informed plan that prioritizes radar operations and communicates ARM’s strategy for sustaining and evolving these observational assets. This FY2026 Radar Plan outlines ARM’s approach to managing its radar portfolio—balancing scientific impact, operational feasibility, and long-term sustainability. It reflects ARM’s continued commitment to delivering calibrated, well-documented radar data products that enable process-level studies and support the development and evaluation of weather and climate models. Through this plan, ARM aims to ensure transparency in decision-making, alignment with user needs, and support for innovative science across the facility’s fixed and mobile observatories. Given uncertainties around the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 budget, this plan was developed to assume business as usual and will be updated as budgets and plans may change. It should be noted that, given the limited timeframe involved, this plan will be more succinct than previous plans.
