Development of low cost, high reliability sealing techniques for hybrid microcircuit packages, phase 2

Adhesives were evaluated to determine if they qualify for application to hybrid microcircuit packages. The effort consisted of the following: (1) seal gold-plated Kovar packages with selective adhesives and determine seal integrity after exposure to temperature humidity environments; (2) seal both gold-plated Kovar and ceramic packages with the four best adhesives identified in (1) and determine seal integrity after exposure to MIL-STD-883A test environments; and (3) subject the best adhesive identified in (2) to a 60 C/98% RH environment and determine susceptibility to moisture permeation. Test results are provided.

A hermetic sealing process for large irregularly shaped hybrid microcircuit enclosures

A system for sealing vacuum baked hybrids in a dry inert atmosphere using an overlapping spot resistance weld is described. A unique electrode configuration and fixturing that permits sealing of large and irregularly shaped gold plated Kovar packages to the hermeticity requirements of MIL-STD-883 was discussed. Metallurgical considerations and comparisons to laser sealing were made. Problems encountered during the development and optimization of the process were highlighted. Solutions to plating, fixturing, warpage, weld splatter and cracked bead problems are presented.

High G pyrotechnic shock simulation using metal-to-metal impact

A technique for simulating high g level pyrotechnic shocks is described and the results of applying the technique to obtain the MIL-STD-1540A shock spectrum with a maximum acceleration of 18,000g at 2,000 Hz are presented. Designing the resonant beam and plate on which the test unit is mounted, and generating a proper impulsive load on them, were the essentials of the technique. One dimensional stress wave and Euler equations were employed in the design. A metal pendulum hammer was used to generate the impulsive load.

Interior noise and vibration measurements on operational military helicopters and comparisons with various ride quality criteria

The results of physical measurements of the interior noise and vibration obtained within eight operational military helicopters are presented. The data were extensively analyzed and are presented in the following forms: noise and vibration spectra, overall root-mean-square acceleration levels in three linear axes, peak accelerations at dominant blade passage frequencies, acceleration exceedance data, and overall and ""A'' weighted sound pressure levels. Peak acceleration levels were compared to the ISO 1-hr reduced comfort and fatigue decreased proficiency boundaries and the NASA discomfort criteria. The ""A'' weighted noise levels were compared to the NASA annoyance criteria, and the overall noise spectra were compared to MIL-STD-1294 (""Acoustical Noise Limits in Helicopters''). Specific vibration components at blade passage frequencies for several aircraft exceeded both the ISO reduced comfort boundary and the NASA passenger discomfort criteria. The ""A'' weighted noise levels, corrected for SPH-4 helmet attenuation characteristics, exceeded the NASA annoyance threshold for several aircraft.

Description and planned use of a data distribution evaluation system for fiber optic data buses

A general description of a laboratory data distribution evaluation system (DDES) is given and some plans to use the system. The DDES is a microprocessor-based evaluation system consisting of three identical terminals. The DDES provides the capability for evaluating different system protocols and data word structures by making appropriate software changes, and different transmission medias and modulation schemes by making front-end hardware changes. A data multiplexing standard for fiber optic data transmission which parallels MIL-STD-1553B has proposed four different data modulation schemes. These modulation schemes will be described along with the plans to evaluate each of them. NASA-Langley has also been developing a data distribution approach which utilizes optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). A four-port, four-wavelength WDM system will be described along with the planned use of the DDES to evaluate its performance.

Interactions measurement payload for Shuttle

The Interactions Measurement Payload for Shuttle (IMPS) consisted of engineering experiments to determine the effects of the space environment on projected Air Force space systems. Measurements by IMPS on a polar-orbit Shuttle flight will lead to detailed knowledge of the interaction of the low-altitude polar-auroral environment on materials, equipment and technologies to be used in future large, high-power space systems. The results from the IMPS measurements will provide direct input to MIL-STD design guidelines and test standards that properly account for space-environment effects.

Tailoring dynamic qualification tests for interplanetary spacecraft

It is pointed out that the word 'tailoring' has become quite popular in the past few years. Thus, two recently revised environmental test documents make frequent mention of test tailoring. 'Tailoring' is defined by MIL STD 810D (Environmental Test Methods and Engineering Guidelines). The word refers to 'the process of choosing or altering test procedures, conditions, values, tolerances, measures of failure, etc., to simulate or exaggerate the effects of one or more forcing functions to which an item will be subjected during its life cycle...'. This paper is concerned with requirement level test tailoring. Attention is given to examples of dynamic qualification test tailoring for an interplanetary spacecraft program. These examples are to provide ideas for test tailoring which can be applied to other space flight programs.

