Heat storage in alloy transformations

The theory of eutectic transformation was examined to find guidelines to the best material combinations to examine. The heats of transformation were measured calorimetrically, and the volume changes of expanding solid mixtures and homogeneous liquid solutions, especially during the transformation between the two states at fixed temperature, were measured by changes in X-ray absorption. Heat flow models appropriate to storage in phase change materials were developed along with efficient calculating procedures so that the relative importance of the problems associated with energy storage density, heat conduction, and similar properties could be assessed.

A decoding failure test for the transform decoder of Reed-Solomon code

Using a finite field transform, a transform decoding algorithm is able to correct erasures as well as errors of any (n,k,d) Reed-Solomon code over the finite field GF(q). A pitfall of transform decoding and how to avoid it are discussed. A simple test is given so that the decoder fails to decode instead of introducing additional errors, whenever the received word contains too many errors and erasures.

Heat storage in alloy transformations

The feasibility of using metal alloys as thermal energy storage media was determined. The following major elements were studied: (1) identification of congruently transforming alloys and thermochemical property measurements; (2) development of a precise and convenient method for measuring volume change during phase transformation and thermal expansion coefficients; (3) development of a numerical modeling routine for calculating heat flow in cylindrical heat exchangers containing phase change materials; and (4) identification of materials that could be used to contain the metal alloys. Several eutectic alloys and ternary intermetallic phases were determined. A method employing X-ray absorption techniques was developed to determine the coefficients of thermal expansion of both the solid and liquid phases and the volume change during phase transformation from data obtained during one continuous experimental test. The method and apparatus are discussed and the experimental results are presented. The development of the numerical modeling method is presented and results are discussed for both salt and metal alloy phase change media.

A parallel-pipeline architecture of the fast polynomial transform for computing a two-dimensional cyclic convolution

It is pointed out that the two-dimensional cyclic convolution is a useful tool for many two-dimensional digital signal processing applications. Two important applications are related to spaceborne high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing and image processing. Nussbaumer and Quandalle (1978) showed that a radix-2 polynomial transform analogous to the conventional radix-2 FFT algorithm can be used to compute a two-dimensional cyclic convolution. On the basis of results reported by Arambepola and Rayner (1979), a radix-2 polynomial transform can be defined to compute a multidimensional cyclic convolution. Truong et al. (1981) used the considered ideas together with the Chinese Theorem to further reduce the complexity of the radix-2 fast polynomial transform (FPT). Reed et al. (1981) demonstrated that such a new FPT algorithm is significantly faster than the FFT algorithm for computing a two-dimensional convolution. In the present investigation, a parallel-pipeline architecture is considered for implementing the FPT developed by Truong et al.

Geometric interpretations of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)

One, two, and three dimensional Discrete Fourier Transforms (DFT) and geometric interpretations of their periodicities are presented. These operators are examined for their relationship with the two sided, continuous Fourier transform. Discrete or continuous transforms of real functions have certain symmetry properties. The symmetries are examined for the one, two, and three dimensional cases. Extension to higher dimension is straight forward.

Optimal Landsat transforms for forest applications

Eleven transformations of data from four Landsat MSS channels were investigated to find if any of the transforms accentuated the separability of natural vegetation classes in regions of varying topographical relief. Attention was given to the divergence analysis and classification accuracy of information content of the eleven transforms and four channels. A useful scaling function was observed with the second eigenvector being the denominator in the divergence values obtained. The second eigenvector was found to reduce the effects of shadowing and differential illumination of vegetation signatures, thereby enhancing the divergence values. The highest accuracies in crop identification were provided by the averages of channels 4, 6, and 7 divided by the second eigenvector.

