Abstract Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are usually an industry’s highest consumer of energy, most of which goes toward space cooling in buildings. Industrial energy-efficiency audits not only benefit manufacturers but also generate significant economic and environmental benefits to localities, states, and the nation. This article analyzes the micro- and macro scale impacts of implementing energy-efficient HVAC systems by integrating the industrial building energy data with the macroeconomic regional economic flow model. Micro-scale data include 10 years of historical energy, cost, and carbon dioxide savings achieved from energy-efficient HVAC implementation offered to manufacturers through industrial energy audits. The data were integrated into the macroeconomic modeling framework to illuminate the cascading regional economic impacts of implementing energy-efficient HVAC recommendations in manufacturing facilities. Results show that if recommendations had been implemented throughout all manufacturers in the region, $656 M energy costs would have been directly saved, 7.8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions would have been avoided, and 4387 jobs could have been created, resulting in a total annual economic impact of $899 M stemming from direct, indirect, and induced impacts. The results offer insight into how industrial energy systems can be designed and provide models for how communities can accomplish a net-zero society.
We present QUEST, a procedure to systematically generate approximations for quantum circuits to reduce their CNOT gate count. Our approach employs circuit partitioning for scalability with procedures to 1) reduce circuit length using approximate synthesis, 2) improve fidelity by running circuits that represent key samples in the approximation space, and 3) reason about approximation upper bound. Our evaluation results indicate that our approach of "dissimilar"approximations provides close fidelity to the original circuit. Overall, the results indicate that QUEST can reduce CNOT gate count by 30-80% on ideal systems and decrease the impact of noise on existing and near-future quantum systems.
Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) using high-energy Nd:glass lasers has the potential to produce ultra-intense pulses (>10 23 W/cm 2 ). We report on the performance of the final high-efficiency amplifier in an OPCPA system based on large-aperture (63 × 63-mm 2 ) partially deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP) crystals. The seed beam (180-nm bandwidth, 110 mJ) was provided by the preceding OPCPA stages. A maximum pump-to-signal conversion efficiency of 41% and signal energy up to 13 J were achieved with a 52-mm-long DKDP crystal due to the flattop super-Gaussian pump beam profile and flat-in-time pulse shape.

This project will ultimately combine observations from Raman lidar, Doppler lidar, AERI, eddy correlation measurements, and airborne and ground-based high spectral resolution lidar systems with many large eddy simulations (LES) of realistic boundary layer cases to study: The diurnal evolution of the boundary layer thermodynamic structure; The turbulent structure of the CBL and the entrainment zone; The ability of LES models to simulate the thermodynamic and turbulent structure of the CBL; How perturbations in the surface properties and CBL properties influence boundary layer clouds; The similarities and differences in the boundary layer and cloud interaction in the marine vs. continental boundary layer.
The Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) Monte Carlo N-Particle® (MCNP®) transport code version 6 has the capability for tracking particles on unstructured mesh (UM) geometry models. The MCNP UM feature was originally designed for the UM models created by the Abaqus/CAE software product. The MCNP version 6.2.0 and later recognizes the UM models read from Abaqus INP files or MCNPUM files converted from Abaqus INP files. Other finite element analysis software packages may generate UM models and then convert these models into Abaqus INP formats.
This Master’s Capstone project will present a comparison of statistical models for computer simulation studies. The four models included in this comparison study were chosen for both their proven and diverse methodologies. We will present a case study on hurricane flood data in the Delaware bay which highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each model when applied to a very large spatial field. As computers have gotten faster, we have become interested in modeling increasingly large spatial fields in both size and resolution. Statistical algorithms that are able to efficiently handle these fields have never been more important. We therefore find this comparison to be extremely topical.
Autonomous algorithms use energy detectors to find template waveforms for repeating sources. These template waveforms parameterize pattern matching detectors. Template extracting is upstream of all template matching efforts. Operations must adaptively quantify performance of template methods
Timing spread between the thirty-six Saturn modules affects peak electrical power delivered to the Bremsstrahlung diode and can affect vacuum power flow and impedance behavior of the load. To reduce the module spread, a new megavolt gas-insulated closing switch was developed employing design techniques developed for the Z-machine laser triggered switches while retaining Saturn’s simpler electrical triggering. Two modules were temporarily outfitted with the new switches and used separately into local resistive loads (instead of the usual Saturn electron beam load). A reliable operating point and switch time jitter at that point were the goals of the experiments. The target switch reliability is less than one pre-fire in one thousand switch-shots, and a timing standard deviation of 4 nanoseconds. The switches were able to meet both requirements but the number of tests at the chosen point are limited.
