We report the infrared spectrum of CD 3 79 Br and CD 3 81 Br between 900 cm -1 and 1400 cm -1 has been analyzed at high resolution. In this region, two fundamental vibrational states, v 2 = 1 and v 5 = 1, an overtone state, v 3 = 2, and a combination state, v 3 = v 6 = 1, have been analyzed for both isotopologues. As found in other halomethane molecules, strong Coriolis resonances couple the v 2 = 1 state to the v 5 = 1 state, and similar resonances were also used to describe the coupling found between the v 5 = 1 state to the v 3 = 2 state. A new determination of the K-dependent constant A 0 was performed for each isotopologue through the use of perturbation-allowed transitions. The values for A 0 determined from the analysis are 2.6001898(26) and 2.6001905(27) for CD 3 79 Br and CD 3 81 Br, respectively. Ab initio calculations were performed to examine the efficacy of high-level theoretical calculations to accurately predict spectroscopic constants. The ab initio calculations had variable success with the largest errors associated with the prediction of the ΔB rotational constants of the interacting states
Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.
BaPuO 3 and SrPuO 3 were synthesized, and their structures were refined in the orthorhombic space group Pbnm , a common distortion from the classic $Pm\bar{3}$m over barm cubic perovskite. Magnetic-susceptibility measurements, obtained as a function of temperature over the range of 1.8-320 K, exhibit temperature-dependent behavior, with evidence of long-range magnetic order at temperatures higher than their lanthanide and actinide analogues: BaPuO 3 below 164(1) K and SrPuO 3 below 76(1) K. Effective moments of 1.66(10)μ B for BaPuO 3 and 1.84(8)μ B for SrPuO 3 were obtained by fitting their paramagnetic susceptibilities using the Curie-Weiss law. Further, both are below the free-ion value of 2.68 μ B expected for a Pu 4+ 5 $\mid$ 4 ground level. Ab initio wave function calculations, performed at the relativistic complete active space level including spin-orbit coupling and with an embedded cluster approach that neglects interactions between Pu centers, were used to generate embedded-cluster Pu 4+ magnetic susceptibilities. The calculations agree well with experimental data at higher temperatures, providing evidence that a single-ion representation is sufficient to account for the observed paramagnetic behavior without the need to invoke charge transfer, disproportionation, strong covalent bonding, or other more complex electronic behavior.
Dual-site models were constructed to represent manganese nitride (Mn 4 N)-supported Ni 3 and Fe 3 clusters for NH 3 synthesis. Density functional theory calculations produced an energy barrier of approximately 0.55 eV for N–N bond activation at the interfacial nitrogen vacancy sites (N v ); also, the hydrogenation and removal of interfacial N is promoted by earth-abundant Ni and Fe metals. Steady-state microkinetic modeling revealed that the turnover frequencies of NH 3 production follow an order of Fe 3 @Mn 4 N ≈ Ni 3 @Mn 4 N > Mn 4 N > Fe >> Ni. Moreover, we present clear evidence that, before NH 3 formation, NH migrates from N v onto the metallic sites. Using N binding energy (BE N ) and the transition-state energy of N 2 activation (E TS ) as descriptors, we concluded that the beneficial effects owing to interfacial N v sites are the most pronounced when BE N is either too strong or too weak while E TS is high; otherwise, excessive N v sites may hinder catalyst performance.
Despite the similar ionic radii for Ce 3+ , U 3+ , and Pu 3+ , [(η 5 –Cp′) 3 (η 1 –Cp′)Ce] 1– (Cp′ = C 5 H 4 SiMe 3 , 1-Ce) displays a significantly longer η 1 –Cp′ distance in the solid state compared to the U 3+ and Pu 3+ analogues. To better understand this observation, a theoretical investigation was undertaken to examine the differences in bonding between the actinides 1-Pu and 1-U and how they compare with 1-Ce. The results show that although the bonding is largely ionic and dominated by ligand (2p)–metal (6d/5d) interactions, the polarization of 5f orbitals plays a significant role for 1-Pu and 1-U compared to the 4f-orbitals of 1-Ce. The lack of Ce(4f) interactions is compensated for by increased participation of the Ce(5d) orbitals relative to the actinide 6d orbitals, particularly for the σ-bound η 1 –Cp′ ligand. Furthermore, the use of multiple theoretical approaches including topological, localization, and energy decomposition approaches shows that 1-Pu and 1-U are very similar in covalent character compared to 1-Ce, though the composition and energy of the different interactions suggest that 1-U presents the strongest overall interactions.
