Nonmonotonic crossover in electronic phase separated manganite superlattices driven by the superlattice period

Studying manganite superlattices [(LCMO) 2n / (PCMO) n ] t made of La 0.625 Ca 0.375 MnO 3 (LCMO) and Pr 0.625 Ca 0.375 MnO 3 (PCMO), we found an unexpected behavior varying the period n. At small n, the ensemble is a three-dimensional ferromagnetic metal due to interfacial charge transfer. At large n , the LCMO layers dominate transport. However, rather than a smooth interpolation between these limits a sharp transport and magnetic anomaly is found at an intermediate critical PCMO thickness n*. Magnetic force microscopy reveals that the phase-separation length scale also maximizes at n* where, unexpectedly, it becomes comparable to that of the (La 1-y Pr y ) 0.625 Ca 0.375 MnO 3 (LPCMO) alloy. Finally, we conjecture the phenomenon originates in a disorder-related length scale: Large charge-ordered clusters as in LPCMO can only nucleate when Pr-rich regions reach a critical size related to n*.

Theory of ultrafast photoinduced low-to-high spin crossover in divalent iron systems

Here a theory is developed for the ultrafast low-to-high spin transition in divalent iron. Following the photoinduced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), the 1 A 1 MLCT state decays on a sub-100-fs timescale into the 5 T 2 MLCT using a 3 T 1 MLCT state as intermediary. Damping of nuclear motion is crucial in obtaining a full singlet-to-quintet transition mediated by the spin-orbit interaction. Destructive interference suppresses transitions to metal-centered (MC) states. The relaxation to the MC 5 T 2 is a result of Coulomb scattering with the surroundings.

Crossover behavior in the magnetoresistance of thin flakes of the topological material ZrTe 5

ZrTe 5 is a layered material that exhibits intricate topological effects. Intensive theoretically and experimental efforts have been devoted to try to understand the physics in this materials. In this paper the temperature dependent magneto-transport properties of ZrTe 5 thin flakes are investigated. A characteristic temperature T* is observed in the temperature dependence of three different types of magnetoresistance simultaneously, which are the saturated Hall anomaly, the chiral anomaly and the longitudinal magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the value of T* decreases monotonically from 200K to 160K with increasing thickness of the ZrTe 5 thin flakes from 42nm to 89nm. Temperature induced topological phase transitions are attributed to the cause of such anomaly in the three types of magnetoresistance at T*. Overall, our findings provide a multi-parameter indicator for the emergence of topological phase transition in ZrTe 5 and could be extended to the study of other topological materials. The temperature dependence of the three types of magnetoresistance also shed light on the role of anomalous Hall Effect in the transport properties of ZrTe 5 .

Orbital-induced crossover of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase into Abrikosov-like states.

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state can emerge in superconductors for which the orbital critical field exceeds the Pauli limit. Here, we present angular-resolved specific-heat data of the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor ??-(ET)2Cu(NCS )2 , with a focus on high fields in the regime of the FFLO transition. For an increasing out-of-plane tilt of the applied magnetic field, which leads to an increase of orbital contributions, we found that the nature of the superconducting transition changes from second to first order and that a further transition appears within the high-field superconducting phase. However, the superconducting state above the Pauli limit is stable for field tilt of several degrees. Since any finite perpendicular component of the magnetic field necessarily leads to quantization of the orbital motion, the resulting vortex lattice states compete with the modulated order parameter of the FFLO state leading to complex high-field superconducting phases. By solving the linearized self-consistency equation within weak-coupling BCS theory, we show that our results are clear experimental evidence of an orbital-induced transformation of the FFLO order parameter into Abrikosov-like states of higher Landau levels.

Quantum-to-classical crossover in generalized spin systems: Temperature-dependent spin dynamics of FeI 2

Simulating quantum spin systems at finite temperatures is an open challenge in many-body physics. This work studies the temperature-dependent spin dynamics of a pivotal compound, FeI 2 , to determine if universal quantum effects can be accounted for by a phenomenological renormalization of the dynamical spin structure factor $S$(q, $ω$) measured by inelastic neutron scattering. Renormalization schemes based on the quantum-to-classical correspondence principle are commonly applied at low temperatures to the harmonic oscillators describing normal modes. However, it is not clear how to extend this renormalization to arbitrarily high temperatures. Here we introduce a temperature-dependent normalization of the classical moments, whose magnitude is determined by imposing the quantum sum rule, e.g., $∫$ $dωd$q$S$ ($q, ω$) = $N$ $S$ $S$ ($S$ + 1)for $N$ $S$ dipolar magnetic moments. We show that this simple renormalization scheme significantly improves the agreement between the calculated and measured $S$(q, $ω$) for FeI 2 at all temperatures. In conclusion, due to the coupled dynamics of dipolar and quadrupolar moments in that material, this renormalization procedure is extended to classical theories based on SU(3) coherent states, and by extension, to any SU($N$) coherent state representation of local multipolar moments.

