Alternative Processing of High Temperature Hafnium and Zirconium Based Materials

The behavior of refractory hafnium and zirconium based materials are being investigated at NASA Ames as part of ongoing research aimed at developing superior heat resistant materials for aerospace applications. Hafnium and zirconium diboride based materials have shown high temperature capabilities in simulated reentry environments indicating that these materials may successfully operate as reusable oxidation resistant components for leading edge applications. Due to the refractory nature of these materials, processing of fine-grained uniform microstructures poses a number of challenges. To better understand the process-property-microstructure relationship, processing of these materials has been carried out with conventional hot pressing in addition to the novel approach of Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The two processing methods are compared and contrasted in an evaluation of the sintering behavior of high temperature diboride based materials and preliminary physical and mechanical properties are presented.

Microstructure Quantification and Random Forest Regression Models for Li4Ti5O12–Ni Property Prediction

All-solid-state structural lithium-ion batteries are sought to enable all-electric propulsion in next generation aerospace concepts through improved safety and systems level weight savings. In this work, the influence of processing conditions on microstructural evolution was evaluated for anode composites of strain-free Li4Ti5O12 and metallic nickel current collector. Beyond size distributions, this study explored methods of quantifying microstructural features that describe changes in the spatial distribution and coalescence of nickel particles as a function of sample composition and sintering conditions. Processing-microstructure-property relationships were described by microstructure quantifiers including nickel particle count per area, nearest neighbor distance distribution, and edge-to-edge distance distribution. Machine learning methods were applied to compare the relative influence of processing conditions and microstructural features on electrical conductivity and mechanical strength to optimize for simultaneous energy storage and load bearing performance. Insights gained from this work inform future evaluation of alternative energy storage materials and microstructures for multifunctional performance, and generation of microstructural descriptors strengthens modeling across length scales.

High-Speed Edge-Detecting Line Scan Smart Camera

A high-speed edge-detecting line scan smart camera was developed. The camera is designed to operate as a component in a NASA Glenn Research Center developed inlet shock detection system. The inlet shock is detected by projecting a laser sheet through the airflow. The shock within the airflow is the densest part and refracts the laser sheet the most in its vicinity, leaving a dark spot or shadowgraph. These spots show up as a dip or negative peak within the pixel intensity profile of an image of the projected laser sheet. The smart camera acquires and processes in real-time the linear image containing the shock shadowgraph and outputting the shock location. Previously a high-speed camera and personal computer would perform the image capture and processing to determine the shock location. This innovation consists of a linear image sensor, analog signal processing circuit, and a digital circuit that provides a numerical digital output of the shock or negative edge location. The smart camera is capable of capturing and processing linear images at over 1,000 frames per second. The edges are identified as numeric pixel values within the linear array of pixels, and the edge location information can be sent out from the circuit in a variety of ways, such as by using a microcontroller and onboard or external digital interface to include serial data such as RS-232/485, USB, Ethernet, or CAN BUS; parallel digital data; or an analog signal. The smart camera system can be integrated into a small package with a relatively small number of parts, reducing size and increasing reliability over the previous imaging system..

Initial On-Orbit Spatial Resolution Characterization of OrbView-3 Panchromatic Images

Characterization was conducted under the Memorandum of Understanding among Orbital Sciences Corp., ORBIMAGE, Inc., and NASA Applied Sciences Directorate. Acquired five OrbView-3 panchromatic images of the permanent Stennis Space Center edge targets painted on a concrete surface. Each image is available at two processing levels: Georaw and Basic. Georaw is an intermediate image in which individual pixels are aligned by a nominal shift in the along-scan direction to adjust for the staggered layout of the panchromatic detectors along the focal plane array. Georaw images are engineering data and are not delivered to customers. The Basic product includes a cubic interpolation to align the pixels better along the focal plane and to correct for sensor artifacts, such as smile and attitude smoothing. This product retains satellite geometry - no rectification is performed. Processing of the characterized images did not include image sharpening, which is applied by default to OrbView-3 image products delivered by ORBIMAGE to customers. Edge responses were extracted from images of tilted edges in two directions: along-scan and cross-scan. Each edge response was approximated with a superposition of three sigmoidal functions through a nonlinear least-squares curve-fitting. Line Spread Functions (LSF) were derived by differentiation of the analytical approximation. Modulation Transfer Functions (MTF) were obtained after applying the discrete Fourier transform to the LSF.

