Design, durability and low cost processing technology for composite fan exit guide vanes

A lightweight composite fan exit guide vane for high bypass ratio gas turbine engine application was investigated. Eight candidate material/design combinations were evaluated by NASTRAN finite element analyses. A total of four combinations were selected for further analytical evaluation, part fabrication by two ventors, and fatigue test in dry and wet condition. A core and shell vane design was chosen in which the unidirectional graphite core fiber was the same for all candidates. The shell material, fiber orientation, and ply configuration were varied. Material tests were performed on raw material and composite specimens to establish specification requirements. Pre-test and post-test microstructural examination and nondestructive analyses were conducted to determine the effect of material variations on fatigue durability and failure mode. Relevant data were acquired with respect to design analysis, materials properties, inspection standards, improved durability, weight benefits, and part price of the composite fan exit guide vane.

Application of composite materials to turbofan engine fan exit guide vanes

A program was conducted by NASA with the JT9D engine manufacturer to develop a lightweight, cost effective, composite material fan exit guide vane design having satisfactory structural durability for commerical engine use. Based on the results of a previous company supported program, eight graphite/epoxy and graphite-glass/epoxy guide vane designs were evaluated and four were selected for fabrication and testing. Two commercial fabricators each fabricated 13 vanes. Fatigue tests were used to qualify the selected design configurations under nominally dry, 38 C (100 F) and fully wet and 60 C (140 F) environmental conditions. Cost estimates for a production rate of 1000 vanes per month ranged from 1.7 to 2.6 times the cost of an all aluminum vane. This cost is 50 to 80 percent less than the initial program target cost ratio which was 3 times the cost of an aluminum vane. Application to the JT9D commercial engine is projected to provide a weight savings of 236 N (53 lb) per engine.

Plenum response to simulated disturbances of the model and fan inlet guide vanes in a transonic tunnel

In order to aid in the design of the National Transonic Facility (NTF) control system, test section/plenum response studies were carried out in a 0.186 scale model of the NTF high speed duct. Two types of disturbances, those induced by the model and those induced by the compressor inlet guide vanes were simulated. Some observations with regard to the test section/plenum response tests are summarized as follows. A resonance frequency for the test section/plenum area of the tunnel of approximately 50 Hz was observed for Mach numbers from 0.40 to 0.90. However, since the plenum is 3.1 times (based on volume) too large for the scaled size of the test section, care must be taken in extrapolating these data to NTF conditions. The plenum pressure data indicate the existence of pressure gradients in the plenum. The test results indicate that the difference between test section static pressure and plenum pressure is dependent on test section flow conditions. Plenum response to inlet guide vane type disturbances appears to be slower than plenum response to test section disturbances.

Guiding center plasma with gravitational or gradient drifts

It is noted that since its introduction in 1971, the subject of the statistical dynamics of the electrostatic guiding center plasma model has received considerable theoretical attention. The paper presents the theory and a simulation for the two-dimensional electrostatic guiding center plasma in a uniform gravitational field. Finally, it is shown that the gravitational field leads to large electrostatic energies at long wavelengths and associated vortex motion in the plasma.

Electron microprobe mineral analysis guide

Electron microprobe mineral analysis guide is a compilation of X-ray tables and spectra recorded from various mineral matrices. Spectra were obtained using electron microprobe, equipped with LiF geared, curved crystal X-ray spectrometers, utilizing typical analytical operating conditions: 15 Kv acceleration potential, 0.02 microampere sample current as measured on a clinopyroxene standard (CP19). Tables and spectra are presented for the majority of elements, fluorine through uranium, occurring in mineral samples from lunar, meteoritic and terrestrial sources. Tables for each element contain relevant analytical information, i.e., analyzing crystal, X-ray peak, background and relative intensity information, X-ray interferences and a section containing notes on the measurement. Originally intended to cover silicates and oxide minerals the tables and spectra have been expanded to cover other mineral phases. Electron microprobe mineral analysis guide is intended as a spectral base to which additional spectra can be added as the analyst encounters new mineral matrices.

