Influence of Thermal Energy Storage Integration Strategy on System Performance and Refrigerant Charge for Small-Scale R290 Heat Pumps

As small-scale (2.5 – 5 kW) heat pumps across the US increase straining the grid during peak hours, integrated heat pump thermal energy storage (HP-TES) systems can assist by load shifting. However, challenges arise when assembling these systems, as direct refrigerant-phase change material (PCM) heat exchangers (HXs) increase refrigerant charge, and indirect secondary loops degrade HP-TES performance. In this work, direct and indirect HP-TES configurations were sized using commercially available HXs to compare the available load shift time and performance at similar refrigerant charges. For the same indirect 5 kW HP-TES refrigerant charge, directly HP-TES can operate up to 72 and 145 minutes in cooling and heating modes, respectively, using small diameter tubes. Using Modelica, COP increases for direct and indirect HP-TES were 22% and 9%, respectively, given the parasitic losses in the indirect HP-TES. Overall, small-scale direct HP-TES can have comparable refrigerant charges with indirect HP-TES maximizing COP improvements.

Joint Planning of EV Fast Charging Stations and Power Distribution Systems With Balanced Traffic Flow Assignment

To tackle the challenges introduced by the fast-growing charging demand of electric vehicles (EVs), the power distribution systems (PDSs) and fast charging stations (FCSs) of EVs should be planned and operated in a more coordinated fashion. However, existing planning approaches generally aim to minimize investment costs in PDSs while ignoring the risk of worsening traffic conditions. To overcome this research gap, this article integrates the interests of traffic networks into PDS and FCS joint planning model to mitigate negative impacts on traffic conditions caused by installing FCSs. First, a novel microscopic method that is different from traditional assignment methods is proposed to simulate the influences of FCSs on traffic flows and EV charging loads. Then, a multiobjective joint planning model is developed to minimize both the planning costs and unbalanced traffic flows. A new bilayer Benders decomposition algorithm is designed to solve the proposed joint planning model. Numerical results on two practical systems in China validate the feasibility of our microscopic method by comparing the simulated results with real data. Compared with existing approaches, it is also demonstrated that the proposed joint planning approach helps to balance traffic flow assignments and relieve traffic congestion.

NASCAP modelling of high-voltage power system interactions with space charged-particle environments

The NASA Charging Analyzer Program (NASCAP), an engineering tool capable of analyzing the impact of the charged particle environment on spacecraft surfaces and systems, is described. NASCAP is a quasi-static computational program which analyzes the charging of a 3-dimensional complex body as a function of time and system-generated voltages for given space environmental conditions. The material properties of the surfaces are taken into account; the surface potentials, low energy sheath, potential distribution in space and particle trajectories are calculated. An application of NASCAP to a simple space solar power station consisting of two 6 m by 18 m solar array wings surrounding a central body is presented. Each solar array wing is considered to be divided into three regions operating at 2000 volts. Results of NASCAP analysis of the system for a normal environment and a moderate geomagnetic substorm environment are discussed.

Model-based Design Optimization to Achieve the Performance Goals (16.0 SEER/9.5 HSPF), Developing Heat Pump by Using Low-GWP Refrigerants and 5 mm Diameter Tubes

