A digital twin approach to system-level fault detection and diagnosis for improved equipment health monitoring

Automating the task of fault detection and diagnosis is crucial in the effort to reduce the operation and maintenance cost in the nuclear industry. This paper describes a physics-based approach for system-level diagnosis in thermal-hydraulic systems in nuclear power plants. The inclusion of physics information allows for the creation of virtual sensors, which provide improved fault diagnosis capability. The physics information also serves to better constrain diagnostic solutions to the physical domain. As a demonstration, various test cases for fault diagnosis in a high-pressure feedwater system were considered. The use of virtual sensors allows constructing performance models for two first-point feedwater heaters which would not have been possible otherwise due to the limited sensor set. Real-time plant data provided by a utility partner were used to assess the diagnostic approach. The detection of an abnormal event immediate after a plant startup pointed to faulty behaviors in the two first-point feedwater heaters. Further, this double-blind fault diagnosis was subsequently confirmed by the plant operator. In addition, several simulated sensor fault events demonstrated the capability of our algorithms in detecting and discriminating sensor faults.

2022 MB3a Infrasound Sensor Type Approval Evaluation

Sandia National Laboratories has tested and evaluated an updated version of the MB3a infrasound sensor, designed by CEA and manufactured by SeismoWave. The purpose of this infrasound sensor evaluation is to measure the performance characteristics in such areas as power consumption, sensitivity, full scale, self-noise, dynamic range, response, passband, sensitivity variation due to changes in barometric pressure and temperature, and sensitivity to acceleration. The MB3a infrasound sensors are being evaluated for use in the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the Preparatory Commission to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

Sublimation temperature sensor for temperature locale

The sublimation temperature sensor (or “sublime sensor”) provides a continuum of measurement locations in which certain maximum temperatures are achieved during a heat up/cool down cycle. A predetermined material is encapsulated within a vacuum-sealed, non-volatile long tube (i.e., both ends capped and L$\gg$ D). This assembly is then inserted and centered into a heated zone, such as a furnace, exhaust pipe, or reactor. As the temperature increases, the material will sublimate (i.e., a process of having both the solid and gaseous states of matter simultaneously present) and will begin to fill the void - moving outward in both directions toward the ends of the tube. Once beyond the elevated temperatures, the gas will de-sublimate (i.e., deposition) onto the inner wall of the tube. The desired result of the sensor is the ring of material that develops over a relatively short period of time. This material deposit can be equated with temperature at an exact location. There is no need to interpolate and/or extrapolate for the desired measurement. Accuracy has been recorded for temperature locations on the range of ±2 mm over a 1 m span. Likewise, the precision of the measurement is ±0.2% the overall sensor domain. Furthermore, individual tubes with unique materials and pressures can be bundled together to provide a complete temperature profile of the heated zone.

Size-tunable silver nanoparticle synthesis in glycerol driven by a low-pressure nonthermal plasma

Silver nanoparticles (NPs) are extensively used in electronic components, chemical sensors, and disinfection applications, in which many of their properties depend on particle size. However, control over silver NP size and morphology still remains a challenge for many synthesis techniques. Here, in this work, we demonstrate the surfactant-free synthesis of silver NPs using a low-pressure inductively coupled nonthermal argon plasma. Continuously forming droplets of silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) precursor dissolved in glycerol are exposed to the plasma, with the droplet residence time being determined by the precursor flow rate. Glycerol has rarely been studied in plasma-liquid interactions but shows favorable properties for controlled NP synthesis at low pressure. We show that the droplet residence time and plasma power have strong influence on NP properties, and that improved size control and particle monodispersity can be achieved by pulsed power operation. Silver NPs had mean diameters of 20 nm with geometric standard deviations of 1.6 under continuous wave operation, which decreased to 6 nm mean and 1.3 geometric standard deviation for pulsed power operation at 100 Hz and 20% duty cycle. We propose that solvated electrons from the plasma and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation induced electrons produced in glycerol are the main reducing agents of Ag + , the precursor for NPs, while no significant change of chemical composition of the glycerol solvent was detected.
