Verification and Performance Impact of the New Parallel MCNP6.3 Particle Track Output Capability for Subcritical Multiplication Simulations [Slides]

A separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. This report does not include the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite. After some additional clean-up and finalizing the post-processing and documentation steps, the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite will be released in the next version of our vnvstats repository. We tested the new HDF5 PTRAC feature in MCNP6.3 and found encouraging outcomes. Identical results coming out of the simulation with respect to the legacy PTRAC results. The overall runtime for all simulations is reduced by ~20% with the new HDF5 PTRAC capability. We consider giving the new HDF5 PTRAC features a try and using it for all subcritical multiplication and any other relevant (PTRAC) calculations.

The Simons Observatory: validation of reconstructed power spectra from simulated filtered maps for the small aperture telescope survey

We present a transfer function-based method to estimate angular power spectra from filtered maps for cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys. This is especially relevant for experiments targeting the faint primordial gravitational wave signatures in CMB polarisation at large scales, such as the Simons Observatory (SO) small aperture telescopes. While timestreams can be filtered to mitigate the contamination from low-frequency noise, usual methods that calculate the mode coupling at individual multipoles can be challenging for experiments covering large sky areas or reaching few-arcminute resolution. The method we present here, although approximate, is more practical and faster for larger data volumes. We validate it through the use of simulated observations approximating the first year of SO data, going from half-wave plate-modulated timestreams to maps, and using simulations to estimate the mixing of polarisation modes induced by an example of time-domain filtering. We show its performance through an example null test and with an end-to-end pipeline that performs inference on cosmological parameters, including the tensor-to-scalar ratio r. The performance demonstration uses simulated observations at multiple frequency bands. We find that the method can recover unbiased parameters for our simulated noise levels.

Benchmark calculations of pure neutron matter with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions

Here, we report benchmark calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron matter as a function of the baryon density using three independent many-body methods: Brueckner–Bethe–Goldstone, Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator chain, and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo. Significant technical improvements are implemented in the latter two methods. The calculations are made for two distinct families of realistic coordinate-space nucleon-nucleon potentials fit to scattering data, including the standard Argonne v 18 interaction and two of its simplified versions, and four of the new Norfolk Δ -full chiral effective field theory potentials. Primarily because of the advancements in the auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo, we observe good agreement among the three many-body techniques up to nuclear saturation density—the maximum difference in the energy per particle is within 1.5 MeV for all the potentials we consider. At higher densities, the divergences become more important, and are mainly driven by the Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator calculations. We also study the connection between nucleon-nucleon scattering data and the energy per particle of pure neutron matter. Our results suggest that fitting to higher-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering helps reduce the spread of energies among the models.

An improved method for direct incident solar radiation calculation from hourly solar insolation data in building energy simulation

Solar radiation considerably influences the energy consumption of buildings and the power production of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. Hourly solar insolation (Wh/m 2 ), represented as the amount of solar irradiance collected on the ground during a 1-h period, is the most common solar radiation data available and widely used in weather files applied in building energy modeling programs (BEMPs). Because the solar beam and position vary over time, the use of hourly insolation data as the input might result in errors in the estimation of the direct incident solar radiation on a particular surface. In this study, methods used in BEMPs for direct incident solar radiation calculations are first analyzed, and an improved method adopting a new algorithm for estimating the solar irradiance is proposed. Furthermore, the algorithm assumes that the solar irradiance changes linearly within a 1-h period and can be estimated based on the solar irradiance at the half clock and slope. The collected direct normal solar irradiance data of 2016 from eight solar radiation stations in China were used to demonstrate the proposed method and evaluate its performance by comparing the results with those from three conventional methods used in BEMPs along with the ground truth measurements. In addition, in this study, factors affecting the accuracy of the calculation results are explored. The results of the estimated direct incident solar radiation show that the proposed method achieves the best accuracy, followed by the methods used in DOE-2, EnergyPlus, and DeST. The proposed method guarantees that the hourly direct solar insolation will remain the same and reflects the variation in the direct solar irradiance across a 1-h time frame. The proposed method can be adopted in BEMPs to improve the accuracy of the solar radiation calculation, thereby improving the accuracy of the simulated building performance and the BIPV production.

