Gravity duals for defect quivers in the Veneziano limit

We construct gravity duals to supersymmetric gauge theories in the presence of unquenched flavor hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group living on the (1+1)-dimensional defect. This configuration is given by the intersection of two sets of D3-branes. Working in the Veneziano limit with large number of colors and flavors we are able to find a closed set of equations describing the dual geometry. We briefly discuss the corresponding solutions for massless flavors as well as in the small flavor limit of massive hypermultiplets. Interestingly, the $\frac{1}{16}$-BPS supergravity solutions, preserving two Poincaré supercharges, are generically only asymptotically anti de-Sitter and the dilaton does not vary with the holographic radial coordinate. This implies that the classical Type IIB supergravity solutions remain trustworthy descriptions for the gauge theories from the deep IR to the far UV.

Frozen generalized symmetries

M-theory frozen singularities are (locally) D - or E -type orbifold singularities with a background fractional C 3 -monodromy surrounding them. In this paper, we revisit such backgrounds and address several puzzling features of their physics. We first give a top-down derivation of how the D - or E -type 7D N = 1 gauge theory directly “freezes” to a lower-rank gauge theory due to the C 3 background. This relies on a Hanany-Witten effect of fractional M5 branes and the presence of a gauge anomaly of fractional D p probes in the circle reduction. Additionally, we compute defect groups and 8D symmetry topological field theories of the 7D frozen theories in several duality frames. We apply our results to understanding the evenness condition of strings ending on O 7 + planes, and calculating the global forms of supergravity gauge groups of M-theory compactified on T 4 / Γ with frozen singularities. We also revisit IIA A D E singularities with a C 1 -monodromy along a 1-cycle in the boundary lens space and show that this freezes the gauge degrees of freedom via confinement. Engineering an effective three-spin Hamiltonian in trapped-ion systems for applications in quantum simulation

Trapped-ion quantum simulators, in analog and digital modes, are considered a primary candidate to achieve quantum advantage in quantum simulation and quantum computation. The underlying controlled ion–laser interactions induce all-to-all two-spin interactions via the collective modes of motion through Cirac–Zoller or Mølmer–Sørensen schemes, leading to effective two-spin Hamiltonians, as well as two-qubit entangling gates. In this work, the Mølmer–Sørensen scheme is extended to induce three-spin interactions via tailored first- and second-order spin–motion couplings. The scheme enables engineering single-, two-, and three-spin interactions, and can be tuned via an enhanced protocol to simulate purely three-spin dynamics. Analytical results for the effective evolution are presented, along with detailed numerical simulations of the full dynamics to support the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed scheme for near-term applications. With a focus on quantum simulation, the advantage of a direct analog implementation of three-spin dynamics is demonstrated via the example of matter-gauge interactions in the U(1) lattice gauge theory within the quantum link model. The mapping of degrees of freedom and strategies for scaling the three-spin scheme to larger systems, are detailed, along with a discussion of the expected outcome of the simulation of the quantum link model given realistic fidelities in the upcoming experiments. The applications of the three-spin scheme go beyond the lattice gauge theory example studied here and include studies of static and dynamical phase diagrams of strongly interacting condensed-matter systems modeled by two- and three-spin Hamiltonians.

Nonperturbative Topological Phenomena in QCD and Related Theories

Here, this book introduces a variety of aspects in nonperturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), focusing on the topological objects present in gauge theories. These objects, like magnetic monopoles, instantons, instanton-dyons, sphalerons, QCD flux tubes, etc, are first introduced individually and, later, treated collectively. As ensembles, they produce various phenomena that can be modeled numerically in lattice gauge theories and such collective effects, produced on the lattice, are extensively discussed in some chapters. In turn, the notion of duality, which is crucial in modern field/string theories, is elucidated by taking into consideration the electric-magnetic duality, the Poisson duality, and the AdS/CFT duality. This monograph is based on various lectures given by Edward Shuryak at Stony Brook during the last three decades and it is meant for advanced graduate students and young researchers in theoretical and mathematical physics who are willing to consolidate their knowledge in the topological phenomena encountered in fundamental QCD research.

Interacting chiral form field theories and $$ T\overline{T} $$-like flows in six and higher dimensions

Abstract In this paper we initiate the study of six-dimensional non-linear chiral two-form gauge theories as deformations of free chiral two-form gauge theories driven by stress-tensor$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows. To lay the background for this study, we elaborate on the relationship between different Lagrangian formulations of duality-invariantp-form theories and corresponding$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows in various dimensions. To this end we propose a new formulation which (i) is a generalization of the four-dimensional construction by Ivanov, Nurmagambetov and Zupnik (INZ) and (ii) turns into the PST formulation upon integrating out an auxiliary self-dual field. We elucidate space-time covariant properties of the PST formulation by clarifying and making use of its relation to the INZ-type formulation and to a so-called “clone” construction.

