Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects in epitaxial thin films of kagome semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn 3 Ge , an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall/Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D 0 19 Mn 3 Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse spin-Hall effects are observed in thermoelectric and spin-pumping devices. The anomalous Nernst signal in our Mn 3 Ge films is estimated to be 0.1 μV/K and is comparable to that in ferromagnetic Fe, despite Mn 3 Ge having a weak magnetization of ~ 3.5 m μ B / Mn at room temperature. In this work, the spin-mixing conductance is 90.5 nm – 2 at the Py / Mn 3 Ge interface, and the spin-Hall angle in Mn 3 Ge is estimated to be about eight times of that in Pt.

Challenges to magnetic doping of thin films of the Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2

Magnetic doping of topological quantum materials provides an attractive route for studying the effects of time-reversal symmetry breaking. Thus motivated, we explore the introduction of the transition metal Mn into thin films of the Dirac semimetal Cd 3 A s2 during growth by molecular beam epitaxy. Scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements show the formation of a Mn-rich phase at the top surface of Mn-doped Cd 3 A s2 thin films grown using both uniform doping and delta doping. This suggests that Mn acts as a surfactant during epitaxial growth of Cd 3 A s2 , resulting in phase separation. Magnetometry measurements of such samples indicate a ferromagnetic phase with out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy. Electrical magneto-transport measurements of these films as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and chemical potential reveal a lower carrier density and higher electron mobility compared with pristine Cd 3 A s2 films grown under similar conditions. This suggests that the surfactant effect might also serve to remove impurities from the bulk of the film. Further, we observe robust quantum transport (Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and an incipient integer quantum Hall effect) in very thin (7 nm) Cd 3 A s2 films despite being in direct contact with a structurally disordered surface ferromagnetic overlayer.

Observation of Fermi arcs and Weyl nodes in a noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal

Weyl semimetal (WSM), a novel state of quantum matter, hosts Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles resulting from the breaking of either inversion or time-reversal symmetry. Magnetic WSMs that arise from broken time-reversal symmetry provide an exceptional platform to understand the interplay between magnetic order and Weyl physics, but only a few WSMs have been realized. Here, in this study, we identify CeAlSi as a new noncentrosymmetric magnetic WSM via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles, density-functional theory based calculations. Our surface-sensitive vacuum ultraviolet ARPES data confirm the presence of surface Fermi arcs as the conclusive evidence for the existence of the Weyl semimetallic state in CeAlSi. We also observe bulk Weyl cones at the Fermi arc terminations in CeAlSi using bulk-sensitive soft-x-ray ARPES measurements. These results implicate CeAlSi as a unique platform for investigating exotic quantum phenomena resulting from the interaction of topology and magnetism.

Weyl semimetal phases and intrinsic spin-Hall conductivity in SbAs ordered alloys

Here, using density functional theory calculations, we investigated possible Weyl semimetal (WSM) phases in antimony arsenide ordered alloys Sb 1-x ⁢As x (x=0, 1/6, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 5/6, 1). We find WSM phases for all As compositions of Sb 1-x ⁢As x with broken inversion symmetry, in contrast to Bi 1-x⁢ Sb x where only compositions x=1/2 and 5/6 were predicted to exhibit WSM phases. The WSM phases in Sb 1-x ⁢As x are characterized by the presence of 12 Weyl points, located within 55 meV from the Fermi level in the case of x = 1/2. The robust spin-orbit coupling strength and Berry curvature in these alloys produce large spin-Hall conductivity in the range of 176–602 ($\hslash$/e)(S/cm), comparable to that in the BiSb alloys. Finally, Sb 0.5 ⁢As 0.5 is predicted to be almost lattice matched to GaAs(111), with the Fermi level within the gap of the semiconductor, facilitating growth and characterization, and thus, offering promising integration with conventional semiconductors.

Collapsing of spin-split Fermi surfaces in the magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate EuAuSb

EuAuSb is a magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate that exhibits in-plane ferromagnetic ordering and a helical magnetic order across the plane at temperatures below 3.9 K. These magnetic characteristics can drive an interaction-induced reconstruction of the Fermi surface. Here, we report a rare instance of Fermi surface splitting and collapsing driven by exchange coupling, as revealed by strongly temperature-dependent quantum oscillation frequencies in EuAuSb. Shubnikov–de Haas measurements reveal two distinct quantum oscillation frequencies (𝐹 𝛼 = 80 T and 𝐹 𝛽 = 165 T) at 2 K. As the temperature increases toward 40 K, the oscillation peaks at these two frequencies gradually merge into a single peak centered around 128 T. This behavior signifies the collapse of the spin-split Fermi surfaces, driven by the weakening of short-range magnetic correlations and the exchange coupling between conduction electrons and local magnetic moments as temperature increases. Furthermore, our results are further supported by density functional theory calculations, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements.

