Universal signatures of Dirac fermions in entanglement and charge fluctuations

We study the entanglement entropy (EE) and charge fluctuations in models where the low-energy physics is governed by massless Dirac fermions. We focus on the response to flux insertion which, for the EE, is widely assumed to be universal, i.e., independent of the microscopic details. We provide an analytical derivation of the EE and charge fluctuations for the seminal example of graphene, using the dimensional reduction of its tight-binding model to the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Our asymptotic expression for the EE matches the conformal field theory prediction. We show that the charge variance has the same asymptotic behavior, up to a constant prefactor. To check the validity of universality arguments, we numerically consider several models, with different geometries and numbers of Dirac cones, and either for strictly two-dimensional models or for a gapless surface mode of three-dimensional topological insulators. We also show that the flux response does not depend on the entangling surface geometry as long as it encloses the flux. Finally we consider the universal corner contributions to the EE. We show that in the presence of corners, the Kitaev-Preskill subtraction scheme provides nonuniversal, geometry-dependent results.

Optical magnons with dominant bond-directional exchange interactions in the honeycomb lattice iridate α — Li 2 IrO 3

We have used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to reveal optical magnons in a honeycomb lattice iridate α - Li 2 IrO 3 . The spectrum in the energy region 20–25 meV exhibits momentum dependence, of which energy is highest at the location of the magnetic Bragg peak, ( h , k ) = ( ± 0.32 , 0 ) , and lowered toward ( 0 , 0 ) and ( ± 1 , 0 ) . We compare our data with a linear spin-wave theory based on a generic nearest-neighbor spin model. We find that a dominant bond-directional Kitaev interaction of order 20 meV is required to explain the energy scale observed in our study. The observed excitations are understood as stemming from optical magnon modes whose intensity is modulated by a structure factor, resulting in the apparent momentum dependence. We also observed diffuse magnetic scattering arising from the short-range magnetic correlation well above T N . In contrast to Na 2 IrO 3 , this diffuse scattering lacks the C 3 rotational symmetry of the honeycomb lattice, suggesting that the bond anisotropy is far from negligible in α - Li 2 IrO 3 .

Dirac fast scramblers

In this work, we introduce a family of Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models with a large number of fermion and boson flavors as higher dimensional generalizations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The models may be derived from local lattice couplings and give rise to Lorentz invariant critical solutions in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. These solutions imply anomalous dimensions of both bosons and fermions tuned by the number ratio of boson to fermion flavors. In 1+1 dimension the solution represents a stable critical phase, while in 2+1 dimension it governs a quantum phase transition. We compute the out of time order correlators in the 1+1 dimensional model, showing that it exhibits growth with the maximal Lyapunov exponent λ L =2πT in the low temperature limit.

Complex pressure-temperature structural phase diagram of the honeycomb iridate Cu 2 IrO 3

Cu 2 IrO 3 is among the newest layered honeycomb iridates and a promising candidate to harbor a Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. Here, we investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of its structure through a combination of powder x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure measurements, as well as ab initio evolutionary structure search. At ambient pressure, we revise the previously proposed C2/c solution with a related but notably more stable P2 1 /c structure. Pressures below 8 GPa drive the formation of Ir-Ir dimers at both ambient and low temperatures, similar to the case of Li 2 IrO 3 . At higher pressures, the structural evolution dramatically depends on temperature. Furthermore, a large discontinuous reduction of the Ir honeycomb interplanar distance is observed around 15 GPa at room temperature, likely driven by a collapse of the O-Cu-O dumbbell bonds. At 15 K, pressures beyond 20 GPa first lead to an intermediate phase featuring a continuous reduction of the interplanar distance, which then collapses at 30 GPa across yet another phase transition. However, the resulting structure around 40 GPa is not the same at room and low temperatures. Remarkably, the reduction in interplanar distance leads to an apparent healing of the stacking faults at room temperature, but not at 15 K. Possible implications on the evolution of electronic structure of Cu 2 IrO 3 with pressure are discussed.