Predicting Device Parameters for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells from Electronic Structure Calculations to Reproduce Experiment.

Given that improvements to the power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have slowed in recent years, a means to accurately predict the device parameters yielded by trial dyes in silico, without having to synthesize them, would be extremely valuable to speed up the design process. Currently, the best-performing methods of calculating device parameters rely on a set of experimentally determined kinetic coefficients. In practice, it is very difficult to measure these kinetic parameters accurately, limiting the overall accuracy of such predictive methods. This work proposes a model to obtain key parameters such as J(SC), V-OC, and PCE using only the results from density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations, noting that rates of electron-transfer steps are ultimately linked to the electronic structure of the dye center dot center dot center dot TiO2 working electrode. Six organic DSSC dyes from dissimilar chemical classes (L0, L1, L2, WS-2, WS-92, and C281) were chosen to demonstrate the power of this approach. Their a priori known experimentally determined device performance metrics served to validate our predictions. The greatest absolute error in our predicted PCE values was 0.36% relative to the experiment, while the greatest fractional error was 0.042. This indicates that the proposed model offers a dramatic improvement on previous predictive methods for DSSC device parameters, both in accuracy and in consistency. Moreover, such a predictive model has great potential to be applied to other photovoltaic applications, further enabling the design of novel, highly efficient photoactive materials.

Method to determine the electron–ion temperature relaxation rate from test particle distributions

Here a method to calculate the electron–ion energy exchange rate from the forces on and velocities of an ensemble of test particles is described. The essence of the method is that the energy exchange rate is related to the covariance between the distribution of velocities of test particles and the forces acting on them. The energy exchange rate is related to the electron–ion temperature relaxation rate in the limit of a low test particle speed. A proof of concept is conducted with first-principles molecular dynamics simulations.

Chemomechanics in alloy phase stability

We describe a first-principles statistical mechanics method to calculate the free energies of crystalline alloys that depend on temperature, composition, and strain. The approach relies on an extension of the alloy cluster expansion to include an explicit dependence on homogeneous strain in addition to site occupation variables that track the degree of chemical ordering. The method is applied to the Si-Ge binary alloy and is used to calculate free energies that describe phase stability under arbitrary epitaxial constraints. We find that while the incoherent phase diagram (in which coexisting phases are not affected by coherency constraints) hosts a miscibility gap, coherent phase equilibrium predicts ordering and negative enthalpies of mixing. Instead of chemical instability, the chemomechanical free energy exhibits instabilities along directions that couple the composition of the alloy with a volumetric strain order parameter. Furthermore, this has fundamental implications for phase field models of spinodal decomposition as it indicates the importance of gradient energy coefficients that couple gradients in composition with gradients in strain.

Time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory: Background and Pauli kernel approximations

Time-dependent orbital-free density functional theory (DFT) is an efficient method for calculating the dynamic properties of large-scale quantum systems due to the low computational cost compared to standard time-dependent DFT. In this work, we formalize this method by mapping the real system of interacting fermions onto a fictitious system of noninteracting bosons. The dynamic Pauli potential and associated kernel emerge as key ingredients of time-dependent orbital-free DFT. Using the uniform electron gas as a model system, we derive an approximate frequency-dependent Pauli kernel. Pilot calculations suggest that space nonlocality is a key feature for this kernel. Nonlocal terms arise already in the second-order expansion with respect to unitless frequency and reciprocal space variable ($\frac{ω}{qk_F}$ and $\frac{q}{2k_F}$, respectively). Given the encouraging performance of the proposed kernel, we expect it will lead to more accurate orbital-free DFT simulations of nanoscale systems out of equilibrium. Additionally, the proposed path to formulate nonadiabatic Pauli kernels presents several avenues for further improvements which can be exploited in future work to improve the results.

