K 2 CoS 2 : A two-dimensional in-plane antiferromagnetic insulator

Recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials has brought magnetism to the flatland and opened up exciting opportunities for the exploration of fundamental physics as well as novel device applications. Here, we predict a thermodynamically stable 2D magnetic material, ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$, which retains its in-plane bulk antiferromagnetic (AFM) order down to the monolayer and bilayer limits. Magnetic moments $(2.5{{\mu}}_{B}/\mathrm{Co})$ are found to form a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetically ordered chain of Co atoms. The nonmagnetic electronic spectrum of the monolayer film is found to host flatbands and van Hove singularities, which play a key role in stabilizing the magnetic ground state. Based on classical Monte Carlo simulations, we estimate the Neel temperature for the AFM monolayer to be ${\approx}15\mathrm{K}$. Our study demonstrates that ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}{\mathrm{CoS}}_{2}$ hosts a robust AFM state which persists from the monolayer limit to the bulk material.

Isotropic parallel antiferromagnetism in the magnetic field induced charge-ordered state of $\mathrm{Sm Ru_4 P_{12}}$ caused by $p - f$ hybridization

Nature of the field-induced charge-ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu 4 P 12 has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the nonresonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field (m AF ∥ H), giving rise to large and small moment sites around which the P 12 and Ru cage contract and expand, respectively. This is associated with the formation of the staggered ordering of the Γ 7 -like and Γ 8 -like crystal-field states, providing a strong piece of evidence for the charge order. PND was also performed to obtain complementary and unambiguous conclusion. In addition, isotropic and continuous nature of phase II is demonstrated by the field-direction invariance of the interference spectrum in RXD. Finally, crucial role of the p-f hybridization is shown by resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the P K edge (1s↔3p), where we detected a resonance due to the spin polarized 3p orbitals reflecting the AFM order of Sm.

Effects of filling, strain, and electric field on the Néel vector in antiferromagnetic CrSb

CrSb is a layered antiferromagnet (AFM) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, a high Néel temperature, and large spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which makes it interesting for AFM spintronic applications. To elucidate the various mechanisms of Néel vector control, the effects of strain, band filling, and electric field on the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of bulk and thin-film CrSb are determined and analyzed using density functional theory. The MAE of the bulk crystal is large (1.2 meV per unit cell). Due to the significant ionic nature of the Cr-Sb bond, finite slabs are strongly affected by end termination. Truncation of the bulk crystal to a thin film with one surface terminated with Cr and the other surface terminated with Sb breaks inversion symmetry, creates a large charge dipole and average electric field across the film, and breaks spin degeneracy, such that the thin film becomes a ferrimagnet. The MAE is reduced such that its sign can be switched with realistic strain, and the large SOC gives rise to an intrinsic voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy. A slab terminated on both faces with Cr remains a compensated AFM, but with the compensation occurring nonlocally between mirror-symmetric Cr pairs. In-plane alignment of the moments is preferred, the magnitude of the MAE remains large, similar to that of the bulk, and it is relatively insensitive to filling.

Magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO single crystal studied by neutron and x-ray scattering

We report the magnetic ordering and structural distortion in PrFeAsO crystals, the basis compound for one of the oxypnictide superconductors, using high-resolution x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). We find the structural tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition at T-S = 147K, the AFM phase transition of the Fe moments at T-Fe = 72K, and the Pr AFM phase transition at T-Pr = 21K. Combined high-resolution neutron diffraction and XRMS show unambiguously that the Pr moments point parallel to the longer orthorhombic a axis and order antiferromagnetically along the a axis but ferromagnetically along the b and c directions in the stripelike AFM order. The temperature-dependent magnetic order parameter of the Pr moments shows no evidence for a reorientation of moments.

Magnetic order of tetragonal CuO ultrathin films

Here, we present a detailed low-energy muon spin rotation and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) investigation of the magnetic structure in ultrathin tetragonal (T)-CuO films. The measured muon-spin polarization decay indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a transition temperature higher than 200 K. The XMCD signal obtained around the CuL 2,3 edges indicates the presence of pinned Cu 2+ moments that are parallel to the sample surface, and additionally, isotropic paramagnetic moments. The pinning of some of the Cu moments is caused by an AFM ordering consisting of moments that lie most likely in plane of the film. Moreover, pinned moments show a larger orbital magnetic moment contribution with an approximate ratio of m orb /m spin =1.5, indicating that these spins are located at sites with reduced symmetry. Some fractions of the pinned moments remain pinned from an AFM background even at 360 K, indicating that T N >360K. We propose a simple model that explains these experimental findings, showing that the magnetic order of the T-CuO ultrathin films differs from the theoretical predictions.

