Coloring Tetrahedral Semiconductors: Synthesis and Photoluminescence Enhancement of Ternary II-III 2 -VI 4 Colloidal Nanocrystals

Ternary tetrahedral II-III 2 -VI 4 semiconductors, where II is Zn or Cd, III In or Ga, and VI S, Se, or Te, are of interest in UV radiation detectors in medicine and space physics as well as CO 2 photoreduction under visible light. We synthesize colloidal II-III 2 -VI 4 semiconductor nanocrystals from readily available precursors and ascertain their ternary nature by structural and spectroscopic methods, including 77 Se solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The pyramidally shaped nanocrystals range between 2 and 12 nm and exhibit optical gaps of 2–3.9 eV. In the presence of excess anions on the particle surface, treatment with Lewis acidic, Z-type ligands results in better passivation and enhanced photoluminescence. Electronic structure calculations reveal the most stable, lowest energy polymorphs and coloring patterns. This work will pave the way toward more environmentally friendly, ternary semiconductors for optoelectronics and electrocatalysis.

PNV J00444033+4113068: Early superhumps with 0.7 mag amplitude and non-red color

Abstract In the first days of WZ Sge-type dwarf nova (DN) outbursts, the 2 : 1 resonance induces a spiral arm structure in the accretion disk, which is observed as early superhumps in optical light curves. We reports on our optical observations of an eclipsing WZ Sge-type DN PNV J00444033+4113068 during its 2021 superoutburst using the 3.8 m Seimei telescope and through the Variable Star Network collaboration. The eclipse analysis showed that its orbital period was 0.055425534(1) d. Our observations confirmed early superhumps with an amplitude of 0.7 mag, the largest amplitude among known WZ Sge-type DNe. More interestingly, its early superhumps became the reddest around their secondary minimum, whereas other WZ Sge-type DNe show the reddest color around the early superhump maximum. The spectrum around the peak of the outburst showed two double-peaked emission lines of He ii 4686 Å and Hα with a peak separation of ≥700 km s−1, supporting a very high-inclination system. With the early superhump mapping, the unique profile and color of the early superhump are successfully reproduced by an accretion disk with a vertically extended double arm structure. Therefore, a large amplitude and a unique color behavior of the early superhumps in PNV J00444033+4113068 can be explained by the 2 : 1 resonance model along with other WZ Sge-type DNe.

A Comparison of Emerging Nonfluoropolymer-Based Coextruded PV Backsheets to Industry-Benchmark Technologies

As the photovoltaic (PV) industry is rapidly expanding around the world, there has been an increasing interest in extending the lifespan of PV modules. Concern has also emerged regarding the recyclability of modules and their component materials, including fluoropolymer-based backsheets. Laminated polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) core backsheets have traditionally been used in the PV industry, but new, coextruded polyolefin (PO) backsheets show promise as an improved alternative. In this work, minimodule and coupon samples of seven different backsheets (made of layers including contemporary PET and fluoropolymers, novel PO, and polyamide materials) were run through hygrometric- or UV photolytic-accelerated aging to identify and better understand each material's degradation modes and the backsheets' field reliability. In addition to the artificial aging, the natural weathering methods used in this article are described. The comprehensive set of chemical, mechanical, and structural characterizations at intermittent read points in this article is presented, including: visual appearance and color; gloss; mechanical tensile testing; I-V performance; electroluminescence (EL) imaging; dielectric breakdown; Fourier-transform infrared-chemical structure; X-ray-polymer structure; and differential scanning calorimetry-crystalline content. After 4000 h of aging, a strong correlation occurs between initial physical characteristics (mechanical tensile test) and operating performance (EL and I-V characteristics).

Accelerating Time-Varying Hardware Volume Rendering Using TSP Trees and Color-Based Error Metrics

This paper describes a new hardware volume rendering algorithm for time-varying data. The algorithm uses the Time-Space Partitioning (TSP) tree data structure to identify regions within the data that have spatial or temporal coherence. By using this coherence, the rendering algorithm can improve performance when the volume data is larger than the texture memory capacity by decreasing the amount of textures required. This coherence can also allow improved speed by appropriately rendering flat-shaded polygons instead of textured polygons, and by not rendering transparent regions. To reduce the polygonization overhead caused by the use of the hierarchical data structure, we introduce an optimization method using polygon templates. The paper also introduces new color-based error metrics, which more accurately identify coherent regions compared to the earlier scalar-based metrics. By showing experimental results from runs using different data sets and error metrics, we demonstrate that the new methods give substantial improvements in volume rendering performance.

