Partially celestial states and their scattering amplitudes

We study representations of the Poincaré group that have a privileged transformation law along a p -dimensional hyperplane, and uncover their associated spinor-helicity variables in D spacetime dimensions. Our novel representations generalize the recently introduced celestial states and transform as conformal primaries of S O ( p , 1 ) , the symmetry group of the p -hyperplane. We will refer to our generalized states as “partially celestial.” Following Wigner’s method, we find the induced representations, including spin degrees of freedom. Defining generalized spinor-helicity variables for every D and p , we are able to construct the little group covariant part of partially celestial amplitudes. Finally, we briefly examine the application of the pairwise little group to partially celestial states with mutually nonlocal charges. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Conserved currents in five-dimensional proposals for lattice chiral gauge theories

We apply the Grabowska-Kaplan framework, originally proposed for lattice chiral gauge theories, to QCD. We show that the resulting theory contains a conserved and gauge invariant singlet axial current, both on the lattice and in the continuum limit. This must give rise to a difference with QCD, with the simplest possibility being a superfluous Nambu-Goldstone boson in the physical spectrum not present in QCD. We find a similar unwanted conserved current in the recent “disk” formalism, this time limiting ourselves to the continuum formulation. A similar problem is expected when either of these formalisms is used for its original goal of constructing lattice chiral gauge theories. Finally we discuss a conjecture about the possible dynamics that might be associated with the unwanted conserved current and the fate of ‘t Hooft vertices. BPZ equations for higher degenerate fields and nonperturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations

In the two-dimensional Liouville conformal field theory, correlation functions involving a degenerate field satisfy partial differential equations due to the decoupling of the null descendant field. On the other hand, the instanton partition function of a four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric theory in the Ω -background at a special point of the parameter space also satisfies a partial differential equation resulting from the constraints of the gauge field configurations. This partial differential equation can be proved using the nonperturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations. We show for the next-to-simplest case that the partial differential equations obtained from two different perspectives can be identified, thereby confirming an assertion of the Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield/conformal field theory correspondence. Emergent 1-form symmetries

We explore the necessary conditions for 1-form symmetries to emerge in the long-distance limit when they are explicitly broken at short distances. A minimal requirement is that there exist operators which become topological at long distances and that these operators have nontrivial correlation functions. These criteria are obeyed when the would-be emergent symmetry is spontaneously broken, or is involved in ’t Hooft anomalies. On the other hand, confinement, i.e. a phase with unbroken 1-form symmetry, is nearly incompatible with the emergence of 1-form symmetries. We comment on some implications of our results for QCD as well as the idea of Higgs-confinement continuity. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Conformal correlators on the Lorentzian torus

The general form of a 2D conformal field theory (CFT) correlator on a Euclidean Riemann surface, Lorentzian plane or Lorentzian cylinder is well known. This paper describes the general form of 2- and 3-point CFT correlators on the Lorentzian torus LT 2 which arises as the conformal boundary of the group manifold SL ( 2 , R ) ≃ AdS 3 / Z . We consider only generic points, thereby omitting an analysis of contact terms, which already exhibits a surprisingly rich structure. The results are relevant to celestial holography, for which the LT 2 at the boundary of Klein space is the home of the putative celestial CFT. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

U(1) fields from qubits: An approach via D-theory algebra

A new quantum link microstructure was proposed for the lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Hamiltonian, replacing the Wilson gauge links with a bilinear of fermionic qubits, later generalized to D-theory. This formalism provides a general framework for building lattice field theory algorithms for quantum computing. We focus mostly on the simplest case of a quantum rotor for a single compact U(1) field. We also make some progress for non-Abelian setups, making it clear that the ideas developed in the U(1) case extend to other groups. These in turn are building blocks for 1 + 0 -dimensional ( 1 + 0 -D) matrix models, 1 + 1 -D sigma models and non-Abelian gauge theories in 2 + 1 and 3 + 1 dimensions. By introducing multiple flavors for the U(1) field, where the flavor symmetry is gauged, we can efficiently approach the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space of the quantum O(2) rotor with increasing flavors. The emphasis of the method is on preserving the symplectic algebra exchanging fermionic qubits by sigma matrices (or hard bosons) and developing a formal strategy capable of generalization to a SU ( 3 ) field for lattice QCD and other non-Abelian 1 + 1 -D sigma models or 3 + 1 -D gauge theories. For U(1), we discuss briefly the qubit algorithms for the study of the discrete 1 + 1 -D sine-Gordon equation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Constraining neutrino-DM interactions with Milky Way dwarf spheroidals and supernova neutrinos