Ultrafast carrier dynamics in multiple quantum well p–i–n photodiodes

Quantum well (QW) structures are widely used in lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers, and modulators, enabling their monolithic integration on the same substrate. As optoelectronic systems evolve to meet the growing bandwidth demands in the terahertz regime, a deep understanding of ultrafast carrier dynamics in QW structures becomes essential. We introduce a comprehensive model to analyze the ultrafast dynamics of interband photo-excited carriers in QW p–i–n structures and to calculate their frequency response. This model characterizes the entire photocarrier transport process, including carrier escape from QWs and movement across heterojunction interfaces. Additionally, we outline theoretical methods for calculating carrier escape times from both QWs and heterojunction interfaces. Using a GaAs/AlGaAs QW p–i–n structure as a case study, we discuss the effects of carrier escape times from QWs and heterojunction interfaces, as well as carrier transit time through the intrinsic region, on the frequency response of QW p–i–n structures.

Applications of “Synchrotron Radiation Workshop” Code

The “Synchrotron Radiation Workshop” (SRW) computer code was started in the group of Insertion Devices of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in 1997. The idea behind it was to combine in one software library electrodynamics methods for calculating electric fields (and derived characteristics) of synchrotron radiation (SR) generated by relativistic electrons moving in magnetic fields of nearly arbitrary configuration with wave-optics methods for simulating propagation of radiation through optical elements of beamlines. Further, the use of this general approach was initially driven by applications in electron beam diagnostics using SR. However, with time it started to be used for more complicated beamlines of synchrotron light sources, and the use of the code for these applications continues to increase, with the new light sources offering brighter and more coherent x ray beams for wide ranges of experiments in different areas of science.

Quantum closures for neutrino moment transport

A computationally efficient method for calculating the transport of neutrino flavor in simulations is to use angular moments of the neutrino one-body reduced density matrix, i.e., “quantum moments.” As with any moment-based radiation transport method, a closure is needed if the infinite tower of moment evolution equations is truncated. We derive a general parametrization of a quantum closure and the limits the parameters must satisfy in order for the closure to be physical. We then derive from multiangle calculations the evolution of the closure parameters in two test cases which we then progressively insert into a moment evolution code and show how the parameters affect the moment results until the full multiangle results are reproduced. This parametrization paves the way to setting prescriptions for genuine quantum closures adapted to neutrino transport in a range of situations.

Ab initio polaritonic potential-energy surfaces for excited-state nanophotonics and polaritonic chemistry

Advances in nanophotonics, quantum optics, and low-dimensional materials have enabled precise control of light–matter interactions down to the nanoscale. Combining concepts from each of these fields, there is now an opportunity to create and manipulate photonic matter via strong coupling of molecules to the electromagnetic field. Toward this goal, here we demonstrate a first principles framework to calculate polaritonic excited-state potential-energy surfaces, transition dipole moments, and transition densities for strongly coupled light–matter systems. In particular, we demonstrate the applicability of our methodology by calculating the polaritonic excited-state manifold of a formaldehyde molecule strongly coupled to an optical cavity. This proof-of-concept calculation shows how strong coupling can be exploited to alter photochemical reaction pathways by influencing avoided crossings with tuning of the cavity frequency and coupling strength. Therefore, by introducing an ab initio method to calculate excited-state potential-energy surfaces, our work opens a new avenue for the field of polaritonic chemistry.

Holographic entanglement from the UV to the IR

In AdS/CFT, observables on the boundary are invariant under renormalization group (RG) flow in the bulk. In this paper, we study holographic entanglement entropy under bulk RG flow and find that it is indeed invariant. We focus on tree-level RG flow, where massive fields in a UV theory are integrated out to give the IR theory. We explicitly show that in several simple examples, holographic entanglement entropy calculated in the UV theory agrees with that calculated in the IR theory. Moreover, we give an argument for this agreement to hold for general tree-level RG flow. Along the way, we generalize the replica method of calculating holographic entanglement entropy to bulk theories that include matter fields with nonzero spin.

