Tradeoffs in single stage drift step recovery diode generator design

A high-voltage generator of nanosecond pulses utilizing a drift step recovery diode (DSRD) as an opening switch in the compression section is designed to operate at peak voltages of 4 kV and repetition rates of 2 MHz in burst mode at reduced voltages. The generator is used to perform empirical studies on the output metrics of a DSRD generator with a focus on matching the circuit of the reverse current loop parameters and DSRD to the load. The dynamic impedance introduced by nonlinear elements in the DSRD was investigated with respect to the driving circuit by varying the number of DSRDs connected in series. Experimental results indicate that optimization of the driving circuit for the DSRD is key to minimizing losses and achieving optimal pulse compression. Furthermore, the results also indicate trends in DSRD performance as larger storage inductances and longer pumping times are used, limiting the pulse compression capabilities of a single stage DSRD generator.

Electric field driven domain wall dynamics in BaTiO 3 nanoparticles

We report a detailed investigation into the response of single BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanocrystals under applied electric fields (E-field) using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging. Our study reveals pronounced domain wall migration and expansion of a sample measure under applied electric field. The changes are most prominent at the surface of the nanocrystal, where the lack of external strain allows greater domain wall mobility. The observed domain shifts are correlated to the strength and orientation of the applied E-field, following a side-by-side domain model from Suzana []. Notably, we identified a critical electric field strength of 3 MV/m, which leads to irreversible structural changes, suggesting plastic deformation. The findings highlight how surface effects and intrinsic defects contribute to the enhanced dielectric properties of BTO at the nanoscale, in contrast to bulk materials, where strain limits domain mobility. These findings deepen our understanding of nanoscale dielectric behavior and inform the design of advanced nanoelectronic devices. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

A Comparison of CdS and Zn(O,S) Buffer Layers in (Ag,Cu)(In,Ga)Se2 Solar Cells

Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 -based solar cells typically use a C dS buffer layer, even though its relatively low bandgap causes parasitic absorption. While alternatives to CdS have been explored in other studies, limited results have been shown for Ag-alloyed CIGS (ACIGS). In this study, ACIGS solar cells with both CdS and Zn(O,S) buffer layers were fabricated and compared for solar cell performance. The Zn(O,S) buffer slightly improved J sc through reduced absorption, although surface optimization is necessary. The Zn(O,S) ACIGS also had improved FF through reduced series resistance and ideality factor, which could be improved further through optimization. However, the Voc in the Zn(O,S) samples was reduced, likely due to increased bulk and front interface recombination. This study shows the promise of Zn(O,S) as a buffer layer in ACIGS solar cells and suggests pathways for further improvement.

A Novel Framework for Performance Evaluation and Design Optimization of PCM Embedded Heat Exchangers for the Built Environment

This research sheds light on the performance evaluation and design optimization of PCM-HXs for the built environment, addressing several barriers to practical issues to PCM-HX commercialization such as modeling aspects (i.e., modeling expertise and computational / time investment, etc.), manufacturing aspects (i.e., at-scale manufacturing, cost assessments, etc.) and experimental performance assessment (i.e., reliable experimental data, assessment of multiple PCM-working fluid combinations, etc.). We present a novel, comprehensive, and experimentally-validated design optimization framework for PCM-HXs capable of simulating any PCM-HX geometry with reasonable accuracy and significant computational time savings when compared to traditional CFD-based design practices. The framework was validated for a wide range of PCM-HX configurations, including a design optimization for a domestic hot water heater application where TES partially replaces electrical heating input. The resulting PCM-HXs were found to deliver 34-68% of the total daily hot water supply with only 5-10% package volume increase from the water heater, thus within U.S. DOE targets for TES systems. To identify the most promising HXs for PCM applications, first-order geometry and cost analyses were conducted based on off-the-shelf HX products. As part of this work, 9 PCM-HX prototypes were manufactured using additive and conventional manufacturing methods. Detailed economy-of-scale assessments were conducted for the most promising PCM-HXs and were found to have a good outlook for the next 5-10 years. The PCM-HX design optimization framework was validated through comprehensive in-house experimental testing using newly-developed PCM-to-fluid test facilities. In total,10 total in-house component-level experiments were conducted using these prototypes, including 9 with water and 1 with refrigerant (R410A) as the working fluid. It was found that the framework can successfully predict experimental thermal-hydraulic performance within ±10-20% the first time without manual design changes, eliminating the need for time-consuming and expensive prototyping efforts as part of the design process. As part of this work, a publicly-available PCM web tool was released which includes a PCM property database (531 PCMs) and PCM-HX modeling tool to assist the design community on common PCM-HX use-cases, e.g., single/multiple flow path(s) fluid-to-PCM and air-to-fluid-to-PCM configurations (https://ceeeweb.umd.edu/pcmapp/). This work will accelerate the design and time to market for next generation PCM-HXs.

Nanosecond Breakdown Characteristics of C 4 F 7 N and Various Mixtures at Pressures Above 1 Atmosphere in Comparison with SF 6

This report evaluates the pulsed breakdown performance of C 4 F 7 N under a 6.8 kV/ns voltage excitation. The pulsed dielectric strength of C 4 F 7 N is compared to SF 6 in the same experimental setup, and it is found that C 4 F 7 N concentrations of 50% or greater are required to achieve a dielectric strength greater than or equal to SF 6 . Pure C 4 F 7 N demonstrated higher electric field hold-off for longer time periods and less statistical variance under pulsed conditions when compared to SF 6 . Mixtures of 50%C 4 F 7 N with N 2 or CO 2 as buffer gases showed no appreciable difference in pulsed dielectric strength.