On the planar limit of 3d $$ {\mathrm{T}}_{\rho}^{\sigma}\left[\mathrm{SU}\left(\mathrm{N}\right)\right] $$

A bstract We discuss a limit of 3d $$ {T}_{\rho}^{\sigma}\left[\mathrm{SU}(N)\right] $$ T ρ σ SU N quiver gauge theories in which the number of nodes is large and the ranks scale quadratically with the length of the quiver. The sphere free energies and topologically twisted indices are obtained using supersymmetric localization. Both scale quartically with the length of the quiver and quadratically with N , with trilogarithm functions depending on the quiver data as coefficients. The IR SCFTs have well-behaved supergravity duals in Type IIB, and the free energies match precisely with holographic results. Previously discussed theories with N 2 ln N scaling arise as limiting cases. Each balanced 3d quiver theory is linked to a 5d parent, whose matrix model is related and dominated by the same saddle point, leading to close relations between BPS observables.

Convolutional double copy in (anti) de Sitter space

The double copy is a remarkable relationship between gauge theory and gravity that has been explored in a number of contexts, most notably scattering amplitudes and classical solutions. The convolutional double copy provides a straightforward method to bridge the two theories via a precise map for the fields and symmetries at the linearised level. This method has been thoroughly investigated in flat space, offering a comprehensive dictionary both with and without fixing the gauge degrees of freedom. In this paper, we extend this to curved space with an (anti) de Sitter background metric. We work in the temporal gauge, and employ a modified convolution that involves the Mellin transformation in the time direction. As an example, we show that the point-like charge in gauge theory double copies to the (dS-) Schwarzschild black hole solution.

Orbit averaging coherent states: holographic three-point functions of AdS giant gravitons

We study correlation functions of two AdS giant gravitons in AdS 5 × S 5 and a BPS supergravity mode using holography. In the gauge theory these are described by BPS correlators of Schur polynomials of fully-symmetric representations and a single trace operator. We find full agreement between the semiclassical gravity and gauge theory computations at large N, for both diagonal and off-diagonal structure constants. Our analysis in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM provides a simpler derivation to the results in the literature, and it can be readily generalized to operators describing bound states of AdS giant gravitons as well as bubbling geometries.

Microscopic entropy of rotating electrically charged AdS 4 black holes from field theory localization

We employ supersymmetric localization to determine the exact partition function of 3d N = 2 gauge theories on a background given by a round S 2 fibered over a circle and certain complexified background fields. The Coulomb branch localization locus includes monopole configurations, and the partition function reduces to a matrix model. We consider the partition function of the ABJM theory on this background as an explicit case. We verify that the large-N limit of the ABJM theory partition function produces, in the Cardy limit, the entropy function of the dual rotating, electrically charged asymptotically AdS 4 supersymmetric black holes and thus provides a microscopic explanation for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Hidden symmetry in the double copy

We show that the Killing tensor of the Kerr spacetime has an analogue in the $\sqrt{Kerr}$ gauge theory solution related to it by the classical double copy. This hidden symmetry of $\sqrt{Kerr}$ leads to an additional constant of motion for color-charged point particles moving in it, implying integrability of the equation of motion. These are the gauge theory counterparts to the Carter constant and the integrability of the geodesic equation in a Kerr background.

Qubit Regularization of Quantum Field Theories

To study quantum field theories on a quantum computer, we must begin with Hamiltonians defined on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and then take appropriate limits. This approach can be seen as a new type of regularization for quantum field theories, which we refer to as qubit regularization. A related finite-dimensional regularization, known as the D-theory approach, was proposed long ago as a general framework for all quantum field theories. In this framework, the dimensionality of the local Hilbert space at each spatial point can increase as needed through an additional flavor index. To reproduce asymptotically free QFTs, most studies assume that qubit-regularized theories require extending the local Hilbert space to infinity. However, contrary to this common belief, recent discoveries in (1+1) dimensions have revealed two examples where asymptotic freedom appears to emerge within a strictly finite-dimensional local Hilbert space through a novel renormalization group (RG) flow. These findings motivate further investigation into whether asymptotically free gauge theories could also emerge within a strictly finite-dimensional local Hilbert space. To support these explorations, we propose an orthonormal basis called the monomer-dimer-tensor-network (MDTN) basis and use it to construct new types of qubit-regularized lattice gauge theories.