Frustration-mediated crossover from long-range to short-range magnetic ordering in Y 1 – x L u x BaC o 4 O 7

The R⁢BaC⁢o 4⁢ O 7 system is a prototype geometrically frustrated magnet in which kagome planes and triangular layers of Co-O tetrahedra interleave. For R=Y, an antiferromagnetic ground state is realized due to a frustration-breaking trigonal-orthorhombic phase transition. For R = Lu, however, a long-range ordered state has rarely, if ever, been reported despite a similar symmetry-breaking transition, albeit at a significantly lower temperature. To explore this dichotomy, we present a comprehensive magnetic and structural phase diagram for Y 1-x L⁢u x BaC⁢o 4 ⁢O 7 , established through complementary neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. Our results outline the phase evolution of the nuclear structures in response to changes in composition and temperature. Further, the temperature of the trigonal (P⁢31⁢c) to orthorhombic (Pbn⁢2 1 ) transition, T s⁢1 , decreases monotonically with increasing Lu content from 310 K for x = 0.0 to 110 K for x = 1.0. In Lu-rich compositions (0.7 ≤ x ≤ 1.0), first-order structural transitions are observed with coexisting and competing orthorhombic Pbn⁢2 1 and metastable monoclinic Cc phases. For the magnetically ordered Y-rich compositions, T- and x-dependent refinements of the magnetic structure reveal an antiferromagnetic “ribbonlike” arrangement of Co spin pairs in both the triangular and the kagome layers. A gradual suppression of long-range magnetic order is observed with increasing the Lu content, accompanied by the development of short-range magnetic correlations present in all the samples.

Magnetic dipole γ-ray strength functions in the crossover from spherical to deformed neodymium isotopes

We calculate the magnetic dipole $\gamma$-ray strength functions in a chain of even-mass neodymium isotopes $^{144-152}$Nd in the framework of the configuration-interaction (CI) shell model. We infer the strength function by applying the maximum entropy method (MEM) to the exact imaginary-time response function calculated with the shell-model Monte Carlo (SMMC) method. The success of the MEM depends on the choice of a good strength function as a prior distribution. We investigate two choices for the prior strength function: the static path approximation (SPA) and the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). We find that the QRPA is a better approximation at low temperatures (i.e., near the ground state), while the SPA is a better choice at finite temperatures. We identify a low-energy enhancement (LEE) in the MEM deexcitation $M1$ strength functions of the even-mass neodymium isotopes and compare with recent experimental results for the total deexcitation $\gamma$-ray strength functions. The LEE is already seen in the SPA strength function but not in the QRPA strength function, indicating the importance of large-amplitude static fluctuations around the mean field in reproducing the LEE. Our method is currently the only one which can reproduce LEE in heavy open-shell nuclei where conventional CI shell model calculations are prohibited. With the onset of deformation as number of neutrons increases along the chain of neodymium isotopes, we observe that some of the LEE strength transfers to a low-energy excitation, which we interpret as a finite-temperature ``scissors'' mode. Here, we also observe a finite-temperature spin-flip mode.

Two-component dynamics and the liquid-like to gas-like crossover in supercritical water

Molecular-scale dynamics in sub- to super-critical water is studied with inelastic X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations. The obtained longitudinal current correlation spectra can be decomposed into two main components: a low-frequency (LF), gas-like component and a high-frequency (HF) component arising from the O--O stretching mode between hydrogen-bonded molecules, reminiscent of the longitudinal acoustic mode in ambient water. With increasing temperature, the hydrogen-bond network diminishes and the spectral weight shifts from HF to LF, leading to a transition from liquid-like to gas-like dynamics with rapid changes around the Widom line.

Footprints of the QCD Crossover on Cosmological Gravitational Waves at Pulsar Timing Arrays

Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) have reported evidence for a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background at nanohertz frequencies, possibly originating in the early Universe. We show that the spectral shape of the low-frequency (causality) tail of GW signals sourced at temperatures around T ≳ 1 GeV is distinctively affected by confinement of strong interactions (QCD), due to the corresponding sharp decrease in the number of relativistic species, and significantly deviates from ∼ f 3 commonly adopted in the literature. Bayesian analyses in the NANOGrav 15 years and the previous international PTA datasets reveal a significant improvement in the fit with respect to cubic power-law spectra, previously employed for the causality tail. While no conclusion on the nature of the signal can be drawn at the moment, our results show that the inclusion of standard model effects on cosmological GWs can have a decisive impact on model selection.
