Runaway electron plateau current profile reconstruction from synchrotron imaging and Ar-II line polarization angle measurements in DIII-D

Abstract Current profile reconstructions are obtained for high current ( I p ≃ 550 kA) post-disruption runaway electron (RE) plateau plasmas in DIII-D. Two novel methods of measuring the RE current profile in high-current RE plateaus are introduced and compared: localization of the q = 2 rational surface using visible synchrotron emission (SE) imaging and the measurement of the polarization angle of line-integrated Ar-II line emission. The two methods are found to be consistent with each other within the data uncertainties. Different simulations of the RE current profile are compared with the measurements: the toroidal fluid RE model is found to best fit the data, within the measurement uncertainties. In addition to introducing two novel methods to measure the RE current profile and validating present simulation capabilities, this work demonstrates that instabilities can grow at q = 2 and q = 1 surfaces without necessarily causing a RE final loss instability. Numerical simulations are also presented to elucidate the role of these instabilities on synchrotron emission.

Towards modelling AR Sco: generalized particle dynamics and strong radiation-reaction regimes

Numerical simulations of relativistic plasmas have become more feasible, popular, and crucial for various astrophysical sources with the availability of computational resources. The necessity for high-accuracy particle dynamics is especially highlighted in pulsar modelling due to the extreme associated electromagnetic fields and particle Lorentz factors. Including the radiation-reaction force in the particle dynamics adds even more complexity to the problem, but is crucial for such extreme astrophysical sources. We have also realized the need for such modelling concerning magnetic mirroring and particle injection models proposed for AR Sco, the first white dwarf pulsar. This paper demonstrates the benefits of using higher-order explicit numerical integrators with adaptive time-step methods to solve the full particle dynamics with radiation-reaction forces included. We show that for standard test scenarios, namely various combinations of uniform E- and B-fields and a static dipole B-field, the schemes we use are equivalent to and in extreme field cases outperform standard symplectic integrators in accuracy. We show that the higher-order schemes have massive computational time improvements due to the adaptive time-steps we implement, especially in non-uniform field scenarios and included radiation reaction where the particle gyro-radius rapidly changes. When balancing accuracy and computational time, we identified the adaptive Dormand–Prince eighth-order scheme to be ideal for our use cases. The schemes we use maintain accuracy and stability in describing the particle dynamics and we indicate how a charged particle enters radiation-reaction equilibrium and conforms to the analytical Aristotelian Electrodynamics expectations.

Weak-charge radius of 40 Ar: From CREX constraints to CE⁢𝜈⁢NS sensitivity

Despite significant theoretical efforts, the CREX-PREX dilemma remains unresolved, preventing the reliable prediction of neutron (or weak-charge) radii that, besides their intrinsic nuclear-structure interest, often serve to quantify the impact of nuclear uncertainties in searches for new physics. Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering is a clean and attractive portal to new physics, whose sensitivity may be impacted by such nuclear uncertainties. In this paper I use CREX as the basis, together with a strong calcium-argon correlation, to provide a robust baseline for the weak radius of 40 Ar : 𝑅$^{40}_{wk}$ = 3.452 ± 0.028 (stat) ± 0.022 (syst) fm. Here, the weak radius of argon is an observable, highly relevant to ongoing and future liquid-argon campaigns, that encodes the loss of coherence at small momentum transfers.

Nanoscale dynamics during self-organized ion beam patterning of Si. I. Ar + bombardment

X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) is used to investigate the fluctuation dynamics during self- organized nanopatterning of silicon by Ar + bombardment at 65° polar angle. Rich structure is observed in the development of the correlation dynamics as seen in the evolving correlation time τ(q || ) and fluctuation relaxation exponent n(q || ). Furthermore, on length scales of the ripple structure, local structure becomes ever more long lived as coarsening progresses. In addition, τ (q || ) develops a peak on length scales corresponding to the ripple wavelength. As patterning progresses, correlation times become asymmetric between the positive and negative directions, suggesting the possibility of different dynamics on the slopes facing toward and away from the ion beam. Relaxation exponents show evolution from linear dynamics at early times to compressed exponential relaxation at low wave numbers and stretched exponential relaxation at high wave numbers. Compressed exponential behavior is reminiscent of stress relaxation processes observed in glasses.

In-beam 𝛾-ray spectroscopy toward the proton dripline: The curious case of 32 Ar

High-resolution in-beam 𝛾-ray spectroscopy was used to study excited states of the neutron-deficient nucleus 32 Ar populated in fast-beam induced four- and six-nucleon removal reactions from 36,38 Ca. One new 𝛾-ray transition and indications for an additional two were found, allowing for a glimpse at the level scheme beyond the 2$^{+}_{1}$ state. The nature of the new 1900⁢(4)-keV transition is discussed in the context of the known energy spectrum of the mirror nucleus 32 Si and shell-model calculations using the FSU and SDPF-M cross-shell effective interactions. Its resulting parent state at 3767⁢(5)⁢keV, more than 1.3 MeV above the proton separation energy, is tentatively assigned to have mixed 𝑠⁢𝑑-shell and 2p-2h character. It might either be the mirror of the 𝐽 𝜋 = 2$^{+}_{2}$ state of 32 Si at 4230.8⁢(8)⁢keV, but with a decay branch favoring a transition to the 2$^{+}_{2}$ over the ground state, or the mirror of the 4983.9⁢(11)-keV state with quantum numbers 0 + . Furthermore, the resulting mirror-energy differences of −473⁢(5) and −1218⁢(5)⁢keV are both sizable when compared to systematics; in the latter case the result would, in fact, be among the largest reported to date in the nuclear chart or suggest the potential existence of an additional, hitherto unidentified, low-lying 0 + state of 32 Si.

