New heavenly double copies

The double copy relates scattering amplitudes and classical solutions in Yang-Mills theory, gravity, and related field theories. Previous work has shown that this has an explicit realisation in self-dual YM theory, where the equation of motion can be written in a form that maps directly to Plebański’s heavenly equation for self-dual gravity. The self-dual YM equation involves an area-preserving diffeomorphism algebra, two copies of which appear in the heavenly equation. In this paper, we show that this construction is a special case of a wider family of heavenly-type examples, by (i) performing Moyal deformations, and (ii) replacing the area-preserving diffeomorphisms with a less restricted algebra. As a result, we obtain a double-copy interpretation for hyper-Hermitian manifolds, extending the previously known hyper-Kähler case. We also introduce a double-Moyal deformation of the heavenly equation. The examples where the construction of Lax pairs is possible are manifestly consistent with Ward’s conjecture, and suggest that the classical integrability of the gravity-type theory may be guaranteed in general by the integrability of at least one of two gauge-theory-type single copies.

Aligned fields double copy to Kerr-NUT-(A)dS

We find Abelian gauge fields that double copy to a large class of black hole spacetimes with spherical horizon topology known as the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS family. Using a multi-Kerr-Schild prescription, we extend the previously-known double copy structure for arbitrarily rotating general dimension black holes, to include NUT charges and an arbitrary cosmological constant. In all cases, these single copy gauge fields are ‘aligned fields’, because their nonzero components align with the principal tensor which generates the Killing structure of the spacetime. In five dimensions, we additionally derive the same single-copy field strengths via the Weyl double copy procedure.

Convolutional double copy in (anti) de Sitter space

The double copy is a remarkable relationship between gauge theory and gravity that has been explored in a number of contexts, most notably scattering amplitudes and classical solutions. The convolutional double copy provides a straightforward method to bridge the two theories via a precise map for the fields and symmetries at the linearised level. This method has been thoroughly investigated in flat space, offering a comprehensive dictionary both with and without fixing the gauge degrees of freedom. In this paper, we extend this to curved space with an (anti) de Sitter background metric. We work in the temporal gauge, and employ a modified convolution that involves the Mellin transformation in the time direction. As an example, we show that the point-like charge in gauge theory double copies to the (dS-) Schwarzschild black hole solution.

Neutrinoless double β decay with light sterile neutrinos: the contact terms

We study neutrinoless double-beta decay in extensions of the Standard Model that include n right-handed neutrino singlets, with masses m s below the GeV scale. Generalizing recently developed matching methods, we determine the m s dependence of the short-range nn → pp couplings that appear to leading order in the chiral effective field theory description of neutrinoless double beta decay. We focus on two scenarios, corresponding to the minimal νSM and left-right symmetric models. We illustrate the impact of our new results in the case of the νSM, showing a significant impact on the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life when m s is in the 200–800 MeV range.

Extracting Einstein from the loop-level double-copy

The naive double-copy of (multi) loop amplitudes involving massive matter coupled to gauge theories will generically produce amplitudes in a gravitational theory that contains additional contributions from propagating antisymmetric tensor and dilaton states even at tree-level. We present a graph-based approach that combines the method of maximal cuts with double-copy construction to offer a systematic framework to isolate the pure Einstein-Hilbert gravitational contributions through loop level. Indeed this allows for a bootstrap of pure-gravitational results from the double-copy of massive scalar-QCD. We apply this to construct the novel result of the D-dimensional one-loop five-point QFT integrand relevant in the classical limit to generating observables associated with the radiative effects of massive black-hole scattering via pure Einstein-Hilbert gravity.

Asymptotic Weyl double copy

A characteristic value formulation of the Weyl double copy leads to an asymptotic formulation. We find that the Weyl double copy holds asymptotically in cases where the full solution is algebraically general, using rotating STU supergravity black holes as an example. The asymptotic formulation provides clues regarding the relation between asymptotic symmetries that follows from the double copy. Using the C-metric as an example, we show that a previous interpretation of this gravity solution as a superrotation has a single copy analogue relating the appropriate Liénard-Wiechert potential to a large gauge transformation.