We constrain the neutrino-dark matter cross section using properties of the dark matter density profiles of Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The constraint arises from core-collapse supernova neutrinos scattering on dark matter as a form of energy injection, allowing the transformation of the dark matter density profile from a cusped profile to a flatter profile. We assume a standard cosmology of dark energy and cold, collisionless, and non-self-interacting dark matter. By requiring that the dark matter cores do not lose too much mass or overshoot constraints from stellar kinematics, we place an upper limit on the cross section of σ ν − DM ( E ν = 15 MeV , m χ ≲ 130 GeV ) ≈ 3.4 × 10 − 23 cm 2 and σ ν − DM ( E ν = 15 MeV , m χ ≳ 130 GeV ) ≈ 3.2 × 10 − 27 ( m χ 1 GeV ) 2 cm 2 , which is stronger than previous bounds for these energies. Consideration of baryonic feedback or host galaxy effects on the dark matter profile can strengthen this constraint. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Scale and conformal invariance on (A)dS spacetimes

We examine the question of scale versus conformal invariance on maximally symmetric curved backgrounds and study general two-derivative conformally invariant free theories of vectors and tensors. For spacetime dimension D > 4 , these conformal theories can be diagonalized into standard massive fields in which unbroken conformal symmetry nontrivially mixes components of different spins. In D = 4 , the tensor case becomes a conformal theory mixing a partially massless spin-2 field with a massless spin-1 field. For massless linearized gravity in D = 4 , we confirm through direct calculation that correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators take the conformally invariant form, despite the absence of standard conformal symmetry at the level of the action. Generalized entanglement capacity of de Sitter space

Near horizons, quantum fields of low spin exhibit densities of states that behave asymptotically like 1 + 1 dimensional conformal field theories. In effective field theory, imposing some short-distance cutoff, one can compute thermodynamic quantities associated with the horizon, and the leading cutoff sensitivity of the heat capacity is found to equal to the leading cutoff sensitivity of the entropy. One can also compute contributions to the thermodynamic quantities from the gravitational path integral. For the cosmological horizon of the static patch of de Sitter space, a natural conjecture for the relevant heat capacity is shown to equal the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. These observations allow us to extend the well-known notion of the generalized entropy to a generalized heat capacity for the static patch of de Sitter (dS). The finiteness of the entropy and the nonvanishing of the generalized heat capacity suggest it is useful to think about dS as a state in a finite dimensional quantum gravity model that is not maximally uncertain. Photoproduction of η c , b near threshold

We analyze the photoproduction of η c , b off a proton in the threshold region, in terms of C-odd gluonic correlations in the off-forward proton matrix element. Near threshold, the skewness is large, leading to a production amplitude that is dominated by four C-odd twist-3 gluon GPDs. We use the QCD instanton vacuum to estimate these C-odd contributions in the proton. The results are used to estimate the differential cross sections for coherent photoproduction of η c , b in the threshold region, at current electron facilities. Resolving the ultracollinear paradox with effective field theory

Naive intuition about scale decoupling breaks down in the presence of fermion masses. Kinematic enhancements can greatly extend the range where one needs to keep a finite mass in calculations to obtain a correct result at even the O ( 1 ) level. Treating a light fermion as massive though, leads to a known but somewhat obscure paradox, a seeming leading-order sensitivity to an arbitrarily small mass. We show how a proper formulation in effective field theory not only resolves the physical conundrum but also answers the very practical question of when fermion masses are required. This has important implications for the development of shower Monte Carlo event generators above the weak scale. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Geometric quantum states beyond the AdS/CFT correspondence