Phase transitions at unusual values of θ

We calculate the θ dependence in a cousin of QCD, where the vacuum structure can be analyzed exactly. The theory is $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 SU(2) gauge theory with N F = 0, 1, 2, 3 flavors of fundamentals, explicitly broken to $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 via an adjoint superpotential, and coupled to anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB). The hierarchy m AMSB ≪ μ 𝒩=1 ≪ Λ ensures the validity of our IR analysis. As expected from ordinary QCD, the vacuum energy is a function of θ which undergoes 1st order phase transitions between different vacua where the various dyons condense. For N F = 0 we find the expected phase transition at θ = π, while for N F = 1, 2, 3 we find phase transitions at fractional values of π.

Entanglement and the double copy

We construct entangled states of gluons that scatter exactly as if they were gravitons. Operationally, these objects implement the double copy at the level of the wave function. Our analysis begins with a general ansatz for a wave function characterizing gluons in two copies of SU(N ) gauge theory. Given relatively minimal assumptions following from permutation invariance and dimensional analysis, the three- and four-particle wave functions generate scattering amplitudes that automatically coincide exactly with gravity, modulo normalization. For five-particle scattering the match is not automatic but imposing certain known selection rules on the amplitude is sufficient to uniquely reproduce gravity. The resulting amplitudes exhibit a color-dressed and permutation-invariant form of the usual double copy relations. We compute the entanglement entropy between the two gauge theory copies and learn that these states are maximally-entangled at large N. Moreover, this approach extends immediately to effective field theories, where Born-Infeld photons and Galileons can be similarly recast as entangled gluons and pions.

Quantum error thresholds for gauge-redundant digitizations of lattice field theories

In the quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories, gauge symmetry can be either fixed or encoded as a redundancy of the Hilbert space. While gauge-fixing reduces the number of qubits, keeping the gauge redundancy can provide code space to mitigate and correct quantum errors by checking and restoring Gauss’s law. In this work, we consider the correctable errors for generic finite gauge groups and design the quantum circuits to detect and correct them. We calculate the error thresholds below which the gauge-redundant digitization with Gauss’s law error correction has better fidelity than the gauge-fixed digitization involving only gauge-invariant states. Our results provide guidance for fault-tolerant quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the proton spin structure at long distances

Measuring the spin structure of protons and neutrons tests our understanding of how they arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. At long distances, the coupling constant of the strong interaction becomes large, requiring non-perturbative methods to calculate quantum chromodynamics processes, such as lattice gauge theory or effective field theories. In this work, we report proton spin structure measurements from scattering a polarized electron beam off polarized protons. The spin-dependent cross-sections were measured at large distances, corresponding to the region of low momentum transfer squared between 0.012 and 1.0GeV 2 . This kinematic range provides unique tests of chiral effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive, and call for further theoretical works, for example, in lattice quantum chromodynamics. Finally, our data extrapolated to the photon point agree with the Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory that relates the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton to its integrated spin-dependent cross-sections.

Abelian combinatorial gauge symmetry

Combinatorial gauge symmetry is a principle that allows us to construct lattice gauge theories with two key and distinguishing properties: a) only one- and two-body interactions are needed; and b) the symmetry is exact rather than emergent in an effective or perturbative limit. The ground state exhibits topological order for a range of parameters. This paper is a generalization of the construction to any finite Abelian group. In addition to the general mathematical construction, we present a physical implementation in superconducting wire arrays, which offers a route to the experimental realization of lattice gauge theories with static Hamiltonians.

Soft particles and infinite-dimensional geometry

Abstract In the sigma model, soft insertions of moduli scalars enact parallel transport ofS-matrix elements about the finite-dimensional moduli space of vacua, and the antisymmetric double-soft theorem calculates the curvature of the vacuum manifold. We explore the analogs of these statements in gauge theory and gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes, where the relevant moduli spaces are infinite-dimensional. These models have spaces of vacua parameterized by (trivial) flat connections on the celestial sphere, and soft insertions of photons, gluons, and gravitons parallel transportS-matrix elements about these infinite-dimensional manifolds. We argue that the antisymmetric double-soft gluon theorem ind + 2 bulk dimensions computes the curvature of a connection on the infinite-dimensional space Map ( S d , G ) / G , whereGis the global part of the gauge group. The analogous metrics in abelian gauge theory and gravity are flat, as indicated by the vanishing of the antisymmetric double-soft theorems in those models. In other words, Feynman diagram calculations not only know about the vacuum manifold of Yang–Mills theory, they can also be used to compute its curvature. The results have interesting implications for flat space holography.
