Battery performance of the SKYNET 4A spacecraft during the first six years of on station operation

The SKYNET 4A spacecraft is a three-axis stabilized geostationary earth-orbiting military communications satellite which was launched on 1 Jan. 1990 aboard a Titan 3 launch vehicle. The power subsystem is a twin bus, twin battery semi-regulated system and is equipped with one 28-cell, 35 Ampere-hour battery per bus. The cells were manufactured by Gates Aerospace Batteries of Gainesville, FL, and the batteries were built, tested and integrated by British Aerospace Space Systems Ltd. This paper presents a brief survey of the first six years of on-station operation and the operational battery management strategy that has been adopted. Thermal management constraints have led to an unconventional battery operational regime. However, no sign of degradation is evident and the observed spacecraft battery performance remains nominal.

Analysis of the Erosion of Cubic Centered and Face Centered Metallic Materials [Analyse de L'erosion de Matereaux Metalliques de Structures Cubiques Centree et Face Centree]

A generalized law of erosion, in nondimensional form, is proposed. The aforementioned explicitly gives an account of the nature and the microstructure of the material impacted, the angle of impact of the particles, and their hardness. The erosion behavior of various steels, pig iron, and cast iron is examined as well as the behavior of new ordered intermetallic materials, Fe-25% Al-(Zr, Cr, B). The concern of such alloys in an erosion-corrosion environment is shown.

Medical Aspects of Gemini Extravehicular Activities

The medical aspects of Gemini extravehicular activities are principally concerned with the physiological responses to high workloads, high thermal stresses, and low fatigue tolerance. Analysis of physiological instrumentation data. from extravehicular flights and training operations contributed significantly to the understanding of extra-vehicular workloads and the means of controlling these workloads.

Design of A CVD Reactor for the Deposition of Diamond in A Microgravity Environment

There is a growing body of theoretical and experimental evidence suggesting that the uniformity, rate, adhesion, quality, and other key properties of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond coatings are influenced by the gas mixing kinetics in the thermal plasma environment of the reaction chamber. The implementation of, for example, Microwave Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (MPECVD) process in microgravity has, thus, been suggested. Such a diamond deposition system, which overcomes the limitations of present systems and which is distiguishable from them by the use of high pressure MPECVD and recirculation of the would be effluent hydrogen and carbon, is described. Given the key fact that there is nothing in the effluent of the MPECVD process that is truly a byproduct or 'waste', the system can, at least in principle, lend itself to being closed loop yet dynamic. The exhaust contains hydrogen and carbon species which can be recirculated to the plasma reactor, that is, since there are no unusable reaction byproducts, the effluent can be fed back to the reaction chamber with no detriment, thus allowing deployment in a microgravity environment.