Correlated oxide Dirac semimetal in the extreme quantum limit

Quantum materials (QMs) with strong correlation and nontrivial topology are indispensable to next-generation information and computing technologies. Exploitation of topological band structure is an ideal starting point to realize correlated topological QMs. Here, we report that strain-induced symmetry modification in correlated oxide SrNbO 3 thin films creates an emerging topological band structure. Dirac electrons in strained SrNbO 3 films reveal ultrahigh mobility (μ max ≈ 100,000 cm 2 /Vs), exceptionally small effective mass (m* ~ 0.04m e ), and nonzero Berry phase. Strained SrNbO 3 films reach the extreme quantum limit, exhibiting a sign of fractional occupation of Landau levels and giant mass enhancement. Our results suggest that symmetry-modified SrNbO 3 is a rare example of correlated oxide Dirac semimetals, in which strong correlation of Dirac electrons leads to the realization of a novel correlated topological QM.

Controlling and visualizing Dirac physics in topological semimetal heterostructures

A bulk crystal of cadmium arsenide is a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, but, in a thin film, it can behave like a three-dimensional topological insulator. This tunability provides unique opportunities to manipulate and explore a topological insulator phase. However, an obstacle to engineering such tunability is the subtlety of transport-based discriminants for topological phases. In this work, the quantum capacitance of cadmium arsenide–based heterostructures provides two direct experimental signatures of three-dimensional topological insulator physics: an insulating three-dimensional bulk and a Landau level at zero energy that does not disperse in a magnetic field. We proceed to join our ability to see these fingerprints of the topological surface states with flexibility afforded by our epitaxial heterostructures to demonstrate a route toward controlling the energy of the Dirac nodes on each surface. These results point to new avenues for engineering topological insulators based on cadmium arsenide.

Electronic commensuration of a spin moiré superlattice in a layered magnetic semimetal

Spin moiré superlattices (SMSs) have been proposed as a magnetic analog of crystallographic moiré systems and a source of electron minibands offering vector-field moiré tunability and Berry curvature effects. However, it has proven challenging to realize an SMS in which a large exchange coupling J is transmitted between conduction electrons and localized spins. Furthermore, most systems have carrier mean free paths l mfp shorter than their spin moiré lattice constant a spin , inhibiting miniband formation. Here, we discover that the layered magnetic semimetal EuAg 4 Sb 2 overcomes these challenges by forming an interface with J ~ 100 milli–electron volts transferred between a Eu triangular lattice and anionic Ag 2 Sb bilayers hosting a two-dimensional electron band in the ballistic regime (l mfp >> a spin ). The system realizes an SMS with a spin commensurate with the Fermi momentum, leading to a marked quenching of the transport response from miniband formation. Our findings demonstrate an approach to magnetically engineering moiré superlattices and a potential route to an emergent spin-driven quantum Hall state.

Surface conduction and reduced electrical resistivity in ultrathin noncrystalline NbP semimetal

The electrical resistivity of conventional metals such as copper is known to increase in thin films as a result of electron-surface scattering, thus limiting the performance of metals in nanoscale electronics. Here, in this study, we find an unusual reduction of resistivity with decreasing film thickness in niobium phosphide (NbP) semimetal deposited at relatively low temperatures of 400°C. In films thinner than 5 nanometers, the room temperature resistivity (~34 microhm centimeters for 1.5-nanometer-thick NbP) is up to six times lower than the resistivity of our bulk NbP films, and lower than conventional metals at similar thickness (typically about 100 microhm centimeters). The NbP films are not crystalline but display local nanocrystalline, short-range order within an amorphous matrix. Our analysis suggests that the lower effective resistivity is caused by conduction through surface channels, together with high surface carrier density and sufficiently good mobility as the film thickness is reduced. These results and the fundamental insights obtained here could enable ultrathin, low-resistivity wires for nanoelectronics beyond the limitations of conventional metals.

Theoretical investigations on Kerr and Faraday rotations in topological multi-Weyl Semimetals

Motivated by the recent proposal of giant Kerr rotation in WSMs, we investigate the Kerr and Faraday rotations in time-reversal broken multi-Weyl semimetals (mWSMs) in the absence of an external magnetic field. Using the framework of Kubo response theory, we find that both the longitudinal and transverse components of the optical conductivity in mWSMs are modified by the topological charge ( n n ). Engendered by the optical Hall conductivity, we show in the thin film limit that, while the giant Kerr rotation and corresponding ellipticity are independent of n n , the Faraday rotation and its ellipticity angle scale as n n and n^2 n 2 , respectively. In contrast, the polarization rotation in semi-infinite mWSMs is dominated by the axion field showing n n dependence. In particular, the magnitude of Kerr (Faraday) angle decreases (increases) with increasing n n in Faraday geometry, whereas in Voigt geometry, it depicts different n n -dependencies in different frequency regimes. The obtained results on the behavior of polarization rotations in mWSMs could be used in experiments as a probe to distinguish single, double, and triple WSMs, as well as discriminate the surfaces of mWSMs with and without hosting Fermi arcs.