An efficient coordinate transformation technique for unsteady, transonic aerodynamic analysis of low aspect-ratio wings

An efficient coordinate transformation technique is presented for constructing grids for unsteady, transonic aerodynamic computations for delta-type wings. The original shearing transformation yielded computations that were numerically unstable and this paper discusses the sources of those instabilities. The new shearing transformation yields computations that are stable, fast, and accurate. Comparisons of those two methods are shown for the flow over the F5 wing that demonstrate the new stability. Also, comparisons are made with experimental data that demonstrate the accuracy of the new method. The computations were made by using a time-accurate, finite-difference, alternating-direction-implicit (ADI) algorithm for the transonic small-disturbance potential equation.

A transformation of the two-body problem

A transformation of the differential equations of motion of the two-body problem in the spherical coordinates to oscillator form is derived. It is shown that the independent variable transformation dt/ds = r squared is a transformation which makes the oscillator form possible.

Neoplastic cell transformation by energetic heavy ions and its modification with chemical agents

One of the major deleterious late effects of ionizing radiation is related to the induction of neoplasms. In the present report recent experimental results on neoplastic cell transformation by heavy ions are presented, and possible means to circumvent the carcinogenic effect of space radiation are discussed. Biological effects observed in experiments involving the use of energetic heavy ions accelerated at the Bevalac suggest that many of the biological effects observed in earlier space flight experiments may be due to space radiation, particularly cosmic rays. It is found that the effect of radiation on cell transformation is dose-rate dependent. The frequency of neoplastic transformation for a given dose decreases with a decrease of dose rate of Co-60 gamma rays. It is found that various chemical agents give radiation protection, including DMSO.

A TM Tasseled Cap equivalent transformation for reflectance factor data

A transformation of TM-waveband reflectance-factor data which provides features related as directly as possible to the corresponding TM Tasseled Cap brightness, greennes, and wetness features is presented. The reflectance factor transformation is based on spectrometer data integrated over the prelaunch composite-detector response functions of the Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper. A description, in general terms, of the approach for adjusting the transformation matrix to other types of reflectance factor data (different instrument or band response) is given.

Transformation matrices between non-linear and linear differential equations

In the linearization of systems of non-linear differential equations, those systems which can be exactly transformed into the second order linear differential equation Y"-AY'-BY=0 where Y, Y', and Y" are n x 1 vectors and A and B are constant n x n matrices of real numbers were considered. The 2n x 2n matrix was used to transform the above matrix equation into the first order matrix equation X' = MX. Specially the matrix M and the conditions which will diagonalize or triangularize M were studied. Transformation matrices P and P sub -1 were used to accomplish this diagonalization or triangularization to return to the solution of the second order matrix differential equation system from the first order system.

Image data compression with vector quantization in the transform domain

In this paper, an algorithm is presented for image data compression based upon vector quantization of the two-dimensional discrete cosine transformed coefficients. The ac energies of the transformed blocks are used to classify them into eight different ac classes. The ac coefficients of the transformed blocks of class one are set to zero, while those of classes two through eight are transmitted by seven different code books. The dc coefficients of all eight classes are scalar quantized by an adaptive uniform quantizer. As a result, only 4.5 bits instead of eight bits are required to transmit the dc coefficient with negligible additional degradation. Overall, this algorithm requires approximately 0.75 bits per pixel and gives an average reconstruction error of 7.1.

Earthquake source mechanisms and transform fault tectonics in the Gulf of California

The source parameters of 19 large earthquakes in the Gulf of California were determined from inversions of long-period P and SH waveforms. The goal was to understand the recent slip history of this dominantly transform boundary between the Pacific and North American plates as well as the effect on earthquake characteristics of the transition from young oceanic to continental lithosphere. For the better recorded transform events, the fault strike is resolved to + or - 4 deg at 90 percent confidence. The slip vectors thus provide important constraints on the direction of relative plate motion. Most centroid depths are poorly resolved because of tradeoffs between depth and source time function. On the basis of waveform modeling, historical seismicity, and other factors, it is appropriate to divide the Gulf into three distinct zones. The difference in seismic character among the three zones is likely the result of differing levels of maturity of the processes of rifting, generation of oceanic crust, and formation of stable oceanic transform faults. The mechanism of an earthquake on the Tres Marias Escarpment is characterized by thrust faulting and likely indicates the direction of relative motion between the Rivera and North American plates. This mechanism requires revision in plate velocity models which predict strike slip motion at this location.

