Development status of regenerable solid amine CO2 control systems

The development history of solid amine/water desorbed (SAWD) CO2 control systems is reviewed. The design of the preprototype SAWD I CO2 system on the basis of a three-man metabolic load at the 3.8 mm Hg ambient CO2 level, and the functions of the CO2 removal, CO2 storage/delivery, controller, and life test laboratory support packages are described. The development of a full-scale multiple canister SAWD II preprototype system, which is capable of conducting the CO2 removal/concentration function in a closed-loop atmosphere revitalization system during zero-gravity operation, is examined. The operation of the SAWD II system, including the absorption and desorption cycles, is analyzed. A reduction in the thermal mass of the canister and the system's energy transfer technique result in efficient energy use. The polyether foam, nylon felt, nickel foam, spring retained, and metal bellows bed tests performed to determine the design of the zero-gravity canister are studied; metal bellows are selected for the canister's configuration.

Qualification Testing of General Electric 50 Ah Nickel-Cadmium Cells with New Separator and New Positive Plate Processing

Forty-two 50 Ah aerospace nickel-cadmium cells were delivered to Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) by General Electric (GE) in February, 1985, for the purpose of evaluating and qualifying a new nylon separator material Pellon 2536, and the new GE Positive Plate Nickel Attack Control Passivation process. Testing began in May, 1985, at the Naval Weapons Support Center (NWSC) in Crane, Indiana with standard initial evaluation tests. Life cycling in both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO) began in July, 1985, with approximately 1200 LEO cycles complete at this writting. Early test results show that cells with positive plate passivation exhibit higher than normal charge voltage characteristics. Other aspects of performance were nominal.

Aerospace nickel-cadmium cell separator qualifications program

The present space qualified nylon separator, Pellon 2505 ML, is no longer available for aerospace nickel-cadmium (NiCd) cells. As a result of this anticipated unavailability, a joint Government program between the Air Force Space Division and the Naval Research Laboratory was established. Four cell types were procured with both the old qualified and the new unqualified separators. Acceptance, characterization, and life cycling tests are to be performed at the Naval Weapons Support Center, Crane, Ind. (NWSC/Crane). The scheduling and current status of this program are discussed and the progress of testing and available results are projected.

Effects of backing plates on the electron exposure of thin polymer films

The effects of backing plates on the radiation dose received by thin nylon films were calculated using recently developed multilayer electron transport codes. The film dose increased with increasing atomic number of the backing plate. The estimated dose could be off by a factor of 2 or more if the backing plate were ignored in the calculations.

Advanced nickel-cadmium batteries for geosynchronous spacecraft

A nickel cadmium battery was developed that can be operated at 80 percent depth of discharge in excess of 10 years in a geosynchronous orbit application, and has about a 30 percent weight savings per spacecraft over present nickel cadmium batteries when used with a 1000 watts eclipse load. The approach used in the development was to replace nylon separators with inert polymer impregnated zirconia, use electrochemically deposited plates in place of conventional chemically precipitated ones, and use an additive to extend negative plate lifetime. The design has undergone extensive testing using both engineering and protoflight cell configurations.

Support For Fragile Borescopes

Fixture supports thin borescopes during inspections through 0.0405-in. orifices. Porescopes, which have diameter of 0.037 in., extremely fragile and often fractured during inspections, contaminating inspected cavitites with debris. Nylon guide tip and acrylic support sleeve and body protect and guide a fragile borescope. Support sleeve press-fitted on body and removed when little clearance around orifice inspected. Otherwise, it helps to stablize fixture. Helps to prevent damage caused by vibrations and eliminates constantly moving view that afflicts unsupported small-diameter borescopes.

Qualification testing of General Electric 50 Ah nickel-cadmium cells with Pellon 2536 separator and passivated positive plates

Forty-two 50 Ah nickel-cadmium cells were delivered to the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) by General Electric (GE) in February, 1985 for the purpose of evaluating and qualifying a nonwoven nylon separator material, Pellon 2536, and the GE positive plate nickel attack control gas passivation process. Testing began May, 1985 at the Naval Weapons Support Center (NWSC) in Crane, Indiana with GSFC standard initial evaluation tests. Life cycling in both Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO) began in July, 1985 with approximately 6500 LEO cycles and three GEO eclipse seasons completed. After early problems in maintaining test pack temperature control, all packs are performing well but are exhibiting higher than normal charge voltage characteristics.

