Adhesion of Titanium Coatings on Additively Manufactured Stainless Steel [Slides]

Additive manufacturing can improve fuel cell development by increasing design development speed, enabling complex designs through more flexible fabrication, and reducing wasted excess material. The goal of the project is to develop a process for strongly adhering a coating of titanium to additively manufactured stainless steel.

Dynamic Polymer Networks for On Demand Degradable Adhesives, Scaffolds, and Templates (Full Technical Report)

This feasibility study was motivated by a need for alternative mandrel materials to meet the next generation of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ablator capsules. In response, a new polymer material based on reversible covalent bonds was proposed, with the objective to design thermosets to withstand elevated temperatures (140-200 degrees Celsius) while also being thermally degradable on-demand via controlled decomposition at temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius. A series of cyclopentadiene (Cp) containing thermosets were designed and synthesized to evaluate curing, reversibility and degradability via controlled retro-Diels Alder reactions using Cp-cycloaddition adducts as crosslinks. Ultimately, the current iteration of materials and strategy pursued in this study was assessed as impractical for meeting the needs and objectives of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) target fabrication program.

Milestone Report on Microstructure of Irradiated Sensors and Coupling Adhesive Bonds

This report describes the ORNL aspects of an NSUF project in collaboration between EPRI, ORNL, and NCSU. Preliminary characterizations at ORNL LAMDA laboratory on piezoelectric sensors and bonds before and after NCSU PULSTAR reactor irradiation. Five pre-irradiation and seven post-irradiation samples have been examined by scanning electron microscopy and related methods so far. Samples consisted of (Pb,Bi)(Sc,Ti)O 3 or LiNbO 3 ceramics. Bonding layers consisted of epoxy, zirconia, alumina, aluminosilicate, or a complex soda-lime type slurry.

Epoxy Sealant Self-leveling and Adhesion Test Report

The Hanford tank farms have 149 single shell tanks which were built between 1943 - 1964, and 28 double-shell tanks (DSTs) which were built between 1968 – 1986 (Tank Farms, 2020) which contain radioactive and chemical mixed waste. Many of the tanks have leaked, including DST AY-102 (Waste Tank Summary Report, 2023). As a result, methods of repairing or reinforcing double-shell storage tanks are being evaluated.