Genetic transformation in the methanogen Methanococcus voltae PS

Mutations causing requirements for histidine, purine, and vitamin B12 were obtained in strain PS of Methanococcus voltae (archaebacteria) upon irradiation with UV or gamma rays. The first two mutations were shown to revert at low frequencies and were used to demonstrate the occurrence of transformation with homologous, wild-type DNA. The transformation rates obtained for these presumably chromosomal markers were in the range of 2 to 100 transformants per microgram of DNA. Mutants resistant to 2-bromoethanesulfonate and to 5-methyl-DL-tryptophan were also isolated.

Linear canonical transformations of coherent and squeezed states in the Wigner phase space

It is shown that classical linear canonical transformations are possible in the Wigner phase space. Coherent and squeezed states are shown to be linear canonical transforms of the ground-state harmonic oscillator. It is therefore possible to evaluate the Wigner functions for coherent and squeezed states from that for the harmonic oscillator. Since the group of linear canonical transformations has a subgroup whose algebraic property is the same as that of the (2+1)-dimensional Lorentz group, it may be possible to test certain properties of the Lorentz group using optical devices. A possible experiment to measure the Wigner rotation angle is discussed.

Phase transformations in xerogels of mullite composition

Monophasic and diphasic xerogels have been prepared as precursors for mullite (3Al2O3-2SiO2). Monophasic xerogel was synthesized from tetraethyl orthosilicate and aluminum nitrate nanohydrate and the diphasic xerogel from colloidal suspension of silica and boehmite. The chemical and structural evolutions, as a function of thermal treatment, in these two types of sol-gel derived mullite precursor powders have been characterized by DTA, TGA, X-ray diffraction, SEM and infrared spectroscopy. Monophasic xerogel transforms to an Al-Si spinel from an amorphous structure at approximately 980 C. The spinel then changes into mullite on further heating. Diphasic xerogel forms mullite at approximately 1360 C. The components of the diphasic powder react independently up to the point of mullite formation. The transformation in the monophasic powder occurs rapidly and yields strongly crystalline mullite with no other phases present. The diphasic powder, however, transforms rather slowly and contains remnants of the starting materials (alpha-Al2O3, cristobalite) even after heating at high temperatures for long times (1600 C, 6 hr). The diphasic powder could be sintered to high density but not the monophasic powder in spite of its molecular level homogeneity.

Transformation based endorsement systems

Evidential reasoning techniques classically represent support for a hypothesis by a numeric value or an evidential interval. The combination of support is performed by an arithmetic rule which often requires restrictions to be placed on the set of possibilities. These assumptions usually require the hypotheses to be exhausitive and mutually exclusive. Endorsement based classification systems represent support for the alternatives symbolically rather than numerically. A framework for constructing endorsement systems is presented in which transformations are defined to generate and update the knowledge base. The interaction of the knowledge base and transformations produces a non-monotonic reasoning system. Two endorsement based reasoning systems are presented to demonstrate the flexibility of the transformational approach for reasoning with ambiguous and inconsistent information.

Joint-transform correlator systems using deformable-mirror spatial light modulators

Two joint-transform correlator systems based on deformable-mirror-device (DMD) spatial light modulators and CCD video cameras are described. The system designs provide for real-time correlation between video-formatted input scenes and stored reference images. The DMD light modulators are used exclusively for inputting data in the optical stages of these systems, and the CCD cameras are used to provide the critical square-law detection required in joint-transform achitectures. Experimental verification of the functionality of these DMD/CCD joint-transform systems is also presented.