Usage of low-GWP refrigerants can reduce the Green House Gas (GHG) emission of HVAC systems. Our research in previous milestone report has shown that using heat exchangers with 5 mm diameter tubes instead of 9 mm diameter tubes is a promising solution to meet the performance goals of heat pump using low-GWP refrigerants. In addition, the 5mm tube heat exchangers can lead to lower system refrigerant charge and as a result, reduce environmental impact further. However, shifting to small tube diameters requires in-depth heat exchanger design optimization to adapt to the transition to low-GWP refrigerants. In the 2nd quarter of FY21, we conducted multi-objective optimizations using Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm on a residential 5-ton air source heat pump to investigate the potential system performance improvements and material savings. 4 low-GWP refrigerants, ARM20A, ARM20B, R454A and R454C are investigated in this study. The objectives of the optimization are to minimize the heat pump material cost and to maximize the system performance simultaneously. As a result, the HXs material cost is reduced by up to 77% according to the copper and aluminum material price in current market. Under heating mode operation, the smart 4-way valve guarantees that the optimal low-GWP systems maintain or outperform the heating performance of the R410A baseline system. The model-based design optimization yields 18.3-18.9 SEER and 10.6-11.9 HSPF for optimal systems using different low-GWP refrigerants. The initial performance goals (16.0 SEER/9.5 HSPF) are achieved. Furthermore, up to 50% system refrigerant charge reduction is possible in the optimized low-GWP heat pump system using ARM20B. And 91%-95% predicted life-time direct CO 2 emission reduction is achieved by using the optimal 5mm tube low-GWP heat pumps. The significant material saving, charge reduction and direct CO 2 emission reduction help in reducing the environmental impacts of heat pump systems. The optimal heat exchangers resulting from this research can fit into the original baseline indoor and outdoor fan-coil unit. This can reduce the retrofitting effort by minimizing the change in manufacturing and installation of the heat pumps and guarantee the compatibility with end-users’ house structure. Finally, the new products can be easily accepted by manufacturers and end-users.

New Secondary Batteries Utilizing Electronically Conductive Polypyrrole Cathode

To gain a better understanding of the dynamic behavior in electronically conducting polypyrroles and to provide guidance toward designs of new secondary batteries based on these polymers, two mathematical models are developed; one for the potentiostatically controlled switching behavior of polypyrrole film, and one for the galvanostatically controlled charge/discharge behavior of lithium/polypyrrole secondary battery cell. The first model is used to predict the profiles of electrolyte concentrations, charge states, and electrochemical potentials within the thin polypyrrole film during switching process as functions of applied potential and position. Thus, the detailed mechanisms of charge transport and electrochemical reaction can be understood. Sensitivity analysis is performed for independent parameters, describing the physical and electrochemical characteristic of polypyrrole film, to verify their influences on the model performance. The values of independent parameters are estimated by comparing model predictions with experimental data obtained from identical conditions. The second model is used to predict the profiles of electrolyte concentrations, charge state, and electrochemical potentials within the battery system during charge and discharge processes as functions of time and position. Energy and power densities are estimated from model predictions and compared with existing battery systems. The independent design criteria on the charge and discharge performance of the cell are provided by studying the effects of design parameters.

Stochastic Constrained Extended System Dynamics for Solving Charge Equilibration Models

In this work, we present a new stochastic extended Lagrangian molecular dynamics solution to charge equilibration that eliminates self-consistent field (SCF) calculations, thus eliminating the computational bottleneck in solving the charge distribution with standard SCF solvers. By formulating both charges and chemical potential as latent variables and introducing a holonomic constraint that satisfies charge conservation, the SC-XLMD method accurately reproduces thermodynamic, dynamic, and structural properties within the framework of ReaxFF for a bulk water system and highly reactive RDX molecules simulated at high temperature. The SC-XLMD method shows excellent computational performance and is available in the publicly available LAMMPS package.

Charge density wave in a band insulator

Charge-density-wave implies a periodic modulation of the charge density. Typically observed in metallic systems, charge-density-wave arise from Fermi surface instabilities, resulting in the total or partial gapping of the Fermi surface. Here, we present experimental evidence for a charge-density wave state emerging in a band insulator which has no Fermi surface. The bulk and surface of our material platform, 𝛂-Bi 4 Br 4 , is gapped over the entire Brillouin zone. Through topographic and spectroscopic imaging at low temperatures, we unveil an unexpected unidirectional charge modulation in 𝛂-Bi 4 Br 4 , breaking the lattice translation symmetry. The charge-density-wave develops at temperatures below 40 K and adds an energy gap atop the existing insulating gap of 𝛂-Bi 4 Br 4 . Furthermore, our transport measurements reveal nonlinear electrical conduction, a phenomenon conventionally associated with the sliding or phason mode of incommensurate charge-density-waves. These unusual observations represent a different type of charge-density-wave

