Some important aspects in testing high-modulus fiber composite tubes in axial tension.

Tubular specimens were potted in metal grips to determine the feasibility of this gripping method in applying multiaxial loads. Strain gage rosettes were used to assess grip transitional strains, through thickness strain variation, and strain variations along the tube length and circumference. The investigation was limited to loading graphite/epoxy and glass/epoxy tubes in axial tension. Results include modifications made to the grips to reduce transitional strains, illustrations of the tube failure modes, and some material properties. The gripping concept shows promise as a satisfactory technique for applying multiaxial loads to high-strength, high-modulus fiber composite tubes.

A new method of measurement of tension on a moving magnetic tape

The possibility of no-contact measurement of the tension on a moving magnetic tape, assuming the tape is uniform, is discussed. A scheme for calculation of the natural frequency of transverse vibrations of magnetic tape is shown. Mathematical models are developed to show the relationships of the parameters. The method is applicable to the analysis of accurate tape feed mechanisms design.

Bifurcation analysis of the onset of necking in an elastic/plastic cylinder under uniaxial tension

The bifurcation problem governing the onset of axisymmetric necking in a circular cylindrical specimen in uniaxial tension is analysed. The specimen is made of an incompressible elastic/plastic material. One end is subject to a prescribed uniform axial displacement relative to the other and both ends are shear free. The true stress at bifurcation is greater than the stress at which the maximum load is attained by an amount which depends on (a) the radius to length ratio of the specimen, (b) the ratio of the elastic shear modulus to the tangent modulus, and (c) the derivative of the tangent modulus with respect to the stress. Bifurcation takes place immediately following attainment of the maximum load when the specimen is sufficiently slender.

Analysis of the three-point-bend test for materials with unequal tension and compression properties

Structural resins have moduli and strengths which are different in tension and compression. The three-point-bend test is used extensively in their characterization. An investigation is performed to derive all the equations needed for the analysis and test data reduction of the three-point-bend test. The governing equations are derived using well-known linear structural mechanics principles and are represented graphically. The stress concentration effects in the vicinity of the load point are investigated, and failure stress and failure initiation are examined.

The effect of temperature induced surface tension gradients on bubble mechanics

Experiments were conducted to examine in detail the influence of surface tension gradient induced flow, the Marangoni effect. One set of studies provided visual results that demonstrated the occurrence and magnitude of the Marangoni effect. Another portion of the work was directed to bubble force measurements. These studies used in deflection of a very fine cantilevered wire with an attached bubble as a means of measuring force with and without temperature gradients. The experimental force data were found to check existing theoretical predictions reasonably well except for the case where the test fluid had a sizeable vapor pressure. In this situation the thermophoretic force on the bubble was much higher than predicted.

A computer program for plotting stress-strain data from compression, tension, and torsion tests of materials

A computer program for plotting stress-strain curves obtained from compression and tension tests on rectangular (flat) specimens and circular-cross-section specimens (rods and tubes) and both stress-strain and torque-twist curves obtained from torsion tests on tubes is presented in detail. The program is written in FORTRAN 4 language for the Control Data 6000 series digital computer with the SCOPE 3.0 operating system and requires approximately 110000 octal locations of core storage. The program has the capability of plotting individual strain-gage outputs and/or the average output of several strain gages and the capability of computing the slope of a straight line which provides a least-squares fit to a specified section of the plotted curve. In addition, the program can compute the slope of the stress-strain curve at any point along the curve. The computer program input and output for three sample problems are presented.

Axial alignment fixtures for tension tests of threaded specimens

Description of two axial alignment fixtures that are capable of providing very low load application eccentricity in tension tests of threaded notched cylindrical specimens. The described fixtures are simple in design, very compact, and free from the effects of friction. Also, an evaluation procedure is presented that can be used to qualify any fixture for use in sharp notch tensile tests.