Rapid method for computing the mechanical resonances of irregular objects

A solid object's geometry, density, and elastic moduli completely determine its spectrum of normal modes. Solving the inverse problem—determining a material's elastic moduli given a set of resonance frequencies and sample geometry—relies on the ability to compute resonance spectra accurately and efficiently. Established methods for calculating these spectra are either fast but limited to simple geometries, or are applicable to arbitrarily shaped samples at the cost of being prohibitively slow. Here, we describe a method to rapidly compute the normal modes of irregularly shaped objects using entirely open-source software. Our method's accuracy compares favorably with existing methods for simple geometries and shows a significant improvement in speed over existing methods for irregular geometries.

Excited state electronic structure of dimethyl disulfide involved in photodissociation at ∼200 nm

Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), one of the smallest organic molecules with an S–S bond, serves as a model system for understanding photofragmentation in polypeptides and proteins. Prior studies of DMDS photodissociation excited at ∼266 nm and ∼248 nm have elucidated the mechanisms of S–S and C–S bond cleavage, which involve the lowest excited electronic states S 1 and S 2 . Far less is known about the dissociation mechanisms and electronic structure of relevant excited states of DMDS excited at ∼200 nm. Herein we present calculations of the electronic structure and properties of electronic states S 1 –S 6 accessed when DMDS is excited at ∼200 nm. Our analysis includes a comparison of theoretical and experimental UV spectra, as well as theoretically predicted one-dimensional cuts through the singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces along the S–S and C–S bond dissociation coordinates. Finally, we present calculations of spin–orbit coupling constants at the Franck–Condon geometry to assess the likelihood of ultrafast intersystem crossing. We show that choosing an accurate yet computationally efficient electronic structure method for calculating the S 0 –S 6 potential energy surfaces along relevant dissociation coordinates is challenging due to excited states with doubly excited character and/or mixed Rydberg-valence character. Our findings demonstrate that the extended multi-state complete active space second-order perturbation theory (XMS-CASPT2) balances this computational efficiency and accuracy, as it captures both the Rydberg character of states in the Franck–Condon region and multiconfigurational character toward the bond-dissociation limits. In conclusion, we compare the performance of XMS-CASPT2 to a new variant of equation of motion coupled cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple corrections, EOM-CCSD(T)(a)*, finding that EOM-CCSD(T)(a)* significantly improves the treatment of doubly excited states compared to EOM-CCSD, but struggles to quantitatively capture asymptotic energies along bond dissociation coordinates for these states.

SnSe 2 thermal conductivity from optothermal Raman and Stokes/anti-Stokes thermometry

The optothermal Raman method is useful in determining the in-plane thermal conductivity of two-dimensional (2D) materials that are either suspended or supported on a substrate. We compare this method with the Stokes/anti-Stokes scattering thermometry method, which can play a role in both calibration of Raman peak positions as well as extraction of the local phonon temperature. This work demonstrates that the Stokes/anti-Stokes intensity ratio plays an important role in determining the in-plane thermal conductivity of 2D tin diselenide (SnSe 2 ) dry-transferred onto a polished copper (Cu) substrate. The statistically-averaged thermal conductivity of the 108 ± 24 nm-thick SnSe 2 yielded 5.4 ± 3.5 Wm −1 K −1 for the optothermal Raman method, and 2.40 ± 0.81 Wm −1 K −1 for the Stokes/anti-Stokes thermometry method, indicating that the Stokes/anti-Stokes thermometry method to calculate the thermal conductivity of a material can simultaneously increase both precision and accuracy. The uncertainty value was also lowered by a factor of 1.9 from the traditional optothermal Raman method to the Stokes/anti-Stokes thermometry method. The low in-plane thermal conductivity of 2D SnSe 2 , 1.3–2.9 times lower than bulk, is useful for applications in thermal and electrical energy conversion and thermoelectric devices.