Passive damping concepts for free and forced member and grillage vibration

The performance of potential passive damping concepts is investigted for a long tubular aluminum alloy member, and a two-bar grillage structure. The members are restrained partially at the ends and are of the type being considered by NASA for possible use in the construction of a future space station. Four different passive damping concepts are studied and include nylon brush, wool swab, copper brush, and silly putty in chamber dampers. Both free and forced vibration tests are conducted. It is found that the silly putty in chamber damper concept provides considerably greater passive damping as compared to that of the other three concepts. For the grillage natural vibration, a five wool swab damper configuration provides greater damping than the five silly putty dampers in chamber configuration. Due to the constrained motion imposed by the vibrator used in the tests, the effectiveness of the passive dampers could not be adequately evaluated for the individual member. However, it is found that for the grillage under forced vibration, the five silly putty dampers in chamber damper configuration provides very effective passive damping although only at and around the resonant frequency. At resonance, these dampers provide a 51 percent reduction in the dynamic magnification factor for this case.

Modeling of the transient ignition of a nonmetal/oxygen system by heterogeneous reaction - Effects of oxygen pressure

A theoretical model of the transient ignition of a nonmetallic polymer in a pure oxygen environment was developed and used to assess the safety of an oxygen system under elevated pressure. Results demonstrated that, for a general oxygen system, the ignition temperautre is sensitive to the external heating rate as well as such system parameters as the minimum ignition heat flux and the corresponding minimum ignition temperature. As the oxygen pressure increases, the minimum ignition temperature decreases, until, at a sufficiently high oxygen pressure, spontaneous ignition occurs. Numerical results generated by the model were correlated with the reported ignition data for polyethylene, Teflon, and nylon.

An adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator for SIRTF

An adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) has been proposed to cool bolometric infrared detectors on the multiband imaging photometer of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). One such refrigerator has been built which uses a ferric ammonium alum salt pill suspended by nylon threads in a 3-T solenoid. The resonant modes of this suspension are above 100 Hz. The heat leak to the salt pill is less than 0.5 microW. The system has a hold time at 0.1K of more than 12 h. The cold stage temperature is regulated with a feedback loop that controls the magnetic field. A second, similar refrigerator is being built at a SIRTF prototype to fly on a ballon-borne telescope. It will use a ferromagnetic shield. The possibility of using a high-Tc solenoid-actuated heat switch is also discussed.

An intercomparison of airborne nitric acid measurements

Results are reported on the performance of (1) denuder-tube/chemiluminescent, (2) nylon-filter/ion-chromatography, and (3) tunable-diode-laser/multipath-absorption HNO3 measurement instruments during the NASA Global Tropospheric Experiment Chemical Instrumentation Test and Evaluation 2 (CITE 2) program in summer 1986. The instrument designs, test protocols, and CITE 2 flights are described, and the results are presented in extensive graphs and discussed in detail. The data obtained with the three instruments are shown to be in very poor agreement at mixing ratios below 150 parts per trillion by volume (pptv), with significant discrepancies even at higher levels. Instrument (3) gave systematically higher values than (1) and (2). It is concluded that none of the instruments is accurate enough for reliable use at normal atmospheric HNO3 levels (around 100 pptv).

An evaluation of the liquid oxygen mechanical impact test

This study was conducted to evaluate the repeatability of the ambient LO2 mechanical impact test used by NASA to screen materials for oxygen service (NHB 8060.1B Test 12 Part 1, which is based on the ASTM method). Four materials were tested: Teflon, Vespel SP-21, Viton A, and nylon 6/6. Each test material was subjected to several series of tests that were conducted at different impact energy levels. The results show that the variability from series to series in the reaction threshold energy level is within the precision statement of the ASTM method. However, this precision is considerably broader than the reaction threshold implied by the NHB 8060.1B test criteria.