Thermal barrier coatings for thermal insulation and corrosion resistance in industrial gas turbine engines

Four thermal barrier coatings were subjected to a 500-hour gas turbine engine test. The coatings were two yttria stabilized zirconias, calcium ortho silicate and calcium meta titanate. The calcium silicate coating exhibited significant spalling. Yttria stabilized zirconia and calcium titanate coatings showed little degradation except in blade leading edge areas. Post-test examination showed variations in the coating due to manual application techniques. Improved process control is required if engineering quality coatings are to be developed. The results indicate that some leading edge loss of the coating can be expected near the tip.

The Athena/X-IFU, from Detector Development to Scientific Feasibility Studies via Simulations

The investigation of the physical hot and energetic phenomena in the Universe will further improve our understanding of the assembly of the largest structures and massive halos of galaxies, and of the role of black holes in shaping the Universe as we see it. Spatially resolved X-ray high-resolution spectroscopy will be a crucial tool to achieve these scientific goals. The X-IFU instrument onboard the Athena observatory will provide us with these capabilities through the use of arrays of Transition edge microcalorimeters detectors. These superconducting devices will deliver the required exquisite spectral resolution needed to achieve the core science objectives, such as the characterization of turbulence and bulk motions in the hot gaseous atmospheres of groups and clusters of galaxies in order to unveil the process of large scale structures assembly. I will present the Transition Edge Sensors principle, the status of the instrumental development for the X-IFU instrument, and discuss their performance in view of the scientific objectives of the Athena mission. I will further present the case of a feasibility study and optimisation of the observing strategy for the characterization of the internal dynamics of the intra-cluster medium, through the use of mock simulations of observations with the X-IFU instrument.

Processing Images of Craters for Spacecraft Navigation

A crater-detection algorithm has been conceived to enable automation of what, heretofore, have been manual processes for utilizing images of craters on a celestial body as landmarks for navigating a spacecraft flying near or landing on that body. The images are acquired by an electronic camera aboard the spacecraft, then digitized, then processed by the algorithm, which consists mainly of the following steps: 1. Edges in an image detected and placed in a database. 2. Crater rim edges are selected from the edge database. 3. Edges that belong to the same crater are grouped together. 4. An ellipse is fitted to each group of crater edges. 5. Ellipses are refined directly in the image domain to reduce errors introduced in the detection of edges and fitting of ellipses. 6. The quality of each detected crater is evaluated. It is planned to utilize this algorithm as the basis of a computer program for automated, real-time, onboard processing of crater-image data. Experimental studies have led to the conclusion that this algorithm is capable of a detection rate >93 percent, a false-alarm rate <5 percent, a geometric error <0.5 pixel, and a position error <0.3 pixel.

Public health applications of remote sensing

Remote infrared and multispectral photography were used to identify coastal salt water-fresh water interfaces conducive to encephalitis vector mosquito breeding in Florida, and to determine the environmental conditions that caused an explosive outbreak of anthrax in Louisiana. Multiband photographic inventories were obtained by simultaneously processing three photographic negatives of the same view which record different wavelength portions of the same light. The process enhances differentiation of vegetative communities and sharply delineates edge effects by assigning false colors to differentiate subtle density differences.

The production of ultrathin polyimide films for the solar sail program and Large Space Structures Technology (LSST): A feasibility study

Polyimide membranes of a thickness range from under 0.01 micron m to greater than 1 micron m can be produced at an estimated cost of 50 cents per sq m (plus the cost of the polymer). The polymer of interest is dissolved in a solvent which is solube in water. The polymer or casting solution is allowed to flow down an inclined ramp onto a water surface where a pool of floating polymer develops. The solvent dissolves into the water lowering the surface tension of the water on equently, the contact angle of the polymer pool is very low and the edge of the pool is very thin. The solvent dissolves from this thin region too rapidly to be replenished from the bulk of the pool and a solid polymer film forms. Firm formation is rapid and spontaneous and the film spreads out unaided, many feet from the leading edge of the pool. The driving force for this process is the exothermic solution of the organic solvent from the polymer solution into the water.