Theoretical study of the crystal and electronic properties of α - RuI 3

The material α-RuCl 3 , with a two-dimensional Ru honeycomb sublattice, has attracted considerable attention because it may be a realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Recently, a new honeycomb material, α-RuCl 3 , was prepared under moderately high pressure, and it is stable under ambient conditions. However, different from α-RuCl 3 , α-RuI 3 was reported to be a paramagnetic metal without long-range magnetic order down to 0.35 K. Here, the structural and electronic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional α-RuI 3 are theoretically studied. First, based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, the ABC stacking honeycomb-layer R$\bar{3}$ (No. 148) structure is found to be the most likely stacking order for α-RuI 3 along the c axis. Furthermore, both R$\bar{3}$ and P$\bar{3}$1c are dynamically stable because no imaginary frequency modes were obtained in the phononic dispersion spectrum without Hubbard U. Moreover, the different physical behavior of α-RuI 3 compared to α-RuCl 3 can be understood naturally. The strong hybridization between Ru 4d and I 5p orbitals decreases the “effective” atomic Hubbard repulsion, leading the electrons of RuI3 to be less localized than in RuCl 3 . As a consequence, the effective electronic correlation is reduced from Cl to I, leading to the metallic nature of α-RuI 3 . Based on the DFT+U (Ueff=2 eV) plus spin-orbital coupling, we obtained a spin-orbit Mott insulating behavior for α-RuCl 3 and, with the same procedure, a metallic behavior for α-RuI 3 , in good agreement with experimental results. Furthermore, when introducing large (unrealistic) U eff =6 eV, the spin-orbit Mott gap opens in α-RuI 3 as well, supporting the physical picture we are proposing. Our results provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on two-dimensional transition metal tri-iodide layered materials.

Spin liquid to spin glass crossover in the random quantum Heisenberg magnet

We study quantum SU($M$) spins with all-to-all and random Heisenberg exchange interactions of root-mean-square strength $J$. The $M \rightarrow \infty$ model has a spin liquid ground state with the spinons obeying the equations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Numerical studies of the SU(2) model with $S=1/2$ spins show spin glass order in the ground state, but also display SYK spin liquid behavior in the intermediate frequency spin spectrum. We employ a $1/M$ expansion to describe the crossover from fractionalized fermionic spinons to a confining spin glass state with weak spin glass order $q_{EA}$. The SYK spin liquid behavior persists down to a frequency $\omega_\ast \sim J q_{EA}$, and for $\omega < \omega_\ast$, the spectral density is linear in $\omega$, thus quenching the extensive zero temperature entropy of the spin liquid. Furthermore, the linear $\omega$ spectrum is qualitatively similar to that obtained earlier using bosonic spinons for large $q_{EA}$. We argue that the extensive SYK spin liquid entropy is transformed as $T \rightarrow 0$ to an extensive complexity of the spin glass state.

Single-ion properties of the transverse-field Ising model material CoNb 2 O 6

We report CoNb 2 O 6 is one of the few materials that is known to approximate the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1D-TFIM) near its quantum critical point. It has been inferred that Co 2+ acts as a pseudospin 1/2 with anisotropic exchange interactions that are largely Ising-like, enabling the realization of the TFIM. However, the behavior of CoNb 2 O 6 is known to diverge from the ideal TFIM under transverse magnetic fields that are far from the quantum critical point, requiring the consideration of additional anisotropic, bond-dependent (Kitaev-like) terms in the microscopic pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian. These terms are expected to be controlled in part by single-ion physics, namely the wave function for the pseudospin-1/2 angular momentum doublet. Here, we present the results of both inelastic neutron scattering measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy on CoNb 2 O 6 , which elucidate the single-ion physics of Co 2+ in CoNb 2 O 6 for the first time. We find that the system is well-described by an intermediate spin-orbit coupled Hamiltonian, and the ground state is a well-isolated Kramers doublet with an anisotropic g tensor. We provide the approximate wave functions for this doublet, which we expect will be useful in theoretical investigations of the anisotropic exchange interactions.

Inverse Faraday effect in Mott insulators

The inverse Faraday effect (IFE), where a static magnetization is induced by circularly polarized light, offers a promising route to ultrafast control of spin states. Here we study the IFE in Mott insulators using the Floquet theory. We find two distinct IFE behavior governed by the inversion symmetry. In the Mott insulators with inversion symmetry, we find that the effective magnetic field induced by the IFE couples ferromagnetically to the neighboring spins. While for the Mott insulators without inversion symmetry, the effective magnetic field due to IFE couples antiferromagnetically to the neighboring spins. We apply the theory to the spin-orbit coupled single- and multiorbital Hubbard model that is relevant for the Kitaev quantum spin liquid material and demonstrate that the magnetic interactions can be tuned by light.

Supercurrent-induced topological phase transitions

We show that finite current in superconductors can induce topological phase transitions, as a result of the deformation of the quasiparticle spectrum by a finite center-of-mass (COM) momentum of the Cooper pairs. To show the wide applicability of this mechanism, we examine the topological properties of three prototypical systems: the Kitaev chain, s-wave superconductors, and d-wave superconductors. Here we introduce a finite COM momentum as an external field corresponding to the supercurrent and show that all the models exhibit current-induced topological phase transitions. We also discuss the possibility of observing the phase transitions in experiments and the relation to the other finite COM momentum pairing states.

