Circuit with a Switch for Charging a Battery in a Battery Capacitor Circuit

A circuit for charging a battery combined with a capacitor includes a power supply adapted to be connected to the capacitor, and the battery. The circuit includes an electronic switch connected to the power supply. The electronic switch is responsive to switch between a conducting state to allow current and a non-conducting state to prevent current flow. The circuit includes a control device connected to the switch and is operable to generate a control signal to continuously switch the electronic switch between the conducting and non-conducting states to charge the battery.

Capacitors Would Help Protect Against Hypervelocity Impacts

A proposal investigates alternatives to the present bumper method of protecting spacecraft against impacts of meteoroids and orbital debris. The proposed method is based on a British high-voltage-capacitance technique for protecting armored vehicles against shaped-charge warheads. A shield, according to the proposal, would include a bare metal outer layer separated by a gap from an inner metal layer covered with an electrically insulating material. The metal layers would constitute electrodes of a capacitor. A bias potential would be applied between the metal layers. A particle impinging at hypervelocity on the outer metal layer would break apart into a debris cloud that would penetrate the electrical insulation on the inner metal layer. The cloud would form a path along which electric current could flow between the metal layers, thereby causing the capacitor to discharge. With proper design, the discharge current would be large enough to vaporize the particles in the debris cloud to prevent penetration of the spacecraft. The shield design can be mass optimized to be competitive with existing bumper designs. Parametric studies were proposed to determine optimum correction between bias voltage, impacting particle velocity, gap space, and insulating material required to prevent spacecraft penetration.

Micro- and Nanoscale Capacitors that Incorporate an Array of Conductive Elements Having Elongated Bodies

Systems and methods in accordance with embodiments of the invention implement micro- and nanoscale capacitors that incorporate a conductive element that conforms to the shape of an array elongated bodies. In one embodiment, a capacitor that incorporates a conductive element that conforms to the shape of an array of elongated bodies includes: a first conductive element that conforms to the shape of an array of elongated bodies; a second conductive element that conforms to the shape of an array of elongated bodies; and a dielectric material disposed in between the first conductive element and the second conductive element, and thereby physically separates them.

Parametric Failures in COTS Capacitors

Insertion of COTS components into hi-rel systems require extensive environmental testing of the parts that often results in parametric failures. Based on experience with commercial and hi-rel PME and BME ceramic capacitors and polymer and MnO2 cathode tantalum capacitors, this presentation discusses two major reasons for parametric failures. One is due to the marketing pressure that forces manufacturers to squeeze performance of COTS components thus leaving insufficient margin between the rated and actual characteristics. Another, and probably a more serious reason is degradation of characteristics caused by physico-chemical processes in materials under environmental stresses. Reliability assessment requires development of models to predict behavior of the parts during applications based on accelerated testing that might be outside the specified conditions and target applications. Examples of models developed to simulate and predict wear-out failures are presented. Risks associated with overstressing during HALT are discussed.

Parallel-Plate Capacitor TiN KIDs for Infrared Astronomy

The Balloon Experiment for Galactic INfrared Science (BEGINS) is a concept for a sub-orbital observatory that will characterize dust in the vicinity of high-mass stars. It requires detectors with NEPs from 2x10 -16 W Hz -1/2 to 6x10 -17 W Hz -1/2 from 25-250 microns, respectively. The mission’s sensitivity requirements will be met by utilizing arrays of 1,840 lens-coupled, lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) operating at 300 mK. Each KID will consist of a titanium nitride (TiN) parallel strip absorbing inductive section and parallel plate capacitor deposited on a Silicon (Si) substrate. The parallel plate capacitor geometry allows for reduction of the pixel spacing. We present the optical performance of a prototype BEGINS KID array at 25 microns when coupled to Fresnel zone plate lenses. We present sensitivity, optical efficiency and quasiparticle lifetime measurements taken in a cryogenic test bed with a cryogenic blackbody.

Evaluation of CS-type Metallized Polymer Film Capacitors

In 2023 Quantic Paktron announced production of Capstick high reliability multilayer metallized polymer film capacitors based on a new type of dielectric films and proprietary technology of manufacturing. These parts might be used in power conversion systems, snubbing, and high-frequency applications effectively replacing currently used hermetic polymer capacitors manufactured per MIL-PRF-83421. The purpose of this work is to evaluate design and performance of the parts, address potential reliability issues and get preliminary assessments of reliability and the possibility of use in space projects.