Determining Cs-137 Background body burdens for Wild Pigs At Savannah River Site

Savannah River Site (SRS) is a unique U.S. Department of Energy facility in that most of the 310-square miles of land has not be industrialized since operations began in 1953. This has allowed abundant, undisturbed vegetation structure to exists as well as an increase in herd sizes among wildlife populations onsite. Cs-137 is widespread across SRS due to the production of nuclear materials, but is mostly from global atmospheric fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Due to most of SRS being undisturbed land, the concentrations of Cs-137 are higher on site than off site. The SRS began conducting annual deer harvests that were open to the public beginning in 1965. All animals harvested during these hunts are monitored for Cs-137, which is measured using a Sodium Iodide detector. There has been an effective method for calculating the background Cs-137 body burden for the deer population at the SRS, developed by Gaines and Novak using data collected during hunts and gamma overflight data to determine the areas contaminated by site activities. For animals that have a Cs-137 concentration above the established background level, a dose is assigned to the hunter. By applying the same method for wild pigs using data collected from hunts, gamma overflight, and developing a site-specific home range of wild pigs, we were able to calculate the Cs-137 background body burden concentrations of wild pigs on site. Objectives: Develop site-specific home range for wild pigs at SRS; Determine the average concentrations of Cs-137 in wild pigs from background; Use Gaines and Novak method for determining background Cs-137 body burdens wild pigs on SRS. Methods and Materials: Development of site-specific home range of wild pigs was determined to be 2.5 miles using: Four studies conducted between 1969 and 1992 for the SRS wild pig population. (Mayer and Brisbin) The background compartments were determined using: Gamma overflight data showing contaminated areas; Site-specific home range of the wild pigs. Results and Conclusion: All data were generated through the JMP software to provide a histogram and summary statistics. The estimate of an upper tolerance limit for the background contamination with 95% confidence is 1.965 pCi/g for the wild pigs. This means that for wild pigs on SRS from the background compartments are expected to have Cs-137 concentrations of less than 1.965 pCi/g. The current background for the deer is 2.59 pCi/g. For the background compartments Cs-137 concentrations from 2012-2018: Mean: 0.815 pCi/g, Maximum: 2.341 pCi/g, Minimum: -0.704 pCi/g.

What is the gradient of a scalar function defined on a subspace of square matrices?

We illustrate a technique to calculate the gradient of scalar functions that are defined on any arbitrary matrix subspace. It generalizes our earlier work titled “What is the gradient of a scalar function of a symmetric matrix ?”(Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics (2022), https://doi.org/10.1007/s13226-022-00313-x), in which we considered the special case of the subspace of symmetric matrices. Extant methods to calculate the gradient in such cases have an inherent flaw which leads to spurious results that populate several publications, as well as respected textbooks and handbooks on matrix calculus. Here, we examine these sources and results in a rigorous and concrete mathematical setting of a finite-dimensional inner-product space and discover the inherent flaw and also a remedy. We demonstrate two ways to calculate the derivative/gradient and second derivative for scalar functions of matrices defined over an arbitrary matrix subspace; the first method is by considering any (differentiable) extension to the space of square matrices and projection of its gradient onto the given subspace. The second method utilizes an ordered basis and computes each component of the gradient through evaluation of the directional derivative. All the ideas presented are illustrated by non-trivial examples, namely, considering the subspace of 3 x 3 circulant and Toeplitz matrices and presenting the results of gradient-descent with both the spurious and correct gradients. Moreover, our bibliography makes it clear that a rigorous approach to matrix calculus is not common in practice, and our presentation of matrix calculus in the language of inner-product spaces will be significant and meaningful for applied mathematicians, engineers and researchers working in inter-disciplinary fields to avoid the conceptual pitfalls that exist.
