High energy dynamic impact tests were conducted on Solvay APC AS4D/PEKK-FC and Toray TC1225 LMPAEK T700Gthermoplastic composite laminates. The primary objective was to provide data for evaluation of computational composite impact models. Empirical results indicate an approximately 50% increase in penetration threshold velocity and over 100% increase in penetration energy threshold for the TC1225 LMPAEK T700Gcomposite compared to the APC AS4D/PEKK-FC composite. The velocity required to produce NDE-detectable delamination in the TC1225 LMPAEK T700Gcomposite was roughly twice that for the APC AS4D/PEKK-FC composite. Comparison of the normalized energy absorption showed similar results for the APC AS4D/PEKK-FC system compared to a previously studied IM7/8552 composite material. The TC1225 LMPAEK T700Gsystem absorbed approximately twice that of the other two systems when normalized by areal weight.

Mechanical behavior and time temperature strain rate equivalence for acetal, polycarbonate, polyamide, and fluorocarbon
Linearity of mechanical behavior and applicability of yield stress master curve analyzed for various crystalline-type polymers
Method prepares aromatic polyimides with significantly reduced glass-transition temperatures and without accompanying loss of high-level thermo-oxidative stability which has been typical. This has been made possible by use of diamine monomers with specific stereoisomeric features.
Plastic surfaces can be improved physically and optically by treating them with a plasma of boron trifluoride. The trifluoride can be the sole reactant or be part of a mixture also containing an organic monomeric substance such as perfluorobutene-2 or an organosilane. The boron trifluoride-containing coating can also serve as an intermediate coating between the plastic surface and a plasma deposited organic polymer.
The goal for this contract is the development of processes and techniques for molding thermally stable, fire retardant, low smoke emitting polymeric materials. Outlined in this presentation are: (1) the typical molding types; (2) a program schedule; (3) physical properties of molding types with the test methods to be used; (4) general properties of injection molding materials; and (5) preliminary materials selection.
An ion exchange membrane was formed from a solution containing dissolved matrix polymer and a set of monomers which are capable of reacting to form a polyquaternary ion exchange material; for example vinyl pyride and a dihalo hydrocarbon. After casting solution and evaporation of the volatile component's, a relatively strong ion exchange membrane was obtained which is capable of removing anions, such as nitrate or chromate from water. The ion exchange polymer forms an interpenetrating network with the chains of the matrix polymer.
The softening temperature to degradation temperature range of the polymers was about 440 to 650 K. All of the polymers retained small amounts of solvent as indicated by an increase in T(sub g) as the polymers were dried. The flow properties showed that all three polymers had very high apparent viscosities and would require high pressures and/or high temperatures and/or long times to obtain adequate flow in prepregging and molding. Although none was intended for such application, two of the polymers were combined with carbon fibers by solution prepregging. The prepregs were molded into laminates at temperatures and times, the selection of which was guided by the results from the flow measurements. These laminates had room temperature short beam shear strength similar to that of carbon fiber laminates with a thermosetting polyimide matrix. However, the strength had considerable scatter, and given the difficult processing, these polymides probably would not be suitable for continuous fiber composites.
Compositions of polypropylene and ethylene-acrylic acid resins filled with high levels of alumina trihydrate of magnesium hydroxide were examined for smoke generation and impact resistance. Best results were obtained using alumina trihydrate coated with a low modulus elastomer, and ethylene-acrylic acid resin. Addition of polyvinyl alcohol fibers to the filled resin improves impact resistance and causes somewhat of an increase in smoke evolution.
