Superalloy resources: Supply and availability

Over the past several decades there have been shortages of strategic materials because of our near total import dependence on such metals as chromium, cobalt, and tantalum. In response to the continued vulnerability of U.S. superalloy producers to disruptions in resource supplies, NASA has undertaken a program to address alternatives to the super-alloys containing significant quantities of the strategic materials such as chromium, cobalt, niobium, and tantalum. The research program called Conservation of Strategic Aerospace Materials (COSAM) focuses on substitution, processing, and alternate materials to achieve its goals. In addition to NASA Lewis Research Center, universities and industry play an important role in the COSAM Program. This paper defines what is meant by strategic materials in the aerospace community, presents a strategic materials index, and reviews the resource supply and availability picture from the U.S. point of view. In addition, research results from the COSAM Program are highlighted and future directions for the use of low strategic material alloys or alternate materials are discussed.

Defining the minimum temporal and spatial scales available from a new 72-month Nimbus-7 Earth Radiation Budget climate data set

Scale factors and assumptions which were applied in calculations of global radiation budget parameters based on ERB data are discussed. The study was performed to examine the relationship between the composite global ERB map that can be generated every six days using all available data and the actual average global ERB. The wide field of view ERB instrument functioned for the first 19 months of the Nimbus-7 life, and furnished sufficient data for calculating actual ERB averages. The composite was most accurate in regions with the least variation in radiation budget.

Availability and cost estimate of a high naphthene, modified aviation turbine fuel

Information from an Air Force study was used to determine the potential availability and cost of a modified conventional fuel with a naphthene content which could have a thermal stability near that of JP-7 for high-speed civil transports. Results showed sufficient capacity for a fuel made of a blend of 50 percent naphthenic straight run kerosene and 50 percent hydrocracked product, assuming a near-term requirement of 210,000 BBL per day. Fuel cost would be as low as 62.5 to 64.5 cents per gallon, assuming 20 dollars per barrel for crude.

Assessment of commercially available and experimental hydrogen electrodes

NASA Lewis Research Center is currently involved in advanced cell component development for nickel-hydrogen cells and batteries. Long life, high energy density, improved performance and reliability are required for energy storage systems in future space missions. Commercially available as well as experimental hydrogen electrodes were assessed and compared to the state-of-the-art hydrogen electrode that is currently being used in nickel-hydrogen batteries. These electrodes were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and standard electrochemical polarization measurements. Production variables such as Teflon content and platinum catalyst loading were considered in order to assess various hydrogen electrodes with regard to the different electrode manufacturing processes.

The use of available potential energy to evaluate the impact of satellite data on numerical model analysis during FGGE

To evaluate the effect of the FGGE satellite observing system, the following two data sets were compared by examining the available potential energy (APE) and extratropical cyclone activity within the entire global domain during the first Special Observing Period: (1) the complete FGGE IIIb set, which incorporates satellite soundings, and (2) a NOSAT set which incorporates only conventional data. The time series of the daily total APEs indicate that NOSAT values are larger than the FGGE values, although in the Northern Hemisphere the differences are negligible. Analyses of cyclone scale features revealed only minor differences between the Northern Hemisphere FGGE and NOSAT analyses. On the other hand, substantial differences were revealed in the two Southern Hemisphere analyses, where the satellite soundings apparently add detail to the FGGE set.

The effects of simulated space environmental parameters on six commercially available composite materials

The effects of simulated space environmental parameters on microdamage induced by the environment in a series of commercially available graphite-fiber-reinforced composite materials were determined. Composites with both thermoset and thermoplastic resin systems were studied. Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) exposures were simulated by thermal cycling; geosynchronous-orbit (GEO) exposures were simulated by electron irradiation plus thermal cycling. The thermal cycling temperature range was -250 F to either 200 F or 150 F. The upper limits of the thermal cycles were different to ensure that an individual composite material was not cycled above its glass transition temperature. Material response was characterized through assessment of the induced microcracking and its influence on mechanical property changes at both room temperature and -250 F. Microdamage was induced in both thermoset and thermoplastic advanced composite materials exposed to the simulated LEO environment. However, a 350 F cure single-phase toughened epoxy composite was not damaged during exposure to the LEO environment. The simuated GEO environment produced microdamage in all materials tested.

An evidential approach to problem solving when a large number of knowledge systems is available

Some recent problems are no longer formulated in terms of imprecise facts, missing data or inadequate measuring devices. Instead, questions pertaining to knowledge and information itself arise and can be phrased independently of any particular area of knowledge. The problem considered in the present work is how to model a problem solver that is trying to find the answer to some query. The problem solver has access to a large number of knowledge systems that specialize in diverse features. In this context, feature means an indicator of what the possibilities for the answer are. The knowledge systems should not be accessed more than once, in order to have truly independent sources of information. Moreover, these systems are allowed to run in parallel. Since access might be expensive, it is necessary to construct a management policy for accessing these knowledge systems. To help in the access policy, some control knowledge systems are available. Control knowledge systems have knowledge about the performance parameters status of the knowledge systems. In order to carry out the double goal of estimating what units to access and to answer the given query, diverse pieces of evidence must be fused. The Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence is used to pool the knowledge bases.

