NASTRAN thermal analyzer: A general purpose finite element heat transfer computer program

The program not only can render temperature distributions in solids subjected to various thermal boundary conditions, including effects of diffuse-gray thermal radiation, but is fully compatible in capacity and in the finite-element model representation with that of its structural counterpart in the NASTRAN system. The development history of the finite-element approach for determining temperatures is summarized. The scope of analysis capability, program structure, features, and limitations are given with the objective of providing NASTRAN users with an overall veiw of the NASTRAN thermal analyzer.

The use of computer graphic techniques for the determination of ventricular function.

Description of computer techniques employed to increase the speed, accuracy, reliability, and scope of angiocardiographic analyses determining human heart dimensions. Chamber margins are traced with a Calma 303 digitizer from projections of the angiographic films. The digitized margins of the ventricular images are filed in a computer for subsequent analysis. The margins can be displayed on the television screen of a graphics unit for individual study or they can be viewed in real time (or at any selected speed) to study dynamic changes in the chamber outline. The construction of three dimensional images of the ventricle is described.

Survey of space escape/rescue/survivability capabilities.

Discussion of preventive or remedial systems to achieve safer space flight operations. Escape, rescue, and survival systems are defined by categories: on board, prepositioned aid, and earth-launched concepts. The survey considers separable escape or survival capsules; standby escape or rescue systems; and earth-launched manned and unmanned rescue systems. Reports covering such systems are listed, and the contents are classified as to scope of investigation, space mission, and design approach. Mission classes considered are earth orbit, lunar, and interplanetary. Results of the space escape, rescue, and survivability investigations are summarized in terms of system features and performance, including apparent voids or limitations in rescue capability. Recovery requirements and resources for space rescue are discussed.

Mariner 9 - Image processing and products.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the system for the display, processing, and production of image data products created to support the Mariner 9 Television Experiment. Of necessity, the system was large in order to respond to the needs of a large team of scientists with a broad scope of experimental objectives. The desire to generate processed data products as rapidly as possible to take advantage of adaptive planning during the mission, coupled with the complexities introduced by the nature of the vidicon camera, greatly increased the scale of the ground image processing effort. This paper describes the systems that carried out the processes and delivered the products necessary for real-time and near-real-time analyses. References are made to the computer algorithms used for the different levels of decalibration and analysis.

Problems and issues for short-haul air transportation.

The problems of developing an efficient short-haul air system are not primarily technical, but economic and political. The key issues are whether the community will accept new and expanded air facilities, what standards of service the passengers will demand and how the system will evolve. The solutions recommended are national in scope and require the federal government to take a leading role.

An integrated computer system for preliminary design of advanced aircraft.

A progress report is given on the first phase of a research project to develop a system of Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design (IPAD) which is intended to automate to the largest extent possible the preliminary and detailed design of advanced aircraft. The approach used is to build a pilot system and simultaneously to carry out two major contractual studies to define a practical IPAD system preparatory to programing. The paper summarizes the specifications and goals of the IPAD system, the progress to date, and any conclusion reached regarding its feasibility and scope. Sample calculations obtained with the pilot system are given for aircraft preliminary designs optimized with respect to discipline parameters, such as weight or L/D, and these results are compared with designs optimized with respect to overall performance parameters, such as range or payload.

New space processing experiments for the Skylab missions.

The M512 Materials Processing Facility, which is the main item of equipment for the Skylab space manufacturing experiments is described. It is basically an electron-beam welding apparatus, consisting of a battery power supply, a 20-kV electron beam source, and a spherical 40-cm-diam vacuum chamber. It will be used to perform the M551 Metals Melting Experiment, the M552 Exothermic Brazing Experiment, the M553 Sphere Forming Experiment, the M554 Composite Casting Experiment, the M555 Gallium Arsenide Crystal Growth Experiment, the M561 Whisker-Reinforced Composites Experiment, the M562 Indium Antimonide Crystal Growth, Experiment, the M563 Mixed III-V Crystal Growth Experiment, the M564 Alkali Halide Eutectics Experiment, the M565 Silver Grids Melted in Space Experiment, and the M566 Copper-Aluminum Eutectic Experiment. Three apparatus systems designed to broaden the technical scope of the experiments and to gain experience with new experimental techniques are described. These are an electrophoretic separator, an electromagnetic levitation system, and a versatile electric furnace with an electronic control system.
