Advanced technology for Space Shuttle Auxiliary Propellant Valves.

Propellant shutoff valves required for the operation of the pulse modulated gaseous hydrogen/gaseous oxygen rocket engines for the Space Shuttle Auxiliary Propulsion System are specified to operate for one million cycles over a ten-year period with zero maintenance, very fast response, very low leakage, and over a wide temperature range. Based on an analytical leakage and wear model, sealing configurations were conceived, sized, and developed. Two prototype valves featuring different components were designed, built, and evaluated for 100,000 cycles. Design concepts and test results are presented.

Echo movement and evolution from real-time processing.

Preliminary experimental data on the effectiveness of conventional radars in measuring the movement and evolution of meteorological echoes when the radar is connected to a programmable real-time processor are examined. In the processor programming is accomplished by conceiving abstract machines which constitute the actual programs used in the methods employed. An analysis of these methods, such as the center of gravity method, the contour-displacement method, the method of slope, the cross-section method, the contour crosscorrelation method, the method of echo evolution at each point, and three-dimensional measurements, shows that the motions deduced from them may differ notably (since each method determines different quantities) but the plurality of measurement may give additional information on the characteristics of the precipitation.

The search for indigenous lunar organic matter.

It is argued that the absence of organic compounds from returned lunar samples is to be expected even for a lunar history rich in primordial organics. The sites most likely to yield lunar organic compounds have not been investigated, and there may be an area of investigation conceivably critical to problems in prebiological chemistry and the early history of the solar system awaiting continued lunar exploration, manned or unmanned.

The evolution of power systems for unmanned interplanetary spacecraft in the 70's.

The power subsystems planned for missions in the 70s have relied heavily on earlier hardware technology and represent an extension of technology conceived in the 60s. Solar panels and primary rechargeable silver-zinc batteries were used throughout the series as power sources. However, because of the increase in battery discharge-charge cycles required, subsequent spacecraft beginning with the Mariner Mars 1971 will use nickel-cadmium batteries. Spacecraft missions to Mars and Venus will continue to use the solar panel and the battery as primary and secondary power sources. The use of the radioisotope thermoelectric generator as the primary power source appears mandatory for missions to the outer planets.

Applications Explorer Missions (AEM): Mission planners handbook

The Applications Explorer Missions (AEM) Program is a planned series of space applications missions whose purpose is to perform various tasks that require a low cost, quick reaction, small spacecraft in a dedicated orbit. The Heat Capacity Mapping Mission (HCMM) is the first mission of this series. The spacecraft described in this document was conceived to support a variety of applications instruments and the HCMM instrument in particular. The maximum use of commonality has been achieved. That is, all of the subsystems employed are taken directly or modified from other programs such as IUE, IMP, RAE, and Nimbus. The result is a small versatile spacecraft. The purpose of this document, the AEM Mission Planners Handbook (AEM/MPH) is to describe the spacecraft and its capabilities in general and the HCMM in particular. This document will also serve as a guide for potential users as to the capabilities of the AEM spacecraft and its achievable orbits. It should enable each potential user to determine the suitability of the AEM concept to his mission.

A command encoding scheme for a multiplexed space communications link

This paper describes a command encoding scheme which was conceived to provide the necessary error protection for digital commands from a ground-based terminal to a manned spacecraft. The selected approach is compatible with a time-division multiplexing scheme which combines the command channel with two digital voice channels prior to transmission over the RF link. The command encoding scheme is also fully compatible with a channel encoding strategy which is applied to the multiplexed bit sequence (commands plus voice) to provide increased link efficiency. Implementation aspects of the command encoder and decoder are discussed and the system end-to-end performance improvement provided by the command encoding scheme is calculated.

Magnetic field observations near Venus - Preliminary results from Mariner 10

The NASA-GSFC magnetic field experiment on Mariner 10 is the first flight of a dual magnetometer system conceived to permit accurate measurements of weak magnetic fields in space in the presence of a significant and variable spacecraft magnetic field. Results from a preliminary analysis of a limited data set are summarized in this report, which is restricted primarily to Venus encounter. A detached bow shock wave that develops as the super Alfvenic solar wind interacts with the Venusian atmosphere has been observed. However, the unique coincidence of trajectory position and interplanetary field orientation at the time of bow shock crossing led to a very disturbed shock profile with considerably enhanced upstream magnetic fluctuations. At present it is not possible to ascertain the nature and characteristics of the obstacle responsible for deflecting the solar wind flow. Far downstream disturbances associated with the solar wind wake have been observed.