The X-ray structure of Centaurus A

The Einstein X-ray observatory imaging detectors have found X-ray emission associated with several components of the nearby radio galaxy Cen A = NGC 5128: (1) the compact nucleus; (2) an X-ray jet pointed toward the NE radio lobes; (3) the middle NE radio lobe; (4) the disk or dust lane; and (5) diffuse emission extending several arcmin around the nucleus. The intensity of the nucleus changed by a factor of seven over six months. The X-ray jet is considered in terms of thermal, inverse Compton, and synchrotron models. The emission of the NE radio lobe is greater than that expected from inverse Compton or synchrotron processes. Two ridges of emission are found along each edge of the dust lane, within several arcmin of the nucleus. The diffuse X-ray component has a luminosity which is too high to be due to bulge population X-ray sources, but which may be produced by main sequence stars under appropriate circumstances.

Aerodynamic design for improved maneuverability by the use of three-dimensional transonic theory

This study has examined the level of transonic maneuver performance that can be achieved by the use of three-dimensional transonic theory. The FLO-27 code of Jameson and Caughey (1977) was used to lower maneuver drag by the reduction of shock strength on the wing upper surface. A design procedure was used to provide a set of guidelines for the iterative application of FLO-27 during the wing design process. The fighter configuration utilized had a leading-edge sweep of 45 deg and an aspect ratio of 3.28. Tests were conducted at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 0.95 and angles of attack from -5 to 18 deg. The accurate prediction of wing shock systems required the inclusion of fuselage effects in the theory. The FLO-27 code gave a reasonable estimate of the experimental wing pressure distributions at transonic maneuver conditions in the region of the wing where the flow was attached. For Mach numbers between 0.60 and 0.95 and lift coefficients near 0.9, a wing designed by the use of FLO-27 showed substantially lower drag than an empirically developed, supercritical maneuver wing and a maneuver wing designed primarily by two-dimensional transonic theory. For some maneuver conditions, the drag of the two-dimensional design was somewhat lower.

Measurement of damping of graphite epoxy materials

The design of an experiment to measure the damping of a cylindrical graphite-epoxy specimen with a three point support and a knife edge support is described as well as equipment used in tests conducted to determine the influence of the support at the two ends of the specimen and to simulate an idealized free-free boundary condition at the two edges. A curve fitting technique is being used to process the frequency response data obtained. Experiments conducted on the thin plate specimen also reveal the influence of the end support condition on the damping ratio of the specimen. The damping ratio values measured for both specimens appear to be strongly influenced by the shape of the specimen and appear to depend on length and fiber orientation as well as the presence of discontinuities such as sharp bends, corners, and notches.

An evaluation of 685 nm fluorescence imagery of coastal waters

To evaluate the possible application of sunlight-illuminated fluorescence at 685 nm for remote sensing of phytoplankton concentrations, an ocean-color scanner is flown on an aircraft. The results of an analysis of the scanner data, obtained from a series of test flights conducted along the Elbe River and its estuary in the North Sea, show that 685 nm fluorescence is a promising remote-sensing method. The observation of a strong correlation between the fluorescence yields and the chlorophyll concentrations determined by the absorption method which uses the reflectance ratio of blue/green channels, is discussed. The two methods are compared and it is shown that the fluorescence method has an edge over the other due to the data-processing algorithm and its applicability for surveying bio-resources in all types of water. Photographs of the chlorophyll patterns are presented.

A coupled dynamic-thermodynamic model of an ice-ocean system in the marginal ice zone

Thermodynamics are incorporated into a coupled ice-ocean model in order to investigate wind-driven ice-ocean processes in the marginal zone. Upswelling at the ice edge which is generated by the difference in the ice-air and air-water surface stresses is found to give rise to a strong entrainment by drawing the pycnocline closer to the surface. Entrainment is shown to be negligible outside the areas affected by the ice edge upswelling. If cooling at the top is included in the model, the heat and salt exchanges are further enhanced in the upswelling areas. It is noted that new ice formation occurs in the region not affected by ice edge upswelling, and it is suggested that the high-salinity mixed layer regions (with a scale of a few Rossby radii of deformation) will overturn due to cooling, possibly contributing to the formation of deep water.
