Optimizing cost-effective and benchmarked industry standards to quantify nutrient bioextraction by seaweed

Interest in the utility of seaweed farms to mitigate coastal eutrophication, or nutrient loading, has grown commensurate with the recent rise of the farmed seaweed industry in the U.S. But economic valuation of this ecosystem service remains elusive in part because of challenges in quantifying this spatiotemporally variable biological process with reproducible and comparable metrics. Regulatory bodies that permit wastewater discharge or lease area for aquaculture farms require water quality testing and reporting of dissolved total nitrogen (N) in nearshore marine environments. These metrics must meet EPA standards for testing and reporting (e.g., Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen - TKN). However, these metrics are inherently highly variable over space and time in dynamic nearshore systems, and expensive to evaluate with sufficient breadth to constrain this variance, creating a critical bottleneck to direct quantification of farmed seaweed net uptake rates in situ.

Conducting Beyond the Standard Model Searches in the MicroBooNE Detector with Machine Learning

MicroBooNE is one of the three neutrino detectors that comprise the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermilab. It utilizes Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) technology to probe the anomalous excess of electron-like events seen by its predecessor, MiniBooNE. Additionally, it provides a rich avenue of study for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories. In the GeV energy regime relevant to MicroBooNE's beam neutrino program, many such theories lead to signatures which produce electron-positron (e+e-) final-states in the detector. While photons can pair produce into e+e- pairs with negligible opening angles, BSM theories often predict e+e- pairs with a broader range of opening angles. Thus, developing a tool that can reliably measure the opening angles of e+e- events is crucial for conducting rigorous BSM studies. However, these e+e- pairs result in topologically complex showers instead of clean tracks, making non-machine learning (ML) based methods such as line-fitting unsuitable for this task. This poster discusses the effectiveness of ML, namely a graph neural network called PointNet++, in accomplishing this goal. Our studies show promising results, with a resolution for the opening angle of 5 or less.

A Review of Regulations, Codes, and Standards for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Bus Use on Airports

This report reviews regulations, codes, and standards to be considered for FCEB operations on airports governing vehicle safety, hydrogen infrastructure, and airport operations. Overall, the review found the existing regulatory framework largely suitable for FCEB operations on airports, with only minor gaps identified pertaining to heavy-duty vehicle fueling, operation and fire safety on airport aprons, and authorization for emergency power use.

Report on Lightning Simulation Standards and Facilities

Lightning strikes pose a significant threat to various forms of infrastructure and electrical equipment. Aircraft and high explosives are of particular interest due to the massive ramifications of the device being compromised due to exposure to lightning damage. However, due to lightning being a varying weather phenomenon, testing a device’s vulnerability to lightning is generally not as simple as simply exposing it to real world lightning. To consistently test a device’s ability to survive the worst-case scenario of lightning exposure, the effects of the most severe lightning strikes must be able to be reproduced consistently and measurably. One such facility for this purpose is the Sandia Lightning Simulator (SLS), which is designed to simulate the current waveform of a severe lightning flash. However, the SLS’s design and age lead to difficulties in its operation and inconsistencies in its output. The methodology used in other lightning simulation facilities may offer information on how to improve the SLS’s operation, or at the very least, expose the SLS’s hidden strengths. This report explores lightning simulation, lightning testing standards, and lightning simulation facilities.

Digital Twin Industry Standards and Opportunities from the Particle Accelerator Community

Digital twins (DTs) are predictive models of a physical system that dynamically update to reflect any changes. This concept was first conceived as early as 1993 by David Gelernter in his speculative non-fiction Mirror Worlds. DTs were coined in 2002 by Michael Grieves and applied to Product Lifecycle Management for manufacturing. Since then, industry has been developing tools to simplify the creation, deployment, and use of digital twins for manufacturing, fleet management, and biological systems. We will recommend industry standard technology and interfaces that we should adopt in the accelerator community. We further identify gaps in this technology to which we can add new capabilities and solutions, which can be expanded for our use cases.

Real-Time Anomaly Detection for Beyond Standard Model Searches in ProtoDUNE Horizontal Drift

This paper summarizes work conducted throughout a SULI internship at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory focused on building an unsupervised machine learning model for real-time anomaly detection in ProtoDUNE Horizontal Drift. Using simulated data, we trained an autoencoder model on a pure cosmic dataset, and evaluated it on both cosmic and neutrino events---making the model an anomaly detector. The goal was to make a model which matches or exceeds the current ADC Simple Window trigger algorithm so that our model can perform at the same rate but provide sensitivity to potential beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) signatures. In the end, we were able to construct a model which slightly exceeds the capabilities of the ADC Simple Window while remaining completely unsupervised, achieving $31.9 \pm 0.2$\% ($26.6 \pm 0.2$\%) $\nu$ efficiency at 5 Hz (2 Hz), a 3.6 (3.2) percentage point increase. Additionally, $17.5 \pm 0.3$\% ($18.3 \pm 0.3$\%) of the events that passed the autoencoder at 5 Hz (2 Hz) were missed by the current trigger algorithm. Future work will investigate alternative normalization methods, including quantile transformation, and evaluate the model on ProtoDUNE-HD detector-glitch data if that data becomes available.

C-HER Metadata Overview: Approach, Standards, and Rigor for the Centralized Health and Exposomic Resource

The Centralized Health and Exposomic Resource (C-HER) unifies environmental, demographic, geographic, and health-related data for exposomic research. The source data differ in format, geographic coverage, time period, resolution, terminology, and documentation. We use a common metadata framework to describe those differences and to record how each data resource has been processed, documented, and ingested. This document relates only to the C-HER metadata framework. It explains the information that is recorded for each resource, the standards used to organize that information, the conditions for metadata completeness, and the relationship between metadata and quality review. It is intended for those who need to understand what C-HER metadata communicates and how it supports appropriate use of the data. It is not an implementation specification or procedure. It does not document the database schema, source code, deployment configuration, transformation algorithms, or dataset-specific QA/QC thresholds. Those materials are maintained separately.