A stack algorithm for source coding with a fidelity criterion

Although coding of sources with respect to a fidelity criterion was first proposed by Shannon in 1959, only recently have effective schemes been developed. Another such algorithm based on a stack is described. Like the author's other algorithms (Jelinek and Anderson, 1971, 1973), this algorithm is conceived with tree codes in mind. It has various strengths and weaknesses relative to the earlier two, which are explored. By itself, the algorithm has an interesting mathematical analysis that yields insight into the faster-than-exponential behavior of tree variables and provides a new characterization of the rate-distortion function.

Differential transmission of sunlight on Mars - Biological implications

A euphotic zone seems to exist at about 1 cm subsurface in the Martian epilith. At this depth, visible light is still intense enough to be utilized by conceivable photosynthetic organisms; but the germicidal ultraviolet intensities at the Martian surface have been reduced to values manageable by terrestrial life. Such euphotic zone organisms would experience moderately high Martian temperatures at equatorial latitudes and can be dispersed readily during global dust storms. During such storms the Martian euphotic zone may reach the surface. The aerosol content of the Martian atmosphere can be monitored by multiband single-line scans of the sun at large zenith angles by the Viking lander camera; and the postulated euphotic zone organisms can be searched for with the Viking lander sample arm and biology experiments.

The Representative Shuttle Environmental Control System

The Representative Shuttle Environmental Control System (RSECS) program was conceived to provide NASA with a prototype system representative of the Shuttle Environmental Control System (ECS). Discussed are the RSECS program objectives, predicated on updating and adding to the early system as required to retain its usefulness during the Shuttle ECS development and qualification effort. Ultimately, RSECS will be replaced with a flight-designed system using either refurbished development or qualification equipment to provide NASA with a flight simulation capability during the Shuttle missions. The RSECS air revitalization subsystem and the waste management support subsystem are being tested. A water coolant subsystem and a freon coolant subsystem are in the development and planning phases.

Far-infrared emission from H II regions. II - Multicolor photometry of selected sources and 2.2 min resolution maps of M42 and NGC 2024

Medium- and broad-bandwidth photometric measurements have been made of seven compact H II regions at wavelengths between 30 and 650 microns. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the far-infrared flux is continuum radiation from dust grains. Color temperatures range from 33 to 85 K. For most of the sources, the infrared flux is low enough so that the dust could conceivably be mixed with the ionized gas. In at least one case, however, the far-infrared spectrum and luminosity of the source cannot be reconciled with reasonable grain models unless the far-infrared flux comes from a shell surrounding the H II region. M42 (Orion) and NGC 2024 (Orion B) have been mapped at 90 microns with a resolution (half-power beam diameter) of 2.2 min. Although the peak far-infrared brightness in M42 occurs at the position of the Kleinmann-Low infrared nebula, most of the flux originates in a more extended (about 6 x 8 min) source. The energy for the diffuse component could be supplied by the stars in the Trapezium cluster. However, the single early-type star visible in NGC 2024 is not luminous enough to account for either the infrared flux or the observed free-free flux.

Radioactive halos and ion microprobe measurement of Pb isotope ratios

This investigation was to obtain, if possible, the Pb isotope ratios of both lunar and meteoritic troilite grains by utilizing ion microprobe techniques. Such direct in situ measurement of Pb isotope ratios would eliminate contamination problems inherent in wet chemistry separation procedures, and conceivably determine whether lunar troilite grains were of meteoritic origin. For comparison purposes two samples of meteoritic troilite were selected (one from Canyon Diablo) for analysis along with two very small lunar troilite grains (approximately 50-100 microns). It was concluded that the ion microprobe as presently operating, does not permit the in situ measurement of Pb isotope ratios in lunar or meteoritic troilite. On the basis of these experiments no conclusions could be drawn as to the origin of the lunar troilite grains.
