Laser-velocimeter surveys of merging vortices in a wind tunnel: Complete data and analysis

The merger of two corotating vortices was studied with a laser velocimeter designed to measure the two cross-stream components of velocity. Measurements were made at several downstream distances in the vortex wake shed by two semispan wings mounted on the wind-tunnel walls. The velocity data provided wall-defined contours of crossflow velocity, stream function, and vorticity for a variety of test conditions. Downstream of the merger point, the vorticity was found to be independent of the downstream distance for radii smaller than r/b = 0.05. For larger radii, the vorticity depended on the distance from the wing. Upstream of the merger, a multicell vorticity pattern was found.

Laser-velocimeter surveys of merging vortices in a wind tunnel

The merger of two vortices was studied with a laser velocimeter designed to measure the two cross-stream components of velocity. Measurements were made at several downstream distances in the vortex wake shed by two semispan wings mounted on the wind tunnel walls. The velocity data provided well difined contours of cross-flow velocity, stream function and vorticity. Downstream of the merger point the vorticity was shown to be independent of the downstream distance for small radii, and at larger radii was dependent on the distance from the wing rather than from the merger point. Upstream of the merger point a multicell vorticity pattern was shown.

The role of O-type neutral lines in magnetic merging during substorms and solar flares

A model has been constructed for the magnetic field configuration of a combination of X- and O-type neutral lines in the middle of the geomagnetic tail. The main feature is a bubble centered on the O-type line, the field lines of which are not connected to the main geomagnetic field. An analytical model of the motion of charged particles in the vicinity of an O-type neutral line, with an electric field aligned parallel to it, has been constructed and analyzed. Finally it is found that two distinct mechanisms of particle acceleration may exist if a substorm is powered by the inductive emf generated when the tail's magnetic field returns to a more dipolelike configuration by flowing through a pair of X- and O-type neutral lines.

Exploration for fractured petroleum reservoirs using radar/Landsat merge combinations

Since fractures are commonly propagated upward and reflected at the earth's surface as subtle linears, detection of these surface features is extremely important in many phases of petroleum exploration and development. To document the usefulness of microwave analysis for petroleum exploration, the Arkansas part of the Arkoma basin is selected as a prime test site. The research plan involves comparing the aircraft microwave imagery and Landsat imagery in an area where significant subsurface borehole geophysical data are available. In the northern Arkoma basin, a positive correlation between the number of linears in a given area and production from cherty carbonate strata is found. In the southern part of the basin, little relationship is discernible between surface structure and gas production, and no correlation is found between gas productivity and linear proximity or linear density as determined from remote sensor data.

The relationship of total Birkeland currents to the merging electric field

Magsat data were used to examine the behavior of Birkeland currents during 1100-2000 UT in consecutive orbits passing near the dawn-dusk meridian. The field was measured with a three-axis fluxgate instrument with a resolution of within 0.5 nT, with the sampling occurring every 1/16th sec. A total of 32 crossings of the Northern Hemisphere auroral zone were available for analysis. The changes in the magnetic readings were correlated more closely with variation in the IMF parameters than to the latitudinal width of the changes. Evidence was found for a relationship between the reconnection electric field and the intensity of the large-scale Birkeland current system. The total conductance of the auroral zone was calculated to be about 18.7 mhos.

Collisions and merging of disk galaxies

The stable disks required as initial states for an experiment are produced by embedding the disk (which is visible) in a halo (invisible). The disk is a luminous tracer that represents only 1 percent of the total mass of the system. The stability of the initial state of the model is confirmed experimentally. Collisions with various combinations of initial orbital energy and angular momentum and of disk orientations are investigated. Two initially parabolic cases with different impact parameters are followed in time until the interactions lead to a merger. The interpenetration of the two galaxies gives rise to a contraction and subsequent disruption of the entire system. A variety of responses is found for the visible disks, ranging from stretched-out nearly linear features to rapidly propagating ringlike patterns. It is noted that these forms depend critically on initial disk orientations but do not depend strongly on the sense of disk rotation. The ringlike patterns are found even for collisions with significant impact parameters.

Evidence of magnetic merging from low-altitude spacecraft and ground-based experiments

Magnetic-reconstruction models of magnetospheric phenomena and the airborne and ground-based measurement data supporting such models are reviewed and illustrated with diagrams and graphs. The primary emphasis is on the correlation of east-west flows on the dayside with the y component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), and consideration is given to z-component IMF effects, magnetospheric convection for a northward IMF, and evidence based on particle distributions.

Numerical studies of the merging of vortices

A newly improved method has been employed to study the roll-up and decay of trailing vortex sheets. This method is obtained by using a scheme formulated recently Liu et al., Sept. 1985 to improve the accuracy of the boundary data. The scheme is much more efficient than the previous one used by Weston and Liu (1982). Comparisons of the present numreical results with other numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are presented.