Abstract Super‐Earths ranging up to 10 Earth masses (M E ) with Earth‐like density are common among the observed exoplanets thus far, but their measured masses and radii do not uniquely elucidate their internal structure. Exploring the phase transitions in the Mg‐silicates that define the mantle‐structure of super‐Earths is critical to characterizing their interiors, yet the relevant terapascal conditions are experimentally challenging for direct structural analysis. Here we investigated the crystal chemistry of Fe 3 O 4 as a low‐pressure analog to Mg 2 SiO 4 between 45–115 GPa and up to 3000 K using powder and single crystal X‐ray diffraction in the laser‐heated diamond anvil cell. Between 60–115 GPa and above 2000 K, Fe 3 O 4 adopts an 8‐fold coordinated Th 3 P 4 ‐type structure ( I ‐43d, Z = 4) with disordered Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ into one metal site. This Fe‐oxide phase is isostructural with that predicted for Mg 2 SiO 4 above 500 GPa in super‐Earth mantles and suggests that Mg 2 SiO 4 can incorporate both ferric and ferrous iron at these conditions. The pressure‐volume behavior observed in this 8‐fold coordinated Fe 3 O 4 indicates a maximum 4% density increase across the 6‐ to 8‐fold coordination transition in the analog Mg‐silicate. Reassessment of the FeO—Fe 3 O 4 fugacity buffer considering the Fe 3 O 4 phase relationships identified in this study reveals that increasing pressure and temperature to 120 GPa and 3000 K in Earth and planetary mantles drives iron toward oxidation.
Organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides have received extensive attention owing to their versatile structures and optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report two lead-free metal halides, (PMA) 3 BiBr 6 and (PMA) 3 SbBr 6 [PMA + : (C 6 H 5 CH 2 NH 3 ) + , as the abbreviation of phenylmethylammonium], which possess iso-structural zero-dimensional structures and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /c. (PMA) 3 BiBr 6 and (PMA) 3 SbBr 6 exhibit optical band gaps of ~3.50 and 3.40 eV, respectively, and density functional theory calculations reveal their indirect bandgap behaviors. Upon 350 and 425 nm excitation, (PMA) 3 BiBr 6 and (PMA) 3 SbBr 6 exhibit broadband emission peaking at 510 nm and 625 nm with wide full-widths at half-maximum of ~153 and 175 nm, respectively. The emission mechanism of the metal halides is attributed to self-trapped exciton emission. The relationship between the crystal structure and luminescence intensity is also discussed. Lastly, both metal halides have high decomposition temperatures and are stable for long-term storage under ambient conditions, demonstrating their potential for optoelectronic applications.
Water is an earth-abundant source for clean hydrogen production via electrochemical water electrolysis (WE). However, the surface poisoning that occurs in aqueous electrolytes drastically deactivates the electrocatalytic performance of electrodes. Here, in this study, we report electrochemically formed In 2 O 3-x (OH) y on the surface of a large (1–1.5 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide and 0.3–0.5 mm thick) single crystal of Weyl semimetal Co 3 In 2 S 2 (Co 3 In 2 S 2 /In 2 O 3-x (OH) y ) as an ultra-stable and poison tolerant electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH, addressing a bottleneck in WE. The OER activity of the powder form of Co 3 In 2 S 2 is limited by its aerophilic nature. Remarkably, the single-crystal electrodes maintained their high activity for a continuous operational period of 5 h in 1 M KOH electrolyte with/without 10 mM strong surface-poisoning ligands i.e., potassium cyanide, bipyridine, and ethylenediaminetetraacetate disodium salt. The electrodes exhibited stable OER activity for 1000 h at 100 mA cm -2 (1.73 V vs. RHE). The temperature-dependent OER polarization curves (10–70 °C) unambiguously revealed surface poisoning through the suppression of precatalytic Co-redox peaks on the bipyridine poisoned electrode, which led to the stabilization of surface Co-sites. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of pristine, poisoned and post-electrocatalytic single-crystal Co 3 In 2 S 2 electrodes revealed the existence of an In 2 O 3-x (OH) y surface phase, which could be the potential heterostructure for the origin of ultra-stable and poison tolerant OER activity.