Massive neutron stars with a color superconducting quark matter core

In this work, we construct the equation of state for high-density neutron star matter at zero temperature using the two-flavor Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as an effective theory of QCD. We build nuclear matter, quark matter, and the mixed phases from the same NJL Lagrangian, which has been used to model free and in-medium hadrons as well as nuclear systems. A focus here is to determine if the same coupling constants in the scalar diquark and vector meson channels, which give a good description of nucleon structure and nuclear matter, can also be used for the color superconducting high-density quark matter phase. We find that this is possible for the scalar diquark (pairing) interaction, but the vector meson interaction has to be reduced so that superconducting quark matter becomes the stable phase at high densities. We compare our equation of state with recent phenomenological parametrizations based on generic stability conditions for neutron stars. We find that the maximum mass of a hybrid star, with a color superconducting quark matter core, exceeds 2.01 ± 0.04 M⊙, which is the value of the recently observed massive neutron star PSR J0348+0432. The mass-radius relation is also consistent with gravitational wave observations (GW170817).

Simulated annealing in networks for computing possible arrangements for red and green cones

Attention is given to network models in which each of the cones of the retina is given a provisional color at random, and then the cones are allowed to determine the colors of their neighbors through an iterative process. A symmetric-structure spin-glass model has allowed arrays to be generated from completely random arrangements of red and green to arrays with approximately as much disorder as the parafoveal cones. Simulated annealing has also been added to the process in an attempt to generate color arrangements with greater regularity and hence more revealing moirepatterns than than the arrangements yielded by quenched spin-glass processes. Attention is given to the perceptual implications of these results.

Fracture trends identified by ERTS-1 imagery in Utah and Nevada

The author has identified the following significant results. Structures clearly traceable through bed rock are considered most reliable. Continuity, however, is frequently traceable through ranges and across adjoining sedimentary basins where changes in drainage, erosion pattern, soil color, or vegetation suggest that the basin sediments are extremely sensitive to underlying structures. Many large and continuous trends, too smeared by erosion to be visible on the ground or from aircraft photos, become quite evident at the scale of the ERTS-1 images. The study was made with little regard for surface geology. The trends have been retraced to separate and unidirectional sets. These are now being related to surface geology, geophysical studies, volcanic and intrusive centers, and areas of mineralization.

Highly Emissive Semi-Ladder-Type Copolymers, Aggregation State, and Solution-Processed Organic Light-Emitting Transistor

An organic light-emitting transistor (OLET) integrates the logic function of a field-effect transistor (FET) with electroluminescence of a light-emitting diode (LED) into a single device. This has the potential to play an important role in smart displays, electrically pumped organic laser, and other flexible electronic devices. For achieving high-performance solution-processed OLET, three semiladder copolymers—TPTI-CC, TPTI-C, and TPTI-F—were developed in this study. It was found that variation in the chemical structure lead to significant differences in energy level, emission color, and intermolecular aggregation. High photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) was obtained in these three polymers. Solution-processed trilayered OLET devices were fabricated, which exhibited strong electroluminescence, balanced charge mobility, and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.8%.

New Structure in the Deuteron

Here, we demonstrate that a paradigm shift from considering the deuteron as a system of a bound proton and neutron to that of a pseudovector system in which we observe a proton and neutron results in the possibility of probing a new “incomplete” P-statelike structure on the light front (LF). This occurs at extremely large internal momenta, which can be achieved in a high energy transfer electrodisintegration of the deuteron. Investigating the deuteron on the light front, where the vacuum fluctuations are suppressed, we found that this new structure, together with the conventional S and D states, is leading order in transferred energy of the reaction and thus not suppressed on the light front. The incompleteness of the observed P state results in a violation of the angular condition that can happen only if the deuteron contains non-nucleonic structures, such as Δ Δ, N*⁢N or hidden color components. We demonstrate that experimentally verifiable signatures of incomplete P states are angular anisotropy of the light front momentum distribution of the nucleon in the deuteron, as well as an enhancement of the tensor polarization strength beyond the S- and D-wave predictions at large internal momenta in the deuteron.