Surface tension propellant acquisition system technology for Space Shuttle reaction control tanks

A program was conducted to provide the technology base for the SS/RCS flight tankage. Through a combination of analysis, subscale testing and computer predictions, a surface tension acquisition/expulsion system design was developed for the Orbiter RCS application. A full-scale tank system was fabricated and ground verification testing was conducted. Cleaning, inspection, fill and drain, and one-g expulsion performance were demonstrated. Results show that the fine-mesh screen, compartmented tank system provides the performance, flexibility, reusability, and other characteristics required by the pulsing, high flowrate RCS. It provides the required expulsion under widely differing high-g boost abort and reentry vectors oriented 119 deg apart and during on-orbit operation under omnidirectional low-g conditions.

A tether tension control law for tethered subsatellites deployed along local vertical

A tethered subsatellite deployed along the local vertical is in stable equilibrium. This applies equally to subsatellites deployed in the direction towards the earth from the main spacecraft or away from the earth. Momentary perturbations from this stable equilibrium will result in a swinging motion, which decays very slowly if passive means are relied upon to provide damping. A control law is described which actively damps the swinging motion by employing a reel, or other mechanism, to apply appropriate tension as a function of tetherline length, rate of change of length, and desired length. The same control law is shown to be useful for deployment and retrieval of tethered subsatellites in addition to damping to steady state.

Analysis of surface tension driven flow in floating zone melting

Surface tension driven flow in a cylindrical melt suspended between two rods was investigated by numerical solution of the steady state differential equations for heat and momentum transfer. Radiation heating and electron beam heating were considered approximately. For small values of the driving force, one rotating ring was formed in the top half of the zone, and its mirror image in the bottom half. At larger driving forces, secondary cells form which probably would undergo oscillatory motion. The influence of Prandtl number, zone movement, and buoyancy on the convection was also studied. The primary resistance to mass transfer in the laminar regime was in the center of the zone rather than at the solid-liquid interfaces.

An experimental method to obtain the elastic strain energy function from torsion-tension tests

It is shown that by employing a torsion-tension test, it is possible to have a complete mapping near the origin of the two principal strain invariants associated with the rate of change of the strain energy function. However, the mathematical representation of the twist moment and normal forces vs strain and the strain energy function are complex. This problem is solved by using a set of solid cylindrical bars with different diameters such that the difference in diameter of two successive bars is small. The stress-strain equations can be grossly oversimplified by considering differences in twist moment and normal force as a function of difference in radius.

Apparatus for determining surface tension

System for studying capillary action uses pressure transducer and chart recorder instead of manometer. Apparatus enables measurements to be made under controlled atmospheres. It also may be remotely operated. These features are particularly useful when dealing with noxious liquids and for study of surface tension under high-pressure conditions that require use of all-metal apparatus.

Studies of convection in a solidifying system with surface tension at reduced gravity

The low gravity environment of Earth's orbit is being seriously considered for experimentation on the production of materials in space. Most of such materials processes inevitably involve either the solidification of melt or the melting of solids. Inherent in most fluid mechanisms with temperature gradients is convective motion. A study is presented for the onset of convection in a solidifying system in an environment which is similar to that encountered in space processing. Since the study is for a low gravity condition, the only driving mechanism considered is that due to the variation of surface tension force at the free surface of the melt layer. Two simple solidification models were considered, one in which the solidification process enters in the perturbation system and another in which the melt is solidifying at a constant rate. The results show that the solidification process will bring about convection in the melt earlier than otherwise.

Graphite/polyimide tension tests at elevated and cryogenic temperatures

Interim results for characterizing tension properties of graphite/polyimide laminates are reported. Existing test procedures for resin-matrix composites were evaluated for use through the extreme temperature range indicated above. Of particular concern was the performance of resistance strain gages at the elevated temperatures and tests were carried out to compare their performance against that of a capacitive strain gage. Limited design data are reported for graphite/polyimide laminates which are being produced through the CASTS Project.
