X-Ray Burst and Persistent Emission Properties of the Magnetar SGR 1830-0645 in Outburst
We report on NICER X-ray monitoring of the magnetar SGR 1830−0645 covering 223 days following its 2020 October outburst, as well as Chandra and radio observations. We present the most accurate spin ephemerides of the source so far: ν = 0.096008680(2) Hz, $\dot{\n𝜈}=-6.2(1) x (10)^(-14) Hz/s, and significant second and third frequency derivative terms indicative of nonnegligible timing noise. The phase-averaged 0.8–7 keV spectrum is well fit with a double-blackbody (BB) model throughout the campaign. The BB temperatures remain constant at 0.46 and 1.2 keV. The areas and flux of each component decreased by a factor of 6, initially through a steep decay trend lasting about 46 days, followed by a shallow long-term one. The pulse shape in the same energy range is initially complex, exhibiting three distinct peaks, yet with clear continuous evolution throughout the outburst toward a simpler, single-pulse shape. The rms pulsed fraction is high and increases from about 40% to 50%. We find no dependence of pulse shape or fraction on energy. These results suggest that multiple hot spots, possibly possessing temperature gradients, emerged at outburst onset and shrank as the outburst decayed. We detect 84 faint bursts with NICER, having a strong preference for occurring close to the surface emission pulse maximum—the first time this phenomenon is detected in such a large burst sample. This likely implies a very low altitude for the burst emission region and a triggering mechanism connected to the surface active zone. Finally, our radio observations at several epochs and multiple frequencies reveal no evidence of pulsed or burst-like radio emission.
Unsupervised Deep Persistent Monocular Visual Odometry and Depth Estimation in Extreme Environments
In recent years, unsupervised deep learning ap-proaches have received a significant attention to estimate depthand visual odometry (VO) from unlabelled monocular imagesequences. However, their performance is limited in challengingenvironments due to perceptual degradation, occlusions andrapid motions. Moreover, the existing unsupervised methodssuffer from the lack of scale-consistency constraints acrossframes, which causes that the VO estimators fail to providepersistent trajectories over long sequences. In this study, wepropose a unsupervised monocular deep VO framework thatpredicts 6 degrees-of-freedom pose camera motion and depthmap of the scene from unlabelled RGB image sequences. We provide detailed quantitative and qualitative evaluationsof the proposed framework on a) a challenging dataset col-lected during the DARPA Subterranean challenge1; and b)the benchmark KITTI and Cityscapes datasets. The proposedapproach outperforms both traditional and state-of-the-artunsupervised deep VO methods providing better results for bothpose estimation and depth recovery. The presented approach ispart of the solution used by the COSTAR team participatingat the DARPA Subterranean Challenge
A persistently low level of atmospheric oxygen in Earth’s middle age
Resolving how Earth surface redox conditions evolved through the Proterozoic Eon is fundamental to understanding how biogeochemical cycles have changed through time. The redox sensitivity of cerium relative to other rare earth elements and its uptake in carbonate minerals make the Ce anomaly (Ce/Ce*) a particularly useful proxy for capturing redox conditions in the local marine environment. Here, we report Ce/Ce* data in marine carbonate rocks through 3.5 billion years of Earth’s history, focusing in particular on the mid-Proterozoic Eon (i.e., 1.8 – 0.8 Ga). To better understand the role of atmospheric oxygenation, we use Ce/ Ce* data to estimate the partial pressure of atmospheric oxygen (pO2) through this time. Our thermodynamics-based modeling supports a major rise in atmospheric oxygen level in the aftermath of the Great Oxidation Event (~ 2.4 Ga), followed by invariant pO2 of about 1% of present atmospheric level through most of the Proterozoic Eon (2.4 to 0.65 Ga).
Uncertainty in Land-Use Adaptation Persists Despite Crop Model Projections Showing Lower Impacts Under High Warming
Climate change is expected to impact crop yields and alter resource availability. However, the understanding of the potential of agricultural land-use adaptation and its costs under climate warming is limited. Here, we use a global land system model to assess land-use-based adaptation and its cost under a set of crop model projections, including CO2 fertilization, based on climate model outputs. In our simulations of a low-emissions scenario, the land system responds through slight changes in cropland area in 2100, with costs close to zero. For a high emissions scenario and impacts uncertainty, the response tends toward cropland area changes and investments in technology, with average adaptation costs between −1.5 and +19 US$05 per ton of dry matter per year. Land-use adaptation can reduce adverse climate effects and use favorable changes, like local gains in crop yields. However, variance among high-emissions impact projections creates challenges for effective adaptation planning.
MISTRAL: Concept and Analysis of Persistent Airborne Localization of GHG Emissions
In this study, we propose a concept for localizing and mitigating greenhouse gases and other emissions from areas of various sizes, using a multiscale, airborne localization fleet, supported by information from satellites. Our objective is a rapidly implementable capability for the reduction of atmospheric methane by empowering the communities in proximity to emissions to actively contribute to methane mitigation via fleet operations by local governments, first responders, and individuals . Fully autonomous operations are economically desirable and technically feasible now. However, the development of regulations for autonomous operations is in early stages. Since rapid impact is critical to reducing emissions, the concept starts with remotely controlled vehicles. As regulations for autonomous operations reach maturity, the concept can be easily transitioned from the remotely piloted to autonomous mode. We report on a preliminary system analysis of the concept. Localization of methane emissions from the Permian Basin oil and gas production site serves as the design reference mission; however, the airborne concept is applicable to a broad range of use cases, and we describe several in this analysis. We consider leveraging satellite and ground-based resources within the airborne concept of operations. The study analyses uninhabited aerial system localization operations under the most conservative assumptions on resources and available information. Even under these assumptions, the concept is shown to be viable for local community operations.