Electronic structure of α - RuCl 3 by fixed-node and fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo methods

Layered material α-RuCl 3 has caught wide attention due to its possible realization of Kitaev's spin liquid and its electronic structure that involves the interplay of electron-electron correlations and spin-orbit effects. Several DFT+U studies have suggested that both electron-electron correlations and spin-orbit effects are crucial for accurately describing the band gap. This work studies the importance of these two effects using fixed-node and fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo calculations both in spin-averaged and explicit spin-orbit formalisms. In the latter, the Slater-Jastrow trial function is constructed from two-component spin orbitals using our recent quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) developments and thoroughly tested effective core potentials. Our results show that the gap in the ideal crystal is already accurately described by the spin-averaged case, with the dominant role being played by the magnetic ground state with significant exchange and electron correlation effects. We find qualitative agreement between hybrid DFT, DFT+U, and QMC. In addition, QMC results agree very well with available experiments, and we identify the values of exact Fock exchange mixing that provide comparable gaps. Explicit spin-orbit QMC calculations reveal that the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the gap is minor, of the order of 0.2 eV, which corresponds to the strength of the spin orbit of the Ru atom.

Chemical tuning of a honeycomb magnet through a critical point

BaCo 2⁢ (AsO 4 )⁢ 2 (BCAO) has seen extensive study since its initial identification as a proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate. Thought to be described by the highly anisotropic XXZ-J 1 -J 3 model, the ease with which magnetic order is suppressed in the system indicates proximity to a spin liquid phase. Upon chemical tuning via partial arsenic substitution with vanadium, we show an initial suppression of long-range incommensurate order in the BCAO system to T ≈ 3.0 K, followed by increased spin freezing at higher substitution levels. Between these two regions, at around 10% substitution, the system is shown to pass through a critical point where the competing J 1 /J 3 exchange interactions become more balanced, producing a more complex magnetic ground state, likely stabilized by quantum fluctuations. Here, this state shows how slight compositional change in magnetically frustrated systems may be leveraged to tune ground state degeneracies and potentially realize a quantum spin liquid state.

Experimental evidence for nonspherical magnetic form factor in Ru 3 +

The Mott insulator ..alpha..-RuCl3 has generated great interest in the community due to its possible field-induced Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. Despite enormous effort spent trying to obtain the form of the low-energy Hamiltonian, there is currently no agreed upon set of parameters which is able to explain all of the data. A key piece of missing information lies in the determination of the magnetic form factor of Ru3+, particularly for a true quantitative treatment of inelastic neutron scattering data. Here we present the experimentally derived magnetic form factor of Ru3+ in the low spin 4d5 state using polarized neutron diffraction within the paramagnetic regime on high-quality single crystals of ..alpha..-RuCl3. We observe strong evidence of an anisotropic form factor, expected of the spin-orbit coupled jeff=12 ground state. We model the static magnetization density in increasing complexity from simple isotropic cases, to a multipolar expansion, and, finally, ab initio calculations of the generalized jeff=12 ground state. Comparison of both single ion models and inclusion of Cl- anions support the presence of hybridization of Ru3+ with the surrounding Cl- ligands.

Effects of Na deficiency on spin dynamics in the Mott insulating Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8

Here, we report on Raman scattering and 23 Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations of j eff = 1/2 hyperkagome antiferromagnet Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8 , which lies in the Mott insulating state. Our Raman scattering experiments unveil remarkable parallels between the magnetic excitations of the pristine Na 4 Ir 3 O 8 and the Kitaev honeycomb material Na 2 IrO 3 , which are characterized by dominant fractional spinon excitations. In the case of moderate Na-deficient Na 4−x Ir 3 O 8 , however, a substantial suppression of the magnetic excitations is observed, alluding to the notable influence of charge fluctuations on spin dynamics. In addition, our site-specific 23 Na NMR measurements offer further insights into the spin dynamics when a minor concentration of holes is introduced into a spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator. Specifically, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/ T 1 reveals the emergence of pseudogaplike correlations at the Na(2) site, alongside a critical slowing down behavior at the Na(1) and Na(3) sites. These findings showcase the intricate interplay between itinerant holes and magnetic correlations in a spin-liquid-like background.

