Accurate prediction of terahertz spectra of molecular crystals of fentanyl and its analogs
Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid pain reliever with a high bioavailability that can be used as prescription anesthetic. Rapid identification via non-contact methods of both known and emerging opioid substances in the fentanyl family help identify the substances and enable rapid medical attention. We apply PBEh-3c method to identify vibrational normal modes from 0.01 to 3 THz in solid fentanyl and its selected analogs. The molecular structure of each fentanyl analog and unique arrangement of H-bonds and dispersion interactions significantly change crystal packing and is subsequently reflected in the THz spectrum. Further, the study of THz spectra of a series of stereoisomers shows that small changes in molecular structure results in distinct crystal packing and significantly alters THz spectra as well. We discuss spectral features of synthetic opioids with higher potency than conventional fentanyl such as ohmefentanyl and sufentanil and discover the pattern of THz spectra of fentanyl analogs.
Toward high-power terahertz radiation sources based on ultrafast lasers
A breakthrough to achieve high-power THz sources is needed. This review covers recent advancements in laser-based THz generation, specifically using ultrafast lasers.
Measurement of femtosecond dynamics of ultrafast electron beams through terahertz compression and time-stamping
Visualizing ultrafast dynamics at the atomic scale requires time-resolved characterization with femtosecond temporal resolution. For fully relativistic electron bunch probes, existing techniques for single-shot ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) are limited by the achievable electron probe bunch length, charge, and timing jitter. We present the first experimental demonstration of dual-fed THz-driven compression and time-stamping that enables electron probes with improved temporal resolution. This technique utilizes two counter-propagating quasi-single-cycle THz pulses generated from two OH-1 organic crystals coupled into an optimized THz compressor structure. We demonstrate electron bunch compression and time-of-arrival jitter suppression by a factor of 3 paving the way toward unique opportunities for UED time-resolved measurements.
Optical-pump–terahertz-probe spectroscopy in high magnetic fields with kHz single-shot detection
We demonstrate optical pump–THz probe (OPTP) spectroscopy with a variable external magnetic field (0–9 T), in which the time-dependent THz signal is measured by echelon-based single-shot detection at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The method reduces data acquisition times by more than an order of magnitude compared to conventional electro-optic sampling using a scanning delay stage. The approach illustrates the wide applicability of the single-shot measurement approach to non-equilibrium systems that are studied through OPTP spectroscopy, especially in cases where parameters such as magnetic field strength (B) or other experimental parameters are varied. We demonstrate the capabilities of our measurement by performing cyclotron resonance experiments in bulk silicon, where we observe B-field-dependent carrier relaxation and distinct relaxation rates for different carrier types. We use a pair of economical linear array detectors to measure 500 time points on each shot, offering an equivalent performance to camera-based detection with possibilities for higher repetition rates.
Shaping the terahertz sound propagation in water under highly directional confinement
Here, we consider the possibility of shaping the high-frequency acoustic propagation in a liquid upon directional confinement. This hypothesis is investigated by inelastic x-ray scattering measurements on water confined in aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes, in which the momentum transfer was either parallel or orthogonal to the confinement axis. The comparison between the spectra measured in these two scattering geometries highlights the anisotropic nature of the dynamic response of directionally confined water, thus potentially inspiring pathways to shape high-frequency sound propagation in isotropic systems. Finally, a Bayesian analysis of measured spectra unravels close similarities in the phonon dispersions of multiwalled nanotubes and graphite.

Characteristic terahertz emissions induced by optically excited collective orbital modes
Here, we study the generation of collective orbital modes, their evolution, and the characteristic nonlinear optical response induced by them in a photoinduced orbital-ordered correlated oxide using real-time simulations based on an interacting multiband tight-binding (TB) model. The d-d optical transitions under femtoseconds light-pulse in an orbital-ordered state excite collective orbital modes, also known as “orbitons”. Consistently incorporating electronic interactions and the interplay between charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in the TB-model provides a clearer understanding of how these factors influence the generation and evolution of collective orbital modes. The dynamics of Jahn-Teller vibrational modes in the photoinduced state modify the intersite orbital interaction, which further amplifies these orbital modes. In the presence of weak ferroelectricity, the excitation of collective orbital modes induces a strong THz oscillatory photocurrent, which is long-lived. This suggests an alternative way to experimentally detect low-energy collective modes through THz-emission studies in the photoinduced state. Our study also elucidates that quasiparticle dynamics in improper ferroelectric oxides can be exploited to achieve highly interesting and nontrivial optoelectronic properties.
