Electrical properties of epoxies and film resistors

The reliability of hybrid microcircuits has been enhanced in recent years by the use of organic adhesives as a replacement for solder and eutectics. The epoxies have been the most effective and widely used material for this application. Methods for measuring the electrical and mechanical properties of epoxies are developed. Data are given for selected conductive adhesives at high and low frequencies. The temperature coefficients of resistance of thick film resistors are presented.

Structure of density fluctuations near the sun deduced from Pioneer-6 spectral broadening measurements

Spectral broadening of monochromatic radio waves by density fluctuations near the sun is analyzed using the parabolic equation method. Application of the analysis to the 1968 Pioneer-6 spectral broadening observations yields indirect measurements of the density spectrum within 14 solar radii of the sun. For spatial wavenumbers of at least 0.0084 inverse km, the three-dimensional density spectrum is found to be close to the Kolmogorov spectrum (power law with spectral index of 11/3) and is consistent with interplanetary-scintillation and in situ spacecraft measurements farther from the sun. The magnitude of the density spectrum increases, but its shape remains the same during 'solar events' marked by increases in bandwidth.

A new computer approach to map mixed forest features and postprocess multispectral data

A computer technique for mapping mixed softwood and hardwood stands in multispectral satellite imagery of forest regions is described. The purpose of the technique is to obtain smoother resource maps useful in timber harvesting operations. The computer program relies on an algorithm which assesses the size and similarity of adjacent sections on satellite imagery (Landsat-1 data is used) and constructs, through an iteration of the basic algorithm, a more general map of timber mixtures, eliminating the mottled appearance of the raw imagery. Despite difficulties in the experimental analysis of a Texas forest, apparently due to relatively low resolution of the Landsat data, the computer classification approach outlined is suggested as a generally applicable method of creating serviceable maps from multispectral imagery.

The numerical solution of viscous flows at high Reynolds number

A review is presented of implicit and hybrid methods applicable to solving viscous flows at high Reynolds numbers. Flows within axisymmetric channels containing stationary shock waves, past blunt-nosed lifting airfoils, past sharp-nosed symmetric airfoils with buffet, past three-dimensional compression ramps with side walls, and past ogive- and hemisphere-cylinders at angle of attack have been examined. Reynolds numbers as high as 10 to the 9th power have been used.

Load-Displacement Measurement on Pin-Loaded Specimens

Tubes apply as displacement is registered by long armed, double-cantilever gage. Sharp points at ends of arms protrude through holes in tube walls and contact center of area of load applications. Method was devised for determining load point displacement accurately. No extraneous displacement fraction is present in measurement, and data-correction procedures are unnecessary.

Internal coating of air-cooled gas turbine blades

Four modified aluminide coatings were developed for IN-792 + Hf alloy using a powder pack method applicable to internal surfaces of air-cooled blades. The coating compositions are Ni-19Al-1Cb, Ni-19Al-3Cb, Ni-17Al-20Cr, and Ni-12Al-20Cr. Cyclic burner rig hot corrosion (900 C) and oxidation (1050 C) tests indicated that Ni-Al-Cb coatings provided better overall resistance than Ni-Al-Cr coatings. Tensile properties of Ni-19Al-1Cb and Ni-12Al-20Cr coated test bars were fully retained at room temperature and 649 C. Stress rupture results exhibited wide scatter around uncoated IN-792 baseline, especially at high stress levels. High cycle fatigue lives of Ni-19Al-1Cb and Ni-12Al-20Cr coated bars (as well as RT-22B coated IN-792) suffered approximately 30 percent decrease at 649 C. Since all test bars were fully heat treated after coating, the effects of coating/processing on IN-792 alloy were not recoverable. Internally coated Ni-19Al-1Cb, Ni-19Al-3Cb, and Ni-12Al-20Cr blades were included in 500-hour endurance engine test and the results were similar to those obtained in burner rig oxidation testing.

More-Uniform Heat Curing for Structural Repairs

Copper lining helps to distribute heat under heating blanket. Bond during setup employs heating blanket over copper sheet within vacuum bag. Copper sheet smoothes out temperature distribution under hotspots in heater. Method applicable to uniformly heating such low-thermal-conductivity metals as titanium or stainless steel.

Ocean experiments and remotely sensed images of chemically dispersed oil spills

A series of experiments was performed at sea where the effectiveness of dispersants applied from a helicopter was tested on fresh and weathered crude oils released from a surface research vessel. In conjunction with these experiments, remote sensing measurements using an array of airborne optical and microwave sensors were performed in order to aid in the interpretation of the dispersant effectiveness and to obtain quantitative images of oil on the sea under controlled conditions. Surface oil thickness and volume are inferred from airborne measurements using a dual-channel microwave imaging radiometer, aerial color photography, and an airborne oceanographic lidar. The remotely sensed measurements are compared with point sampled data obtained using a research vessel. The mass balance computations of surface versus subsurface oil volume using remotely sensed and point sampled data are consistent with each other and with the volumes of oil released. Data collected by the several techniques concur in indicating that, for the oils used and under the sea conditions encountered, the dispersant and application method are primarily useful when applied to fresh oil.

Estimating vegetation coverage in St. Joseph Bay, Florida with an airborne multispectral scanner

A four-channel multispectral scanner (MSS) carried aboard an aircraft was used to collect data along several flight paths over St. Joseph Bay, FL. Various classifications of benthic features were defined from the results of ground-truth observations. The classes were statistically correlated with MSS channel signal intensity using multivariate methods. Application of the classification measures to the MSS data set allowed computer construction of a detailed map of benthic features of the bay. Various densities of segrasses, various bottom types, and algal coverage were distinguished from water of various depths. The areal vegetation coverage of St. Joseph Bay was not significantly different from the results of a survey conducted six years previously, suggesting that seagrasses are a very stable feature of the bay bottom.

Synthesized airfoil data method for prediction of dynamic stall and unsteady airloads

A detailed analysis of dynamic stall experiments has led to a set of relatively compact analytical expressions, called synthesized unsteady airfoil data, which accurately describe in the time-domain the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of stalled airfoils. An analytical research program was conducted to expand and improve this synthesized unsteady airfoil data method using additional available sets of unsteady airfoil data. The primary objectives were to reduce these data to synthesized form for use in rotor airload prediction analyses and to generalize the results. Unsteady drag data were synthesized which provided the basis for successful expansion of the formulation to include computation of the unsteady pressure drag of airfoils and rotor blades. Also, an improved prediction model for airfoil flow reattachment was incorporated in the method. Application of this improved unsteady aerodynamics model has resulted in an improved correlation between analytic predictions and measured full scale helicopter blade loads and stress data.

Review of recent research of interior noise of propeller aircraft

Publications on the topics of propeller source noise, airborne noise transmission, and passenger comfort response to noise and vibration are reviewed. Of the 187 publications referenced, 140 have appeared since 1978. Examples of research accomplishments are presented to illustrate the state of the art. Emphasis is on comparisons of theoretical and measured results, but the description of the theories is left to the references. This review shows that substantial progress has been made in understanding the characteristics of propeller noise, airborne noise, and passenger response, and in the development of prediction methods. Application of the technology to cabin noise control and possible future research directions are discussed.