Here, we report an investigation of the magnetic, thermodynamic, and transport properties of single-crystalline Nd 3 ScBi 5 and Pr 3 ScBi 5 . Both compounds crystallize in the hexagonal 𝑃6 3 /𝑚𝑐𝑚 space group that is common to related materials with rare-earth atoms that form twisted kagome nets. Nd 3 ScBi 5 undergoes two successive antiferromagnetic transitions, at 𝑇 𝑁 =5.6K and 𝑇 2 =4.7K. When a magnetic field is applied along [100], both 𝑇 𝑁 and 𝑇 2 are suppressed with increasing field, and multiple metamagnetic transitions are observed; in-plane anisotropy is demonstrated by a slight broadening and movement of the metamagnetic transitions when the field is applied along [110]. For H ∥ [001], 𝑇 𝑁 and 𝑇 2 exhibit only a weak field dependence and metamagnetic transitions are not observed. The magnetoresistance and Hall effect respond strongly to the metamagnetic transitions and further motivate a detailed characterization of the magnetic structures under applied fields. Pr 3 ScBi 5 , in contrast, undergoes a single antiferromagnetic transition at 𝑇 𝑁 =5.3K and a single metamagnetic transition at higher fields. These findings place Nd 3 ScBi 5 and Pr 3 ScBi 5 as promising systems for exploring anisotropic magnetism and field-driven magnetic phase transitions in intermetallic compounds.
Here, we present and characterize a new member of the RCd 3 P 3 (R=rare earth) family of materials, NdCd 3 P 3 , which possesses Nd 3+ cations arranged on well-separated triangular lattice layers. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements demonstrate a likely S eff =1/2 ground state, and also reveal the formation of long-range antiferromagnetic order at T N =0.34K. Via measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity, we characterize the electronic properties of NdCd 3 P 3 and compare results to density functional theory calculations.
Three huntite-type aluminoborates of stoichiometry RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 ( RE = Tb, Dy and Ho), namely, terbium/dysprosium/holmium trialuminium tetrakis(borate), were synthesized by slow cooling within a K 2 Mo 3 O 10 flux with spontaneous crystallization. The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) data. The synthesized borates are isostructural to the huntite [CaMg 3 (CO 3 ) 4 ] structure and crystallized within the trigonal R 32 space group. The structural parameters were compared to literature data of other huntite RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 crystals within the R 32 space group. All three borates fit well into the trends calculated from the literature data. The unit-cell parameters and volumes increase linearly with larger RE cations whereas the densities decrease. All of the crystals studied were refined as inversion twins.
The crystal structure of MgCO 3 -II has long been discussed in the literature where DFT-based model calculations predict a pressure-induced transition of the carbon atom from the sp 2 to the sp 3 type of bonding. We have now determined the crystal structure of iron-bearing MgCO 3 -II based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements using synchrotron radiation. We laser-heated a synthetic (Mg 0.85 Fe 0.15 )CO 3 single crystal at 2500 K and 98 GPa and observed the formation of a monoclinic phase with composition (Mg 2.53 Fe 0.47 )C 3 O 9 in the space group C 2/ m that contains tetrahedrally coordinated carbon, where CO 4 4- tetrahedra are linked by corner-sharing oxygen atoms to form three-membered C 3 O 9 6- ring anions. The crystal structure of (Mg 0.85 Fe 0.15 )CO 3 (magnesium iron carbonate) at 98 GPa and 300 K is reported here as well. In comparison with previous structure-prediction calculations and powder X-ray diffraction data, our structural data provide reliable information from experiments regarding atomic positions, bond lengths, and bond angles.