The Newman-Penrose map and the classical double copy

Gauge-gravity duality is arguably our best hope for understanding quantum gravity. Considerable progress has been made in relating scattering amplitudes in certain gravity theories to those in gauge theories — a correspondence dubbed the double copy. Recently, double copies have also been realized in a classical setting, as maps between exact solutions of gauge theories and gravity. We present here a novel map between a certain class of real, exact solutions of Einstein’s equations and self-dual solutions of the flat-space vacuum Maxwell equations. This map, which we call the Newman-Penrose map, is well-defined even for non-vacuum, non-stationary spacetimes, providing a systematic framework for exploring gravity solutions in the context of the double copy that have not been previously studied in this setting. To illustrate this, we present here the Newman- Penrose map for the Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes, and Kinnersley’s photon rocket.

Double Inozemtsev limits of the quantum DELL system

In this letter we study various Inozemtsev-type limits of the quantum double elliptic (DELL) system when both elliptic parameters are sent to zero at different rates, while the coupling constant is sent to infinity, such that a certain combination of the three parameters is kept fixed. We find a regime in which such double Inozemtsev limit of DELL produces the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider (eRS) Hamiltonians albeit in an unconventional normalization. We discuss other double scaling limits and anisotropic scaling of coordinates and momenta. In addition we provide a formal expression for the eigenvalues of the eRS Hamiltonians solely in terms of their eigenfunctions.

Degradation mechanisms and partial shading of glass-backsheet and double-glass photovoltaic modules in three climate zones determined by remote monitoring of time-series current–voltage and power datastreams

Degradation and partial shading impact the long-term reliability and power production of photovoltaic (PV) modules and power plants. Time-series power (P mp ) and current–voltage (I-V) curve datastreams from PV modules enable a remote diagnostic approach to quantify active degradation mechanisms and identify partial shading. We study three to nine years of these datastreams, including 3.6 million P mp I-V curves and 36 million values, from eight PV modules, four each of double-glass and glass-backsheet module architectures, located in three distinctly different Köppen-Geiger climate zones, to determine the module’s performance loss rates (PLR), identify active degradation mechanisms and power loss modes, along with partial shading by local objects. Considering both module architectures, PLR results indicate that the BSh climate zone is the most aggressive for module degradation, while the Alpine ET zone is the mildest climate. PLR of double-glass modules located in BWh and BSh climate zones are different due to the significantly greater uniform current loss (ΔP Isc ) for double-glass modules in BSh, at a 5% significance level. Power loss for four out of five modules located in the BWh and BSh climates are dominated by uniform current degradation. Statistical analysis of multistep I-V curves detects partial shading experienced by three studied modules with details of the shading profile, the shading Poynting vector diagram for the obstacle’s relative position, shading scenarios, and duration. Lastly, this work demonstrates how remote monitoring and diagnosis of P mp & I-V time-series of modules can provide quantitative operations and maintenance insights into system performance, degradation mechanisms, and shading.

Tensor Hypercontraction of Cluster Perturbation Theory: Quartic Scaling Perturbation Series for the Coupled Cluster Singles and Doubles Ground-State Energies

Even though Cluster Perturbation has been shown to be a robust non-iterative alternative to Coupled Cluster Theory, it is still plagued by high order polynomial computational scaling and the storage of higher order tensors. Here we present a proof-of-concept strategy for implementing Cluster Perturbation Theory ground state energy series for the coupled cluster singles and doubles energy with N 4 computational scaling using Tensor Hypercontraction (THC). The reduction in computational scaling by two orders is achieved by decomposing two electron repulsion integrals, doubles amplitudes and multipliers, as well as selected doubles intermediates to Tensor Hypercontraction format. Using the outlined strategy, we showcase that the Tensor Hypercontraction pilot implementations retain numerical accuracy to within 1 kcal/mol relative to corresponding conventional and density fitting implementations and we empirically verify the N 4 scaling.

An Orbital Basis Set for Double Photoionization of Atoms and Molecules

The ab initio theoretical treatment of one-photon double photoionization processes has been limited to atoms and diatomic molecules by the challenges posed by large grid-based representations of the double ionized continuum wave function. To provide a path for extensions to polyatomics, an energy-adapted orbital basis approach is demonstrated that reduces the dimensions of such representations and simultaneously allows larger time steps in time-dependent computational descriptions of double ionization. Additionally, an algorithm that exploits the diagonal nature of the two-electron integrals in the grid basis and dramatically accelerates the transformation between grid and orbital representations is presented. Excellent agreement between the present results and benchmark theoretical calculations is found for H – and Be atoms, as well as the hydrogen molecule, including for the triply differential cross sections that relate the angular distribution and energy sharing of all of the particles in the molecular frame.