Measurement of the π - -Ar total hadronic cross section at the LArIAT experiment

We present the first measurement of the negative pion total hadronic cross section on argon in a restricted phase space, which we performed at the Liquid Argon In A Testbeam (LArIAT) experiment. All hadronic reaction channels, as well as hadronic elastic interactions with scattering angle greater than 5° are included. The pions have kinetic energies in the range 100–700 MeV and are produced by a beam of charged particles impinging on a solid target at the Fermilab test beam facility. LArIAT employs a 0.24 ton active mass liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) to measure the pion hadronic interactions. For this measurement, LArIAT has developed the “thin slice method,” a new technique to measure cross sections with LArTPCs. While moderately higher, our measurement of the π - -Ar total hadronic cross section is generally in agreement with the geant4 prediction.

Spectra and mean multiplicities of $π^-$ in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V / c beam momenta measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of π - mesons produced in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V /c. Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Pulse-shape discrimination against low-energy Ar-39 beta decays in liquid argon with 4.5 tonne-years of DEAP-3600 data

The DEAP-3600 detector searches for the scintillation signal from dark matter particles scattering on a 3.3 tonne liquid argon target. The largest background comes from 39 Ar beta decays and is suppressed using pulse-shape discrimination (PSD). We use two types of PSD estimator: the prompt-fraction, which considers the fraction of the scintillation signal in a narrow and a wide time window around the event peak, and the log-likelihood-ratio, which compares the observed photon arrival times to a signal and a background model. We furthermore use two algorithms to determine the number of photons detected at a given time: (1) simply dividing the charge of each PMT pulse by the mean single-photoelectron charge, and (2) a likelihood analysis that considers the probability to detect a certain number of photons at a given time, based on a model for the scintillation pulse shape and for afterpulsing in the light detectors. The prompt-fraction performs approximately as well as the log-likelihood-ratio PSD algorithm if the photon detection times are not biased by detector effects. We explain this result using a model for the information carried by scintillation photons as a function of the time when they are detected.

Search for the critical point of strongly-interacting matter in $^{40}$Ar + $^{45}$Sc collisions at 150A Ge V /c using scaled factorial moments of protons

The critical point of dense, strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS in $^{40}$Ar + $^{45}$Sc collisions at 150A Ge V /c. The dependence of second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distribution on the number of subdivisions of transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis is performed using both transverse momentum and cumulative transverse momentum. For the first time, statistically independent data sets are used for each subdivision number. The obtained results do not indicate any statistically significant intermittency pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated proton pairs and the power of the correlation function is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model developed for this purpose.

Measurements of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ spectra in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at 13A to 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ produced in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$. The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm $/$\pi ^\pm $ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm $ transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $p+p$ and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

Search for a critical point of strongly-interacting matter in central \(^{40}\)Ar + \(^{45}\)Sc collisions at 13 A–75 A GeV/c beam momentum

The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central \(^{40}\)Ar + \(^{45}\)Sc collisions at 13 A, 19 A, 30 A, 40 A, and 75 A GeV/c. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

Multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in central Ar+Sc interactions at 13 A , 19 A , 30 A , 40 A , 75 A , and 150 A GeV/c beam momenta measured by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

This paper presents results on multiplicity fluctuations of positively and negatively charged hadrons as well as net-electric charge fluctuations measured in central Ar+Sc interactions at beam momenta 13 A , 19 A , 30 A , 40 A , 75 A , and 150 A GeV/c. The fluctuation analysis is one of the tools to search for the predicted critical point of strongly interacting matter. Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified using cumulant ratios. In most instances, multiplicity and net-charge distributions appear narrower than the corresponding Poisson or Skellam distributions. Cumulant ratios are compared with the EPOS1.99 model predictions, which provide a qualitative description that aligns with observations for positively and negatively charged particles. The obtained results are also compared to earlier NA61/SHINE results from inelastic p+p interactions in the same analysis acceptance.

AmeriFlux AR-Cel CELPA Mar Chiquita BA

This is the AmeriFlux version of the carbon flux data for the site AR-Cel CELPA Mar Chiquita BA. Site Description - The site is located at a mid-latitude South Atlantic pristine salt marsh. It occupies 43 km2 of an extended marginal flat surrounding a 25 km long brackish lagoon connected with the Argentine Sea through an inlet channel. The small tide amplitude prevents extensive waterlogging with salt water. Unlike other Northern Hemisphere salt marshes regularly flooded by daily tides, Mar Chiquita soaks throughout the winter with approximately a 10 cm freshwater layer coming from rains, and during summer high temperatures and high evapotranspiration dry the soil, producing a thin salt crust on the surface. Another significant difference is that the canopy persists throughout the year without dying out, due to the lack of snowfall or below-freezing winter temperatures.
