Spin-dependent interactions and heavy-quark transport in the quark-gluon plasma

We extend a previously constructed T-matrix approach to the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) to include the effects of spin-dependent interactions between partons. Following earlier work within the relativistic quark model, the spin-dependent interactions figure as relativistic corrections to the Cornell potential. When applied to the vacuum spectroscopy of quarkonia, in particular their mass splittings in S- and P-wave states, the issue of the Lorentz structure of the confining potential arises. We confirm that a significant admixture of a vector interaction (to the previously assumed scalar interaction) improves the description of the experimental mass splittings. The temperature corrections to the in-medium potential are constrained by results from thermal lattice-QCD for the equation of state (EoS) and heavy-quark (HQ) free energy in a self-consistent set-up for heavy- and light-parton spectral functions in the QGP. We then deploy the refined in-medium heavy-light T-matrix to compute the charm-quark transport coefficients in the QGP. The vector component of the confining potential, through its relativistic corrections, enhances the friction coefficient for charm quarks in the QGP over previous calculations by tens of percent at low momenta and temperatures, and more at higher momenta. Our results are promising for improving the current phenomenology of open heavy-flavor observables at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Structure of open-flavor four-quark states in the charm and bottom region

We present quantitative results for masses and the internal structure of four-quark states with two heavy quarks, i.e., Q Q ′ q ¯ q ¯ ′ with Q , Q ′ ∈ { c , b } and q , q ′ ∈ { u , d , s } , and J P ∈ 1 + . The composition of these states in terms of meson-meson and diquark-antidiquark pairs, extracted from a relativistic four-body Faddeev-Yakubowski equation, is dynamically determined from underlying QCD forces. We find states at energy levels in very good agreement with lattice QCD and, where available, with experimental states. Their internal structure, most notably between the T c c + , T b c and T b b − , show significant and sizeable variations. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

The static energy in 2+1+1-flavor QCD

We report on the status of the analysis of the static energy in $2+1+1$-flavor QCD. The static energy is obtained by measuring Wilson line correlators in Coulomb gauge using the HISQ action, yielding the scales $r_{0}/a$, $r_{1}/a$, $r_{2}/a$, their ratios, and the string tension $\sigma r_{i}^{2}$. We put emphasis on the possible effects due to the dynamical charm-quark by comparing the lattice results to continuum results of the static energy with and without a massive flavor at two-loop accuracy. We employ gauge-field ensembles from the HotQCD and MILC Collaborations.

Lunar Regolith Albedos Using Monte Carlos

The analysis of planetary regoliths for their backscatter albedos produced by cosmic rays (CRs) is important for space exploration and its potential contributions to science investigations in fundamental physics and astrophysics. Albedos affect all such experiments and the personnel that operate them. Groups have analyzed the production rates of various particles and elemental species by planetary surfaces when bombarded with Galactic CR fluxes, both theoretically and by means of various transport codes, some of which have emphasized neutrons. Here we report on the preliminary results of our current Monte Carlo investigation into the production of charged particles, neutrons, and neutrinos by the lunar surface using FLUKA. In contrast to previous work, the effects of charm are now included.

LHCb: Recent Results and Future Plans

In this overview contribution we introduce the most recent results in high-multiplicity $pp$ and heavy ion collisions obtained by the LHCb experiment, detector developments and plans for the future heavy ion program. Some of the highlights include the study of double charm production, nuclear modification of B-hadrons, quarkonia and Z-bosons in pPb and the suppression of prompt X(3872) hadrons in high multiplicity $pp$ events. On the detector side, we bring to attention the preparation for the upcoming Run III in LHC and the fixed target program.

