Health hazards of ultrafine metal and metal oxide powders

Study reveals that suggested threshold limit values are from two to fifty times lower than current recommended threshold limit values. Proposed safe limits of exposure to the ultrafine dusts are based on known toxic potential of various materials as determined in particle size ranges.

Metal-metal reinforced laminar composites

Two prototype laminar composites have shown potential for high strength and high temperature applications. These composites might be made with less in-place anisotropy and be less expensive than comparable fiber composites.

Plasma-sprayed metal-glass and metal-glass fluoride coatings for lubrication to 900 C

Plasma-sprayed composites, which have good oxidation-resistance and self-lubricating characteritics to 900 C, were developed. The composites are a nichrome matrix containing dispersed glass for oxidation protection and calcium fluoride for lubrication; they are applied to bearing surfaces by plasma spraying layers about 0.050 centimeters thick which are then machined to 0.025 centimeters. Oscillating bearing tests were performed in air to 900 C at unit radial loads up to 3.5 x 10 to the 7th power N/sq M (5000 psi) and a thrust load of 1960N (440 lbs). Bearings with a composite liner in the bore were in good condition after over 50,000 oscillating cycles accumulated during repeated, bearing temperatures cycles between 25 and 900 C.

Metal-metal laminar composites for high-temperature applications.

The potentialities of composites consisting of multiple layers of tungsten alternated by layers of Nichrome V (a ductile, weaker than tungsten, but oxidation resistant alloy) at temperatures on the order of 2000 F are studied experimentally. The highest tensile strengths obtained for the composites were 600 MN/sq m (87,000 psi) at 1600 F and 448 MN/sq m (65,000 psi) at 2000 F. Highest 100-hr stress-rupture strengths at these temperatures were 387 MN/sq m (56,000 psi) and 121 MN/sq m (17,500 psi), respectively.
