The stability of silicon-containing anodes can, in principle, be extended by constraining these electrodes to limited states of lithiation. Partial utilization of the anode lessens the volume changes experienced by silicon particles during cycling, which can mitigate mechanisms of performance degradation. In full-cells, anode utilization can be modulated by adjusting the relative capacities of the negative and positive electrodes - the N/P ratio. Here, we examine how the N/P ratio affects the long-term stability of Si-based full-cells, and investigate how this parameter would impact the cost and energy of realistic Li-ion cells. Here, we show that, for some configurations, cell failure due to rapid anode degradation can only by avoided at higher N/P ratios. The price of this enhanced stability is accelerated impedance rise at the cathode. Surprisingly, when electrode expansion is taken into account, increasing N/P ratio can actually increase the specific energy and energy density of silicon-rich Li-ion cells.

Pyomo is an open-source optimization modeling software that has undergone significant evolution since its inception in 2008. Pyomo has evolved to enhance flexibility, solver integration, and community engagement. Modern collaborative tools for open-source software have facilitated the development of new Pyomo functionality and improved our development process through automated testing and performance-tracking pipelines. However, Pyomo faces challenges typical of research software, including resource limitations and knowledge retention. The Pyomo team’s commitment to better development practices and community engagement reflects a proactive approach to these issues. We describe Pyomo’s development journey, highlighting both successes and failures, in the hopes that other open-source research software packages may benefit from our experiences.

Ruthenium catalysts for water oxidation combining multidentate ligands [2,2':6',2"-terpyridine]-6,6"-dicarboxylato (tda) and 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylato (bda) with apical phosphine ligands have been prepared. Here, these new complexes were fully characterized by standard spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray crystallography analyses, and their redox properties were evaluated by electrochemistry. Specifically, [Ru II (tda)(tris(2-furyl)phosphine) 2 ] displayed two reversible redox waves that were assigned to the Ru II/III and Ru III/IV transitions, respectively. The number of turnovers in Ce IV -driven water oxidation reached 258 for the bda analog, and for the tda analog, early reaction rates were first order in initial catalyst concentration. The effects of adding fractional equivalents of Ce IV were studied using UV–vis spectroscopy. Steric and electronic changes in the axial phosphine ligand can exert their effects on the properties and catalytic activity of the resulting complexes, which may be useful when exploring other chemistry of these complexes.