Topological Surface and Bulk States in Dirac Semimetal Alpha-Sn Thin Films

Supported by this DOE grant, we made significant advancements in the study and application of topological surface states (TSS) in topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) α-Sn thin films. Our key findings include: (1) the successful growth of TDS α-Sn thin films via sputtering, an industry-friendly technique, on Si and InSb substrates, marking a breakthrough over previous molecular beam epitaxy methods, (2) the demonstration of enhanced damping in adjacent NiFe thin films due to the TSS of α-Sn, (3) the first observation of a strong bilinear magneto-electric resistance (BMER) effect in TDS materials at room temperature, with responses surpassing previous results, (4) the identification of quantum oscillations in α-Sn thin films associated with the TSS, revealing critical quantum transport characteristics such as Berry phase and quantum mobility, (5) the first experimental observation of negative magnetoresistance in α-Sn, and (6) the demonstration of spinorbit torque-driven, field-free magnetization switching in an α-Sn/Ag/CoFeB trilayer, achieving efficiency levels higher than conventional heavy-metal-based structures, highlighting the essential role of TSS in enabling the switching process.

Observation of a Flat and Extended Surface State in a Topological Semimetal

A flat band structure in momentum space is considered key for the realization of novel phenomena. A topological flat band, also known as a drumhead state, is an ideal platform to drive new exotic topological quantum phases. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we reveal the emergence of a highly localized surface state in a topological semimetal BaAl4 and provide its full energy and momentum space topology. We find that the observed surface state is localized in momentum, inside a square-shaped bulk Dirac nodal loop, and in energy, leading to a flat band and a peak in the density of state. These results imply this class of materials as an experimental realization of drumhead surface states and provide an important reference for future studies of the fundamental physics of correlated quantum effects in topological materials.

Pressure Induced Topological Quantum Phase Transition in Weyl Semimetal T d -MoTe 2

In this paper, we report the temperature and pressure (p max ≃1.5 GPa) evolution of the crystal structure of the Weyl semimetal T d -MoTe 2 by combination of neutron diffraction and the X-ray total scattering experiments. We find that the fundamental non-centrosymmetric structure T d is fully suppressed and transforms into a centrosymmertic 1T' structure at a critical pressure of p cr ~ 1.2–1.4 GPa. This is strong evidence for a pressure induced quantum phase transition (QPT) between topological to a trivial electronic state. Although the topological QPT has strong effect on magnetoresistance, it is interesting that the superconducting (SC) critical temperature T c , the superfluid density, and the SC gap all change smoothly and continuously across p cr and no sudden effects are seen concomitantly with the suppression of the T d structure. This implies that the T c , and thus the SC pairing strength, is unaffected by the topological QPT. However, the QPT requires the change in the SC gap symmetry from non-trivial s +- to a trivial s ++ state, which we discuss in this work. Our systematic characterizations of the structure and SC properties associated with the topological QPT provide deep insight into the pressure induced phase diagram in this topological quantum material.

Superconductivity of polar many-valley semiconductors and semimetals

A polar, degenerate semiconductor with two equivalent isotropic valleys, and a semimetal with equal effective masses for the holes and electrons were studied within the framework of a modified Gurevich-Larkin-Firsov model by taking into account the intervalley pairing. Concentration dependencies are found for the critical temperature which agree qualitatively with experimental data for SrTiO3 and BaPb(1-x)Bi(x)O3.

Broadband and Wide Angle Nonreciprocal Thermal Emission from Weyl Semimetal Structures

Nonreciprocal thermal emission is a cutting-edge technology that enables fundamental control over thermal radiation and has exciting applications in thermal energy harvesting. However, so far one of the foremost challenges is making nonreciprocal emission to operate over a broad wavelength range and for multiple angles. In this work, we solve this outstanding problem by proposing three different types of structures always utilizing only one Weyl semimetal (WSM) thin film combined with one or two additional dielectric or metallic layers and terminated by a metallic substrate. First a tradeoff relationship between the magnitude and bandwidth of the thermal nonreciprocity contrast is established based on the thickness of the WSM film. Then, the bandwidth broadening effect is demonstrated via the insertion of a dielectric spacer layer that can also be fine-tuned by varying its thickness. Finally, further control on the resulting strong nonreciprocal thermal radiation is demonstrated by the addition of a thin metallic layer in the proposed few layer designs. The presented composite structures work for a broad frequency range and multiple emission angles, consisting highly advantageous properties to various nonreciprocal thermal radiation applications. Moreover, the proposed designs do not require any patterning and can be experimentally realized by simple deposition fabrication methods. They are expected to aid in the creation of broadband nonreciprocal thermal emitters that can find applications in new energy harvesting devices.

Large negative magnetoresistance in the off-stoichiometric topological semimetal PrSb x Te 2- x

Magnetic topological materials LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanide) have attracted intensive attention because of the presence of interplay between magnetism, topological, and electron correlations depending on the choices of magnetic Ln elements. Varying Sb and Te composition is an efficient approach to control structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. Here we report the composition-dependent properties in PrSb x Te 2-x . We identified the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structure transitions in this material system, and very large negative magnetoresistance in the x = 0.3 composition, which might be ascribed to the coupling between magnetism and transport. Such unusual magnetotransport enables PrSb x Te 2-x topological materials as a promising platform for device applications.