Frequency and Time Domain Nuclear-Electronic Orbital Equation-of-Motion Coupled Cluster Methods: Combination Bands and Electronic-Protonic Double Excitations

The accurate description of excited vibronic states is important for modeling a wide range of photoinduced processes. The nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) approach, which treats specified protons on the same level as the electrons, can describe excited electronic-protonic states. Herein the multicomponent equation-of-motion coupled cluster with singles and doubles (NEO-EOM-CCSD) method and its time-domain counterpart, TD-NEO-EOM-CCSD, are developed and implemented. The application of these methods to the HCN molecule highlights their capabilities. These methods predict qualitatively reasonable energies and intensities for a combination band corresponding to simultaneous excitation of two vibrational modes, as well as an overtone. These methods also describe states with double excitation character, such as excited electronic-protonic states corresponding to the simultaneous excitation of an electron and a proton. The ability of the NEO-EOM-CCSD method and its time-dependent counterpart to describe combination bands, overtones, and double excitations will enable a wide range of photochemical applications.

PNA-Assisted DNAzymes to Cleave Double-Stranded DNA for Genetic Engineering with High Sequence Fidelity

DNAzymes have been widely used in many sensing and imaging applications but have rarely been used for genetic 5 engineering since their discovery in 1994, because their substrate scope is mostly limited to single-stranded DNA or RNA, whereas 6 genetic information is stored mostly in double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). To overcome this major limitation, in this paper we report 7 peptide nucleic acid (PNA)-assisted double-stranded DNA nicking by DNAzymes (PANDA) as the first example to expand 8 DNAzyme activity toward dsDNA. We show that PANDA is programmable in efficiently nicking or causing double strand breaks on 9 target dsDNA, which mimics protein nucleases and can act as restriction enzymes in molecular cloning. In addition to being much 10 smaller than protein enzymes, PANDA has a higher sequence fidelity compared with CRISPR/Cas under the condition we tested, 11 demonstrating its potential as a novel alternative tool for genetic engineering and other biochemical applications.

Catalytic 1,3-Proton Transfer in Alkenes Enabled by Fe=NR Bond Cooperativity: A Strategy for p K a -Dictated Regioselective Transposition of C=C Double Bonds

Transition metal catalyzed alkene double bond transposition usually involves metal hydride intermediates. Despite significant advances in the design of catalysts that dictate product selectivity, control over substrate selectivity is less advanced and transition metal catalysts that selectively transpose double bonds in substrates containing multiple 1-alkene functionalities are rare. Herein, we report that the three-coordinate high spin (S = 2) Fe(II) imido complex [Ph 2 B( t BuIm) 2 Fe=NDipp][K(18-C-6)THF 2 ] (1-K(18-C-6)) catalyzes 1,3-proton transfer from 1-alkene substrates to afford 2-alkene transposition products. Mechanistic investigations involving kinetics, competition, and isotope labeling studies, supported by experimentally calibrated DFT computations, strongly support an unusual nonhydridic mechanism for alkene transposition that is enabled by the cooperative action of the iron center and basic imido ligand. As dictated by the pK a of the allylic protons, this catalyst enables the regioselective transposition of C=C double bonds in substrates containing multiple 1-alkenes. The high spin (S = 2) state of the complex allows a wide scope of functional groups to be tolerated, including those that are typical catalyst poisons, such as amines, N-heterocycles, and phosphines. Furthermore, these results demonstrate a new strategy for metal-catalyzed alkene transposition with predictable substrate regioselectivity.