A model of the photosynthetically available and usable irradiance in the sea

A theoretical model describing the depth dependence of the solar irradiance available to phytoplankton for photosynthesis is developed for waters classified as Case I by Jerlov (1976). The techniques used to account for the effects of incident solar irradiance, pigment concentration, and the spectral diffuse attentuation coefficient are described; an expression for the photosynthetically usable irradiance is derived; and particular attention is given to the specific diffuse absorption coefficient for chlorophyll (Morel, 1978). The relationships among the primary model parameters are shown in graphs.

A study of cloud-generated radiative heating and its generation of available potential energy. I - Theoretical background. II - Results for a climatological zonal mean January

The effect of radiative heating and cooling by clouds on the available potential energy (APE) is theoretically discussed. It is shown that the cloud radiative contribution to the generation of APE is determined by the net cloud radiative heating and the efficiency factor, which is a function of the temperature distribution of the atmosphere. Results are presented for low and middle cloud effects for three atmospheric layers. Cloud radiative heating is found to be a single function of cloud optical thickness for all classes designed in terms of cloud top heights and optical thickness. Low clouds at low latitudes destroy APE an midclouds generate APE. A concept is developed to relate the cloud radiative heating to cloud heights and optical depths. Cloud-generated radiative heating is computed for January zonal mean conditions for low and midclouds. For both cases, the strongest influence is found in the low troposphere, with marked differences in signs and magnitudes. At extratropical latitudes, both cloud classes generate net radiative cooling. In the tropics, the effect of low cloud changes from net cooling to the net heating as the optical thickness increases, and midclouds cause net heating. A mechanism is described whereby this dependence produces a strong positive feedback effect on the development of SST anomalies in the tropical oceans.

Assessing the impact of different satellite retrieval methods on forecast available potential energy

The effects of the inclusion of satellite temperature retrieval data, and of different satellite retrieval methods, on forecasts made with the NASA Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres (GLA) fourth-order model were investigated using, as the parameter, the available potential energy (APE) in its isentropic form. Calculation of the APE were used to study the differences in the forecast sets both globally and in the Northern Hemisphere during 72-h forecast period. The analysis data sets used for the forecasts included one containing the NESDIS TIROS-N retrievals, the GLA retrievals using the physical inversion method, and a third, which did not contain satellite data, used as a control; two data sets, with and without satellite data, were used for verification. For all three data sets, the Northern Hemisphere values for the total APE showed an increase throughout the forecast period, mostly due to an increase in the zonal component, in contrast to the verification sets, which showed a steady level of total APE.

Availability of a library of infrared (2.1-25.0 microns) mineral spectra

All previously published libraries of infrared mineral spectra are in the form of transmitance. Reflectance spectra are, however, more useful for remote sensing and some potential laboratory applications, such as the use of an infrared microscope for mineral identification on polished sections. This note points out that construction of a new library of infrared (2.1-25.0 microns) mineral spectra is in progress. Both transmittance and reflectance measurements of a selection of 63 different, well-characterized minerals have been published to date. These data are available in both hard copy and digital form.

Minimizing selective availability error on Topex GPS measurements

GPS measurements made at Topex/Poseidon and the accompanying ground tracking sites will be affected by the selective availability. Although in principle the effects may be removed by differencing between receivers observing the same GPS satellites, this requires accurate synchronization of all receiver clocks. In the case of Topex/Poseidon application, there are two sources of imperfect clock synchronization. The first and larger is due to the constantly drifting clock onboard Topex, which may cause a residual effect as large as 10 cm on Topex carrier phase and 1 m on Topex pseudorange. The second is due to light-time differences between receivers observing the same GPS satellites, which may amount to a few mm error. In this paper a data reduction scheme which incorporates a low-order polynomial interpolation and carrier phase smoothing on pseudorange acquired at Topex and ground receivers is described; a simulation analysis is given demonstrating the effectiveness of the scheme for reducing the GPS S/A effects; and comparison with other schemes is discussed.

Modeling Selective Availability of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System

As the development of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) continues, there will increasingly be the need for a software centered signal model. This model must accurately generate the observed pseudorange which would typically be encountered. The observed pseudorange varies from the true geometric (slant) range due to range measurement errors. Errors in range measurement stem from a variety of hardware and environment factors. These errors are classified as either deterministic or random and, where appropriate, their models are summarized. Of particular interest is the model for Selective Availability which is derived from actual GPS data. The procedure for the determination of this model, known as the System Identification Theory, is briefly outlined. The synthesis of these error sources into the final signal model is given along with simulation results.