Energy-dependent flavour ratios in neutrino telescopes from charm

Abstract The origin of the observed diffuse neutrino flux is not yet known. Studies of the relative flavour content of the neutrino flux detected at Earth can give information on the production mechanisms at the sources and on flavour mixing, complementary to measurements of the spectral index and normalization. Here we demonstrate the effects of neutrino fluxes with different spectral shapes and different initial flavour compositions dominating at different energies, and we study the sensitivity of future measurements with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Where one kind of flux gives way to another, this shows up as a non-trivial energy dependence in the flavour compositions. We explore this in the context of slow-jet supernovae and magnetar-driven supernovae — two examples of astrophysical sources where charm production may be effective. Using current best-fit neutrino mixing parameters and the projected 2040 IceCube uncertainties, we use event ratios of different event morphologies at IceCube to illustrate the possibilities of distinguishing the energy dependence of neutrino flavour ratios.

Hidden-flavor four-quark states in the charm and bottom region

We discuss the spectrum and the internal composition of ground and excited four-quark states in the charm and bottom energy region. To this end we extend previous calculations within the framework of the relativistic four-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky equation to include quantum numbers with J P C = 0 + + , 0 − + , 1 − − , 1 + − and 1 + + and study their internal composition in terms of heavy-light meson pairs, hadroquarkonia and diquark-antidiquark clusters. We observe similar patterns in the charm and bottom energy region with different compositions of the four-quark states depending on J P C quantum numbers. Most notably, we find that all states with C · P = + 1 are dominated by heavy-light meson contributions, whereas for axial-vector states with J P C = 1 + − including the Z c ( 3900 ) we find a much more complicated picture depending on the flavor content. We systematically compare our results for the spectrum with existing experimental results and provide predictions for future analyses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the branching fractions of D + → K + K − π + π + π − , ϕ π + π + π − , K S 0 K + π + π − π 0 , K S 0 K + η , and K S 0 K + ω decays

Using 20.3 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the branching fractions of three hadronic charm meson decays, D + → ϕ π + π + π − , D + → K S 0 K + π + π − π 0 , and D + → K S 0 K + ω , are measured for the first time to be ( 0.54 ± 0.19 ± 0.02 ) × 10 − 4 , ( 2.51 ± 0.34 ± 0.14 ) × 10 − 4 , and ( 2.02 ± 0.35 ± 0.10 ) × 10 − 4 , respectively. Futhermore, the branching fractions of D + → K + K − π + π + π − and D + → K S 0 K + η are measured with improved precision, yielding values of ( 0.66 ± 0.11 ± 0.03 ) × 10 − 4 and ( 2.27 ± 0.22 ± 0.05 ) × 10 − 4 , respectively. Simulating Charm Quarks in IP-Glasma Initial Stage and Quark-Gluon Plasma: A Hybrid Approach for charm quark phenomenology

We present phenomenological findings on charm quark transport while including its energy loss in both pre-equilibrium and hydrodynamic stages of the evolution. We employed the MARTINI event generator for the production and evolution of heavy quarks in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The sensitivity of the heavy meson nuclear modification factor and flow coeffcient to the early stage of heavy-ion collisions and bulk medium evolution is analyzed for Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV. Our study provides insights into the interaction strength of charm quarks during the early phase and within the quark-gluon plasma.

Baryons and tetraquarks using instanton-induced interactions

We analyze some aspects of the perturbative and nonperturbative interactions in the composition of heavy quarkonia, heavy and light baryons ( c c c and u u u ones), as well as all charm tetraquarks ( c c c ¯ c ¯ ). Using the hyperspherical approximation and effective radial potentials (in six and nine dimensions, respectively) we derive their spectra and wave functions. In all of the cases, we focus on the splittings between the S -shell levels, which are remarkably insensitive to the quark masses, but proportional to the effective interaction potentials. We use the traditional Cornell-like potentials, and the nonperturbative instanton-induced static potentials, from correlators of two, three, and four Wilson lines, and find rather satisfactory description of spectra in all cases. Measurement of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section over the full near-threshold kinematic region

Here, we report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2 GeV up to 11.44 GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi$-proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states.