Direct imaging of electrical switching of antiferromagnetic Néel order in α-Fe 2 O 3 epitaxial films

In this work, we report the direct observation of switching of the Néel vector of antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains in response to electrical pulses in micron-scale Pt/α-Fe 2 O 3 Hall bars using photoemission electron microscopy. Current pulses lead to reversible and repeatable switching with the current direction determining the final state, consistent with Hall effect experiments that probe only the spatially averaged response. Current pulses also produce irreversible changes in domain structure, in and even outside the current path. In both cases only a fraction of the domains switch in response to pulses. Furthermore, the analysis of images taken with different x-ray polarizations shows that the AFM Néel order has an out-of-plane component in equilibrium that is important to consider in analyzing the switching data. These results show that—in addition to effects associated with spin-orbit torques from the Pt layer, which can produce reversible switching—changes in AFM order can be induced by purely thermal effects.

Strain-tunable metamagnetic critical endpoint in Mott insulating rare-earth titanates

Rare-earth titanates are Mott insulators whose magnetic ground state—antiferromagnetic (AFM) or ferromagnetic (FM)—can be tuned by the radius of the rare-earth element. We combine phenomenology and first-principles calculations to shed light on the generic magnetic phase diagram of a chemically substituted titanate on the rare-earth site that interpolates between an AFM and a FM state. Octahedral rotations present in these perovskites cause the AFM order to acquire a small FM component—and vice-versa—removing any multicritical point from the phase diagram. However, for a wide parameter range, a first-order metamagnetic transition line terminating at a critical endpoint survives inside the magnetically ordered phase. Like the liquid-gas transition, a Widom line emerges from the endpoint, characterized by enhanced fluctuations. In contrast to metallic FMs, this metamagnetic transition involves two symmetry-equivalent and insulating canted spin states. Moreover, instead of a magnetic field, we show that uniaxial strain can be used to tune this transition to zero temperature, inducing a quantum critical endpoint.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in semiconducting EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals

Eu-based Zintl-phase materials EuA 2 Pn 2 (A = Mg, In, Cd, Zn; Pn = Bi, Sb, As, P) have generated significant recent interest owing to the complex interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, we investigated the crystallographic, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered Zintlphase single crystals of EuMg 2 Sb 2 with the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 crystal structure (space group $P\bar{3}m1$). Electrical resistivity measurements complemented with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations find an activated behavior with intrinsic conductivity at high temperatures indicating a semiconducting electronic ground state with a narrow energy gap of 370 meV. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field heat capacity measurements indicate that the compound undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at the Néel temperature T N = 8.0(2) K. Here, zero-field neutron-diffraction measurements reveal that the AFM ordering is A-type where the Eu spins (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) arranged in ab-plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane and the Eu spins in adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically. Eu-moment reorientation within the ab planes in the trigonal AFM domains associated with a very weak inplane magnetic anisotropy is also evident below T N at low fields < 0.05 T. Although isostructural semimetallic EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to host Dirac surface states, the observation of narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in EuMg 2 Sb 2 implies a strong role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in tuning the electronic states of these materials. Our DFT studies also suggest, besides the SOC, the more electronegative and smaller Sb than Bi shifts the low-lying conduction bands along the Γ-A direction to higher energy, resulting in an indirect bulk band gap between the Γ and M points for EuMg 2 Sb 2 .

Spin excitations in the kagome-lattice metallic antiferromagnet Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn

Kagome-lattice materials have attracted tremendous interest due to the broad prospect for seeking superconductivity, quantum spin liquid states, and topological electronic structures. Among them, the transition-metal kagome lattices are high-profile objects for the combination of topological properties, rich magnetism, and multiple-orbital physics. Here we report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin dynamics of a kagome-lattice antiferromagnetic metal Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn. Although the magnetic excitations can be observed up to ~250 meV, well-defined spin waves are only identified below ~90 meV and can be modeled using Heisenberg exchange with ferromagnetic in-plane nearest-neighbor coupling J 1 , in-plane next-nearest-neighbor coupling J 2 , and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling J c under linear spin-wave theory. Above ~90 meV, the spin waves enter the itinerant Stoner continuum and become highly damped particle-hole excitations. At the K point of the Brillouin zone, we reveal a possible band crossing of the spin wave, which indicates a potential Dirac magnon. Finally, our results uncover the evolution of the spin excitations from the planar AFM state to the axial AFM state in Fe 0.89 Co 0.11 Sn, solve the magnetic Hamiltonian for both states, and confirm the significant influence of the itinerant magnetism on the spin excitations.