We characterize the quantum states dual to entanglement wedges in arbitrary spacetimes, in settings where the matter entropy can be neglected compared to the geometric entropy. In AdS/CFT, such states obey special entropy inequalities known as the holographic entropy cone. In particular, the mutual information of CFT subregions is monogamous (MMI). We extend this result to arbitrary spacetimes, using a recent proposal for the generalized entanglement wedge e ( a ) of a gravitating region a . Given independent input regions a , b , and c , we prove MMI: Area [ e ( a ) ] + Area [ e ( b ) ] + Area [ e ( c ) ] − Area [ e ( a b ) ] − Area [ e ( b c ) ] − Area [ e ( c a ) ] + Area [ e ( a b c ) ] ≤ 0 . We expect that the full holographic entropy cone can be extended to arbitrary spacetimes using similar methods. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Threshold photoproduction of η c and η b using holographic QCD

We discuss the possibility that threshold photoproduction of η c , b may be sensitive to the pseudovector 1 + − glueball exchange. We use the holographic construction to identify the pseudovector glueball with the Kalb-Ramond field, minimally coupled to bulk Dirac fermions. We derive the holographic C-odd form factor and its respective charge radius. Using the pertinent Witten diagrams, we derive and analyze the differential photoproduction cross section for η c , b in the threshold regime, including the interference from the dual bulk photon exchange with manifest vector dominance. The possibility of measuring this process at current and future electron facilities is discussed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Constituent model of light hybrid meson decays

A model of light hybrid mesons and their strong decays is developed. The model employs a gluonic quasiparticle to describe low energy gluodynamics and uses the QCD Hamiltonian in Coulomb gauge to guide the construction of states and decay amplitudes. We compute the partial widths of the twelve low lying isovector and vector hybrids. Implications of these results on hybrid searches are also made, with the chief conclusions being that direct observation of the vector states will be difficult, that a hybrid π ( 1800 ) has distinctive decay characteristics, a narrow η ( 1900 ) hybrid should exist, an η 1 ( 1750 ) should be sought, and that the exotic nature of J P C = 2 − + hybrid mesons should be discernible with sufficient data. We argue that the isovector π 2 hybrid has been discovered, giving a total of four possible hybrid mesons, π 1 ( 1600 ) , η 1 ( 1855 ) , π ( 1800 ) , and π 2 ( 2360 ) , which appear to be filling out the low lying hybrid supermultiplet in the expected fashion. Leveraging neural control variates for enhanced precision in lattice field theory

Results obtained with stochastic methods have an inherent uncertainty due to the finite number of samples that can be achieved in practice. In lattice QCD this problem is particularly salient in some observables like, for instance, observables involving one or more baryons and it is the main problem preventing the calculation of nuclear forces from first principles. The method of control variables has been used extensively in statistics and it amounts to computing the expectation value of the difference between the observable of interest and another observable whose average is known to be zero but is correlated with the observable of interest. Recently, control variates methods emerged as a promising solution in the context of lattice field theories. In our current study, instead of relying on an educated guess to determine the control variate, we utilize a neural network to parametrize this function. Using 1 + 1 dimensional scalar field theory as a testbed, we demonstrate that this neural network approach yields substantial improvements. Notably, our findings indicate that the neural network ansatz is particularly effective in the strong coupling regime. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Stress inside the pion in holographic light-front QCD

In this work, we propose a method to compute the gravitational form factor D ( Q 2 ) in holographic QCD by exploiting the remarkable correspondence between semiclassical light-front QCD and semiclassical field theories in wrapped spacetime in five dimensions. The use of light-front holography bridges physics at large Q 2 as attained in light-front QCD and physics at small Q 2 where the coupling to scalar and tensor fields, e.g. glueballs, are dominant. As an application, we compute the D -term for the pion and compare the results with recent lattice simulations. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