Typical tropospheric temperatures render possible phase states of amorphous organic aerosol (OA) particles of solid, semisolid, and liquid. This will affect the multiphase oxidation kinetics involving the organic condensed-phase and gaseous oxidants and radicals. To quantify this effect, we determined the reactive uptake coefficients (γ) of O 3 , NO 3 , and OH by substrate films composed of single and binary OA surrogate species under dry conditions for temperatures from 213 to 313 K. A temperature-controlled coated-wall flow reactor coupled to a chemical ionization mass spectrometer was applied to determine γ with consideration of gas diffusion transport limitation and gas flow entrance effects, which can impact heterogeneous reaction kinetics. The phase state of the organic substrates was probed via the poke-flow technique, allowing the estimation of the substrates' glass transition temperatures. γ values for O 3 and OH uptake to a canola oil substrate, NO 3 uptake to a levoglucosan and a levoglucosan / xylitol substrate, and OH uptake to a glucose and glucose / 1,2,6-hexanetriol substrate have been determined as a function of temperature. We observed the greatest changes in γ with temperature for substrates that experienced the largest changes in viscosity as a result of a solid-to-liquid phase transition. Organic substrates that maintain a semisolid or solid phase state and as such a relatively higher viscosity do not display large variations in heterogeneous reactivity. From 213 to 293 K, γ values of O 3 with canola oil, of NO 3 with a levoglucosan / xylitol mixture, and of OH with a glucose / 1,2,6-hexanetriol mixture and canola oil, increase by about a factor of 34, 3, 2, and 5, respectively, due to a solid-to-liquid phase transition of the substrate. These results demonstrate that the surface and bulk lifetime of the OA surrogate species can significantly increase due to the slowed heterogeneous kinetics when OA species are solid or highly viscous in the middle and upper troposphere. This experimental study will further our understanding of the chemical evolution of OA particles with subsequent important consequences for source apportionment, air quality, and climate.
PICO bubble chambers have exceptional sensitivity to inelastic dark matter-nucleus interactions due to a combination of their extended nuclear recoil energy detection window from a few keV to $O$(100 keV) or more and the use of iodine as a heavy target. Inelastic dark matter-nucleus scattering is interesting for studying the properties of dark matter, where many theoretical scenarios have been developed. This study reports the results of a search for dark matter inelastic scattering with the PICO-60 bubble chambers. The analysis reported here comprises physics runs from PICO-60 bubble chambers using CF$_{3}$I and C$_{3}$F$_{8}$. The CF$_{3}$I run consisted of 36.8 kg of CF$_{3}$I reaching an exposure of 3415 kg-day operating at thermodynamic thresholds between 7 and 20 keV. The C$_{3}$F$_{8}$ runs consisted of 52 kg of C$_{3}$F$_{8}$ reaching exposures of 1404 kg-day and 1167 kg-day running at thermodynamic thresholds of 2.45 keV and 3.29 keV, respectively. The analysis disfavors various scenarios, in a wide region of parameter space, that provide a feasible explanation of the signal observed by DAMA, assuming an inelastic interaction, considering that the PICO CF$_{3}$I bubble chamber used iodine as the target material.
In order to improve the sintering of SiC, mixtures of Al 2 O 3 and Y 2 O 3 powders are commonly included as sintering additives. The aim of this work was to use mechanically alloyed Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 mixtures as sintering additives to promote liquid phase sintering of SiC using spark plasma sintering. The results showed that milling reduced the particle size of the powders and led to the formation of complex oxide phases (YAP, YAM, and YAG) at low temperatures. As the ball milling time increased, the mass loss of specimens sintered with mechanically alloyed Al 2 O 3 –Y 2 O 3 mixtures decreased, and accordingly the relative density increased. However, the hardness and flexural strength of sintered SiC specimens first increased and then decreased. Because the specimens prepared with oxides milled for a long time contained too much YAG/YAP and accordingly too much liquid at sintering temperature. This negatively affected the mechanical properties of the SiC specimens because of the increased volume of the complex oxide phases, which have inferior mechanical properties to SiC, in the sintered specimens. In conclusion, when the ball milling time was 6h, the hardness (24.02 GPa) and flexural strength (655.61 MPa) of the SiC specimens reached maximum values.
The integration of perovskite oxides onto flexible substrates has witnessed significant advancements owing to the development of an epitaxial lift-off technique utilizing a Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 sacrificial layer. However, Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 is susceptible to instability in both air and high-temperature oxygen atmospheres, potentially leading to degradation during the growth of the functional oxide layer. In this study, we investigate the use of an oxygen-deficient La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 as capping layer, and demonstrate its ability to stabilize Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 films in ambient air. We successfully synthesized freestanding La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 membranes by etching this sacrificial layer and transferring them onto flexible polymer substrates. Importantly, the magnetic properties of the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 films are preserved in these membranes. Furthermore, our results underline that employing a thin manganite capping layer ensures both high structural quality and the preservation of functional properties in the resulting membranes.