Guide star probabilities

Probabilities are calculated for acquiring suitable guide stars (GS) with the fine guidance system (FGS) of the space telescope. A number of the considerations and techniques described are also relevant for other space astronomy missions. The constraints of the FGS are reviewed. The available data on bright star densities are summarized and a previous error in the literature is corrected. Separate analytic and Monte Carlo calculations of the probabilities are described. A simulation of space telescope pointing is carried out using the Weistrop north galactic pole catalog of bright stars. Sufficient information is presented so that the probabilities of acquisition can be estimated as a function of position in the sky. The probability of acquiring suitable guide stars is greatly increased if the FGS can allow an appreciable difference between the (bright) primary GS limiting magnitude and the (fainter) secondary GS limiting magnitude.

Design, durability and low cost processing technology for composite fan exit guide vanes

A program was conducted to design, fabricate and test a durable, low cost, lightweight composite fan exit guide vane for high bypass ratio gas turbine engine application. Eight candidate material/design combinations were evaluated by NASTRAN finite element analysis. Four of these candidate systems were selected for composite vane fabrication by two vendors. A core and shell vane design was chosen in which the unidirectional graphite core fiber was the same for all candidates. The shell material, fiber orientation and ply configuration were varied. Material tests were performed on raw material and composite specimens to establish specification requirements. Composite vanes were nondestructively inspected and subsequently fatigue tested in both dry and 'wet' conditions. The program provided relevant data with respect to design analysis, materials properties, inspection standards, improved durability, weight benefits and part price of the composite fan exit guide vane.

Propagation of magnetically guided acoustic shocks in the solar chromosphere

The propagation of a train of acoustic shocks guided by diverging magnetic fields through a static model of the solar chromospheric network and transition region is investigated. For initial flux densities of 1,000,000 ergs/sq cm/sec in the lower chromosphere, the local efficiency of acoustic transmission into the corona can be much higher than that calculated for a plane parallel atmosphere. Acoustic energy will tend to be deposited at higher chromospheric levels in diverging magnetic fields, and magnetic guiding may influence the temperature profile of the network and plages. The total flux that can be transmitted into the corona along such diverging fields is severely limited since the magnetic elements occupy a small fractional area of the photosphere and the transmission efficiency is a rapidly decreasing function of initial flux density. Diverging magnetic fields and a varying ratio of specific heats are not likely to allow high frequency shocks to dissipate high enough in a static atmosphere to contribute significantly to the coronal energy balance.

Waves guided by a thin viscoelastic layer between elastic solids

The propagation of ultrasonic waves guided along a viscoelastic layer which separates two dissimilar elastic solid half spaces is described. For the limiting cases of rigid and soft bonding by a layer thin compared to acoustic wavelength, Stoneley and independent Rayleigh wave characteristic equations, respectively, result. For combinations of layer rigidity and wave length that correspond to guided wave propagation, external cyclic loading of the layer produces mechanical hysteresis and a resulting dynamic change in bond properties. Measurements of velocity hysteresis in an aluminum polymer adhesive aluminum system are described.

Historical development of worldwide guided missiles

The development of missiles from early history to present time is put in perspective. The influence of World War II in accelerating the development of guided missiles, particularly through German scientists, is discussed. The dispersion of German scientists to other countries and the coupling of their work with native talent to develop guide missiles is traced. Particular emphasis is placed on the evolution of the missile in the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Since the Soviets possess what is probably the world's most complete array of dedicated missile system types, their known inventory is reviewed. Some philosophical observations of missile design trends and missile purposes are made as related to the interests of various countries.

Design and performance of a fixed, nonaccelerating, guide vane cascade that operates over an inlet flow angle range of 60 deg

A unique set of wind tunnel guide vanes are designed with an inverse design code and analyzed with a panel method and an integral boundary layer code developed at the NASA Lewis Research Center. The fixed guide vanes, 80 feet long with 6-foot chord length, were designed for the NASA Ames 40 x 80/80 x 120 ft Wind Tunnel. Low subsonic flow is accepted over a 60 deg range of inlet angle from either the 40 x 80 leg or the 80 x 120 leg of the wind tunnel, and directed axially into the main leg of the tunnel where drive fans are located. Experimental tests of 1/10-scale models were conducted to verify design calculations.
