Thermal radiation heat transfer (3rd revised and enlarged edition)

This book first reviews the overall aspects and background information related to thermal radiation heat transfer and incorporates new general information, advances in analytical and computational techniques, and new reference material. Coverage focuses on radiation from opaque surfaces, radiation interchange between various types of surfaces enclosing a vacuum or transparent medium, and radiation including the effects of partially transmitting media, such as combustion gases, soot, or windows. Boundary conditions and multiple layers are discussed with information on radiation in materials with nonunity refractive indices.

A catalog of chromospherically active binary stars (second edition)

The catalog contains 206 spectroscopic binary systems with at least one late-type component that shows Ca II H and K emission in its spectrum. These systems include the classical RS CVn binaries and BY Dra binaries. The catalog summarizes information on the photometric, spectroscopic, orbital, and physical properties of the systems as well as space motions and positions. Up to 42 'parameters' for each stellar system are listed followed by the appropriate reference to direct interested colleagues to the original papers. A comprehensive selection of further information for each star is given in the individual notes. In addition, the catalog contains a candidate list of 138 stars that have similar characteristics but are not definitely known binaries or have not had Ca II H and K emission observed.

Graphical timeline editing

NASA's Experiment Scheduling Program (ESP), which has been used for approximately 12 Spacelab missions, is being enhanced with the addition of a Graphical Timeline Editor. The GTE Clipboard, as it is called, was developed to demonstrate new technology which will lead the development of International Space Station Alpha's Payload Planning System and support the remaining Spacelab missions. ESP's GTE Clipboard is developed in C using MIT's X Windows System X11R5 and follows OSF/Motif Style Guide Revision 1.2.

Development and Implementation of Software for Visualizing and Editing Multidimensional Flight Simulation Input Data

In a real-time or batch mode simulation that is designed to model aircraft dynamics over a wide range of flight conditions, a table look- up scheme is implemented to determine the forces and moments on the vehicle based upon the values of parameters such as angle of attack, altitude, Mach number, and control surface deflections. Simulation Aerodynamic Variable Interface (SAVI) is a graphical user interface to the flight simulation input data, designed to operate on workstations that support X Windows. The purpose of the application is to provide two and three dimensional visualization of the data, to allow an intuitive sense of the data set. SAVI also allows the user to manipulate the data, either to conduct an interactive study of the influence of changes on the vehicle dynamics, or to make revisions to data set based on new information such as flight test. This paper discusses the reasons for developing the application, provides an overview of its capabilities, and outlines the software architecture and operating environment.

Issues in NASA Program and Project Management. Special Edition: A Collection of Papers on NASA Procedures and Guidance 7120.5A

A key aspect of NASA's new Strategic Management System is improving the way we plan, approve, execute and evaluate our programs and projects. To this end, NASA has developed the NASA Program and Project Management processes and Requirements-NASA Procedures and Guidelines (NPG) 7120.5A, which formally documents the "Provide Aerospace Products and Capabilities" crosscutting process, and defines the processes and requirements that are responsive to the Program/Project Management-NPD 7120.4A. The Program/Project Management-NPD 7120.4A, issued November 14, 1996, provides the policy for managing programs and projects in a new way that is aligned with the new NASA environment. An Agencywide team has spent thousands of hours developing the NASA Program and Project Management Processes and Requirements-NPG 7120.5A. We have created significant flexibility, authority and discretion for the program and project managers to exercise and carry out their duties, and have delegated the responsibility and the accountability for their programs and projects.

Exploring the Extreme Universe! (2nd Edition)

A large array of web sites devoted to the science that the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics (LHEA) studies have been frozen in time and included on this CD. Featured are five of our 'Understanding the Extreme Universe' sites, which offer explanations about cosmic ray, gamma ray, and X-ray science and satellites, as well as cosmic distances. They also include images and engaging activities that are great for helping both children and adults to learn more about science and basic physical principles. The 'Missions That Take Us There' section contains web sites on the satellite, balloon-borne, International Space Station, and rocket missions in our Laboratory that study X-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays. There are also two multi-mission sites and an experiment that measures Earth's UV light in preparation for a future cosmic ray mission. Most of the sites on this CD contain high-resolution images that are great for scientific presentations, study, or just your own enjoyment. This CD shows our web sites as they existed in April of 2001. We have made sure to include the WWW address for every site, so you will know where to go to access the most current versions of them.

TIES for Dummies 3rd Edition (Technology Identification, Evaluation, and Selection) Basic how to's to implement the TIES method

The TIES method is a forecasting environment whereby the decision-maker has the ability to easily assess and trade-off the impact of various technologies without sophisticated and time-consuming mathematical formulations. TIES provides a methodical approach where technically feasible alternatives can be identified with accuracy and speed to reduce design cycle time, and subsequently, life cycle costs, and was achieved through the use of various probabilistic methods, such as Response Surface Methodology and Monte Carlo Simulations. Furthermore, structured and systematic techniques are utilized from other fields to identify possible concepts and evaluation criteria by which comparisons can be made. This objective is achieved by employing the use of Morphological Matrices and Multi-Attribute Decision Making techniques. Through the execution of each step, a family of design alternatives for a given set of customer requirements can be identified and assessed subjectively or objectively. This methodology allows for more information (knowledge) to be brought into the earlier phases of the design process and will have direct implications on the affordability of the system. The increased knowledge allows for optimum allocation of company resources and quantitative justification for program decisions. Finally, the TIES method provided novel results and quantitative justification to facilitate decision making in the early stages of design so as to produce affordable and quality products.

American X-Vehicles: An Inventory X-1 to X-50 Centennial of Flight Edition

For a while, it seemed the series of experimental aircraft sponsored by the U. S. government had run its course. Between the late 1940s and the late 1970s, almost thirty designations had been allocated to aircraft meant to explore new flight regimes or untried technologies. Then, largely, it ended. But there was a resurgence in the mid- to late- 1990s, and as we enter the fourth year of the new millennia, the designations are up to x-50. Many have a misconception that X-vehicles have always explored the high-speed and high-altitude flight regimes - something popularized by Chuck Yeager in the original X-1 and the exploits of the twelve men that flew the X-15. Although these flight regimes have always been in the spotlight, many others have been explored by X-vehicles. The little Bensen X-25 never exceeded 85 mph, and others were limited to speeds of several hundred mph. There has been some criticism that the use of X designations has been corrupted somewhat by including what are essentially prototypes of future operational aircraft, especially the two JSF demonstrators. But this is not new-the X-11 and X-12 from the 1950s were going to be prototypes of the Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile, and the still-born Lockheed X-27 was always intended as a prototype of a production aircraft. So although this practice does not represent the best use of 'X' designations, it is not without precedent.