Electroweak corrections to the Charm-Top-Quark Contribution to ϵ K

We calculate the leading-logarithmic and next-to-leading-logarithmic electroweak corrections to the charm-top-quark contribution to the effective |ΔS| = 2 Lagrangian, relevant for the parameter ϵ K . We find that these corrections lead to a –0.5% shift in the corresponding Wilson coefficient. Moreover, our calculation removes an implicit ambiguity in the standard-model prediction of ϵ K , by fixing the renormalization scheme of the electroweak input parameters.

Charmed hadron production in an improved quark coalescence model

Here, we study the production of charmed hadrons $D^0$ and $Λ^+_c$ in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the charm quark coalescence. Besides taking into consideration changing hadron sizes in a hot dense medium, which results in an enhanced coalescence probability for charm quarks of very low transverse momenta, we also include the collective flow effect on heavier resonances, which leads to a shift of massive charmed resonances to larger transverse momenta. Including the conversion of charm quarks not undergoing coalescence to hadrons by independent fragmentation, we obtain a good description of the measured yield ratio $Λ^+_c/D^0$ as a function of transverse momentum in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV by the STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

NNLO constraints on proton PDFs from the SeaQuest and STAR experiments and other developments in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis

We review progress in the global QCD analysis by the CTEQ-TEA group since the publication of CT18 parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. Specifically, we discuss comparisons of CT18 NNLO predictions with the LHC 13 TeV measurements as well as with the FNAL SeaQuest and BNL STAR data on lepton pair production. The specialized CT18X PDFs approximating saturation effects are compared with the CT18sx PDFs obtained using NLL/NLO small-$x$ resummation. Short summaries are presented for the special CT18 parton distributions with fitted charm and with lattice QCD inputs. A recent comparative analysis of the impact of deuteron nuclear effects on the parton distributions by the CTEQ-JLab and CTEQ-TEA groups is summarized.

Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. Heavy quark transport: a theoretical overview

A brief overview on heavy-quark-QGP interactions is presented in this work. Theories at different momentum scales are summarized, including the flavor hierarchy of jet energy loss at high pT, hadronization and the charmed hadron chemistry at medium to low pT, and the extraction of the heavy-quark-QGP potential at low pT. Additionally, recent theoretical developments on heavy quark theories are discussed, such as multi-scale transport models of heavy quarks, probing initial state effects and cold nuclear matter effects using heavy quarks, as well as extending studies from single heavy flavor hadrons to heavy flavor jets.

Incorporating DD π effects and left-hand cuts in lattice QCD studies of the T cc (3875) +

We generalize the relativistic field-theoretic three-particle finite-volume scattering formalism to describe generic DDπ systems in the charm C = 2 sector. This includes the isospin-0 channel, in which the recently discovered doubly-charmed tetraquark T cc (3875) + is expected to manifest as a pole in the DDπ → DDπ scattering amplitude. The formalism presented here can also be applied to lattice QCD settings in which the D * is bound and, in particular, remains valid below the left-hand cut in DD * scattering, thus resolving an issue in previous analyses of lattice-determined finite-volume energies.

Exploring the Strong Interaction of Three-Body Systems at the LHC

Deuterons are atomic nuclei composed of a neutron and a proton held together by the strong interaction. Unbound ensembles composed of a deuteron and a third nucleon have been investigated in the past using scattering experiments, and they constitute a fundamental reference in nuclear physics to constrain nuclear interactions and the properties of nuclei. In this work, K + -d and p-d femtoscopic correlations measured by the ALICE Collaboration in proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. It is demonstrated that correlations in momentum space between deuterons and kaons or protons allow us to study three-hadron systems at distances comparable with the proton radius. The analysis of the K + -d correlation shows that the relative distances at which deuterons and protons or kaons are produced are around 2 fm. The analysis of the p-d correlation shows that only a full three-body calculation that accounts for the internal structure of the deuteron can explain the data. In particular, the sensitivity of the observable to the short-range part of the interaction is demonstrated. These results indicate that correlations involving light nuclei in pp collisions at the LHC will also provide access to any three-body system in the strange and charm sectors.