Disorder-induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

Here, we study a periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or nonexistence of edge modes at zero and π quasienergy. When potential disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana π mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy π, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both π and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization, (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight-binding chain, and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Magnetic structure and Ising-like antiferromagnetism in the bilayer triangular lattice compound NdZnPO

Here, the complex interplay of spin frustration and quantum fluctuations in low-dimensional quantum materials leads to a variety of intriguing phenomena. This research focuses on a detailed analysis of the magnetic behavior exhibited by NdZnPO, a bilayer spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. The investigation employs magnetization, specific heat, and powder neutron scattering measurements. At zero field, a long-range magnetic order is observed at T N = 1.64 K. Powder neutron diffraction experiments show the Ising-like magnetic moments along the c-axis, revealing a stripe like magnetic structure with magnetic propagation vector (1/2, 0, 1/2). Application of a magnetic field along the c-axis suppresses the antiferromagnetic order, leading to a fully polarized ferromagnetic state above B c = 4.5 T. This transition is accompanied by notable enhancements in the nuclear Schottky contribution. Moreover, the absence of spin frustration and expected field-induced plateau-like phases are remarkable observations. Detailed calculations of magnetic dipolar interactions revealed complex couplings reminiscent of a honeycomb lattice, suggesting the potential emergence of Kitaev-like physics within this system. This comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of NdZnPO highlights unresolved intricacies, underscoring the imperative for further exploration to unveil the underlying governing mechanisms.

Breakdown of order fractionalization in the CPT model

Here, we present an analysis of the half-filled CPT model, an analytically tractable Kondo lattice model with Yao-Lee spin-spin interactions on a 3D hyperoctagon lattice, proposed by Coleman, Panigrahi, and Tsvelik. Previous studies have established that the CPT model exhibits odd-frequency triplet superconductivity and order fractionalization. Through asymptotic analyses in the small- and large- Kondo coupling limits, we identify a quantum critical point at , marking a transition from a superconductor to a Kondo insulator. By estimating the vison gap energy to account for thermal gauge fluctuations, we determine the energy scales governing the thermal breakdown of order fractionalization. Moreover, at large the Kondo insulator undergoes orbital decoupling, leading to the formation of a decoupled Kitaev orbital liquid. These findings and analogies with the -gauged model lead us to propose a tentative phase diagram for the CPT model at half-filling.

Electronic structure of the honeycomb iridate Cu 2 ⁢IrO 3 at high pressure

Cu 2 IrO 3 has attracted recent interest due to its proximity to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state and the complex structural response observed at high pressures. We use x-ray spectroscopy and scattering as well as electrical transport techniques to unveil the electronic structure of Cu 2 IrO 3 at ambient and high pressures. Despite featuring a Ir 4+ J eff = 1/2 state at ambient pressure, Ir L 3 -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering reveals broadened electronic excitations that point to the importance of Ir 5d-Cu 3d interaction. High pressure first drives an Ir-Ir dimer state with collapsed < L · S > and < L z >/< S z >, signaling the formation of 5d molecular orbitals. A novel Cu → Ir charge transfer is observed above 30 GPa at low temperatures, leading to an approximate Ir 3+ and Cu 1.5+ valence, with persistent insulating electrical transport seemingly driven by charge segregation of Cu 1+ /Cu 2+ ions into distinct sites. Concomitant x-ray spectroscopy and diffraction measurements through different thermodynamic paths demonstrate a strong electron-lattice coupling, with J eff = 1/2 and Ir 3+ /Cu 1.5+ electronic states occurring only in phases 1 and 5, respectively. Remarkably, the charge-transfer state can only be reached if Cu 2 IrO 3 is pressurized at low temperature, suggesting that phonons play an important role in the inhibiting this phase. Furthermore, these results point to the choice of thermodynamic path across interplanar collapse transition as a key parameter to access novel states in intercalated iridates.

Gapless Floquet topology

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in insulators and superconductors are known for their robust edge modes, linked to bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. While this principle traditionally applies to gapped phases, recent advances have extended it to gapless systems, where topological edge-states persist even in the absence of a bulk gap. We extend this framework to periodically driven chains with chiral symmetry, revealing the existence of topological edge zero and π modes despite the lack of bulk gaps in the quasienergy spectrum. By examining the half-period decomposition of chiral evolutions, we construct topological invariants that circumvent the need to define the Floquet Hamiltonian, making them more suitable for generalization to the gapless regime. We provide explicit examples, including generalizations of the Kitaev chain and related spin models, where localized π modes emerge even when the bulk is gapless at the same quasienergy as the edge modes. Here, we numerically study the effect of interactions, which give a finite lifetime to the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit with the decay rate consistent with Fermi's golden rule.
