Eddy-Current Measurement Of Turning Or Curvature

Rotatable conductive plate covers sensing coil to varying degree. Curvature of pipe at remote or otherwise inaccessible location inside pipe measured using relatively simple angular-displacement eddy-current probe. Crawler and sensor assemblies move along inside of pipe on wheels. Conductive plate pivots to follow curvature of pipe, partly covering one of eddy-current coils to degree depending on local curvature on pipe.

Propulsion technology challenges for turn-of-the-century commercial aircraft

This paper highlights the efforts being performed or sponsored by NASA, in cooperation with the U.S. civil aviation industry, to address the propulsion system technological challenges that must be met in order to ensure a viable future for the industry. Both the subsonic and supersonic aeropropulsion programs are considered. Subsonic transport propulsion program elements, including ultra-high-bypass-ratio turbofans with attendant noise reduction efforts, high-efficiency cores, and combustor emissions reductions are discussed in terms of goals, technical issues, and problem solutions. Similarly, the high-speed research propulsion efforts addressing a high-speed commercial transport are reviewed in terms of environmental barrier issues, such as oxides of nitrogen and noise reduction, and the related economic issues.

Does the inner broad-line region dim down when the power turns up?

The temporal correlations of continuum and broad emission-line fluxes from the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5548 as measured during the 1989 monitoring campaign show two related peculiarities: first, some of the crosscorrelations of line and continuum flux appear steeper on the negative time lag side than the continuum autocorrelation itself; then, the autocorrelation of the line flux is sometimes more sharply peaked than the continuum autocorrelation function. These are here interpreted as evidence that conditions in the inner part of the broad-line region are such that some emission lines decrease in intensity as the continuum strengthens.