Calculating the obscuration ratio due to particle surface contamination

A useful method for the calculation of the obscuration ratio due to particle surface contamination is described. Equations are developed for calculating the obscuration ratio for spherical particles (with diameters greater than 1 micron) and fibers for surfaces where the particle size distribution is either known to be or assumed to be of the form of a MIL-STD-1246A distribution. A simple approximation to the obscuration ratio discrete data is then derived, where the contribution from a single size interval only is treated. This derivation obtains tighter bounds on the approximation error than are provided by the usual direct approach.

Performance measurements of a data link protocol

The end-to-end performance of a program implementing IEEE Std 802.2 logical link control protocol, which provides virtual circuit and datagram service and which constitutes the top sublayer of the data link layer of the reference model for Local Area Networks is studied. The measurements of relative execution times of various functions required in transferring data, over virtual circuits or as datagrams, showed that most of the program execution time is spent in a few relatively low-level functions. One of these functions performs block movement of data in memory, and two other functions provide access to various queues. Based on this result, two alternative versions of the program which move data efficiently were written and measured. In this paper the results of the study are reported and their impact on designing hardware and software systems for a network interface are discussed.

An evaluation plan of bus architectures and protocols using the NASA Ames intelligent redundant actuation system

Means for evaluating data bus architectures and protocols for highly integrated flight control system applications are needed. Described are the criteria and plans to do this by using the NASA/Ames Intelligent Redundant Actuation System (IRAS) experimental set-up. Candidate bus architectures differ from one another in terms of: topology, access control, message transfer schemes, message characteristics, initialization. data flow control, transmission rates, fault tolerance, and time synchronization. The evaluation criteria are developed relative to these features. A preliminary, analytical evaluation of four candidate busses (MIL-STD-1553B, DATAC, Ethernet, and HSIS) is described. A bus must be exercised in a real-time environment to evaluate its dynamic characteristics. A plan for real-time evaluation of these four busses using a combination of hardware and simulation techniques is presented.

SP-100 flight qualification testing assessment

The SP-100 is a compact space power system driven by a nuclear reactor that provides 100 kWe to the user at 200 VDC. The thermal energy generated by the nuclear reactor is converted into electrical energy by passive thermoelectric devices. Various options for tailoring the MIL-STD-1540B guidelines to the SP-100 nuclear power system are discussed. This study aids in selecting the appropriate qualification test program based on the cost, schedule, and test effectiveness of the various options.

Spacecraft particulate contaminant redistribution

This paper describes analyses that were performed in support of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)) particulate contamination control effort. The specific problems addressed include extension of available particle removal data to launch acoustic and random vibration conditions, development of an engineering model for transport of suspended particulates by airflow and in the presence of vehicle acceleration, turbulent diffusion, and migration of particulates over vibrating surfaces, and integration of the various models into a code that could be used to generate contamination level estimates for the HST primary mirror and other critical surfaces for the HST mission phases. The overall redistribution calculations were made assuming a specified initial contaminant distribution in terms of MIL STD 1246A levels, and using predicted vibration data for the various HST surfaces and mission phases. As expected, the effects of airflow were found to be significant, particularly for the larger particles. Particles smaller than about 20 microns did not participate appreciably in the redistribution.

The CAIS 2 Project

The Common APSE Interface Set (CAIS) is a proposed MIL-STD intended to promote the portability of Ada Programming Support Environment (APSE) tools written in Ada. The standardized interfaces define a virtual operating system, from which portable tools derive their basic services, e.g., file management, input/output, communications, and process control. In the Ada world, such a virtual operating system is called a Kernel Ada Programming Support Environment (KAPSE). The CAIS is a standardized interface between KAPSEs and tools. The CAIS has been proposed as a starting point for standard interfaces to be used in the NASA Software Support Environment (SSE) for the Space Station Program. The status of the CAIS standardization effort and plans for further development are described.

Performance of all-metal demountable cryogenic seals at superfluid helium temperatures

Two all-metal demountable cryogenic seals with an outside diameter of 36.6 mm, inside diameter of 27.2 mm, and thickness of 0.51 mm were leak-tested at room temperature (300 K), liquid nitrogen temperature (21 cycles at 77 K), liquid helium temperature (9 cycles at 4.2 K), and susperfluid helium temperature (4 cycles at 1.6 K). Each seal was mounted and demounted for 13 cycles. Thickness measurements at 90 deg intervals along the circumference showed a maximum seal compression of 0.038 mm. Leak-rate measurements at all temperatures showed no detectable leak above the helium background level, typically 0.1 x 10(-9) std-cc/sec, during testing.
