Addressing Electric Aviation Infrastructure Cybersecurity Implementation

This technical report evaluates key considerations of cybersecurity systems in preparation for the electrification of both legacy and new aviation services. The objectives are to consider the landscape of components and interconnections, review sensitivities and the criticality of data and operations, and aim to understand the applicability of existing best practices or the need for new ones associated with the cybersecurity of electric charging systems for the aviation sector. Given the early stages of electric aviation deployment, developers have the opportunity to plan and integrate cybersecurity strategies into the complete electric aviation system during the initial stages of design and procurement and will benefit from employing a framework for continuous cybersecurity monitoring. This paper presents initial considerations of key cybersecurity strategies and their application to forthcoming electric aviation systems.

Overview of Potential Hazards in Electric Aircraft Charging Infrastructure

With increasing efforts in electrification of Advanced Air Mobility and electric aircraft, there is a growing need to install new infrastructure to support them. This report highlights potential hazards (non exhaustive) that the installation must be aware of and be prepared to mitigate with increased electrical equipment on site. The hazards can be due to natural causes as well as non natural causes. The report aims to provide starting guidelines for awareness of these hazards and to help plan for mitigation of the same.

Federal Aviation Administration Vertiport Electrical Infrastructure Study

In this detailed analysis, the authors assess the charging infrastructure needed for the deployment of advanced air mobility involving electrified vertical take-off and landing technologies. The report covers four research areas: (1) Identifying charging infrastructure requirements for existing facilities based on flight operational parameters, potential use cases, charging strategy, and other constraints. (2) Assessing sites on power availability to meet charging demand, the impact on grid infrastructure, potential hazards, and cybersecurity needs, and using technoeconomic analysis to identify opportunities for onsite distributed energy resources, primarily solar photovoltaics and battery energy storage systems. (3) Calculating greenhouse gas emission based on total energy consumption attributable to each site. (4) Analyzing the job and economic development impact for sites adopting new infrastructure.

Building a Sustainable Aviation Brain Trust: Key Insights From the 2022 NREL Partner Forum

Cross-sector collaboration is key for guiding the large, complex aviation industry over the emissions peak and quickly down the slope to net-zero - that theme was repeated regularly during the two-day 2022 NREL Partner Forum. With an expanding global economy, more people than ever want the convenience of air travel. That has made aviation the fastest-growing transportation sector, as well as a rising source of carbon emissions. How can the industry serve its customers while charting a course to net-zero in line with climate goals? Interest and momentum from public and private sectors are mounting to answer that question, a backdrop for the Partner Forum. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) brought 200 attendees to the whiteboard to find common goals, align interests, understand technologies, and discuss steps for safely and seamlessly decarbonizing aviation. This document captures the tenor of the conversations and provides a summary of the 1.5 day event for those who were not able to attend or who have interest in this area.

Pathways to a Sustainable Aviation Ecosystem: Sustainable Aviation for Developing Economies

In the face of climate change, developing countries are innovating to rapidly lower emissions and enable resilient, secure, and just energy transitions. Transportation accounts for roughly one- fifth of global carbon dioxide emissions, making mobility a key focus area for the international community, and is also critical in supporting social equity and human well-being. At the intersection of economic development, mobility, and clean energy, sustainable aviation systems can help simultaneously deliver key climate and clean energy goals to support advanced and decarbonized energy systems.
