Computation of canonical correlation and best predictable aspect of future for time series

The canonical correlation between the (infinite) past and future of a stationary time series is shown to be the limit of the canonical correlation between the (infinite) past and (finite) future, and computation of the latter is reduced to a (generalized) eigenvalue problem involving (finite) matrices. This provides a convenient and essentially, finite-dimensional algorithm for computing canonical correlations and components of a time series. An upper bound is conjectured for the largest canonical correlation.

Characterization of medium and high flow series 1500 LARC-TPI

An imidized version of LARC-TPI was developed on NASA's request for use by both aerospace and electronic industries. Two batches of LARC-TPI 1500 Series, consisting of medium-flow and high-flow pellets with different inherent viscosities, are characterized for their dynamic and isothermal melt flow properties at 340 C, mechanical properties of extrudates, extrudate porosity, and degree of crystallinity. The Series shows significantly better melt flow properties than previosly examimed forms of this polymer.

Meteorological conditions during the summer 1986 CITE 2 flight series

An overview of meteorological conditions during the NASA Global Tropospheric Experiment/Chemical Instrumentation Testing and Evaluation (GTE/CITE 2) summer 1986 flight series is presented. Computer-generated isentropic trajectories are used to trace the history of air masses encountered along each aircraft flight path. The synoptic-scale wind fields are depicted based on Montgomery stream function analyses. Time series of aircraft-measured temperature, dew point, ozone, and altitude are shown to depict air mass variability. Observed differences between maritime tropical and maritime polar air masses are discussed.

An introduction to chaotic and random time series analysis

The origin of chaotic behavior and the relation of chaos to randomness are explained. Two mathematical results are described: (1) a representation theorem guarantees the existence of a specific time-domain model for chaos and addresses the relation between chaotic, random, and strictly deterministic processes; (2) a theorem assures that information on the behavior of a physical system in its complete state space can be extracted from time-series data on a single observable. Focus is placed on an important connection between the dynamical state space and an observable time series. These two results lead to a practical deconvolution technique combining standard random process modeling methods with new embedded techniques.

Interpreting the convergence of Lyman series absorption lines

Spectra of quasars at high z often show absorption at the Lyman limit from intervening gas systems at intermediate z having N(H) approx. greater than 10(exp 7) cm(-2). In some circumstances, N(H) can be determined by measuring the strength of the Lyman limit absorption or the damping wings of Lyman - alpha. With a spectrum taken at low wavelength resolution, say, lambda/delta lambda approx. 10(exp 3), it is usually not possible to distinguish individual Lyman series lines near the limit, yet one can still discern how rapidly the average intensity drops off as the limit is approached from the long wavelength side. The purpose here is to point out the information which is available from measurements of this series convergence.

Bio-optical profile data report: Joint Global Ocean Flux Study, Hawaii Ocean Time-Series, HOT-3, R/V Moana Wave, 6-10 January 1989

Time-series measurements of the incident surface downwelling irradiance and vertical profiles of the Bio-optical properties of the ocean have been measured during the third cruise of the Hawaii Ocean Time-Series to the ALOHA site, 22 degrees 56.4 minutes N, 157 degrees 54.6 minutes W, north of the island of Oahu, Hawaii, during the period January 6 to 10, 1989. A summary of these data is presented to permit investigators an overview of the data collected. The data are available in digital form for scientific investigators.

Orthogonal series generalized likelihood ratio test for failure detection and isolation

A new failure detection and isolation algorithm for linear dynamic systems is presented. This algorithm, the Orthogonal Series Generalized Likelihood Ratio (OSGLR) test, is based on the assumption that the failure modes of interest can be represented by truncated series expansions. This assumption leads to a failure detection algorithm with several desirable properties. Computer simulation results are presented for the detection of the failures of actuators and sensors of a C-130 aircraft. The results show that the OSGLR test generally performs as well as the GLR test in terms of time to detect a failure and is more robust to failure mode uncertainty. However, the OSGLR test is also somewhat more sensitive to modeling errors than the GLR test.

Computing the Lyapunov spectrum of a dynamical system from an observed time series

The paper examines the problem of accurately determining, from an observed time series, the Liapunov exponents for the dynamical system generating the data. It is shown that, even with very large data sets, it is clearly advantageous to utilize local neighborhood-to-neighborhood mappings with higher-order Taylor series rather than just local linear maps. This procedure is demonstrated on the Henon and Ikeda maps of the plane itself, the Lorenz system of three ordinary differential equations, and the Mackey-Glass delay differential equation.

Primary reference cell calibrations at SERI - History and methods

The tabular calibration method used at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) for primary reference cells is derived and described in detail. An uncertainty analysis shows that the tabular method should have a total uncertainty of + or - 1.0 percent; data from five years of calibrations are then shown to support this analysis. Results from SERI's tabular method are compared with terrestrial calibrations performed by the NASA Lewis Research Center in the late 1970s.

Assessing the contributions of surface waves and complex rays to far-field Mie scattering by use of the Debye series

The contributions of complex rays and the secondary radiation shed by surface waves to scattering by a dielectric sphere are calculated in the context of the Debye series expansion of the Mie scattering amplitudes. Also, the contributions of geometrical rays are reviewed and compared with the Debye series. Interference effects between surface waves, complex waves, and geometrical waves are calculated, and the possibility of observing these interference effects is discussed. Experimental data supporting the observation of a surface wave-geometrical pattern is presented.