Double sulfur vacancies by lithium tuning enhance CO2 electroreduction to n-propanol

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction can produce valuable products with high energy densities but the process is plagued by poor selectivities and low yields. Propanol represents a challenging product to obtain due to the complicated C 3 forming mechanism that requires both stabilization of *C 2 intermediates and subsequent C 1 –C 2 coupling. Herein, density function theory calculations revealed that double sulfur vacancies formed on hexagonal copper sulfide can feature as efficient electrocatalytic centers for stabilizing both CO* and OCCO* dimer, and further CO–OCCO coupling to form C 3 species, which cannot be realized on CuS with single or no sulfur vacancies. The double sulfur vacancies were then experimentally synthesized by an electrochemical lithium tuning strategy, during which the density of sulfur vacancies was well-tuned by the charge/discharge cycle number. The double sulfur vacancy-rich CuS catalyst exhibited a Faradaic efficiency toward n-propanol of 15.4 ± 1% at -1.05 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in H-cells, and a high partial current density of 9.9 mA cm -2 at -0.85 V in flow-cells, comparable to the best reported electrochemical CO 2 reduction toward n-propanol. Our work suggests an attractive approach to create anion vacancy pairs as catalytic centers for multi-carbon-products.

Visualizing delocalized correlated electronic states in twisted double bilayer graphene

Abstract The discovery of interaction-driven insulating and superconducting phases in moiré van der Waals heterostructures has sparked considerable interest in understanding the novel correlated physics of these systems. While a significant number of studies have focused on twisted bilayer graphene, correlated insulating states and a superconductivity-like transition up to 12 K have been reported in recent transport measurements of twisted double bilayer graphene. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of gate-tunable twisted double bilayer graphene devices. We observe splitting of the van Hove singularity peak by ~20 meV at half-filling of the conduction flat band, with a corresponding reduction of the local density of states at the Fermi level. By mapping the tunneling differential conductance we show that this correlated system exhibits energetically split states that are spatially delocalized throughout the different regions in the moiré unit cell, inconsistent with order originating solely from onsite Coulomb repulsion within strongly-localized orbitals. We have performed self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that suggest exchange-driven spontaneous symmetry breaking in the degenerate conduction flat band is the origin of the observed correlated state. Our results provide new insight into the nature of electron-electron interactions in twisted double bilayer graphene and related moiré systems.

Medial packing and elastic asymmetry stabilize the double-gyroid in block copolymers

Triply-periodic networks are among the most complex and functionally valuable self-assembled morphologies, yet they form in nearly every class of biological and synthetic soft matter building blocks. In contrast to simpler assembly motifs – spheres, cylinders, layers – networks require molecules to occupy variable local environments, confounding attempts to understand their formation. Here, we examine the double-gyroid network phase by using a geometric formulation of the strong stretching theory of block copolymer melts, a prototypical soft self-assembly system. The theory establishes the direct link between molecular packing, assembly thermodynamics and the medial map, a generic measure of the geometric center of complex shapes. We show that “medial packing” is essential for stability of double-gyroid in strongly-segregated melts, reconciling a long-standing contradiction between infinite- and finite-segregation theories. Additionally, we find a previously unrecognized non-monotonic dependence of network stability on the relative entropic elastic stiffness of matrix-forming to tubular-network forming blocks. The composition window of stable double-gyroid widens for both large and small elastic asymmetry, contradicting intuitive notions that packing frustration is localized to the tubular domains. This study demonstrates the utility of optimized medial tessellations for understanding soft-molecular assembly and packing frustration via an approach that is readily generalizable far beyond gyroids in neat block copolymers.

A renewable double plasma mirror for Petawatt-class lasers

Exceptional pulse contrast can be critical for ultraintense laser experiments, particularly when using solid density targets, and their use is becoming widespread. However, current plasma mirror technology is becoming inadequate for the new generation of high repetition rate, high power lasers now available. We describe a novel double plasma mirror configuration based on renewable, free standing, ultrathin liquid crystal films tested at the BELLA Petawatt Laser Center. Although operating at a repetition rate of several shots per minute, this system can be scaled to a high repetition rate exceeding 1 Hz and represents an important step towards enabling sustained, continuous operation of plasma mirrors. We demonstrate an improvement of two to three orders of magnitude in contrast and a total throughput of 80%. We present the first measurements of a beam reflected from a single or double plasma mirror system using a wavefront sensor, showing a well preserved wavefront and spatial mode. Finally, we introduce a model that predicts the total throughput through this double plasma mirror. This is the first model that accurately predicts the peak reflectivity of a plasma mirror when given the laser temporal profile.