Low-field magnetic anomalies in single crystals of the A-type square-lattice antiferromagnet EuGa 4

The body-centered-tetragonal antiferromagnet EuGa 4 was recently identified as a Weyl nodal-line semimetal that exhibits the topological Hall effect below its reported antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature T N = 15 – 16.5 K which we find to be T N = 16.4 ( 2 ) K. The Eu +2 ions are located at the corners and body centers of the unit cells. EuGa 4 exhibits A-type antiferromagnetic order below T N , where the Eu 2+ spin-7/2 moments are ferromagnetically aligned in the ab plane with the Eu moments in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis aligned antiferromagnetically. Low-field magnetization versus field M(H ab ) data at T = 2 K with the field aligned in the ab plane are reported that exhibit anomalous positive curvature up to a critical field H c1 at which a second-order transition occurs with H c1 ≈ 0.85 kOe for H∥ [1,1,0] and ≈ 4.8 kOe for H∥[1,0,0]. For larger fields, the linear behavior M ab = χ(T N ) H a b is followed until the critical field H c is reached at which all moments become aligned with the applied field. A theory is formulated for T = 0 K that fits the observed M(H ab ) behavior at T = 2 K well, where domains of A -type AFM order with fourfold rotational symmetry occur in the AFM state in zero field. The moments in the four domains reorient to become almost perpendicular to H ab at H c1 , followed by increasing canting of all moments toward the field with increasing field up to H c which is reported to be 71 kOe. A first-order transition in M(H ab ) at H ab = H c1 is predicted by the theory for T = 0 K when H ab is at a small angle from the [1,0,0] direction.

Introducing the monoclinic polymorph of the honeycomb magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

Recent theoretical studies have suggested that the low-energy Hamiltonian of honeycomb cobaltate systems could be dominated by anisotropic Kitaev interactions. Motivated by the theory, a honeycomb layered material Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 with a hexagonal unit cell has been studied and found to exhibit antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at 27 K with two spin reorientation transitions at 15 and 5 K. Here we report a monoclinic polymorph of Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 , also with honeycomb layered structure but with a single AFM transition at 9.6 K and without spin reorientation transitions at lower temperatures. Here, using neutron diffraction, we identify an in-plane zigzag AFM order in the ground state with the spins canted out of the honeycomb planes and ferromagnetically coupled between them. The zigzag order is suppressed by a magnetic field of 6T. The lower critical temperature and field, positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and out-of-plane canting of spins in the monoclinic Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 suggest enhanced frustration in this polymorph compared to the hexagonal one.

Block Mott insulating state induced by next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the S = 3 2 zigzag chain BaCoTe 2 O 7

Quasi-one-dimensional correlated electronic multiorbital systems with either ladder or chain geometries continue attracting considerable interest due to their complex electronic phases arising from the interplay of the hopping matrix, the crystal-field splitting, the electronic correlations (Hubbard repulsion U and Hund coupling J H ), and strong quantum fluctuations. Recently, the intriguing cobalt zigzag chain system BaCoTe 2 ⁢ O 7 , with electronic density n=7, was prepared experimentally. Here, we systematically study the electronic and magnetic properties of this quasi-one-dimensional compound from the theoretical perspective. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, strongly anisotropic one-dimensional electronic Co 3⁢d bands were found near the Fermi level. By evaluating the relevant hopping amplitudes, we provide the magnitude and origin of the nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping matrices in BaCoTe 2 ⁢ O 7 . With this information, we constructed a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model for this zigzag chain system, and studied two cases: with only a NN hopping matrix, and with NN plus NNN hopping matrices. Introducing the Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group method, we constructed the ground-state phase diagram. A robust staggered ↑ - ↓ - ↑ - ↓ antiferromagnetic (AFM) region was found when only the NN hopping matrix in the chain direction was employed. However, for the realistic case where the NNN hopping matrix is also included, the dominant state becomes instead a block AFM ↑ - ↑ - ↓ - ↓ order, in agreement with experiments. The system displays Mott insulator characteristics with three half-filled orbitals, when the block AFM order is stable. In conclusion, our results for BaCoTe 2 ⁢O 7 provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this zigzag one-dimensional chain and related materials.