Space shuttle EVA opportunities

A technology assessment is presented on space extravehicular activities (EVA) that will be possible when the space shuttle orbiter is completed and launched. The use of EVA in payload systems design is discussed. Also discussed is space crew training. The role of EVA in connection with the Large Space Telescope and Skylab are described. The value of EVA in constructing structures in space and orbital assembly is examined. Excellent color illustrations are provided which show the proposed EVA functions that were described.

Remote sensing and geologic studies of the planetary crusts

Dark haloed craters and regions of the Moon which were sites of ancient volcanism were remotely sensed as well as KREEP deposits in the Inbrium region. The relationship between geology and geochemistry in the Undarum/Spumans region was also examined. Results are summarized for observations of the Reiner Gamma formation, studies of impact cratering mechanics and processes, spectral variations of asteroidal surfaces, albedo and color variations on Ganymede, and studies of lunar impact structures.

The composition, structure, temperature and dynamics of the upper thermosphere in the polar regions during October to December 1981

Observational data obtained by the Dynamics Explorer-2 (DE-2) spacecraft were compared with global model simulations in order to study the composition, structure, temperature, and dynamics of the upper thermosphere in polar regions during the period October-December 1981. A UCL three-dimensional model was used to simulate the seasonal, diurnal, and geomagnetic response of the neutral thermosphere and to follow the major features of the solar and geomagnetic inputs during the late 1981 period. Overall agreement was obtained between the simulations and the DE-2 data for thermospheric wind structure at high latitudes, and for the combined thermal and compositional structure in both hemispheres. Computer-generated line drawings of the variations in thermospheric structure are given, as well as a series of color graphic illustrations of the DE-2 data.

Narrow-band forbidden O III imaging of the QSO 4C 18.68 - A tidal tail revealed?

The z = 0.313 quasar 4C 18.68 and its surroundings in the light of redshifted forbidden O III were imaged. The QSO appears much more extended than in broad-band images, with a large halo and possibly a faint tidal tail discerned. A broad-band I CCD image taken in 1 - 1.2 arcsec seeing resolves the QSO from a companion galaxy 3.6 arcsec distant, similar to many others seen in the field. It is suggested that the elongated and asymmetric shapes of some QSOs may be due to not-quite-resolved companion galaxies, and that caution be exercised in interpreting luminosity and color profiles as evidence for underlying spiral or elliptical structure.

Probing gluon saturation and nuclear structure in photon-nucleus collisions

We calculate exclusive vector meson photoproduction within the Color Glass Condensate framework in high-energy photon-nucleus scattering probed experimentally in ultra peripheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. When the free parameters are constrained by the γ + p data from HERA, we predict significant nuclear suppression for both the coherent and incoherent photoproduction cross section in the TeV range. Our results indicate that the LHC data prefers even stronger saturation effects at the highest collision energies. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the linear polarization of photons in ulra peripheral collisions generates azimuthal modulations in the decay products of the exclusively produced vector meson. We show how these measurements can probe details of the nuclear geometry, specifically the deformed structure of the uranium nuclei.

Geologic and mineral and water resources investigations in western Colorado, using Skylab EREP data

The author has identified the following significant results. Skylab photographs are superior to ERTS images for photogeologic interpretation, primarily because of improved resolution. Lithologic contacts can be detected consistently better on Skylab S190A photos than on ERTS images. Color photos are best; red and green band photos are somewhat better than color-infrared photos; infrared band photos are worst. All major geologic structures can be recognized on Skylab imagery. Large folds, even those with very gentle flexures, can be mapped accurately and with confidence. Bedding attitudes of only a few degrees are recognized; vertical exaggeration factor is about 2.5X. Mineral deposits in central Colorado may be indicated on Skylab photos by lineaments and color anomalies, but positive identification of these features is not possible. S190A stereo color photography is adequate for defining drainage divides that in turn define the boundaries and distribution of ground water recharge and discharge areas within a basin.