Operating a commercial building HVAC load as a virtual battery through airflow control

Virtual battery (VB) is an innovative method to model flexibility of building loads and effectively coordinate them with other resources at a system level. Unlike a real battery with a dedicated power conversion system for charging control, methods are required for operating building loads to deviate from the baseline to respond to grid signals. This paper presents a VB control for a commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system to follow the desired power consumption in real-time by adjusting zonal airflow rates. The proposed method consists of two parts. At the system level, a mixed feedforward and feedback control is used to estimate the desired total airflow rate. At the zone level, two priority-based algorithms are then proposed to distribute the total airflow rate to individual zones. In particular, a zonal airflow limit estimation method is proposed using machine-learning techniques, in contrast to physics-based thermal models in existing studies, to more accurately capture zonal thermal dynamics and improve temperature control performance. An office building on the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory campus is implemented in EnergyPlus, and used to illustrate and validate the proposed control.

Dispersion of stored energy within a battery system at risk of failure

A method and system for dispersing stored energy in an energy storage system to delay or arrest propagation of thermal runaway and thermally-induced cascading failures. The system includes a plurality of battery sub-assemblies and DC-DC converters connected to a shared DC bus through which energy may be exchanged. The system may be interfaced to an AC power grid or DC power system through an additional power converter. The method of dispersing stored energy uses this system to charge and discharge sub-assemblies such that the system is less susceptible to propagation of thermal runaway. The method determines, based on awareness of current system state, battery types, and electrical and thermal structure, the sequence of charging and discharging actions to best inhibit thermal runaway while preserving the system's ability to perform subsequent energy redistribution.

Molecular-Level Insights into the Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Structure and Dynamics of Neutral and Charged Polyimides

We use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how increasing ionic functionalization influences polyimide (PI) behavior in ionic liquid (IL) solvation environments. Here, we examine three polymer systems with varying charge densities: a neutral polyimide [N−PI] containing imidazole rings and progressively introduce charge through quaternization to create singly [C−PI] + and doubly charged [C−2PI] 2+ variants across a wide range of IL concentration (0−90 wt %). Through comprehensive structural, mechanical, and electrostatic analyses, we reveal that polymer charge density plays a central role in shaping IL organization and interaction with the polymer matrix. At low IL content, charged systems exhibit strong electrostatic complexation, leading to chain compaction, localized ESP environments, and elevated dielectric constants. As IL concentration increases, the effect of the different polymer charge states becomes less significant. Notably, an intermediate composition regime at approximately 50 wt % IL is associated with changes in IL-rich domain connectivity and overall system behavior across all three PI systems.

The role of electrostatic charging of small and intermediate sized bodies in the solar system

The role of electrostatic charging of small and intermediate sized bodies in the solar system is reviewed. These bodies include planetary, interplanetary and cometary dust as well as cometary nuclei (at large heliocentric distances), asteroids and the larger bodies in the Saturnian ring system. While this charging has both physical and dynamical consequences for the small dust grains, it has only physical consequences for the larger bodies. The main physical consequences for the small grains are electrostatic erosion ('chipping') and disruption, whereas for the larger bodies they include electrostatic levitation and blow-off of fine loose dust from their surfaces.

Influence of charging environments on spacecraft materials and system performance

An overview is presented of potential interactions that can occur on spacecraft operating in space environments. These interactions are discussed in detail. The environment acts on spacecraft in such a way that charging of exterior surfaces occurs. The consequences from this charging then affect system operational performance. Hence, it is the coupling of this exterior charging to system performance that is of concern here. These interactions were first discovered in the spacecraft charging phenomena in which the geomagnetic substorms charged external surfaces to a level that discharges occurred. As a result of the discharge, electronic systems either changed logic state (anomalous switching) or failed. These interactions can occur in all orbits. The type associated with geosynchronous orbits is called passive since the environment provides the charging mechanism. This type can also occur in polar orbits due to auroral charging environments. In low Earth orbits, the thermal plasma alleviates charging environment concerns, but system operations can induce similar effects.