Spin-selective evolution of the Zhang-Rice state in binary transition metal oxide MnO(001) film

Here, the Zhang-Rice (ZR) state is a strongly hybridized bound state formed by transition-metal and oxygen atoms. The spin fluctuations within the ZR state are known to play an important role in high-T c superconductivity in cuprates. Here, we employ a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and ab initio embedded dynamical mean-field theory (eDMFT) to investigate the influence of magnetic ordering on the spectral characteristics of the valence band and Mn 2⁢p core-level in MnO (001) ultrathin films. Our results demonstrate that a complex spin-selective evolution of Mn 3⁢d-O2⁢p hybridization develops due to the long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. This hybridization significantly alters the spectral shape and weight of the ZR state. Specifically, in the AFM phase, we observed the sharpening of the ZR state and band folding with the periodicity of the AFM unit cell of MnO(001). We also demonstrated a strong connection between the spectral evolution of the ZR state and the non-local screening channels of the photoexcited core holes. Further, our detailed temperature-dependent study reveals the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations that exist at much higher temperatures than Neel temperature (T N ) and shows the evolution of the ZR state across the magnetic transitions and its implication to the core-hole screening in 3⁢d binary transition metal oxides.

Magnetic interactions and excitations in SrMnSb 2

The magnetic interactions in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Dirac semimetal candidate SrMnSb 2 are investigated using ab initio linear response theory and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Our calculations reveal that the first two nearest in-plane couplings (J 1 and J 2 ) are both AFM in nature, indicating a significant degree of spin frustration, which aligns with experimental observations. The orbital resolution of exchange interactions shows that J 1 and J 2 are dominated by direct and superexchange, respectively. In a broader context, a rigid-band model suggests that electron doping fills the minority spin channel and results in a decrease in the AFM coupling strength for both J 1 and J 2 . To better compare with INS measurements, we calculate the spin-wave spectra within a linear spin-wave theory, utilizing the computed exchange parameters. Although the calculated spin-wave spectra somewhat overestimate the magnon bandwidth, they exhibit overall good agreement with measurements from INS experiments.

Repulsive Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in the quasi-one-dimensional alternating spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnet NaVOPO 4

Here, we probe the magnetic field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state in the bond-alternating spin1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) chain compound NaVOPO 4 using thermodynamic as well as local μSR and 31 P NMR probes down to mK temperatures in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The μSR and NMR relaxation rates in the gapless TLL regime decay slowly following characteristic power-law behavior, enabling us to directly determine the interaction parameter K as a function of the magnetic field. These estimates are crosschecked using magnetization and specific heat data. The field-dependent K lies in the range of 0.4 < K < 1 and indicates the repulsive nature of interactions between the spinless fermions, in line with the theoretical predictions. This renders NaVOPO 4 the first experimental realization of TLL with repulsive fermionic interactions in hitherto studied S = 1/2 bond-alternating AFM-AFM chain compounds.

Observation of Magnon Polarons in a Uniaxial Antiferromagnetic Insulator

Magnon polarons, a type of hybridized excitations between magnons and phonons, were first reported in yttrium iron garnet as anomalies in the spin Seebeck effect responses. Here, we report an observation of antiferromagnetic (AFM) magnon polarons in a uniaxial AFM insulator Cr 2 O 3 . Despite the relatively higher energy of magnon than that of the acoustic phonons, near the spin-flop transition of ~ 6 T , the left-handed magnon spectrum shifts downward to hybridize with the acoustic phonons to form AFM magnon polarons, which can also be probed by the spin Seebeck effect. The spin Seebeck signal is founded to be enhanced due to the magnon polarons at low temperatures.

Magnon Landau Levels and Spin Responses in Antiferromagnets

We study gauge fields produced by gradients of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and propose a model of an AFM topological insulator of magnons. In the long wavelength limit, the Landau levels induced by the inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction exhibit relativistic physics described by the Klein-Gordon equation. The spin Nernst response due to the formation of magnonic Landau levels is compared to similar topological responses in skyrmion and vortex-antivortex crystal phases of AFM insulators. Here, our studies show that AFM insulators exhibit rich physics associated with topological magnon excitations.

Total Angular Momentum Dichroism of the Terahertz Vortex Beams at the Antiferromagnetic Resonances

Here, terahertz vortex beams with different superposition of the orbital angular momentum $\textit{l}$ = ± 1, ±2, ±3, and ±4 and spin angular momentum σ = ±1 were used to study antiferromagnetic (AFM) resonances in TbFe 3 (BO 3 ) 4 and Ni 3 TeO 6 single crystals. In both materials we observed a strong vortex beam dichroism for the AFM resonances that are split in external magnetic field. The magnitude of the vortex dichroism is comparable to that for conventional circular dichroism due to σ. The selection rules at the AFM resonances are governed by the total angular momentum of the vortex beam: $\textit{j}$ = σ + $\textit{l}$. In particular, for $\textit{l}$ = ±2, ±3, and ±4 the sign of $\textit{l}$ is shown to dominate over that for conventional circular polarization σ.
